Were the secularists right in their declaration that religion is in the museum of history or is religion far from dead in 2025? It's a question provoked by a recent lecture given in Maynooth university in County Kildare by one of the best-known theologians from these islands. Dr Anna Rowlands, who is professor of Catholic social thought at Durham University and a recent advisor to the Vatican, told the gathering that not only is the political significance of religion rising, but new forms of religious and post-religious practice are emerging in both the global north and south. She joined the Sunday Sequence debate chaired by Audrey Carville. Also in the discussion is the theologian Professor Laurence Kirkpatrick and human rights defender Baroness Nuala O'Loan.

“  We're very lucky that we've inherited this wonderful backdrop, but everything that we do is based around socializing and how we can use these spaces with our friends and our family. Yes, we like to party, the Irish love to party. So, that extends not just within the interiors, but into the grounds.” We're in great company with James Fennell, the proud steward of Burtown House and Gardens in County Kildare, Ireland, an 18th-century Georgian Villa that he and his family have called home - growing their food and nourishing their soil naturally for over 150 years.  For decades, this has been an ever evolving project - inspired by personal travels and created for travelers to discover - a historic property turned haven for flora and fauna. Today, three generations of the Fennell family welcome guests to come and experience their bounty of creativity and wellbeing, their blend of sustainability and heritage. In this episode, James, a modern day Renaissance man, tells a tale of success out of struggle, and paints a picture of prosperity - for this place and the people who seek out to experience it.  Top Takeaways [1:40] James' childhood growing up at Burtown House was a contrast of grandeur and hardship - growing up in a beautiful yet crumbling estate, living in the basement while grand rooms sat unused - all while recognizing and refining this ‘diamond in the rough', as he took the painstaking steps of preserving his family's historic home. [8:20] It was a modern-day fairy tale for James and Joanna - friends at first as they patiently waited for the stars to align - falling in love with each other and the beauty of other cultures as they traveled the world pursuing photography and interior design careers until fate called them home.   [15:50] James always had a vision for Burtown, yet it is a vision that is ever-evolving to this day. Realizing early on that restoring its natural beauty and bounty was not enough, it needed to be shared. [20:00] Whether guests are coming for a taste of what is in season at the Green Barn Restaurant, to stroll through the gardens for a special gathering, to pack a picnic full of their favorite finds from Jo's Pantry, or to settle in for the night in the Stable Yard - there is a touch of rustic elegance woven throughout their experience, with big flavors and bright flowers abound.  [35:30] With their three talented children coming of age and all creatives in their own rights, James and Jo are busy setting the stage for them within the family business - bringing about new projects from bespoke cask whiskey called Burtown Bonded to sustainable cabins and sculpture gardens to fruit orchards and a boutique stay at their sister property in Portugal.      Notable Mentions Doherty Sculpture Park Head Chef Sylvain Costrowa, The Green Barn Restaurant  Charles Dowding, English Horticulturalist Wendy Walsh, Botanical Artist Restaurant de Kas, Amsterdam  At Your Service TV Series The Pig “Restaurants with Rooms”, England Visit For Yourself Burtown House Website | @burtown_house

featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2830: James Joyce Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 2 February 2025 is James Joyce.James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) was an Irish novelist, poet and literary critic. He contributed to the modernist avant-garde movement and is regarded as one of the most influential and important writers of the 20th century. Joyce's novel Ulysses (1922) is a landmark in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in a variety of literary styles, particularly stream of consciousness. Other well-known works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). His other writings include three books of poetry, a play, letters, and occasional journalism.Joyce was born in Dublin into a middle-class family. He attended the Jesuit Clongowes Wood College in County Kildare, then, briefly, the Christian Brothers–run O'Connell School. Despite the chaotic family life imposed by his father's unpredictable finances, he excelled at the Jesuit Belvedere College and graduated from University College Dublin in 1902. In 1904, he met his future wife, Nora Barnacle, and they moved to mainland Europe. He briefly worked in Pula and then moved to Trieste in Austria-Hungary, working as an English instructor. Except for an eight-month stay in Rome working as a correspondence clerk and three visits to Dublin, Joyce resided there until 1915. In Trieste, he published his book of poems Chamber Music and his short story collection Dubliners, and he began serially publishing A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in the English magazine The Egoist. During most of World War I, Joyce lived in Zürich, Switzerland, and worked on Ulysses. After the war, he briefly returned to Trieste and then moved to Paris in 1920, which became his primary residence until 1940.Ulysses was first published in Paris in 1922, but its publication in the United Kingdom and the United States was prohibited because of its perceived obscenity. Copies were smuggled into both countries and pirated versions were printed until the mid-1930s, when publication finally became legal. Joyce started his next major work, Finnegans Wake, in 1923, publishing it sixteen years later in 1939. Between these years, Joyce travelled widely. He and Nora were married in a civil ceremony in London in 1931. He made a number of trips to Switzerland, frequently seeking treatment for his increasingly severe eye problems and psychological help for his daughter, Lucia. When France was occupied by Germany during World War II, Joyce moved back to Zürich in 1940. He died there in 1941 after surgery for a perforated ulcer, at age 58.Ulysses frequently ranks high in lists of great books, and the academic literature analysing his work is extensive and ongoing. Many writers, film-makers, and other artists have been influenced by his stylistic innovations, such as his meticulous attention to detail, use of interior monologue, wordplay, and the radical transformation of traditional plot and character development. Though most of his adult life was spent abroad, his fictional universe centres on Dublin and is largely populated by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies and friends from his time there. Ulysses in particular is set in the streets and alleyways of the city. Joyce is quoted as saying, "For myself, I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal."This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:49 UTC on Sunday, 2 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see James Joyce on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Niamh.

Why do we have to leave? This is better than Disney World! And the teenagers want to know how quickly I can come back, what age I need to be to become a volunteer. ”But the serious fun of swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, arts & crafts, and putting on plays rests on a foundation of solid governance, a quality that attracted our additional guest Tony Dunne, Bank of Ireland's US CFO, COO & US Country Manager, to chair the friend-raising and fundraising-focused Barretstown Foundation USA. It has been almost two years since the death of The Wanted star Tom Parker after he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in 2020 aged 33. His wife, Kelsey Parker, announced last month that, after a lot of reflection, it was time to take off her wedding rings. Kelsey tells Anita Rani about the decision and how she has dealt with her grief. The Ukrainian government says it has identified 20,000 children who have been abducted by Russian forces. This week saw 11 Ukrainian children reunited with their families. The BBC's Hague Correspondent, Anna Holligan, and filmmaker Shahida Tulaganova, who directed the ITV documentary Ukraine's Stolen Children, discuss. Wicked Little Letters is a new black comedy film set in Littlehampton in the 1920s. It follows two neighbours, deeply conservative Edith Swan played by Olivia Colman and rowdy Irish single mother Rose Gooding played by Jessie Buckley. When Edith and other residents begin to receive poisonous pen letters full of obscenities, potty mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The director, Thea Sharrock joined Emma Barnett to discuss this true story, and the parallels with trolling on social media today. How do black girls and women experience education in Britain today? Sociologist Dr April-Louise Pennant of Cardiff University joined Emma to discuss why Black Caribbean girls are excluded from school at double the rate of white girls and why intersectionality means the issue of afro hair continues to affect black girls' education today. She explores these issues and more in her book, Babygirl, You've Got This! Experiences of Black Girls and Women in the English Education System. fWotD Episode 2477: Ernest Shackleton Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Thursday, 15 February 2024 is Ernest Shackleton.Ernest Henry Shackleton (15 February 1874 – 5 January 1922) was an Anglo-Irish Antarctic explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic. He was one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.Born in Kilkea, County Kildare, Ireland, Shackleton and his Anglo-Irish family moved to Sydenham in suburban south London when he was ten. Shackleton's first experience of the polar regions was as third officer on Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery Expedition of 1901–1904, from which he was sent home early on health grounds, after he and his companions Scott and Edward Adrian Wilson set a new southern record by marching to latitude 82°S. During the Nimrod Expedition of 1907–1909, he and three companions established a new record Farthest South latitude of 88°23′ S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles or 180 kilometres) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Also, members of his team climbed Mount Erebus, the most active Antarctic volcano. On returning home, Shackleton was knighted for his achievements by King Edward VII.After the race to the South Pole ended in December 1911, with Roald Amundsen's conquest, Shackleton turned his attention to the crossing of Antarctica from sea to sea, via the pole. To this end, he made preparations for what became the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917. The expedition was struck by disaster when its ship, Endurance, became trapped in pack ice and finally sank in the Weddell Sea off Antarctica on 21 November 1915. The crew escaped by camping on the sea ice until it disintegrated, then by launching the lifeboats to reach Elephant Island and ultimately the South Atlantic island of South Georgia, enduring a stormy ocean voyage of 720 nautical miles (1,330 km; 830 mi) in Shackleton's most famous exploit. He returned to the Antarctic with the Shackleton–Rowett Expedition in 1921, but died of a heart attack while his ship was moored in South Georgia. At his wife's request, he remained on the island and was buried in Grytviken cemetery. The wreck of Endurance was discovered just over a century after Shackleton's death. Away from his expeditions, Shackleton's life was generally restless and unfulfilled. In his search for rapid pathways to wealth and security, he launched business ventures which failed to prosper, and he died heavily in debt. Upon his death, he was lauded in the press but was thereafter largely forgotten, while the heroic reputation of his rival Scott was sustained for many decades. Later in the 20th century, Shackleton was "rediscovered", and became a role model for leadership in extreme circumstances. In his 1956 address to the British Science Association, one of Shackleton's contemporaries, Sir Raymond Priestley, said "Scott for scientific method, Amundsen for speed and efficiency but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton", paraphrasing what Apsley Cherry-Garrard had written in a preface to his 1922 memoir The Worst Journey in the World. In 2002, Shackleton was voted eleventh in a BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:25 UTC on Thursday, 15 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Ernest Shackleton on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Kimberly Standard.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) are recruiting up to 250 staff, including a large number of high-value civil and structural engineering roles, over the next twelve months. The ongoing and accelerated recruitment campaign comes as a result of the OPW's increased funding secured under the National Development Plan (NDP) 2021 – 2030. Under the NDP, the OPW has been allocated €2.457 billion, including €99m from the EU under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). In addition, the OPW will manage a wide range of projects for client Departments and State agencies with an estimated value of up to €1.6 billion bringing the overall value of projects managed by the organisation to over €4 billion. Key projects to be completed as a part of this investment include a large infrastructure project at Rosslare Europort, the new Forensic Science Laboratory in the Backweston Campus in County Kildare, and a significant number of projects under capital investment programmes including the Garda Capital Programme and the Flood Risk Management investment programme. Welcoming the recruitment campaign, Minister for the Office of Public Works, Patrick O'Donovan TD said, “With the significant investment in works on major cultural institutions, large Flood Risk and Estate Management infrastructure projects and heritage site restoration and maintenance, and the increased complexity and volume of the projects and programmes being managed by the OPW, we are delighted to offer this diverse range of job opportunities. These roles will offer candidates the opportunity to build a better future for themselves and for others, and to work with one of Ireland's most diverse and long-standing Government bodies. The OPW is an essential service provider to the Government and the public and its key strength is its workforce, and the invaluable source of innovative and specialist skills it provides.” With investment in some of its heritage sites co-funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media through Fáilte Ireland, the OPW is recruiting over 100 heritage-related positions. While the operational, civil service and apprenticeships positions will offer a number of interesting and varied opportunities, drawing from a wide range of backgrounds and skill sets, the heritage guide positions will offer applicants the chance to play a vital role in conserving and presenting Ireland's most important heritage sites and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of their visitors. The OPW is taking a stand at the National Ploughing Championships from Tuesday 20th to Thursday 22nd of September, inviting visitors to gain a key insight into the range of opportunities available. Events will include Q&A sessions with architects, engineers and heritage site guides, as well as furniture restoration and stonemasonry demonstrations. Positions are advertised on www.gov.ie/opwjobs and OPW social media channels, while information on apprenticeships are available on the Solas website at www.apprenticeship.ie. Those interested in Civil Service General, Professional and Technical positions can register for email notifications and apply online through www.publicjobs.ie.

JyellowL, shiv, Kojaque and Gemma Dunleavy, four key voices on the Dublin music scene, discuss the art of storytelling, the importance of showing up, and how being an artist is a walking contradiction. JyellowL is a Nigerian-born rapper based in Dublin, Ireland. Influenced by the city's thriving underground hip-hop scene, his music is packed with socially conscious lyrics that deal with everything from racism to the climate crisis. His debut album 2020 Division was nominated for Irish Album of the Year at the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Awards, and his track Ozone featured on the FIFA 20 soundtrack. DJ-turned-singer-songwriter shiv was born in Zimbabwe and raised in Ireland's County Kildare. Her music blends lo-fi hip-hop beats with elements of R&B and neo-soul to create a sound which she calls “emotional escapism”. Her latest EP, The Love Interlude, was released in 2021. Rapper, producer and visual artist Kojaque was born and raised in Dublin. His sound blends elements of hip-hop and jazz with poetic lyricism. He co-founded Soft Boy Records in 2015, and has toured with the likes of Slowthai and Lana Del Rey, collaborated with Swedish-born rapper Luka Palm, and performed at festivals including SXSW and Glastonbury. Gemma Dunleavy is a songwriter, producer and north inner-city Dubliner known for experimenting with instruments like the harp and flute. She blends her love of pop and club music with traditional storytelling, and has collaborated with the likes of Murlo, DJ Sharda and Swing Ting. In her own words, her songs “each represent something I've experienced, someone I've been, someone I am or someone I've lost.”
