Dr Anna Marie Prentiss joins Host Chris Lynn to discuss the origins of institutionalised inequality. Anna is an archaeologist specializing in the ancient history of the Great Plains, Pacific Northwest, and Arctic regions of North America. She has a methodological specialty in lithic technology and theoretical interests in the archaeology of villages and towns, social inequality, hunter-gatherer mobility and technological organization, and the cultural evolutionary process. She is associate editor of the scholarly journal, Current Anthropology. Dr. Prentiss is actively engaged in a long term study of the evolution of complex hunter-gatherer-fisher societies on the interior of British Columbia. The current focus of this research is a multi-year excavation at the Bridge River archaeological site, located near the town of Lillooet, British Columbia. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Dr. Prentiss, along with her students and colleagues conducted major excavations during 2008 and 2009 to examine socio-economic and political changes that occurred during the occupation span of the village. Our guests are Zach Foor, a rehab technician, and Greg Mans, a survivor of a C3 incomplete spinal cord injury. Their friendship began in 2020 at the Recovery Project, a neuro-specialized physical therapy clinic in Livonia, Michigan. He started on March 25, 2024 from Cape Henlopen, Delaware with Greg providing support including occasional in-person visits and virtual encouragement during his rehabilitation. At the heart of this shared journey is the Certain Steps Writing Workshop – an eight-week virtual program led by author and teacher Peter Markus. The workshop is designed for those affected by paralysis and their caregivers, exploring how writing can become a new form of movement. Both Zach and Greg have participated in the program and are now strong advocates raising funds to support another FREE workshop upon the completion of Zach's hike for those interested in participating. Currently Zach has paused his trek in New Albany, Indiana, for the winter, having covered approximately 1,400 miles so far. He plans to find work and save funds for the remainder of the journey with hopes of resuming the hike in the spring or the next year. This follows the arrest of 17-year-old Scott Foor last week. Both suspects are McEachern students. The victims, not McEachern students, were involved in an altercation with a McEachern student when the shooting occurred. Foor shot both victims, while the second suspect also brandished a firearm but did not cause further injuries. Authorities clarified that the incident was targeted, and there's no broad threat to other students. STORY 2: Kennesaw Man Gets 40 Years Behind Bars For Fatal Shooting Conner Harrison Beck, 27, from Kennesaw, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for fatally shooting 24-year-old Ethan Wackermann after an altercation in March 2022. The incident occurred at Beck's apartment near Kennesaw State University. Despite a phone call indicating resolution, Beck shot Wackermann six times about 10 minutes later. Beck did not call 911, and police were notified over an hour later. Wackermann was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds. Police discovered marijuana, THC cartridges, firearms, and evidence of drug sales in Beck's residence. Beck pleaded guilty to various charges, including voluntary manslaughter and trafficking marijuana. He was sentenced to 90 years with the first 40 to be served in prison. Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. emphasized the tragic consequences of Beck's actions.   STORY 3: Marietta Man and Brother Arrested for Participation in Jan. 6 Capitol Breach Brothers Cepane Sarty, 38, of Marietta, and Seth Sarty, 45, of Rockmart, have been charged by the U.S. Department of Justice for their involvement in breaching the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. They face multiple felonies and misdemeanors, including assaulting law enforcement officers and engaging in disorderly conduct. The brothers entered the Capitol building around 2:21 p.m., gathered with rioters, and breached the police line by 2:32 p.m. They entered House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office suite and later participated in assaulting officers. The Sartys left the Capitol after police deployed riot control agents. Over 1,300 individuals have been charged in connection with the Capitol breach. STORY 4: 'A Special Place in Her Heart': New K-9 Kennel Honors Animal-Loving Commissioner The JoAnn Birrell K-9 Annex, a new shelter for the Cobb County Police Department's 11 K-9 officers, was unveiled in Marietta. The annex, located behind Cobb County Animal Services, can house eight K-9s, featuring climate control and a bathing station. Funded largely by Commissioner JoAnn Birrell's $200,000 contingency fund, the facility cost $130,000, with an additional $15,500 for a new dog named Chief. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by officials and community members, with Birrell expressing her lifelong love for animals and dedication to supporting the police. Commissioner Keli Gambrill, overseeing the district where the kennel is located, honored Birrell with the naming, highlighting her longstanding support for the K-9 unit. Cobb Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer praised Birrell's continuous advocacy for the department. The event concluded with a ribbon cutting, celebrating Birrell's commitment to public safety and animals. STORY 5: 'Here We Go Again': The Race for Kennesaw City Council is On The Kennesaw City Council will hold a special election on May 21 to fill the seat left vacant by Robert "Trey" Sinclair, who resigned in January due to relocating outside city limits. Sinclair's departure was unexpected and came just before a court arraignment for a drunk driving incident. The term, originally set until 2025, will be completed by the elected candidate. This marks the third premature vacancy in three years. Qualifying for the election will be held on March 4, 5, and 6, with a fee of $360. The incident occurred in the school's parking lot, leaving two individuals with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Foor, a witness to a physical altercation, produced a pistol and shot both victims. Another unidentified suspect also brandished a firearm, leading to gunfire without causing further injuries. The motive is under investigation, and the police emphasize it was a specific, targeted incident, not posing a broader threat to students. The second shooter remains unidentified. Increased police presence and counseling support are provided at McEachern High School. STORY 2: Man Pleads Guilty to Triple Homicide at Kennesaw Country Club Bryan Rhoden, charged with killing three individuals at a Kennesaw country club in July 2021, has pleaded guilty to murder. Initially facing the death penalty, Rhoden's plea deal ensures life imprisonment without parole. Rhoden murdered golf pro Gene Siller, Henry Valdez, and Paul Pierson. He bound Valdez and Pierson, transporting them to the golf course where he killed them. Rhoden pleaded guilty to 17 charges, including malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a felony, and tampering with evidence. He received consecutive life imprisonment sentences without parole, ensuring he spends the rest of his life behind bars. STORY 3: Kennesaw Man Indicted in August Shooting Death of 15-Year-Old Lorenz McNeill, 22, from Kennesaw, was indicted by a Cobb grand jury for the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Tayshawn Omari Dean in August 2023. McNeill faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, possession of a firearm during a felony, and reckless conduct. The indictment states that McNeill aimed a semiautomatic handgun at Dean without checking if it was unloaded, resulting in a fatal shot to the back. Acworth Police found Dean unresponsive at Cobblestone Landing Apartments, and despite immediate first aid, he was pronounced dead at Kennestone Hospital. STORY 5: Power-Jackson Cabin Gets Funding for Relocation Cobb Landmarks has successfully raised the funds required to relocate the Power-Jackson Cabin, believed to be Cobb County's oldest structure. With an initial goal of $65,000, the funds reached an estimated $73,000. The plan is to relocate the cabin to Hyde Farm Park, a county-owned park in east Cobb. The cabin, potentially predating the Cherokee Land Lotteries of 1832 and 1833, is a "rived" log house, unique in construction. Osborne accounting teacher Michael Devault guides students in preparing taxes for community members with incomes of $64,000 or less. This initiative aims to provide free tax preparation services while educating students about the tax filing process. Osborne is reportedly the only high school in Georgia and one of 50-60 high schools in the country offering a tax preparation class. The students' involvement helps them gain valuable skills while contributing to their community. STORY 7: Cobb School Board Chair Slams County's Transit Tax Proposal Randy Scamihorn, the Republican Chair of Cobb County School District, criticized the proposed 30-year transit tax (Mobility Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax - M-SPLOST) in a blog post, stating that it is "bad for Cobb County and our future." The M-SPLOST aims to implement a 1% sales tax to fund transportation projects, including 108 miles of rapid bus routes and new transit centers. STORY 2: Arrest made in shooting death of Lawrenceville bakery owner Lawrenceville police have arrested Leroy Taylor, 38, of McDonough, in connection with the shooting death of Ervin Fejzic, the owner of Fejzic Bakery. Taylor faces charges including felony murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, possession of a firearm during a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The incident occurred Saturday morning, with police responding to a "person shot" call. Fejzic was found in the bakery parking lot, unconscious and suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to revive him, Fejzic was pronounced dead at the scene. Lawrenceville police believe no other suspects are involved and urge anyone with information to contact them. STORY 3: Longtime GDOT Board Member Rudy Bowen Named Gwinnett Chamber's Citizen Of The Year Longtime Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Board Member Rudy Bowen, known for advocating Gwinnett County's fair share of transportation funding, received the Gwinnett Chamber's Citizen of the Year Award. Bowen, active on the GDOT Board for nearly 18 years, was praised for his integrity and community involvement. Born in Atlanta and raised in Dawson County, Bowen has contributed to various local and state initiatives, pushing projects like the I-85 interchange at McGinnis Ferry Road. Bowen, also involved in community organizations, has been recognized for his impactful efforts in transportation and beyond. Break 2: TOM WAGES   STORY 4: Gas in Georgia 30.6 cents a gallon lower than a year ago Average gasoline prices in Georgia have dropped by 1.4 cents per gallon over the past week, reaching $2.99/gallon, according to GasBuddy's survey. Prices in the state are 4.3 cents higher than a month ago but 30.6 cents lower than a year ago. Nationally, the average gasoline price has risen by 4.3 cents per gallon in the last week, currently at $3.12/gallon. The national average is up 4 cents from a month ago but 32.5 cents lower than a year ago. GasBuddy's Patrick De Haan anticipates a potential acceleration in price increases towards the end of the month, with temporary drops replaced by higher prices closer to spring. STORY 5: Grayson Father And Son Authors To Celebrate Black History Month By Giving Away Books on African-American History Grayson resident Michael Carson and his son Matthew, authors of five books on African-American history, have decided to give back by donating 1,000 copies of their latest book, "Unsung African-American History Makers," to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in downtown Atlanta. As part of Black History Month, the Carsons will be present at the museum on February 24 to sign and distribute the books. They aim to highlight lesser-known figures in African-American history who made significant contributions. The Carsons have previously donated books to schools and Boys & Girls Clubs, and this larger-scale donation aligns with their desire to impact the community positively.   Break 3:    STORY 6: Peachtree Corners Mayor Mike Mason To Speak at Christ Episcopal Church Peachtree Corners Mayor Mike Mason will be the speaker at the Men's Civic Breakfast of Christ Episcopal Church on Saturday, Feb. 13. The breakfast, open to men in the community, will be held at 8 a.m. in Webster Hall of Christ Church at 400 Holcomb Bridge Road in Norcross. Mason, a resident of Peachtree Corners for over 30 years, has served as mayor since the city's incorporation in 2012. He is the mayor of the largest city in Gwinnett County, representing 42,108 residents. Mason is also the owner of Mason CFO Advisory and has a background in finance, holding an MBA from the University of Evansville. STORY 7: FBI Looking For New York Murder Suspect With Metro Atlanta Ties The FBI is seeking the assistance of metro Atlanta residents in locating Mtayari Dixon, a murder suspect wanted in connection with a crime that occurred in New Rochelle, New York, on October 26, 2022. Dixon, 31, is believed to have ties to the Atlanta area and may have traveled there after the murder. A reward of up to $10,000 is offered for information leading to Dixon's arrest. Charged with murder in November 2022, Dixon is considered armed and dangerous.
