The boys drink and review "I Just Crush A Lot" a blueberry hibiscus tart ale from Calvert Brewing. In 1054, a dramatic split forever changed the face of Christianity. Known as the Great Schism, it divided the Church into Roman Catholicism in the West and Eastern Orthodoxy in the East. But the break didn't happen overnight—it was centuries in the making. In this video, we'll explore:* The immediate crisis: papal legates and Patriarch Michael Cerularius trading excommunications.* Political and cultural tensions: Rome vs. Constantinople, Latin vs. Greek, and the rise of Islam.* Authority disputes: papal supremacy in the West vs. conciliar authority in the East.* Theological differences: the Filioque controversy, Monophysitism, and contrasting spiritual emphases.* Divergent practices: from unleavened vs. leavened bread, to clerical celibacy and fasting rules.* The aftermath: how the Crusades, especially the sack of Constantinople, deepened the divide. The Schism was not just about doctrine—it was about culture, politics, and identity. Understanding it helps explain why the Christian world looks the way it does today.#GreatSchism #1054 #ChristianHistory #Catholic #Orthodox #ChurchHistory #Byzantine #Rome

I really only know about the BIble." -Why do Catholics believe in the Filioque and Orthodox Christians do not? -Jesus says the possibility of rich people going to heaven is slim. Does that prove that works matter as well as faith? How would someone rich make it right with God? Where does the line cross? and many more.

Dr. Jenkins continues his discussion of the schism between the Orthodox and Latins, focusing this week on Anselm of Bec and Canterbury and his treatise on the Holy Spirit, and how this became the basis for so much of later Latin theology on the subject. A discussion of the scriptural argument in favor of the Filioque Clause of the Nicean Creed.
Pastor David Jay Webber of Bethany Lutheran-Princeton, MN Pr. Webber's Series on Eastern Orthodoxy The post The Lutheran-Orthodox “Common Statement on the Filioque” Adopted by Evangelical Lutheran Church of America – Pr. David Jay Webber, 8/4/25 (2163) first appeared on Issues, Etc..
The Filioque argument of 1054ad, between the Catholic and Orthodox churches, the controversy of “whether the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father, or the Father and the Son”, the filioque is “and the Son”. Catholicism says yes the Spirit proceeds from the Father and Son, but the Orthodox deny and call it false teaching that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Son.What I want to do here is step into this argument with a 3rd angle, and use Scripture alone to see how to answer this question. Because both Catholicism and Orthodoxy reject Scripture as authority, so I want to use Scripture alone and see whether or not this nigh thousand year old question of the Filioque can be settled.Message by Pastor Mat - July 27, 2025 Apologetics, Debate, Bible Discussions, Evangelism, and much moreTo know more on how to be saved, what are the requirements and such, please see our playlist on the Gospel and Eternal Security (assurance of salvation) - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3pJdCnnwrEeCQOCTTmDW1GjUYxpd44DG&si=_rT-lThl0klHt5Cd A Bible study on personal works and fruit bearing -"The mystic fruit bowl" Mark 7:5-23 - https://youtu.be/kw7QiLQMQ_M?si=eSOYcF1Ffco6-inI (Discussing discipleship) Bible study on Luke 9:60-62 "Let the dead bury the dead" - https://www.youtube.com/live/BkWtkOrEs-Q?si=y-zyqNGfWi3kzVu2 Our Ministries Website - https://christiancoffeetime.ca/ 1John 5:20) "And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. In this episode of Ask the Church, we unpack one of the most debated lines in the Nicene Creed: “who proceeds from the Father and the Son.” Why did the Western Church add “and the Son”? Why do Eastern Christians omit it? And what does it tell us about the dynamic life of the Trinity? In the next five minutes, we'll discuss: - The biblical basis for the Spirit's procession (John 15:26)- How the concepts of “eternal source,” “eternal begetting,” and “eternal procession” help us understand the three Persons of the Trinity- The history and impact of the Filioque controversy and the Great Schism- Anglican flexibility in confessing or omitting the “and the Son” (Filioque) clause
Dr. Jenkins continues his discussion on the history of the Filioque by looking at the responses of the Latin west to the accusation leveled against it by St. Photios. What emerges are two responses, with one marking the future of Western theology, and the other a road pointed to by St. Maximos the Confessor, but untraveled. https://tinyurl.com/Doxamoot2025 https://tinyurl.com/OrthEd2025

Continuing his discussion of the schism, and the filioque's contribution to it, Dr. Jenkins this week looks at St. Maximos the Confessor (580-662). St. Maximos shows that in the 640s the Latins did not confess what would later be their doctrine, that the Spirit's person eternally procedes from the Son as He does also from the Father. https://tinyurl.com/Doxamoot2025 https://tinyurl.com/OrthEd2025 Byzantine course: https://tinyurl.com/LuxchristiByzantium Still Points: https://tinyurl.com/StillPoints Next issue of Rule of Faith: https://tinyurl.com/RuleofFaith6-1

The Catechism introduces us to the Holy Spirit and describes how the Spirit reveals the Father and the Son to us. It also gives us some background and context regarding the way we describe the Holy Spirit in the Roman Catholic Church compared to the way that the Eastern Orthodox Church describes the Holy Spirit. Fr. Mike breaks it down for us and gives us some hope for a future reconciliation between Eastern and Western Churches. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 243-248. Dr. Letham also addresses contemporary theological debates, including the filioque controversy, Pentecostalism, and modern Spirit Christologies, while maintaining a firm grounding in classical Reformed orthodoxy. Whether you're a theologian, pastor, or layperson, this conversation will deepen your understanding of the Spirit's transformative work in the life of the church and individual believers. Join us as we explore this rich and vital topic. Robert Letham is the author of several influential works, including The Holy Trinity: In Scripture, History, Theology, and Worship and his acclaimed Systematic Theology. Send us a textSeries: Mystical TheologyEpisode 31: Three Basic Mistakes, Augustine of Hippo on the Holy Trinity, Episode 31, Mystical Theology, Dr. C. VeniaminBased on St. Augustine's De Fide et Symbolo, this presentation discusses three erroneous presuppositions made by the Bishop of Hippo, and perpetuated by his followers, which have influenced subsequent generations in the Franco-Latin Christianity of the West. These assumptions, discerned by Fr. John Romanides, one of the foremost Orthodox theologians of our times, may be found in his lecture, “The Filioque” (see details below). In this talk I dive into an overview of the Enneads of Plotinus. We consider its similarity with the rest of so-called ‘perennial philosophy' and how this doctrine is not compatible with biblical theology and why Augustine was influenced by it in his filioquism. (40:50) Break 2 (44:32) What is the baptism mentioned in the Creed. What does the resurrection of the dead mean?
Can the Synod on Synodality Reinvent the Catholic Faith? Michael Lofton covers the comments of an Australian archbishop on this topic. He also addresses Pope Francis’ general audience on the Filioque and considers Todd White’s leg lengthening “miracle”.
Questions Covered: 02:34 – I don’t understand the Charismatic movement and the speaking of tongues. Is 1 Cor. 14:2 the tongues that they are speaking of? 13:44 – Can you clarify particular judgment and final judgment? Who will know what? 20:32 – Where can I find in the Early Church Fathers the teaching of Papal Supremacy? 30:47 – What are the Catholic arguments for adding the Filioque into the creed? 36:50 – Is excessive anger sinful? 43:01 – I’m considering RCIA. I'm reading Deadly Indifference by Eric Sammons. He says that contraception is immoral but at the parish level they are indifferent about it. What’s the response to this? 50:32 – Hypothetically, what would happen if a pope taught something ex cathedra that everybody knew was objectively against Catholic teaching? …
Questions Covered: 06:15 – Why is the Filioque such a big deal? 11:24 – Was Mohammeds spiritual encounter authentic, and if it was, was it angelic or some other nefarious being? 14:10 – I was raised Pentecostal. I think I understand the Marian dogmas, but it feels weird, and it feels like worship. What are the requirements? …
Questions Covered: 06:09 – Why should we care about the Filioque? 15:38 – What is the Kingdom of God mentioned in the bible? 20:43 – How do we make sense of freewill when we die? 29:24 – Where does Limbo and purgatory fall especially when looking at the time before Jesus? 43:05 – How authentic is the Letter of Pilate to Tiberius? 51:06 – . Julie… Rochester, MN… I’m a cradle Catholic and I have a two-part question about baptism: I’ve had relatives who wished to have their children baptized by a priest, but the priest denied them because of their living situations and lack of practicing their faith themselves. I understand that any Christian baptism is valid as long as proper form is used, so these relatives likely could have gone to another Christian church and had their children baptized and it would have been seen as valid by the Catholic Church. So what is the reasoning for just not baptizing the children in the Catholic Church as requested, when other baptisms would be considered equally valid? It seems that the other Christian churches are more willing to offer the grace to the innocent child. Also, in the Catholic Church, holy water is used for baptism. This is not available in other Christian churches, and often not available in emergency situations either, so I’m having difficulty seeing those baptisms as equally valid. …
Questions Covered: 08:16 – In order to become a sacristan, does one also have to be an extraordinary minister on holy communion? 12:30 – After the final judgment, will there be procreation? 17:56 – How can I gain enough knowledge to defend the Filioque and the papacy from the Orthodox? 20:49 – Can you elaborate on the differences between praying to Mary and the saints and contacting the dead? 37:08 – How can we not conclude that Genesis 3:18-19 would you support human composting? 44:03 – How do you know when you are truly repented of a sin rather than just being afraid of hell? …
