This week, we review the third film in the whodunnit series of Benoit Blanc mysteries: Wake Up Dead Man. After Knives Out and Glass Onion, director Rian Johnson returns to the reins of his favorite genre. We discuss the franchise's increasingly charismatic roster of secondary protagonists, the year of Josh O'Connor, and whether or not Johnson's penchant for heavy-handed topicality once again derails a Benoit Blanc tale.

Life is full of sweet highs and terrible merlots on today's Script Apart as Alexander Payne – director of movies like Election, The Holdovers, Nebraska and About Schmidt – joins us to raise a glass to an indie drama that has aged like a fine wine. The brilliant Sideways was released in 2004 and soon earned four Academy Award nominations, taking home Best Adapted Screenplay. It won six Independent Spirit Awards, was picked up for Japanese remake and instigated a huge tourism boom in the California wine country that forms the film's backdrop. Co-written with frequent collaborator Jim Taylor, it told the tale of two friends on a wine tasting expedition, each struggling to break out of a certain middle-aged, middle-class male malaise (one of Alexander's screenwriting specialties). The result? A dramedy widely regarded as one of the best of its decade. The film saw Paul Giamatti play Miles – an aspiring author whose dreams of literary stardom are misfiring, much like his love life. Recently divorced, he and his old college friend Jack, played by Thomas Haden Church, hop in the car to celebrate Jack's upcoming wedding. But Jack – a washed-up soap opera actor – is intent on hooking up with women as part of one last sexual hurrah before marriage. Caught up in the mix as the pair quarrel and cause trouble is Virginia Madsen's Maya, a barmaid that Miles strikes up feelings for. Professing those feelings in a serious way, though, is difficult for the wine aficionado and English teacher – a man so mired in regret about what was, he's unable to grasp the now and what could still be. Much is often made about the recurring quote-unquote “losers” that lead Alexander's films, and what they might have to say about modern American man. The filmmaker, though, has always been pretty resolute that his movies centre the downtrodden and dopey simply because, deep down, these films are comedies – a genre the historically sides with the little guy, going all the way back to Charlie Chaplin. But how does he define the mix of pathos and hilarity that fill his characters? Where does Alexander's affinity towards road trip stories come from? What's so relatable and real about Miles' fear that his literary dreams might amount to nothing – and that a life of feeling like a loser awaits? And what was the inspiration behind the film's beautiful ending – a knock at the door that we as an audience never see answered? All is revealed across a fascinating thirty-minute sit down with the auteuer.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Demon Knight is a 1995 supernatural horror film that serves as the first feature-length movie based on the popular HBO anthology series Tales from the Crypt. Directed by Ernest R. Dickerson and co-produced by Universal Pictures, the film combines elements of horror, action, and dark humor, remaining true to the series' macabre tone. Plot Summary The story follows a mysterious drifter named Brayker (played by William Sadler) who possesses a powerful artifact: a key-shaped relic filled with the blood of Christ. This key is the last of seven mystical keys that can unlock cosmic chaos if it falls into the wrong hands. Brayker seeks refuge in a rundown boarding house in a remote desert town, where he is pursued by the sinister Collector (played by Billy Zane), a demonic entity determined to claim the key. As the Collector lays siege to the boarding house, he tempts the occupants with promises of their deepest desires, trying to corrupt their souls. Brayker and the residents must work together to resist his temptations and survive the night. Key Cast • Billy Zane as The Collector: A charismatic and malevolent demon. • William Sadler as Brayker: A mysterious guardian of the key. • Jada Pinkett (now Jada Pinkett Smith) as Jeryline: A tough young woman who becomes a central figure in the fight against evil. • Thomas Haden Church as Roach: A selfish resident who makes a deal with the Collector. • CCH Pounder as Irene: The no-nonsense owner of the boarding house. Themes and Style The film blends horror with a heavy dose of dark humor, a hallmark of Tales from the Crypt. It explores themes of temptation, redemption, and the fight between good and evil. The practical effects, creature design, and gore are highlights, making it a cult favorite among horror fans. Reception Upon release, Demon Knight received mixed reviews. Critics praised Billy Zane's over-the-top performance and the film's fun, campy tone but criticized its thin plot and reliance on genre clichés. Over the years, it has gained a cult following for its unique blend of horror and comedy. Legacy Demon Knight was followed by another Tales from the Crypt movie, Bordello of Blood (1996), though the sequel was less well-received. Despite its flaws, Demon Knight is often celebrated as a quintessential 1990s horror flick and a standout entry in the Tales from the Cryptfranchise.
We're toasting the twentieth anniversary of a film about wine, friendship, and love among the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley, California. Directed by Alexander Payne and based on the novel by Rex Pickett, this 2004 hangout/road comedy from Fox Searchlight became a critic's darling, sweeping the “Big Four” critics' awards and winning the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, WGA, and Critic's Choice awards for Payne and co-writer Jim Taylor. The movie also marked breakthrough performances for its entire lead cast: Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, and Sandra Oh. The corky, uh, quirky comedy even affected wine sales, causing a spike in pinot noir sales and a dip in merlot sales. But will praise of this film die on the vine with our three hosts, or will we find that it goes down easy despite its vintage? Join us as we give you the straight story on Sideways! From a great well-known cast of faces, such as William Sadler, Jada Pinkett, Billy Zane, Dick Miller and Thomas Haden Church to some genuinely spooky great practical effects and world building, Demon Knight really delivers in a way most low-budget horror movies don't.Not to mention, it's probably the only horror movie where a black woman is the final girl, and she saves the world!I never thought I'd say that Billy Zane was the best part of anything.... he chews the scenery like never before or again as The Collector. Maybe he's entranced me into doing this episode? Maybe I'm possessed? What is this green goo?!Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. The Movie Madness Podcast is celebrating its 500th episode with a conversation 20 years in the making. Erik Childress has had many conversations with his guest over the years, but this one is a look back at where Nick Digilio and him were in their lives in 2004 when they, respectively, named Sideways and Garden State as their favorite films of that year. They talk about why those films were so personal to them, almost exactly ten years apart in their respective ages, at the time and if revisiting them two decades later is the same experience. The conversation veers into personal struggles, “manic pixie dream girls”, lost opportunities and soundtracks.

It's been a minute, but Distorted Minds is finally back with an all-new movie talk episode! Drew's pick this week is the 2015 crime/comedy movie Dope, from director Rick Famuyiwa. It's about a group of high school kids who accidentally end up with a big bag of drugs and are forced to sell them. Kevin's choice this time is Alexander Payne's 2004 dramedy film, Sideways. It stars Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church as a couple of friends who go out to wine country before one of them gets married. Big thanks to anyone who's still tuning in, we love you and have a great week! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/distortedminds/support
For this week's second podcast review, Josh Parham & Giovanni Lago, and I are reviewing the latest film from Academy Award-winner Kevin Costner, "Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1," starring Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, Jamie Campbell Bower & Thomas Haden Church. After having its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the first part of Costner's epic western (which will stretch across four separate films) has been met with mixed reviews, some calling it a classic throwback to the great westerns we rarely see get made anymore and others saying it doesn't work as a standalone film. Does it belong on television or in the theater? What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss this, plus the film's theme, its magnificent score, the performances from the massive ensemble, whether or not it has awards potential, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. We get hot and heavy with part 1 of our "SEX EDUCATION WITH EMILY/EMMA STONE" double-feature!EMILY STONE (she prefers we call her that rather than EMMA, and she asked nice!) stars in this teen comedy with wit and stars-a-plenty. When a little white lie has the whole school thinking quiet girl-next-door Olive is a prostitute, Olive takes a stand against the double standard. However, when the pressure of the Scarlet Letter effect (see, we read!) becomes too much to take, Olive needs her friends, family, and maybe even high-school evangelical Marianne (AMANDA BYNES in her last film role) to help her! Also, it's got THOMAS HADEN CHURCH, LISA KUDROW, PENN BADGLEY, DAN BYRD, MALCOM McDOWELL, and freaking more!So put on your corset and listen to us talk teens, sex, and comedy in part 1 of "SEX EDUCATION WITH EMILY STONE!"Listen: Wherever you get your podcasts & at cultandclassicfilms.com/Watch: youtube.com/@CULTANDCLASSICFILMS/Subscribe at patreon.com/cultandclassicfilms for EXCLUSIVE cult movies sent to you every month!Buy exclusive films at cultandclassicfilms.com/Host: Nate WyckoffPanelist: Amanda Longley#EASYA #EMMASTONE #EMILYSTONE #POORTHINGS #TEENCOMEDY #AMANDABYNES #CULTANDCLASSICFILMS #movie #film #cultmovies #cultfilms
