Welcome to another edition of the MHOD Jukebox, where the riffs are heavy and the commentary is heavier. On this episode, Mark Radulich, Jesse Starcher, Robert Cooper, and Mik Wanamaker dive deep into the fuzzy, funk-laced world of Crobot! We kick things off with a blast of industrial groove from White Zombie, then take a quick stroll through Crobot's history—where they came from, what they sound like, and how they carved out their niche in modern rock. From there, it's on to their breakout hit “Low Life”, a full review of their latest album Obsidian, and a look at how it stacks up against past efforts like Welcome to Fat City.We also take a moment to reflect on key events from May 18th in metal history, including the passing of Chris Cornell and the legacy of Blind Guardian, Soulfly, and HammerFall. And because this is MHOD, you know it wouldn't be complete without a bit of black metal nonsense from Immortal, a detour into OnlyFans coaching, and a punchy closer from Five Finger Death Punch.Plug in and turn it up—this one's got riffs, laughs, and just enough chaos to keep it interesting.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.White Zombie - More Human Than Humanhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0E0ynyIUsgCrobot - "Low Life" Official Music Video (MOTHERBRAIN)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPi_SaFsMf8Crobot - Nothing (Official Music Video)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CKT3LXQKec&list=PLVPMBFr-dNGWxLvdFACIxmCLaMKnq0Q0B&index=15Immortal - Call Of The Wintermoonhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VBdAY8eA9wFive Finger Death Punch - Jekyll And Hydehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCBPmxiVMKkMik Wanamakers Onlyfans: https://onlyfans.com/asirencreatesMark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

A much loved figure within the American underground scene, California's Baby Leo has been consciously connecting body and mind from coast to coast, finding space for the unpredictable and the awe inspiring, hypnotising dancefloors with wildly eclectic DJ sets filled with energising twists and turns. An innovator and sonic boundary pusher at his core, the Dripping festival Leo runs alongside Relaxer is a deep underground oasis in the woods of Sparta, New Jersey, and returns for it's third mind excursion this June, with Leo and DJ Plead combining this year for a hotly anticipated back to back. @djbabyleo Q. The mix is truly a wild ride! What sounds or feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this, and what listening environments could you imagine it being enjoyed in? A. This is the deepcast right? For this one, we're going deeper than what I might usually do in a club. Some of these tracks came to me while laying blindfolded on the floor during guided high-dose mushroom journeys. Because this is a space of complete emotional surrender, many of these tracks became permanently embedded in my heart. Awe, fear, reverence, gratitude are all part of the recipe. The ideal listening environment is similar to how you might want to watch a movie - cozy, undistracted, and fully immersed in sound. Perhaps by yourself and hopefully something to return to and discover something new. Q. Are there any songs in the mix that are especially close to your heart, and what is it about these tracks that resonate with you so much? A. I think Untitled (How Does it Feel) by D'Angelo is my favorite song of all time. It feels amazing every time. The way energy builds and boils over is unmatched. I played it backwards. Q. Your festival Dripping returns to the majestic woods of Sparta, NJ for its third year running in June, and I see you've got a special extended b2b set with DJ Plead planned which should be quite the mind-bend! How have you been preparing for that one, and what things might you guys be doing differently this year that you're excited about? A. Preparation hasn't really begun in any serious way, but we are both anticipating and very excited to play together. Especially at Dripping, I'm typically trying to push the energy forward for a fully explosive impact. I will usually do a lot of preparation for a set like this and plan certain sequences. In contrast, I've seen Plead play sets with incredible restraint, patiently working a crowd into complete hypnosis. I guess the thing about a back to back set is that it will take on a life of its own and just go where it needs to go. There will be less planning for this and more intuition, but mind-bending and heart-opening is certainly the goal and we haven't discussed anything other than that. The two guest interviews featured in Episode 7 with Bruce Hornsby and Béla Fleck were recorded back-to-back by host/producer Carmel Holt. As it turns out, the threads that connect the two artists to each other and to Joni, make the conversations a perfect pair. Joni's then-husband, Larry Klein, played bass on and co-produced several of her albums in the '80s and '90s. He would also bring the two guests in this episode closer to each other and to their shared SHERO, Joni. Pianist and genre-blending musician Bruce Hornsby sings us through his Road to Joni, which includes Joni's first live album Miles of Aisles, a revelation that led him to devour her entire early catalogue, becoming a "complete Joni Mitchell devotee." In the 90's, Hornsby would go on to play on Shawn Colvin's second album, Fat City, produced by Larry Klein. Bruce ends by giving us a hint at a new project that he considers a "Paprika Plains"-like opus. Banjo player and fellow breaker of genre-boundaries Béla Fleck's Road began with a birthday gift from his stepfather: a copy of Blue that he would wear out that summer. Béla recounts how "The Last Time I Saw Richard" taught him entirely new emotions as a teenager. Later on, he tells us how he, too, played on Shawn Colvin's album with Hornsby and Klein, and got to record in Joni's house. He also shares the story of a terrifying overnight hospital stay his son and family endured, where they played Night Ride Home on repeat to get them through.

As an NYFD firefighter working the overnight shift at Engine Company 55, Steve Buscemi popped a VHS tape into the station's player and experienced John Huston's Fat City for the first time. Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name and adapted for the screen by its author Leonard Gardner, the film centers around boxing and life in the hard-scrabble central California town of Stockton. Former champ Tully (Stacy Keach) sets his sights on returning to the ring when he meets Ernie (Jeff Bridges), an eighteen-year-old who he takes under his wing. As their friendship and rivalry unfold, we meet the sherry-loving Ooma (Susan Tyrell), Ernie's pregnant girlfriend Faye (Candy Clark), and boxing manager Ruben (Nicholas Colasanto), all of whom round out Huston's tale of hope, desperation, and dignity. We learn about Steve's real-life encounter with Susan Tyrell, what he learned from his time as a teenage usher at the Belair Theater in Valley Stream, NY, and how Fat City inspired his own directorial debut, Trees Lounge. Larry Klein has had his mitts on so many amazing records over the past 40 years, but is still a relatively quiet, behind-the-scenes kind of musician. He is a four time grammy winner as a producer, and has made records for artists like Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Holly Cole, Madeleine Peyroux and Tracy Chapman. I think the first time I ever saw his name was on a cassette I had of Shawn Colvin called “Fat City”, and then I kept seeing his name pop up on cool records over and over again. Larry started out as a bass player in California, and landed a gig pretty early on with jazz legend Freddie Hubbard. He toured with Freddie for years, and then slipped successfully into the session world. As a bass player he played on so many classic albums like “So” by Peter Gabriel, “Building the Perfect Beast” by Don Henley, Robbie Robertson, Tracy Chapman's debut album and many more. He eventually landed a session with Joni Mitchell, which led to him playing on and producing a string of her records, starting with “Wild Things Run Fast” in 1982, right up through “Travelogue” in 2002. They were married and divorced in that window of time as well. His production work is always deep and sonically interesting. He has a real jazz mentality towards making pop records, which I love. There's alot of live performance based takes, mixed with rich sounds and experimentation. Gaining the trust of Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter is no small feat, but Larry did that and produced records for those jazz legends! In recent years, Larry made a great record with Herbie Hancock of Joni Mitchell tunes called “River: The Joni Letters”, and during Covid, he made a record in a similar vein called “Here It Is”, a Tribute to Leonard Cohen. It's basically an insane house band backing up artists like Iggy Pop, Norah Jones, Peter Gabriel, Mavis Staples and lots more doing Leonard Cohen tunes. I should also mention that we just ran out of time on this one, hence the abrupt ending. Larry had a limited window and I lost track of time, so we just kind of had to cap it mid-stream, but we got into tons of cool stuff anyway! I don't think Larry is on the road at all any more, so you can't catch him live with anyone currently, but you can get info on him and news on his latest projects over at larrykleinmusic.net — Please enjoy my conversation with Larry Klein! I got a chance to sit down with my dear friend Jason Miraglia (the 'G' is silent, as you'll hear ;) at Olga's Diner in Marlton, NJ. When I first met Jay, he was the drummer in one of the most popular Philly bands of the 2000's - Fat City Reprise. He would later sit behind the kit in the last lineup of IKE and also play drums on all of records I did with John & Brittany. He currently still played with our pal Brett Talley in their cover band Bangarang and on Brett's prolific solo catalog. Our convo at Olga's runs the gamut from some of my other, dare I say, more niche podcast ideas, to our embrace of awkwardness, to an overview of his journey as a musician. Lately, he been reconnecting with his former Fat City bandmates Mike Vivas and Nick Anastasi in a new project called Honey Butter (although, as you'll hear, Vivas has been coyly non-committal ;) I had an absolute blast talking with Jaybles and hope you enjoy listening in!!
VHS SPECIAL: PRETTY WOMAN & THE SCREENPLAY "THREE THOUSAND" Ken and Jack dust off the VHS player for another trip back in time where you have to rewind. PRETTY WOMAN. 1990 was a perfect era for VHS. The film transfers were all pristine so we no longer have the grainy, crappy transfers that marked so many classics from the 1970s (three of which, BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA, FAT CITY, & SCARECROW, were lovingly covered in our first three VHS episodes). The most popular romantic comedy of all time and the film that supernova'd Julia Roberts from little known supporting actress to one of the biggest stars in the world, Pretty woman began life as a gritty drama entitled THREE THOUSAND, by JF Lawton (Under Siege). The script went on to be a strong calling card for Lawton's writing and went through a few production companies wanting to make it before landing at Touchstone, the grown-up arm of Disney at the time. Jeffrey Katzneberg saw the dark, economic reality-embracing script as a warm, romantic fable and work began to turn Lawton's script into just that. Again, this is a movie made by Disney about a prostitute and a corporate raider falling in love directed by the creator of Happy Days and Mork & Mindy. And it's a comedy. And it made almost half a billion dollars at the box office - well over a BILLION adjusted for inflation. WHAT? Could this be made today? Could it have been made in 1985 or even 1995? The mind reels at how strangely this project came together and how thin the line is in filmmaking between creative and financial disaster and timeless classic. How they did it and what actually changed is one of the most instructive bits of Hollywood tinkering and magic as you will ever hear. Ken read the original script and goes into some detail at what changed and, remarkably, what didn't. VHS is a special medium. Sometimes the grain or noise and the hum of the machine is like time travel in 2023. Pretty Woman is a classic for a lot of reasons and seeing it the way home viewers did 30 years ago proves a rare treat for our hosts. Clark and Cullen discuss Cullen's pick - John Huston's 1972 sports drama Fat City. This film, shot on location in good ol' (and stinky) Stockton, CA, stars Stacy Keach, an extremely young Jeff Bridges, and Susan Tyrrell (who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance. Sit back and relax as we discuss this hidden gem of a flick!
THE FINAL FILM IN AN EPIC VHS JOURNEY TO THE EARLY 1970s *TRIGGER WARNING: SCARECROW CONTAINS A SCENE OF SEXUAL ASSAULT* VHS, in its heyday, was the best way to watch movies. They opened up a generation to movies previously impossible to see if they weren't circulating in movie theaters years and decades after release. You could argue our current nerd culture, where everybody has seen everything, was kickstarted by GEN X getting their hands on previously obscure movies. A lot of transfers of older movies to VHS were crappy. Available film prints were Paleolithic, compression was an issue, and, frankly, studios did not care how they looked when monetizing their libraries; Too dark, pan-and-scanned, color resolution sometimes bordering monochromatic. But in 2022 it IS a visual aesthetic filmmakers try to replicate to give their films a grimy, unwashed and somehow dangerous feel. Our impromptu trilogy of films we watched on VHS comes to a close with Jerry Schatzberg's sadly neglected vagabond road trip masterwork, SCARECROW (1973), with GENE F*CKING HACKMAN and AL G*DDAMN PACINO in their primes. Like our previous two films in this series (BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA and FAT CITY), Scarecrow was made at a time when studios (in this case, Warner Brothers) had no idea what the kids wanted to see. A riff on the themes in super successful films Easy Rider and Midnight Cowboy, featuring two of the biggest stars of the time actually sounds like a no-brainer. Scarecrow is about two vagabonds with big plans that team up to drift from California to Pittsburgh (with a detour in Detroit). Hackman has never been so lived-in with a role that he always considered a favorite and Pacino is a revelation of warmth and humor, also in a role he often cites as a favorite. We get into the plot on the episode and discuss what happened to this film to have two of the biggest stars of the era, be a great movie, and all but disappear. It is so good its cult status is understandable but why did it fail upon its release?Director Jerry Schatzberg was a highly regarded photographer in the 1960s that became an even more highly regarded fashion and celebrity portrait photographer before trying his hand at film. He'd worked with Pacino in Panic at Needle Park a few years earlier with Pacino (a street-level heroin addiction drama adapted by... JOAN DIDION and JOHN GREGORY DUNNE. So we watched three movies on VHS released between 1972 and 1974. What was in the water? What changed in movies that have made all three cult favorites rather than films we see on cinema montages? We'll get into that and the great era of 70s studio filmmaking that was gone almost before it started, Another grimy, gorgeously depressing early 1970s film perfect for rewatch on VHS. Whoever invented pan-and-scan for VHS owes everyone involved with Scarecrow an apology. Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where this week it is the latest installment in our season-wide focus on sportswashing, with the spotlight focused on boxing. Perhaps the sport's preeminent power-broker, promoter Eddie Hearn has staged two heavyweight championship fights: a 2019 tilt featuring Andy Ruiz and Anthony Joshua and a 2022 bout between the aforementioned Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia. How and why these fights, contested for the sport's showcase prize, could occur in such a locale with a record so poor on human rights set the table for a conversation that works in reverse chronology. 1974's George Foreman/Muhammad Ali “Rumble in the Jungle” and 1975's Ali/Joe Frazier “Thrilla in Manila” were contests of the highest profile, perhaps the two most famous in heavyweight championship history, controversially staged in Zaire and the Philippines, respectively. Both promoted by the ever-problematic Don King, these bouts and their eventually decided host venues laid the groundwork for Hearn's modern appeal to the cash-rich coiffeurs of Saudi Arabia and their vast Public Investment Fund. It is a discussion of then and now, presented with a shot of fight nerd discourse and a broader chaser consideration of sportwashing in a sport where such a thing has existed for half a century or more. It's this week, on the Bill Bradley Collective.
VHS SPECIAL: FAT CITY *FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY* Listener, you can count on us. VHS, in its heyday, was the best way to watch movies. But in 2022 it IS a visual aesthetic filmmakers try to replicate to give their films a grimy, unwashed and somehow dangerous feel.1972's FAT CITY was John Huston's first film shot in the US in over a decade and signaled a return to form after a string of disasters and financial disappointments. His previous film ended with him either being fired or walking off, depending who you ask. Going small and character-driven with a main character on the ropes, his best days far in the past, was exactly what Huston needed at the time. Jack and Thomas both read Leonard Gardner's 1969 novel of the same name and bring a treasure trove of changes made between the book and Gardner's own adaptation. Gardner suffered through a number of rewrites and changes during a production that somehow ended up taking the film back to being closer to the book. Taking place in resort wonderland, Stockton, California, the book and film follows drunken, onetime boxing contender Billy Tully (played by Stacy Keach in a career highlight), who keeps talking of getting back in shape and back into boxing in tragic repetition momentarily paused when he actually does get back into boxing after meeting a very young Jeff Bridges, who boxes as a lark but may have something special in his form - or may be replicating Tully's own narrative life journey. These are folks who supplement what meager finances they have by picking onions and nuts in the sweltering heat of California's unyielding breadbasket. Tully spends his $ on booze, Bridge's character has a pregnant girlfriend. They are all on the margins, where so many great 1970s movies founds its people. We are fortunate to live in a gilded age where there is little financial anxiety or people living on the ragged margins of society (according to the movies we get from studios, anyway.) Tully takes up residence with Oma, a barfly of an undetermined age played by Susan Tyrrell in one of the great performances of the era. You will swear they hired her from an actual dive bar in Stockton. She got an Oscar nom for all the trouble she had butting heads with Huston on the set. We all love her performance here as something special and possibly iconic.Another sweaty, grimy, gorgeously depressing early 1970s film perfect for rewatch on VHS. Damn, those 1980s transfers of old movies was complete ass and it serves FAT CITY well. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I. The Alan Cox Show
Jordan Peele inspired Josiah and John to create this podcast, and so it is appropriate that his film, NOPE, is the subject of our 100th episode. Nope is a genre breaking critique of the modern (and ultimately) human infatuation with spectacle. The film channels Jaws, the great westerns of the 1950s and 60s, a host of paranoid, alien invasion films, and Spielberg's cinematic style. All of that is supported by beautiful visual imagery, stellar acting, deep cinema history references, and a well crafted plot. Josiah and John have been waiting since seeing US to review and discuss Peele's work on the podcast and they don't skip a beat. The conversation is their reaction and unrehearsed analysis and, like the film, does not kick into high gear until midway through the conversation. It is all great fun, but the meat comes after some verbal antipasto. Check out the timestamps below to see where you want to join into the dialogue. TIMESTAMPS: 1. Welcome to Episode 100- 0:10 2. Special Birthday Episode! My Birthday was a couple of weeks ago, so I asked you for film recommendations as "gifts" and you delivered with some fun and quality films. From ones I knew of and was looking forward to, like The Straight Story and Barking Dogs Never Bite, to the ones I had never heard of like Fat City and Odd Thomas. Check out my thoughts on all of them, as well as some thoughts from those that recommended them. Thanks!Music: Joseph McDade - ElevationBlade Runner clip (c) Warner Bros.
Based on a book by and adapted by Leonard Gardner, Fat City (1972) was directed by John Huston and stars Stacy Keach as Tully, an over the hill fighter who says he wants to pick himself up and revive his career after he meets Ernie, played by Jeff Bridges, a kid who seems to have a lot of promise in the boxing world. We see their stories parallel and contrast one another as we watch Fat City unfold.Jedidiah Ayres and Heather Drain join Mike to discuss this wonderfully downbeat film.Learn more about your ad choices.
