Welcome to a super special episode -- not just because it's the 100th episode, though I've gotta say I'm pretty proud of that, and so grateful to all of the artists who've given their time and been open to this conversation, but also because this episode features one of my favorite interviews from the podcast so far. I have been a deep admirer of Future Islands' music, and Samuel T. Herring's soulfulness and poeticism as a singer and writer, since the band's early albums, and I loved hearing him share so many meaningful facets of his creative journey in this conversation. We talked about the excellent new Future Islands album, People Who Aren't There Anymore, as well as Sam's recent work on his own - the music he's been releasing as Hemlock Ernst and his recent acting role in the Apple TV series The Changeling, and much more.
«People Who Aren't There Anymore» ist das aktuelle Sounds! Album der Woche. Wir verlosen täglich Vinyl und CDs - nur live im Radio.

The Baltimore-based synth-pop band Future Islands was first thrust into the national spotlight in 2014 after making their TV debut on The Late Show With David Letterman. The band's unassuming frontman Samuel T. Herring danced ecstatically around the stage seething with emotion. The performance quickly went viral, making it one of Letterman's most memorable live appearances of all time. At the time of their big break, Future Islands had already released three albums and been touring relentlessly for nearly a decade. And while they would become one of the most prominent bands on the festival circuit for the next several years, Future Islands has always maintained a sense of unparalleled raw vulnerability on-stage—in part because of the deeply confessional nature of Sam's songwriting and electric stage presence. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Future Islands lead singer Samuel T. Herring about the band's latest album, People Who Aren't There Anymore. Samuel also describes the physical toll his energetic performance style has taken on his body over the years. And his long-held gripe with guitar-based music. You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite Future Islands songs HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by Future Islands lead vocalist, writer, actor and rapper SAMUEL T. HERRING!What an episode... Samuel was generous enough with his time to give us a full 90mins-ish of pure goodness which will entirely appeal to already-down Future Islands appreciators, but will likely turn a few ears towards their music if not already familiar. Saumel's presence is warm, fun and witty and it's a brilliantly entertaining ride through thoughts about performance, influence, emotion. big life moments, rap music (he's a proper head, have no doubt), ambition, 'that' performance, hurry up and wait, acting, zombie state while on tour, and whole bunch more. In episode #156 of The XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar meets Future Islands frontman Samuel T. Herring to discuss their new album, People Who Aren't There Anymore, released on 26 January 2024. The seventh album from the band - Samuel T. Herring (vocals, lyrics), William Cashion (bass, guitars), Gerrit Welmers (keyboards, programming), and Michael Lowry (drums) - follows 2020's As Long As You Are. People Who Aren't There Anymore heralds a new chapter for Future Islands, who continue to challenge themselves and each other despite having formed nearly two decades ago. Where they've pursued ever-higher energy anthems in the past, they've turned inward this time and unlocked a new level of ferocity, delivering some of their most inspiring and most heart-breaking tracks by doing the opposite: taking their time, making each breath, each syllable, each cymbal crash count. The result is a powerful, defining statement from a group of musicians who have made the best album of their career. In this interview, Samual T Herring talks about the writing and recording of the album, that excellent Letterman performance, navigating loss and resilience and lots more. Kennebec - Tall Tales (feat. Hemlock Ernst and Sudan Archives) from the 2022 album Without Star or Compass on Night Time Stories. While Eric Phillips has only been releasing cinematic instrumental soundscapes under the name Kennebec since 2020, his enchanting works have garnered attention and led to a number of incredible collaborations. Our Song of the Day, “Tall Tales,” sees the Portland-based artist team up with Samuel T. Herring of Future Islands under his rap moniker Hemlock Ernst and Brittany Denise Parks, better known as the LA-based musician Sudan Archives. The early single off his sophomore record Without Star or Compass is one of three tracks on the album that Herring contributes to but the only one under his rap alias. Over a guitar-strummed hook, Herring and Parks swap stream-of-consciousness verses and come together for heavenly harmonies on the chorus. While the lyrics are esoteric, ripe with references to nature, the seeming meaning revolves around our inability to fully know what another is thinking or feeling. Phillips had this to say about working with Herring: “I think our styles just resonated well with one another, and we clicked naturally. We sent some ideas back and forth remotely and then he flew out to Portland and we recorded all the vocals in three days together. It was so fun and inspiring – and really deepened my appreciation for his craft. He's such a nice guy and a total genius. Sam's lyrics really hit a beautiful balance between that sense of magic and folklore in the natural world that I'm after, while really bringing his own sense of narrative. He's really amazing at constructing lyrical concepts in a way that I think compliments my own strengths (and weaknesses).” Watch Future Islands' Live on KEXP at Home performance from 2020 and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

By Roger CormierIt's getting autumn-y. The weather is cooler, our pumpkin spice lattes more justified. Fall happens to be my favorite season. The temp is juuuust right, and baseball playoffs, baby. An entire region of the U.S. (New England) is dedicated to it. What's not to love? Whenever I hear the phrase “seasons change” — and there is a contemporary commercial for I think Home Depot that plays constantly that says it — there is a specific song that comes to mind, and to me it has an autumn feel. The song of (the) fall is “Seasons (Waiting on You)” by Future Islands. Specifically, their March 2014 performance of it on Letterman. People change, Samuel T. Herring sings. People do in fact change in late September, October, November from what they were in the summertime. Choked of the freedom to be anything other than the thing, things get more…intense. It's the postseason. It all comes down to this. When people change, they gain a piece but they lose one too. You build yourself a wall for protection, but the heart is further away. That ain't no good. We need someone to lead us during this time. Someone to symbolize our potential best self during this season. A recent meme reminds us of the time George Costanza shifted to soup mode. Yes, we eat soup during the cooler months, but we can improve upon this. Besides, we don't want to have a George Costanza Autumn (or Winter or Spring or Summer). We can eat food from a different continent, like, say, South America. It's time to shift into a different kind of mode.Fogo de Chão is a Brazilian restaurant chain. Steak, chicken, lamb, pork, seafood… you name it, they got it if it's served in Southern Brazil. It's nearing September 20. Fogo mode. The thing that to some seems like a coincidence but really isn't is the following two things:Eduardo Escobar really, really loves Fogo de Chão. Eduardo Escobar is on fire right nowOh there were doubters — you get those when you barely hit over .200 for five months. But Eduardo, as Keith Hernandez reminds you all the time, is a veteran. He knows what time it is. It's Fogo Time. It's time to kick ass. Escobar is more than a Fogo lover. His catchphrase is “Proud of you man.” At least two teams have lovingly teased him about this. It's so wholesome. He also appreciates the aesthetic quality of teammates' home runs.Eduardo also possesses a howitzer for a right arm. I pledged long ago to never take bullets from an infielder to a first baseman for granted. I kept this promise to myself. Anyway, it's time. It's autumn. Hit for the cycle, like Eduardo did. Be something to be proud of. Face the intensity of the fall with your heart open, like Eduardo does. Be your best while keeping cool, while keeping the passion. Don't hibernate; elevate. Time to go Fogo Mode. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe

This week's show covers new music from Tame Impala, Oslo's Mall Girl, the team of VANO 3000, BADBADNOTGOOD, and Samuel T. Herring. Next, a new song from the English troubadour Richard Dawson from a new album he made with backing from the Norwegian experimental rock band Circle backing him up. For the archive pick this week, Mark selects “Soon” from My Bloody Valentine's landmark 1991 album, Loveless--a searing blaze of overdriven guitars and more than a little influence from the British dance music of the rave era. It's a blurry gem of a tune! Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link. This is Unsung – a Crack Magazine podcast on Sonos Radio where the world's greatest artists reveal their heroes who never caught the spotlight.Today, Samuel T. Herring of Future Islands speaks with writer and musician Stephanie Phillips about Mark Sandman, the famously elusive frontman of the 1990s Massachusetts punk/blues/rock band Morphine. While they built a loyal following and received critical acclaim in their day, Morphine never broke through to mainstream audiences. Samuel explores making it as an older musician, songs that can be a cure for pain and how much one should reveal of themselves through writing.Songs referenced:Morphine: Swing It LowMorphine: Wishing WellMorphine: Cure For PainMorphine: All My WayFuture Islands: Beach FoamMorphine: The NightMorphine: Souvenir Hosted on Acast. Future Islands frontman Samuel T. Herring joins the show this week to share how he fell into the very dangerous and very common cycle of depression and addiction. Herring explains how this struggle has led to suicidal thoughts, a dependency on cocaine, and self-isolation, all of which has led to further depression and disconnection. The As Long As You Are vocalist and songwriter states how he was able to explore his deepest and most frightening emotions by allowing himself to “touch the bottom” of his darkness. This, in turn, led him to accept his own negative feelings, helped him connect with people, and also express his love for others as part of his ongoing recovery. Presented by Consequence of Sound and Sound Mind Live, Going There with Dr. Mike is a new interview podcast series in which clinical psychologist and life coach Dr. Mike Friedman talks with musicians about the crossroads where music and mental health meet.

Es heißt „As Long As You Are“.
You might think that Chicago rapper Vic Mensa and Samuel Herring, the frontman of Baltimore synth-pop band Future Islands, don't have much in common. But you'd be wrong. And it's not because Mensa used to rap in a rock band and Herring has been a hip-hop fan since he was a kid. And it's not because Mensa is a fan of the Beatles and Nirvana, and Herring is about to drop a hip-hop EP he recorded with Stones Throw producer Madlib. No, it's because Mensa and Herring are both musicians and they enjoy each other's work. So these guys, who had never met before, hit it off right away when they sat down at the Talkhouse Music microphones backstage at the 2015 Pitchfork Music Festival. In less than 30 minutes, they cover a whole lot of ground: their previous lives as shoplifters, music biz economics, compromising your youthful ideals, going to church, the ghettoes of Baltimore, the U.S. legal system and their mutual disappointment with the Obama presidency. And Herring even reveals the inspiration for his trademark sidestepping dance move!
