This week, in what is normally the interview segment of Vatican Insider, I offer a special report on the recently completed, 3-year-long Synod on Synodality in which I present what several U.S. prelates attending the synod had to say about that experience from pieces they wrote, press conferences they spoke at, or interviews they gave to the media. This and much more in today's edition of Vatican Insider.

After spending nearly a month in Rome, Bishop Barron has just returned from the concluding session of the Synod on Synodality. However, numerous basic questions remain among the faithful: What challenges were discussed during this synod and what solutions, if any, did the attendees reach? On this weeks podcast C&SI team welcome back Julieann Moran, General Secretary for the Synodal Pathway of the Catholic Church in Ireland. Julieann shares her thoughts with us on the experience of the Church's Synodal journey following on the conclusion of part two of the Synod on Synodality in Rome and the publication of the final document which Pope Francis immediately approved.Julieann's return to the podcast this week takes us through the updates from Rome from the Synod of Bishops which has been looking at the issue of Synodality over the last two Octobers. Zac, Ashley and Sebastian are back in Rome to cover the second and final session of the Synod on Synodality, and who better to talk to about what to expect this month than Gerard O'Connell? America's Vatican correspondent and co-host of the “Inside the Vatican” podcast, Gerry has covered every synod since 1985. Last year, the Jesuitical team spoke to Gerry about his career and why he considers this synod to be the most significant event in the life of the church since Vatican II. (Listen here!) This year, Zac, Ashley and Sebastian bring their burning questions (and maybe a little synod skepticism) to Gerry for answers and analysis. They ask: - Was it a mistake to relegate some of the “hot button” issues from last year's synod to outside study groups? - If most of the “hot button” issues are off the table, what are synod delegates going to discuss this year? - What does it mean for the synod to “work”? The team also gives a rundown of what's happened at the synod so far: a two-day retreat for delegates, an unusual penitential service and the opening Mass, celebrated by Pope Francis. Our Synod content is brought to you in part by the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University. On this week's episode of “Jesuitical,” Ashley and Zac share a “conversation in the Spirit” with Linda Staudt, a lay delegate from Canada who was selected to participate in the 2023 and 2024 Synod of Bishops for her extensive work in Catholic education and her involvement at the local, provincial, and national levels of the Canadian church. With her wealth of knowledge and experience, Linda has become a tireless evangelist for synodal listening at the grassroots level. They discuss: - Linda's experience of being selected as one of seven lay delegates to the Synod on Synodality from North America, and her initial reaction to being chosen. - The synodal process of listening, reflection, and discernment, and how it differs from traditional parliamentary-style meetings for its ability to reach and include the voices of those on the margins of the church. - Linda's advice for parishioners and clergy who are frustrated by a lack of synodal engagement in their diocese or parish. Bishop Barron has some concerns with the Synod on Synodality. In November, Bishop Barron wrote an article published at Word on Fire titled, "My Experience of the Synod." Father Pine Explains what the Synod on Synodality means based on what we as Catholics know and believe about the Church, Her Responsibilities, and Christ.
Managing Editor of Catholic Family News Matt Gaspers is warning about the inherent dangers of the Synod on Synodality, explaining how Pope Francis' Synodal process looks like a pretext to bring about a 'false church' with false teachings. Although the recently released report from the Synod on Synodality shows no definitive changes to Catholic Church doctrine, Gaspers argues that the Catholic faithful must prepare like Noah for dire times in the Church and the world. A false church carries with it a new morality that will challenge the time-tested beliefs of all faithful Catholics. Tune into this episode now to learn the latest on the hazards of Pope Francis' Synod on Synodality and how adherents to Christ and His truth can prepare for the worst—a false Catholic Church that will shock the world to its core. At the Synod on Synodality's Roman meetings, lay men and women have both been included for the first time as full, voting members. But, argues the Rev. Louis Cameli, if this synod is not to be a “parliament,” as Pope Francis often warns, perhaps there should be no voting in the synod at all. Father Cameli, who is Cardinal Blase Cupich's Delegate for Formation and Mission and a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, joins veteran Vatican correspondent Gerard O'Connell and host Colleen Dulle for a conversation on voting at the synod.
