Almost every city in the modern world faces the difficult challenge of understanding its citizens' opinions and turning them into meaningful decisions. Miloš Švaňa, a PhD student at Technical University of Ostrava, has decided to focus on this topic in his dissertation, with an aim to develop a framework for social media data analysis. By using fuzzy logic and fuzzy set theory to help municipalities understand the needs of their citizens, Švaňa uses this information to inform better decision making.Read more from Miloš in an upcoming chapter of Springer Fuzzy Management Methods. "If you look carefully at life, you see blur. Shake your hand. Blur is part of life." -- William Klein "Do not mistake sharpness for truth." -- Peter Henry Emerson In this episode, Antonio and Ward embark on an enlightening discussion about starting a photography collective. Drawing from their experience in building their own photography group, they provide invaluable tips and advice on the importance of having a common gathering place, patience, and evolving organically. Antonio pays tribute to recently departed friend and fellow photographer, Mel DiGiacomo, whose approach to capturing the essence of life has deeply impacted his own work. Through personal reflections, Antonio shares how Mel's distinct and authentic style, characterized by its raw and candid nature, challenged and reshaped his perspective on photography. This tribute to Mel is both intimate and enlightening, offering listeners a glimpse into the lasting legacy of a photographer who truly understood the power of the medium to tell compelling stories. The conversation shifts to explore the artistic use of intentional blur in photography. Antonio and Ward discuss how embracing blur can add a layer of emotion and movement to images, encouraging photographers to experiment with focus to convey the fleeting nature of moments and memories. This part of the discussion is not just about technical advice; it's a philosophical exploration of how imperfection and abstraction can enhance the narrative quality of a photograph. By inviting listeners to reconsider the conventional pursuit of sharpness, the Street Shots guys champion a more introspective and expressive approach to photography, underscoring the medium's capacity to capture the intangible and evoke deep, personal connections. In their neverending quest to understand how past and present science fiction relate, Colin and Phil explore FUZZIES. FUZZY NATION is a novel by John Scalzi which re-boots an earlier novel by H. Beam Piper, LITTLE FUZZY. Fuzzies are cute little creatures that use tools and form extended families. They behave as if they are intelligent - so should they be legally classed as "people" or "animals"? We also have our usual run through of recommendations of past, present and future science fiction. Technology has become increasingly responsive to human behaviour, with AI tools and machine learning in high demand in modern society. The unpredictability and vagueness of human perception, however, is incredibly hard to capture, and there remains a certain gap in communication between biological and technological systems. Moreno Colombo and colleagues at the Human-IST Institute in Fribourg, Switzerland, in conjunction with the FMsquare Foundation, have investigated the concept of 'computing with words' by way of handling imprecision in the interaction between humans and machines, a branch of 'fuzzy logic' that has wide and varied applications. The history of logic tells us that the binary-based logic proposed by Aristotle was, and continues to be, a pervasive force. Logic does, however, have a complex history and, in more recent years, the concept of 'fuzzy-logic' has emerged as a counter to the rigidity of Aristotelian logic and decision making. Fuzzy logic is an attempt to bridge the gap between mathematics and the fuzzy way humans naturally talk, think, and interact with the world. Edy Portmann is a transdisciplinary researcher and professor of soft and cognitive computing at the Human-IST Institute of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. As president of the Swiss-based FMsquare Foundation, Portmann is a fuzzy-logic evangelist on a mission to raise awareness of the importance of non-Aristotelian thinking in science and technology. The Catholic Herald Podcast: Merely Catholic with Gavin Ashenden
The Rev. Dr Patrick Pullicino returns to “Merely Catholic”, the podcast series for the Catholic Herald, to talk about the presence of science in the Old Testament Book of Ezekiel. Fr Pullicino, a retired NHS consultant neurologist who now serves as a priest for the Archdiocese of Southwark, speaks to Dr Gavin Ashenden, in this 40th episode, about his 218-page thesis on “The Science of Ezekiel's Chariot of YHWH Vision as a Synthesis of Reason and Spirit”. He reveals that “Fuzzy Epistemology”, a concept formulated by a 20th century philosopher and used today in digital household devices like Alexa and Siri, is present in one of the most puzzling and cryptic books of the Old Testament, reinforcing his view of the compatibility of science with religion, and faith with reason.

Programming codes are traditionally based on binary numbering systems–everything is expressed in values of 0 or 1 in line with the true or false principles of classical logic. Fuzzy logic is different in that it takes a non-binary approach and allows for infinite values between 0 and 1.Andreas Meier, emeritus professor of data science at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, is on a mission to raise awareness of the importance of fuzzy-based computing for business, government and society.Read more about his research in Fuzzy Management Methods, here: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-03368-2

Our guest today is Michelle Tam, founder and co-creator of the renowned Nom Nom Paleo universe. Dubbed the Queen of Paleo Cooking, she's co-authored several cookbooks, The New York Times bestselling Nom Nom Paleo, Food for Humans, Ready or Not, and her most recent Nom Nom Paleo: Let's Go!. She is devoted to sharing paleo, gluten-free and Whole30 recipes, kitchen tips and tricks with a focus on ancestral health, quick and easy eats, and staying paleo while on the go. We chat about her initial discovery of paleo and how it successfully addressed digestion issues earlier in her life before delving into the ways the wide-reaching career that's come from it has impacted how she and her family eats on a daily basis. Along the way, we also get some great kitchen gadget recommendations, talk about boundaries and social media expectations, and hash out a Cracklin' Chicken recipe that will work for any busy family. More than a pure paleo evangelist, she thinks people should figure out what works for them in terms of diet, and actually pay attention to how food makes them feel. It's a fresh take, and one that we're hearing more and more of in the space as we move away from strict regimens and all-for-one wellness advice. This week Fuzzy Logic celebrates Earth Science Week as Broderick talks to Nick Brown and Anna Riddell both geodetic scientists from Geoscience Australia. They explain and explore the world of geodesy and the role it plays in helping us track the movements across our planet and the movements of our planet to make sure our GPS is accurate for our journeys, along with many other applications. Thanks to Geoscience Australia for providing these two amazing scientists for this week's episode.
There's a contemporary drive for artificial intelligence to be more precise and, in being so, more human. Yet some argue that our lack of precision is at the core of what actually makes us human. Graphic designer James Goggin has been revisiting Fuzzy Logic, an intentionally imprecise computational theory first conceived back in 1965.
Is the climate crisis a science problem? Not according to our speaker. Climate change is caused by people - us - and must be resolved by people. We have the tools if only we can use them. In this talk with the Canberra Jung Society, Fuzzy Logic's Rod Taylor discusses the psychology of climate change and the other environmental problems. What does it mean to have 'hope' and how do we convert despair into action? These stories are inspired by his book Ten Journeys on a Fragile Planet. With thanks to our friends at the Canberra Jung Society.
TODAY'S GUEST Dave Johnson is a lecturer at the Stanford Law School and at the Stanford d.school, where he teaches negotiation through design thinking. Before Stanford, he worked as a lawyer for 20 years in Silicon Valley tech companies. His most recent articles are designed for legal systems and designing online mediation. He's currently writing a book under the working title, Climate Change Activism by Design. EPISODE SUMMARY In this conversation we talk about: The role of law and how design can make it better. His ideas on climate change and climate change activism. How object-oriented programming and design, and the philosophy behind it, could be implemented in the world of law. Chaos theory, object-oriented modeling, and fuzzy logic. The question of what is law, norms versus laws, spaghetti code in law versus object-oriented and object modeling. The legislative system as all input and no output. His involvement and passion for climate change and climate change activism, and how he wanted to inspire more people to become active and activists, rather than an activist. The issue of individuals who are following climate trends and climate science, and getting really overwhelmed and feeling that there's not much they can do as individuals. And giving those individuals the tools to organize, collaborate, arrange small teams around specific tasks, and build a real force for change from the ground up. We spoke at the end of March, 2022, and I was excited to get into this conversation because I love the idea of law and policy by design. I really think that the legal institutions and laws and policies are some of our most powerful tools for keeping chaos at bay and for keeping society functioning properly. And I really believe that tools from the world of design, particularly empathy and ideation, prototyping and testing, and iteration — that a lot of these core practices could really bring a lot of value in the world of law. So seeing that Dave is straddling these two worlds was very interesting to me. This conversation with Dave is one of a dozen or so weekly conversations we already have lined up for you with thinkers, designers, makers, authors, entrepreneurs, and investors who are working to change our world for the better. So follow this podcast on your favorite podcast app, or head over to remakepod.org to subscribe. And now let's jump right in with Dave Johnson. Sit down and enjoy some beers while listening to Dave, George and Rich tell the Aether Brewing Story - between them, they make up the Owner (Dave), Head Brewer (George) and the Sales & Marketing Manager (Rich). Aether Brewing is one of the longstanding Craft Breweries in Brisbane and were originally located in Milton. The business has now relocated to Sandgate, the team has changed and the focus is now more heavily focussed on brewing a large volume of delicious beer rather than operating as a venue. You'll get a chance to hear the full story of Aether Brewing in this podcast including the 20 hour days that started the business; Dave telling the story of the partnership split with Jimmy from Milton Common; George weighs in on his experience working as a brewer at one of the largest breweries in the world, Carlsberg; and we run through the Aether range while discussing the evolution of craft beer both in Australia and abroad. There's plenty to love here and, if you've never tried Aether Beer, check out their range at your local bottle shop and see if you can get your hands on some of their special releases like the Peanut Butter Stout, which we discuss here. If you're not into beer, check out their very popular Ginger Beerd or their range of Fuzzy Logic seltzers (Passionfruit Pavlova is my pick).
I met up with my friend Erin Fox recently at the Fishtown Diner in Philly to have breakfast for dinner and we had a fascinating conversation that actually lasted long after the lavalier mics were turned off, but what we did capture in the recording was the backstory of a person who truly embodies the name of her alt rock band Resilient, because she has faced down some serious life and career challenges to stay the least. Whether it was playing bar gigs in her Mom's cover band since the age of 7, or signing shady music biz contracts by the time she was in her teens, or having brain surgery in her 20's, Erin Fox has survived things that would absolutely have broken some people. Yet, she pushes forth and just keeps getting better at her craft. Her 2021 album Fuzzy Logic sounds like a lost mid-60's baroque pop classic, with soaring melodies, sophisticated chord changes, and lush instrumentation. I'm extremely grateful she took the time to have this conversation with me. I hope you'll take a listen and enjoy!

This epsiode Fuzzy Logic celebrates Earth Science Week with Geoscience Australia dishing the dirt on how soil is solving crimes around Australia. Dr Patrice de Caritat starts the episode by sharing how researchers in Canberra trialled a new method of tracking criminals using soil. Next up, Natalie Schroeder takes us back in time to share how Australia's first female Commonwealth palaeontologist helped to solve a crime in 1952 using her knowledge of fossils. Finally, Dr Keith Sircombe explains how a machine that uses radioactivity to date ancient rocks was used to match gunshot residue. A show full of ground-breaking research. Special thanks to Geoscience Australia for access to these amazing earth scientists.

In this episode, Siwan is joined by author Rod Taylor to discuss Rod's new book ‘Ten Journeys on a Fragile Planet'. Rod's book follows the stories of ten inspiring Australians who are confronting our changing climate in unique ways. Rod broadcasts a weekly science show and appears on ABC and BBC radio shows. He also writes a column in the Canberra Times called Fuzzy Logic. This podcast discusses the importance of people, technology and political institutions in addressing climate change. Rod and Siwan talk about the different ways they keep hope for the future of the planet and how being curious and asking the right questions can be powerful.
One of the biggest challenges facing us today is how to source the energy that drives our economy and our society. Where do we get the energy to replace dirty fossil fuels? While renewables are clearly the future, it's crucial to fill the gaps in variable demand. That's where batteries and pumped hydro step in, but are they enough? Tony Irwin is Associate Professor at the ANU and Technical Director at SMR Technology. For a slice of nuclear history, our earlier Fuzzy Logic begins with an interview by Professor Robert Street. His is a remarkable story, having worked on the first nuclear reactor at Harwell, UK. Interview by Rod
This week on Fuzzy Logic, Pint of Science has taken over! Broderick discusses emotions and robots with two local scientists from the University of Canberra who join us thanks to the 2021 Pint of Science Festival. Associate Professor Damith Herath shares what it means to be a roboticist while PhD candidate Keira Bai shares how she's using AI to detect microemotions. Like last weeks show, the title of this episode combines a song name (Fuzzy Logic) by Ghost Funk Orchestra, with an album name (Satis Factory) by Mattiel, and it features an assorted blend of contemporary funk, chill vibes and good ol' Rock & Roll. Also included on this set are tracks from: Gitkin, Traffik Island, Yin Yin and more!
Hello Groovers, This week we are excited to be visited by DJ Thomas Overly, from Washington DC, who is fresh back from a tour of the Antarctic. Really, he spun some hot burning tunes on the ice, and whilst he was at it, also did some scientific research. And, together with Fuzzy Logic, the science show on 2XX FM, we are going to take you on a ride over the ice, discuss melting glaciers, climate change and individual action we can take on climate change. It was absolutely marvellous to have Thomas in the studio, and we ended up doing a B2B gig on the same day! Keep your ears peeled for it..... Good times! Deejay Maarten Vlot QC Liquid Sunshine is a weekly radio show in Canberra, Australia, playing the best Deep Funk, Rare Groove, Disco & Beats - All The Good Stuff. On this episode of Fuzzy Logic we had three researchers from the Australian National University (ANU): Alena Kimbrough a paleoclimate scientist who has been researching rainfall in Indonesia over the past 380, 000 years by analysing stalagmites from caves in Sulawesi. Katharine Grant, also a paleoclimate scientist who uses ocean sediment cores to gain understanding of the earth's past climate even further back in time. Rebecca Colvin, a social scientist who is working to understand how human group behavior effects our relationship with issues such as climate change.
Political leaders are fond of saying we need a Big Australia, but what does that really mean? How long can our beautiful arid land keep supporting more and more people? Do we need to keep growing to pump the economy? Lish Fejer from ABC local radio interviews Rod from Fuzzy Logic. During the broadcast, Lish mentions Worldometers which shows startling real-time numbers for world population and other statistics.
Today on Fuzzy Logic we look at how the first Australian's arrived and Broderick delves into the world of animals and accents. Episode originally aired on 23 June, 2019.
We all hate weeds, right? But what is a weed anyway? How about say, wheat. Or corn, or oats. Are they weeds? The battle in Australia with prickly pear is legendary, and there's even a memorial to the Cactoblastis moth that helped bring them under control. It turns out that the prickly pear could be a valuable nutritious crop that grows in our drying land, and our guest today is a self-admitted fan. Caroline Gouws is a PhD student at the University of Canberra who's looking at its processing and nutrional benefits. Maybe the spikey invader has a place after all if we're prepared to give it a go. We even sampled some on-air. But careful to not wipe it on our cloths...because it's also a nifty dye! Interview by Rod While you're here Present your research at the New Investigator Forum, 6 June at JCSMR You can help Fuzzy Logic by subscribing to 2xx. Thanks!
On a windy Canberra day we grabbed a quick interview with speakers at the Canberra March for Science. Professor Frank Bowden, Dr Emma-Kate Potter and Dr Wendy Elford. On the surface, Toby Hendy and Tom Body are working on wildly different fields...but both are interested in walls. Or barriers. To invade a plant cell, a pathogen has to punch its way through the cell's wall. One way they do that is by physical force. Toby studies how cells respond to something pushing on their surface. Hint: it involves needles. Very. Small. Needles. Tom is all so studying walls - but for him the walls are a fusion reactor. How do you put the Sun in a bottle? Hint: it's tricky and a bit like an air bag. Tom is about to head off to the presitgious Max Planck institute. So what's a day like on Fuzzy Logic? Keep an eye out for Toby's Youtube. Brought to you by Rod @FuzzyLogicSci with Andrew Leach.
Welcome to 2017! In this week's episode of Fuzzy Logic, Eleanor and Mitchell talk about cycles. Whether it's the 365 day cycle around the sun, complex cycles of precession and tilt that alter Earth's climate, or the Sun's natural cycle through high and low activity periods, these kinds of patterns are all around us. Tune in to hear Mitchell's "New Years Resolution" and Eleanor try to explain that the Gregorian Calendar was *not* invented by a guy called Gregor.
It's easy to love a panda, a monkey, or an beautifully coloured bird, but spare a thought for the humble fly. These tireless workers aren't just the ones that buzz around your bbq sausage. There's a huge range of species that eat aphids and pollinate flowers. And now Canberra startup Goterra is turning Black Soldier Fly larvae into stock feed. Turn garbage into food, build an industry in Canberra, and slow the dumping of waste into land fille. Dr Bryan (the Fly Guy) Lessard's mission is to celebrate the true worth of the fly. Read his story in Fuzzy Logic's Fairfax column. Olympia Yarger from Goterra joins Bryan and Rod for today's celebration of flies.
