Joe McGrath is well known within the music industry and is an accomplished producer, and recording/mix engineer who leads the team at Hellfire Recording Studio Dublin. His ability to put people at ease, combined with brilliant technical skill has led him to work with a diverse list of acclaimed artists including Republic of Loose, Mary Coughlan, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, The Coronas, Johnny Mc Evoy, Loah, Stano, Fields, David Keenan, Wyvern Lingo, Niwel Tsumbu, and Yankari to mention but a few. Joe studied acoustic design and has sat on the Programmatic Review panel for the Certificate, Diploma, and Masters courses in Music Technology at the Dundalk Institute of Technology. He designed the vast majority of the acoustic spaces in Hellfire Studio. His understanding of live rooms and how to quickly manipulate acoustics allow him to capture sonics that bring out an artist's originality. Acoustics and recording are Joe's passions and live recording is Joe's specialty. A session with him is performance-driven, keeping creativity and individuality center stage, whilst also being productive and fun. “Collaboration to realize artistic visions” is what Hellfire Studio stands for to Joe. Producing for artists, working alongside engineers such as Rob Kirwan (Hozier, PJ Harvey), Ger Mc Donald (U2, Manic Street Preachers) and engineering for producer/composer Valgeir Sigurðsson ( Bjork, Feist, Sigur Rós) on Mary Couglans powerful “A Woman Undone” – has given him the insight and attention to detail to make great records and set the standard for Irish recording and production. Ešte minulý rok nahrala súrodenecká zostava Hypnotic Brass Ensemble zvláštny album This is a Mindfulness Drill. A špeciálne balada Soon It Will Be Fire s hosťujúcim Mosesom Sumneyim je nádhera, akú ste naposledy počuli v lepších časoch Jónsiho Birgissona zo Sigur Rós.
This time we'll let music do all the talking because it's hard to find words that can channel what's going on. If anything it's in times like this that we are reminded about the power of music. If anything it's in times like these that we are reminded about the power of music. And jazz, in particular, has a long history of being inspired by challenging events and human struggles, distilling beauty out of the harshest circumstances. The playlist features Bill Evans; Dave Douglas; Charles Lloyd; Shai Maestro; Marianne Faithfull, Chris Spedding; Ivano Fossati; Hypnotic Brass Ensemble; Tino Tracanna, Giovanni Falzone, Paolino Dalla Porta, Vittorio Marinoni; Don Cherry; Duck Baker; Ernst Reijseger; Misha Alperin, Arkady Shilkloper, Anja Lechner. We have a great Cook Up
Skyzoo - "Bed-Stuy Is Burning" from the 2021 album All the Brilliant Things on Mello. New York has long been embedded in the work of rapper Skyzoo. Born Gregory Skyler Taylor in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, he cites his hometown as an influence, tellingThe Living Room, "There's certain values and morals that come with the neighborhood and era that I grew up in. Those are important musically and just in life." However, he laments the gentrification of his city on today's Song of the Day and the album it comes from, the new LP All The Brilliant Things. He explains in a press release: With All The Brilliant Things, the idea was truly to try and tackle the realities of gentrification and this new era of cultural appropriation, commonly known as “culture vulturing”. The way they intertwine with one another, parallel at times, and how us as the residents of our long-standing homes and creators of these cultures have been stripped of it, or at times let it happen, all for what we assumed was our best interest. The irony of it all is, despite how it all makes us feel in hindsight, one would have to admit that the orchestration of it was truly brilliant. Brutal, and heinous, but somehow pretty brilliant. Hence the title of the album. The cover art, illustrated by Matt Rockefeller, shows my 3 year-old-son and I on the corner of Fulton St. and Franklin Ave. in Brooklyn, and I'm showing him a condo being built in our neighborhood, a neighborhood that's rapidly dying, explaining it to him and trying to make sense of it all. Today's Prescription is for new music because discovering new music is a life-saving activity. Think of all the music that's yet to be made. Think of all the shows you've yet to attend. Think of all the words that have yet to be sung or spoken that may speak to you. The first thing I want to prescribe is the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. This 8-piece brass ensemble consists of eight sons of the jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran (CORE-IN). Their music style ranges from hip hop to jazz & funk. They call it "Hypnotic NOW music." As brothers growing up, they would have rehearsals in their living room where they would wake up every day at 6am & play their horns before school. They got their name performing in train stations for daily commuters. They were called "hypnotic," & that's where that came from. Their new release is called "This is a Mindfulness Drill" & this track "Soon it will be fire" featuring Moses Sumney may just be my favorite song so far this year. ------- The next artist I want you to listen to every day is Ambar Lucid & her new EP "Get Lost in the Music." Ambar who was born in NJ to a Dominican Mother & Mexican Father started singing at the age of 5, she is totally self-taught on piano, guitar, & Ukulele. Left high school for LA to pursue music & sings in both English & in Spanish. The title track is one OF the jams of the summer. It's a nod to 60's psychedelica with a push for self-love & empowerment & its catchy as hell. ------- Your third remedy for a lack of discovery is Amythyst Kiah (KEE-AH). She's just released her debut album "Wary & Strange." A mix of roots & old time music, she also performed as a member of Our Native Daughters (who by the way is someone you should look up). Black Myself earned a Grammy nomination for best American roots song & won song of the year at the Folk Alliance International Awards. ------- That's three out of a thousand I could recommend to you. Start there & stay close to the DR&DJ podcast. You can also follow me on Instagram @Djjohnrichards to keep up with me & these other 997 artists I didn't have time to mention here. El primer ' Calima Presenta' se celebrará este jueves 1 de julio en la Sala Clamores de Madrid. One thing that Jazz and Circus have in common is that--unlike way too many things that we see in our daily lives--you can't fake them. You cannot pretend you're an expert among circus or jazz artists… If you are not … it'll show! And this authenticity may be one of the reasons why they seem so precious in this age of disposable fakeness. Here we continue our exploration of the connections between jazz and circuls with a dolly shot of circus acts, fire eaters, mimes, jugglers and many more. Enjoy the show, and don't forget that jazz never fails to be our safety net when we fall off the trapeze because the other guy didn't bother reaching out for us... Our guest for this episode is Masta Ace. From his first appearance on "The Symphony" (1988), to his most recent release, The Falling Season, Ace has consistently made great music. His verses are always intentful, and his albums are filled with songs with meaning. He is a true Brooklyn emcee; more wit, more skill and less rah-rah. Intelligent and gifted in the art of story telling, his solo albums are a mixture of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Lee Daniels and David Simon. Pure cinema. We cover a lot of territory in this episode, including Ace's experiences with different record labels, how he finds out about new music, The World's Famous Supreme Team, neighborhood battles, Marley Marl and how a rap contest at a roller skating rink started everything. But it wasn't all hip-hop: We also talk about Ace's stint as a high school football coach and the importance of youth sports. Additionally, Ace's wife, Leschea, talks about working with her husband on creative projects, why she started her own podcast, and how she met her show's co-host, Danny Love. Lots and lost of stories. And we mange to even say some positive things about the Knicks. It was a great time! If you haven't already, definitely check out Ace's trilogy (Disposable Arts, A Long Hot Summer, The Falling Season) as well as the latest single, "Y.B.I. (Young Black Intelligent)" featuring Pav Bundy and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. For entertainment and culture news, watch the live broadcast of the Leschea Show every Sunday morning on Facebook and Periscope @lescheashow.

Well I just went on an album buying spree (and you should too!!) because once again, the research paid off. I listened to around 1500 bands. Narrowed that down to 100 or so. And then wrote out an itinerary of about 40 which, I actually got to see. It is so much work but the reward is so worth it. SXSW is really something I live for. To all my friends and family that helped make it such an awesome event, and for understanding when I could only hang out for 10 minutes because I had the next show to run off to, this podcast is my thank you. If you're curious where I was running off to, I have included my ridiculous itinerary below. I would love for someone to figure out how many miles I put it.Wed730-800 Keeper at Swan Dive Patio800-840 Aisha Burns at Lucille900-940 Marian Hill at Blackheart930-1000 Basecamp at Lucky Lounge1000-1040 The Seshen at The Iron Bear (TruThoughts Showcase)1100-1140 Odesza (badges only) at The Parish1130-1245 Kidnap Kid at V Lounge1200-1240 Little Simz at Latitude 301200-1240 Jared and the Mill at Esther's Follies1:00-1:50 The Last Bison at Esther's FolliesThur800-850 Rubblebucket at IFC Fairgrounds840-925 Doomtree at Karma Lounge930-1010 Until the Ribbon Breaks at Bar 961000-1040 Hypnotic Brass Ensemble at Flamingo Cantina1100-1140 Zionstereo at Speakeasy1200-1230 DeJ Loaf at Tap Room at The Market1230-200 Austin Bassdrive Sessions at Dozen ClubFriday730- Photay at Central Presbyterian 800- Irene Diaz at Flamingo Cantina830- Nyla at Palm Door910- Kate Tempest at Maggie Mae's Rooftop1000- Joel Laviolette at Russian House1100- Chadwick Stokes at Lucky Lounge1130- Badbadnotgood at place that used to be Antones1230- Ghostface Killah with Badbadnotgood at place that used to be Antones115-300 Hernan Catteno at KingdomSaturday230-300 GFOTY + Spinee at Hype Hotel300-345 A. And that was just one of the many SXSW miracles I had. Also not on the podcast is Hernan Catteno building it up and breaking it down till 3am. So so good. Oh man and as always, Austin, you came through with so so much amazingly delicious food. Long story short, it was perfect. Always is. Can't wait to do it again. Back on the air in our regular format of totally batshit disorganization. We've got baseball, we've got tape noise, we've got plinky indie rock and skronky horns. And it's all tied together with a tattered twine of logic that only a bird could understand. The last bit of this show felt truncated (I was kind of hoping Uncle Matt would come super late). So I might actually repeat a song or two at the top of PROGRAM 28 before going where I meant to go had I kept going. What started as a young womans determination to survive a government-operated blood sport has now become a worldwide phenomenon. We dissect in vivid detail both the new film adaptation by famed filmmaker Gary Ross as well as the acclaimed novel by Susanne Collins. We also bend the rules of physics, resulting in a very special surprise.Join Eric, Lauren, Cody & Jason as they discuss the ins and outs of Panem, its cultural makeups, and the awesomeness that is Ceasar Flickerman (and possibly Johanna Mason). If you will notice, the usual music has been changed for this episode. This weeks music comes from Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Track titled War from their self-titled album.
