Two weeks after defeat in the Connacht Post Primary Schools Hurling Final, St. Raphael's Loughrea begin their All-Ireland championship quest when they face St. Kieran's, Kilkenny in the quarter-final on Saturday (21st February 2026). It's a repeat of the 2024 final, which the Leinster college won after extra time.  St. Kieran's clinched a 60th provincial title recently by beating Kilkenny CBC 2-25 to 0-11. St. Raphael's led for most of their battle with Presentation Athenry, only for Ciarán Leen's goal to swing the result against them 1-21 to 1-18. Podcast De Boekenparade tipt in elke aflevering een boek om voor te lezen aan je kinderen. Kinderboekenexpert Sara van Forum Groningen kiest een boek waar Jeroen van Studio Hoorzaam uit voorleest. Ze zoeken daarbij een haakje bij het Forum.Het Hekkenhuis gaat over Jackson. Jackson zit in de klas bij zijn favoriete juf Annie tijdens een les en moet giechelen. Dit alles is het begin van een kaartenhuis dat in elkaar stort. Uiteindelijk wordt het zwart voor Jacksons ogen en wordt hij zo boos, dat hij het digibord van de muur rukt. Het digibord valt op juf Annie, zijn favoriete juf Annie, die nu een been gebroken heeft. Je kan je voorstellen dat Jackson straf krijgt, maar juf Annie is niet echt boos. Jackson heeft veel moeite met sorry zeggen. Dat komt door alle vervelende dingen die hij heeft meegemaakt. Om sorry te leren zeggen, wordt zijn straf dat hij naar het Hekkenhuis moet en daar op bezoek moet bij meneer Lear. Of dit nou een huis met veel Hekken is of het gekkenhuis, weet Jackson eigenlijk niet. Volgens juf Annie hebben de mensen in het Hekkenhuis iets met taal en kan vooral meneer Lear hem helpen. Dit boek is een erg mooie les over anders zijn en jezelf. Daar tipt Sara nog twee boeken over!Tip 1 - Het bijna helemaal waargebeurde verhaal van Ryan – Pepijn Lievens In dit boek van dezelfde schrijver als het Hekkenhuis ligt verbeelding en de waarheid ook weer dicht bij elkaar en soms helemaal door elkaar heen en dat terwijl het heel normaal lijkt. Je lachspieren worden getraind. Je volgt Ryan van 10. Ryan heeft zijn vader al 34 dagen, 8 uur en 17 minuten niet meer gezien. Omdat zijn vader al zolang weg is, moet hij volgens Ryan wel ontdekkingsreiziger zijn. Dat is natuurlijk niet zomaar iets wat je mag delen. Ryan heeft zelf ook een geheim: hij is verliefd. Met een beetje hulp van een professor in vermommingstechniek lijkt het hem bijna te lukken bij zijn grote liefde in de buurt te komen. Hij probeert zichzelf te veranderen in een balpen, zodat hij in het etui van Rafaella kan zijn.   Ryan komt weer met beide benen op de aarde als hij plots toch weer bericht krijgt van zijn verdwenen vader… Een absurd verhaal dat laat zien waar je hoofd toe in staat is als al het andere om je heen te spannend of onzeker wordt. Tip 2 - Willem Zoetelief, koning van Aloeka – Ronnie van Veen Dit boek gaat over Willem. Net als in de andere twee boeken, heeft deze jongen een heel rijke fantasie en een boek vol humor. Hij liegt op school over zijn vakantiebestemming. Hij zegt dat ze met het gezin naar Aloeka gaan, een klein eilandje in de Indische Oceaan. Niemand gelooft hem, maar toch is het een plek waar Willem wel vaak komt: in zijn slaap. Het zou volgens Willem een plek zijn waar Floortje Dessing zou komen voor een tv-programma. Aloeka is de plek waar Willem naartoe kan om te ontsnappen. Thuis is het namelijk allesbehalve fijn. Zijn ouders maken veel ruzie, er is weinig geld en zijn vader kan hier niet goed mee omgaan. Aloeka heeft ook soms wel wat overlap met Willems echte wereld. Zowel in mensen die erlangs komen als het feit dat iedereen eigenlijk op z'n eigen eilandje leeft, fantasie én werkelijkheid. Leen deze boeken bij één van onze vestigingen. Leen van den Berg is een Nederlands-Belgische schrijfster met meerdere boeken op haar naam. Daarnaast gaf ze jarenlang les aan het conservatorium in Hasselt, waar deze aflevering van Podcast Kankerpraat ook werd opgenomen.In deze aflevering vertelt Leen openhartig over haar ervaringen met hormoongevoelige borstkanker. Welkom bij 'Helende gesprekken', dé video-podcast (kijk voor de video op YouTube: @stephaniekaars) waarin ik om de week in gesprek ga met iemand die een bijzonder verhaal te vertellen heeft dat hoop, licht en inspiratie brengt.Vanuit Vlaanderen zit deze keer bij mij aan tafel: Leen van den Berg; psychoanalytica, historica, auteur en docent 'Creatief schrijven'. Zo'n anderhalf jaar geleden krijgt Leen de diagnose borstkanker, nadat ze heeft deelgenomen aan het standaard bevolkingsonderzoek. In eerste instantie doet de diagnose haar wankelen en afglijden tot de bodem van een diepe put, maar later houden vooral humor en fantasie haar toch nog enigszins op de been. Een helende wandelvakantie in Zweden vlak na haar operatie vormt een kantelpunt: middenin de natuur beleeft Leen een eenheidservaring die haar perspectief verandert. Inmiddels is ze zich gaan verdiepen in leefstijl-geneeskunde en wil ze anderen waarschuwen voor de negatieve gevolgen van onder andere suiker op ons immuunsysteem. Ze zoeken daarbij een haakje bij het Forum. In "Schildpadmeisje” volgen we Elvis, of Vis, die samen met haar moeder en zusje woont en in de eerste klas van de middelbare school zit. Haar vader is een tijdje geleden vertrokken naar Parijs. Hem spreekt en ziet ze eigenlijk nooit meer. Vis is een meisje dat veel interesse heeft in geschiedenis en oude spullen, waar ze mooie verhalen bij verzint. De spullen die ze vindt op straat mogen absoluut niet mee naar huis en bewaart ze dan ook in een afgelegen, geheime caravan. De caravan is een plek voor Elvis waar ze zich helemaal terug kan trekken en zichzelf kan zijn. De relatie tussen Vis en haar moeder is namelijk niet zo goed. De moeder van Vis heeft een drankprobleem en omdat Vis de oudste is, krijgt zij tijdens dronkenbuien vaak de wind van voren. Door hulp van achterbuurjongen Sid en schildpad Simon kruipt Elvis uit haar schulp en durft ze een moeilijk, maar moedige besluit te nemen. Meer boekentips?In al deze tips krijgen kinderen in moeilijke situaties ondersteuning van iets externs: een kiezel, een mysterieuze deur die je naar een andere tijd brengt of een rouwbot. Net als bij Elvis, die haar schildpad Simon vindt en daar steun uithaalt, zijn in deze boeken kinderen wellicht ook wat eenzaam, verdrietig of onzeker en is er iets dat hen hierbij helpt. Tip 1 - Duizend stukjes overal – Mariska Overman Mijs zit in de eerste klas van de middelbare school. Een jaar geleden is haar broer Joes overleden. Dit heeft ervoor gezorgd dat Mijs vaak heel boos is. Die boosheid maakt haar ook eenzaam, want veel mensen op school gaan Mijs nu uit de weg. Mijs' ouders sturen haar naar een therapeut. Die komt met het idee van een rouwbot: een robot met een door AI-gegenereerde stem van haar broer. De beste vriend van haar broer Bowie vindt dit onzin. Hij neemt Mijs mee op sleeptouw om haar de plekken te laten zien waar Joes en Bowie graag kwamen. Op die manier kan je volgens Bowie ook het gevoel hebben dat je nog “bij” iemand bent. Er ontstaat een vriendschap tussen Mijs en Bowie, eentje waarin Mijs achter het geheim van Bowie komt wat hen nog dichterbij elkaar brengt.  Tip 2 - 55 meter onder water – Conny Palmkvist In 55 meter onder water probeert Bengt Gustav de fouten in het verleden van zijn vader recht te zetten, fouten die volgens zijn vader de oorzaak zijn van drankprobleem. Bengt vindt in een leegstaande flat een mysterieuze deur waar 1984 op staat. Zijn nieuwsgierigheid neemt de overhand is het begin van een avontuur dat alles wegheeft van tijdreizen. Hoe harder Bengt zijn best doet om de fouten van zijn vader te verhelpen en voorkomen, hoe meer alles misgaat. Dit boek is een wijze les naar leren hulp te vragen voordat het te laat is. Tip 3 - Kiezel – Bouwien Jansen In Kiezel van Bouwien Jansen volgen we Kat. Kat verhuist met haar ouders naar het Houten Nest. Het huis van haar overleden oom. Een plek waar Kat zich helemaal thuis voelt, maar haar ouders niks mee hebben. Kat en haar ouders zijn ongelooflijk verschillend. Zij ziet de spullen van haar oom als prachtige objecten met mooie verhalen, haar ouders zien er alleen geld is want het zijn kostbare spullen die ze goed kunnen verkopen. Kat voelt zich vaak best heel eenzaam, maar heeft gelukkig haar hond Beest.  Op een dag vindt ze bij het Houten Nest een kiezel. Een normaal, grijs steentje dat toch haar aandacht trekt. Het steentje lijkt soms wat te knetteren en wordt gloeiend heet als ze ‘m vasthoudt. De kiezel is de start van een avontuur met nieuwe vriendschappen, familiegeheimen en een gat in jezelf dat gevuld kan worden door jezelf beter te leren kennen en nieuwe dingen aan te durven gaan. Leen deze boeken bij één van onze vestigingen. From Sneaky Rebel to National Geographic Trailblazer! This is the start of a special two-part series with the amazing Sarah Leen, a woman whose name is synonymous with the iconic yellow border of National Geographic. Podcast De Boekenparade tipt in elke aflevering een boek om voor te lezen aan je kinderen. Kinderboekenexpert Sara van Forum Groningen kiest een boek waar Jeroen van Studio Hoorzaam uit voorleest. Ze zoeken daarbij een haakje bij het Forum. In deze aflevering bespreken we een spiksplinternieuw boek, volledig in kerstsfeer. In Flos en het glazen paleis worden we meegenomen naar Amsterdam in de tijd van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Flos woont bij zijn opa en oma in Brabant, maar wordt voor de kerst opgehaald door zijn moeder om kerst en Flos' verjaardag met haar in Amsterdam door te brengen. Flos' moeder blijkt alleen weinig tijd voor hem te hebben, omdat ze druk bezig is met het kersttoneelstuk dat zij met haar theatergezelschap in Paleis voor Volksvlijt zal opvoeren tijdens kerst. In deze herkenbare vertelling zitten elementen van waargebeurde elementen verwoven met een bekend kerstverhaal van Charles Dickens Scrooge. Tip 1: Circus op zee - Eveline Baar In dit verhaal volg je twee verschillende meiden. Jula, die in deze tijd in Almelo woont en Lot, die in 1934 woont in het circus. Het zijn twee avontuurlijke verhalen in andere tijden, over twee dappere meisjes die toch meer bij elkaar komen dan verwacht.  De schrijver heeft voor dit boek informatie geput uit het leven van haar opa die als journalist meeging op het schip van Circus Sarrasani dat Joodse artiesten in veiligheid bracht tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Tip 2: De Grompus - Alex T. Smith Een kerstig voorleesverhaal voor het hele gezin met een combinatie tussen de Duitse folklore Krampus die op kwaadaardige wijze kinderen wil ontvoeren én De Grinch. Een heel grappig boek over een chagrijnige mopperkont die Kerstmis wil stoppen en dat eigenhandig aan de Kerstman duidelijk wil maken. Het boek heeft mooie illustraties, waardoor je je helemaal in een winterwonderland waant. Goed boek om samen te lezen als de kerststress de overhand neemt in huis. Podcast De Boekenparade tipt in elke aflevering een boek om voor te lezen aan je kinderen. Kinderboekenexpert Sara van Forum Groningen kiest een boek waar Jeroen van Studio Hoorzaam uit voorleest. Ze zoeken daarbij een haakje bij het Forum. In deze aflevering bespreken we een boek dat in het afgelopen jaar veel in the spotlight heeft gestaan. Sara heeft namelijk het boek De lijst van Violet Sopjes, van Groningse schrijver David Vlietstra, meegenomen. Dit boek heeft een zilveren griffel gewonnen en was genomineerd voor de Woutertje Pietersenprijs en daarmee volgens dat jurypanel één van de zes mooiste kinderboeken van afgelopen jaar. In het opvallende boek met illustraties van Yoko Heiligers, volg je Violet. Een bijzonder grappig meisje met een plan. Van Ingeborg moet Violet haar ontmoetingen opschrijven in een schriftje. Violet daagt zichzelf uit om met al haar klasgenoten te spelen en hangt een lijst in haar kamer. Zo krijgt Violet een inkijkje in het leven van haar klasgenoten buiten de schoolbanken om én oefent Violet met contact maken, iets dat zij best spannend vindt. Toch merk je als lezer dat er iets is wat niet helemaal klopt. De verhalen Violet over haar klasgenoten worden steeds bizarder. De volwassenen in Violets leven reageren ook niet helemaal zoals je zou verwachten. Een mooi boek met een flinke dosis humor over je angsten overwinnen.  Omdat er zoveel in dit boek zit (humor, klasgenoten, fantasie, angsten overwinnen), is het moeilijk om maar 2 boeken te tippen! Tip 1: Zeb. - Gideon Samson In dit boek volg je ook een klas waar veel gekke dingen gebeuren. In de klas van juf Cato gaat alles waarschijnlijk nét een beetje anders dan in jouw klas. Alleen worden de dingen die deze klas meemaken uitgelegd aan de lezers alsof het de normaalste zaak van de wereld is. Eén van de klasgenoten is een zebra, 2 + 2 = 5 (ja echt, lees het boek maar!) en een wordt door de burgermeester een verbod ingesteld op huilen. Een boek met 11 korte verhalen die allemaal plaatsvinden in de klas bij juf Cato. Tip 2: Ik moet dit doen – Maren Stoffels Maren Stoffels schrijft normaal gesproken heel spannende boeken. In dit boek is dat niet anders. We volgen Simon, die van zijn ouders naar een zomerkamp moet om te leren dealen met zijn dwangneuroses. Daar heeft hij alleen helemaal geen zin in... Op het kamp trekt hij zich terug en vindt hij eigenlijk maar één iemand die hij aardig vindt. Jasmin, een meisje met smetvrees. Maar wat doet Simon op het moment dat Jasmin verdwijnt? Tip 3: Hoe ik de beste vriend van Helena werd – Jan Sobrie Dit boek is net als het boek over Violet Sopjes gevuld met een goede dosis humor en veel fantasie. Julius heeft een bepaalde kracht. Een geheime kracht, waarvan alleen zijn opa weet dat hij deze heeft. Als Helena bij Julius in de klas komt, merkt hij dat ze verdrietig is. Met zijn kracht probeert Julius Helena te helpen. Een verhaal over vriendschap en moeilijke momenten in het leven, langs een weg vol humor en fantasie. Leen deze boeken bij één van onze vestigingen. In other words, they allow a lot of freedom and leeway, and do not punish or correct in a strong way. // The teacher was lenient in her grading after the holiday break. // Some concerned citizens felt the punishment was too lenient. If you've ever had a peaceful, easy feeling—perhaps brought on by someone who you know won't let you down—then you'll have no problem understanding the earliest meaning of lenient. When it entered English in the mid-1600s, lenient described something soothing—such as a medication—that relieved pain or stress, or otherwise enabled someone to take it easy. For a brief window of time it was even used as a noun, referring to any of various ointments and balms that help heal wounds in the long run. Lenient comes from the Latin verb lenire, meaning “to soften or soothe,” which in turn comes from the adjective lenis, meaning “soft or mild.” The “soothing or easing” sense of lenient is still in use today, but English speakers are more likely to apply it to someone who is lax with the rules (as in “a lenient professor”), who doesn't mind when someone acts like a certain kind of fool or takes it to the limit one more time.
