Ok, Ok, enough short stories for now. Let's dive into a book that was SUPER popular for its time, and one that honestly, I'm shocked had its popularity killed by the botched disney adaptation. I mean, for context, Edgar Rice Borroughs' other major work, Tarzan, is EASILY recognizable and often parodied (I mean, look at how often the stereotypical "Yell while swinging on a vine" trope is used!), and yet, I was genuinely surprised by most of the twists and turns in this one! Sure, there's some stuff in here that I'd recognize as a trope, but only because I'm a huge sucker for sword and planet type fiction that inhabits the same genre! Just bonkers. Anyway, I've been all out of sorts on scheduling lately, and for that, I apologize! Introducing some short form video to the pipeline has me all bent out of shape, and I'm only just now picking up the slack. Hey, at least I remembered to get the episodes out, though!  Want to read along with us? We travel farther into the wild world of the red planet, led on and on and on by our dear protagonist, John Carter, who definitely is NOT a Mary Sue and you SHOULDN'T flame Borroughs on AO3 about it, no way. I goof, but seriously, this is a fantastic example of how a wildly overpowered main character simply needs to be written carefully to make for engaging storytelling. I mean, the guy teaches himself TELEPATHY and I'm still interested in just how things will shake out despite how buckwild that is, that has to tell you something about either how solid this story is, or just how awful my taste has become over the years trawling through the public domain. Oh also, there are 10 whole books in this series, let alone the small handful of short stories after it, so if you're interested in hearing more tales of Barsoom, make your voice heard!   Want to read along with us? This is the complete first book of theMars Series, Book 1, The Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. This is a LibriVox public domain recording. John Carter, an American Civil War veteran, goes prospecting in Arizona and, when set upon by Indians, is mysteriously transported to Mars, called "Barsoom" by its inhabitants. Carter finds that he has great strength on this planet, due to its lesser gravity. Carter soon falls in among the Tharks, a nomadic tribe of the planet's warlike, four-armed, green inhabitants. Thanks to his strength and combat abilities he rises in position in the tribe and earns the respect eventually the friendship of Tars Tarkas, one of the Thark chiefs. The Tharks subsequently capture Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, a member of the humanoid red Martian race. The red Martians inhabit a loose network of city states and control the desert planet's canals, along which its agriculture is concentrated. Carter rescues her from the green men to return her to her people. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/colin-holbrook/support

This week's movie was doomed before it was ever released. Not necessarily because of its subject matter, plot, or execution, but rather because a big film studio somehow lost its nerve and led this fun movie to become one of the worst box office bombs of the last two decades. John Carter is rated PG-13 and was released on February 22, 2012 The movie features Taylor Kitsch as John Carter, Lynn Collins as Deja's Thoris, Willem Defoe as Tars Tarkas, and Mark Strong as Matai Shang. When Tommy Burke took me out to Gundark Island to see the alien, I wasn't really expecting much. Maybe I was just going because I thought it would be cool to take a ride in Tommy's canoe. Or maybe I was just hoping Tommy might turn out to be a friend. If there really was an alien there, too, then all the better. After passing a hand-painted sign that said “Please Don't Feed the Alien,” we came to a clearing in the middle of the island where I saw a lump in the ground. At first it looked like a small boulder, except that it had a grayish-purple tint to it. Upon closer inspection it vaguely appeared to have scales. | Copyright 2019 by Matthew Corradi. VOTE MAJOR SPOILERS DISCUSSION Preacher Vol. 1 Here’s a book guaranteed to offend a bunch of people, not only because of its profuse profanity and graphic violence, but because it’s the epitome of iconoclasm. Like a brutal accident, you can’t watch but you can’t turn away. The story follows an ex-preacher man, Jesse, who has become disgusted with God’s abandoning of His responsibilities. So Jesse starts off into the wilds of Texas with his hitman girlfriend and new best friend (a vampire) to find God so that he can give Him a piece of his mind. Despite its superficial perversity, this book contains what may be the most moral character in mainstream comics. A cult hit in the making. Fans of Quentin Tarantino take note.
