We continue with series 5 from Librivox's Short Science Fiction Collection! This week: "The Untouchable" by Stephen A. Kallis, Jr.!
A series of 16 influential political pamphlets published between 1776 and 1783 during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) titled The American Crisis, or simply The Crisis, by eighteenth-century Enlightenment philosopher and author Thomas Paine — an Englishman living in the colonies who signed his essays anonymously as "Common Sense," the title of his earlier influential work. Each essay, bolstered the morale of the American colonists to fight hard for their independence, appealed to the English to support the colonist's cause, clarified the issues at stake, and denounced any type of negotiated peace. The essays were gathered into one volume in 1882, showcasing the iconic opening line: "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." We continue with series 5 from Librivox's Short Science Fiction Collection! This week: "Quiet, Please" by Kevin Scott!
This is the story of Buck, dog napped from sunny California to snowy Arctic during the Alaska gold rush. This deservedly famous book has been already recorded by LibriVox and downloaded more than 100,000 times. Why, then, would anyone suggest another recording? Because this will be a Solo recording. One of the joys of LibriVox is also a source of frustration for some listeners. That is, getting used to a narrator just in time for it to change! So, with apologies to Gordon, Kristin, Jean, and Miette, I am doing a solo. (Introduction by Tom Crawford)Please be aware this book contains graphic descriptions of unspeakable animal cruelty and violence.Genre(s): Action & Adventure Fiction, Nature & Animal FictionLanguage: EnglishKeyword(s): fiction (1613), dogs (56), Alaska (44), wolves (8)

Pocahontas became a MOTHER, when she married English planter John Rolfe in 1614 and gave birth ten months later to their son, Thomas Rolfe, in January 1615. Thomas Rolfe, who survived into adulthood and had his own descendants, lived in England and later returned to Virginia. Pocahontas took her son with her when she traveled to England in 1616, where she was introduced to high society. Shortly before returning to Virginia, Pocahontas died in 1617 of a suspected illness at age 22, leaving Thomas in England with his uncle before he later went to live in Virginia. While some oral histories suggest she may also have had a child named Ka-Okee with her first husband, Kocoum, this is not documented in mainstream historical records, which focus on her son with Rolfe. Her marriage and son were seen at the time as a symbol of the "peace" between the English settlers and the Powhatan people, and her name at baptism, Rebecca, was interpreted by some as "mother of two peoples". In 1608, Pocahontas (1596–1617) befriended the daring English explorer and adventurer John Smith (1580–1631) and later converted to Christianity. Her story has been romanticized over the years, many aspects of which are fictional, with the most famous being the many celebrated stories told about her and John Smith. Elizabethan ‘Sea Dog’ Sir Richard Grenville (1542-91) was Walter Raleigh’s cousin and an English privateers who was authorised by Queen Elizabeth I to raid England's enemies, even during times of peace. Carrying letters of marque issued by the English Crown, the Sea Dogs frequently attacked both enemy shipping at sea and enemy outposts on land... frequently targeting the Spanish in North American waters and ports. This week, we're doing something a little different on Ron's Amazing Stories. Ron heads back into the archives, dusting off some classic segments from past episodes and bringing them together for a special throwback edition of the show. If you've been listening for a while, you'll recognize a few familiar favorites—but there are also a few surprises waiting along the way. From vintage science fiction readings to classic radio mysteries and a thought-provoking tale from Ray Bradbury, this episode is a fun mix of old and new… with just a bit of tampering. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a journey through the golden age of storytelling—Ron style. In This Episode As Read By - A return to a fan-favorite segment inspired by Librivox, featuring "Gib Takes a Space Test" from a 1957 science fiction collection—where imagination leads the way and the future is anyone's guess. Five Minute Mystery - A classic 1940s mini-mystery, complete with Ron's signature humorous interruptions and a sponsor you probably weren't expecting. Main Feature – X Minus One: "The Veldt" - A chilling adaptation of a Ray Bradbury story about a fully automated nursery where imagination—and technology—may go too far. Story Thoughts - A look at Bradbury's themes of technology, parenting, and whether our modern conveniences are helping us… or quietly taking control. A Moment in Time - A nostalgic radio clip from the past, with insight into why it mattered then—and why it still does today.
