Annemieke Bosman in gesprek met Jutta Chorus, schrijver en journalist.  Deze maand verscheen haar nieuwe boek Dagen van melk. De geschiedenis van ons familiebedrijf. Zestien was Jutta Chorus' opa toen hij melk ging ophalen bij boeren in de buurt. Tegen de tijd dat Chorus werd geboren reed hij in een Mercedes en rookte hij dikke sigaren. Dit bijna Amerikaanse familieverhaal van armoe naar rijkdom speelt zich af tegen de wonderbaarlijke geschiedenis van de melkproductie in Nederland. Grootvader Leen Menken bracht met ‘Menken melk, lekkere melk' de zuiveldrank aan de man en was de laatste particuliere melkproducent in Nederland. Maar tegen welke prijs? Jutta Chorus daalt af in de jeugd van haar moeder, zoekt haar ooms en tantes op, ontdekt handgeschreven memoires van opa Leen en reconstrueert de opkomst en nadagen van het familiebedrijf. Jutta Chorus is schrijver en journalist voor NRC Handelsblad. In 2003 won ze de Prijs voor Dagbladjournalistiek voor haar bijdragen over de korte politieke carrière van Pim Fortuyn. Ze beschrijft van dichtbij prominente maatschappelijke figuren, zoals het campagneboek In de ban van Fortuyn (met Menno de Galan) laat zien of het portret Beatrix. Dwars door alle weerstand heen.

Tijdens de aflevering leest niet Jeroen, maar huidig voorleeskampioene van de gemeente Groningen Zoë een stukje voor uit het boek. Ook geeft zij het een merkwaardig hoog aantal sterren voor Umbrador. Schrijver Annekarijn Overduin van de Torre-trilogie haakt ook aan om te vertellen over haar boeken, die goed aansluiten bij het thema van deze Kinderboekenweek. Vandaag Inside-presentator Wilfred Genee maakte vorige week een pittige email openbaar van Carlo van Lienden, de huidige hoofdredacteur van het geplaagde RTL Tonight. Het panel van de AD Media Podcast buigt zich over de vraag: was dit een dubieuze actie van Genee of ‘nu eenmaal typisch VI’? In de bewuste email valt ook de naam van Angela de Jong. Hoe reageert zij op de kwalificatie ‘die AD-heks’? Van Lienden zelf zit er in elk geval mee in zijn maag. En de columnist was in meer programma’s mikpunt van spot. Deze week in de krant het bericht dat woonwinkels Kwantum en Leen Bakker in de financiële problemen zitten. Beide winkels zijn onderdeel van dezelfde moeder, die de afgelopen maanden al een aantal interventies heeft gedaan. Zoals: gezamenlijke inkoop, kostenbesparing en het uitonderhandelen dat een deel van de coronaschuld van 58 miljoen niet terugbetaald hoeft te worden. Mooi, allemaal acties die op de korte termijn borgen dat de winkels door kunnen. Maar kostenbesparing is nooit een langetermijnoplossing van het ontbreken van een ‘fit' met de markt. In deze aflevering van de DNHS podcast bespreken Karin en Marischka wat er dan wel nodig is om uit de problemen te komen (of een kans daarop te hebben). En waardoor deze winkels in de problemen zijn gekomen.

Un informe de UNICF calcula que el retraso con respecto al nivel académico que deberían tener es de siete meses a un año. En los 43 países que aparecen en el informe ocho millones de jóvenes de 15 años carecen de conocimientos funcionales de lectura, escritura y aritmética, lo que significa que no son capaces de comprender un texto básico. Colombia (19%), Costa Rica (20%) y México 20%) presentan los porcentajes más bajos.

In this episode we tour the Passchendaele battlefield with local guide Leen Van Meerbeek. We discover how the tanks floundered in the mud and slime. Leen explains the incredible action of Clement Robertson who was awarded the Victoria Cross and the story of the successful “Cockcroft” action. We also visit Pond Farm and discover a replica tank and also the graves of several “tankies” and tell their stories of bravery and sacrifice. And we listen to a tank poem written by the famous author A A Milne. 

Presentation College Athenry will hope their long wait is over this Monday (St. Patrick's Day - 17th March 2025) when they take on Thurles CBS in the Masita All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Senior A Hurling Final. Galway are also seeking to end a 30-year famine since St. Raphael's, Loughrea were victors in 1995. It's a repeat of the 2023 semi-final when Athenry edged their opponents 0-15 to 0-14.  Aaron Niland, Seán Murphy, Aodhán McDonagh, Darragh Counihan and Michael Fallon are still involved from that victory. This is Presentation's fifth final appearance following defeats in 1976, 2018, 2019 and 2023.  The latter three came at the expense of St. Kieran's, Kilkenny but Presentation Athenry got a measure of revenge in this year's semi-final, winning 4-13 to 2-11 thanks to goals from Oscar Fitzpatrick, Ciarán Leen, Eoin Hannon and Ethan O'Brien.  Thurles CBS, chasing a first title since 2009, overcame Coláiste Bhaile Chláir 0-21 to 0-17 in their semi-final. If you've ever had a peaceful, easy feeling—perhaps brought on by someone who you know won't let you down—then you'll have no problem understanding the earliest meaning of lenient. When it entered English in the mid-1600s, lenient described something soothing—such as a medication—that relieved pain or stress, or otherwise enabled someone to take it easy. For a brief window of time it was even used as a noun, referring to any of various ointments and balms that help heal wounds in the long run.
