Blake tries to talk Jeb off the ledge as we return to the classic theme of "ancient astronauts" in this throwback episode titled: Earth Visitors. Research suggests humans grow more neurons than did Neanderthals. A bunch of this episode comes from the work of Maurice Chatelain, who we shall refer to as "Shadowlane." His book Our Cosmic Ancestors sports one of the more interesting book covers we've seen while researching this show. He also wrote Our Ancestors Came from Outer Space. Maurice Chatelain's credentials appear to have been somewhat overstated in the episode. We'll be talking about several "Out of Place Artifacts" or OOPAs in this episode. Let's start with the "Boot Print" aka The Meister Print. (pictured below) See also this article by Glenn Kuban. Very compelling stuff. I guess. I mean it sort of looks like show print. This interesting looking skull also sent us down some research holes. The text of the episode seems to be talking about the Del Mar Skull but the image doesn't look like a close match. A lot of "shapes on the earth" are discussed. The shapes require you to do a lot of work. We'll get into that in the episode. But one is the Maltese Cross that is absolutely stunning, so long as you ignore that some of the points are hundreds of miles from the alleged anchor points and that the temples allegedly at each point were centuries apart. Skeptical response via CSICOP. Also - this is supposed to be a "pyramid" but seems to be more of what geometry wonks call a "triangle." I'm trying to find the type of terminal behind our statistician. And - behind the scenes I've managed to contact him and he assures me that the episode required many takes and that his students reported they made him sound like he believes in the whole ancient astronauts thing... More on this if I hear back from a rather lengthy email I sent him today (12/13/24). Read even more about the Monte Carlo Method! Vintage ad for the The Outer Space Connection. According to Scientific American, the idea that indigenous Americans were here for a very long time (from across the Bering sea) really kicked off in the 1930s. Welcome to Season 4, Episode 8! Today's conversation is with Amy Chu, a co-founder and former editor of A. Magazine, screenwriter, co-founder of Alpha Girl Comics, and well-known comic book author. Her latest title is Fighting to Belong! Volume 1 (out now, so go get it), which is a graphic novel focused on the history and contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders in America. Published by Third State Books, Fighting to Belong! is co-written with Amy's son, Alexander Chang, and illustrated by Louie Chin. It's a collaborative project with The Asian American Foundation, The Asian American Education Project, and others. The importance of Fighting to Belong! cannot be overstated. Through an engaging story, readers will be entertained, engaged, educated, and empowered. Amy has written a diverse collection of titles that include Poison Ivy, Kiss, Wonder Woman, Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris, and Ant-Man. Two of our favorite works by Amy are the Trot and Cap'n Bill series for teens and Carmilla: The First Vampire graphic novel. Amy is able to weave in diversity and depth to her stories in a way that makes typically underrepresented people (like API) feel seen and heard. In our conversation, we talk about all of these things as well as her journey to comics, the importance of diverse storytelling, the status of Fighting to Belong! Volume 2, what draws her to writing complex characters, and so much more. Whether you like comics, good storytelling, history, or diversity, we highly recommend getting Fighting to Belong! or any of Amy's other work, but especially the Trot and Cap'n Bill series, Carmilla: The First Vampire, and Poison Ivy. You can learn more about Amy through her website and her work with Alpha Girl Comics. She also has signed copies of her work available. "Princess of Mars" is a science fiction novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs and first published in 1912. It is the first book in the Barsoom series and is known for its imaginative portrayal of an alien world, adventure, and romance. Here's an overview and analysis of "Princess of Mars":Plot Summary: The story is set in the late 19th century and centers around the protagonist, John Carter, a former Confederate soldier who finds himself mysteriously transported to the planet Mars, known to its inhabitants as Barsoom. On Barsoom, Carter's Earthly physique gives him superhuman strength and agility due to the lower gravity. He soon becomes embroiled in the planet's conflicts.Carter becomes involved in a complex Martian political landscape. He encounters various alien races, including the Tharks (a four-armed, green-skinned species), and the Red Martians, which includes the titular "Princess of Mars," Dejah Thoris. Carter and Dejah Thoris fall in love, and their relationship is central to the story.Themes:Adventure and Romance: "Princess of Mars" is a classic adventure tale with elements of romance. It combines action, daring exploits, and a passionate love story between John Carter and Dejah Thoris.Sword and Planet: The novel belongs to the subgenre of science fiction known as "Sword and Planet," characterized by stories that feature adventures on other planets with a focus on swashbuckling and swordplay. It often includes interactions between human and alien civilizations.Stranger in a Strange Land: Carter's journey to Mars and his efforts to adapt to a new culture, as well as his efforts to rescue Dejah Thoris, reflect the classic theme of "stranger in a strange land," where the protagonist is thrust into an unfamiliar world and must navigate its challenges.Style: Edgar Rice Burroughs' writing style is straightforward and action-oriented, making it accessible and engaging for readers. He creates a vivid and imaginative world on Mars with unique and diverse cultures and species.Impact: "Princess of Mars" is considered a classic of early 20th-century science fiction and has had a significant influence on the genre. It was one of the earliest works to introduce the concept of an Earthman transported to an alien world and has inspired countless later works, including the space opera genre. The character of John Carter has become an iconic figure in science fiction and popular culture. The Barsoom series, which includes eleven novels, remains popular among fans of classic science fiction and planetary romance. It's worth noting that while the storytelling and imagination in these novels are celebrated, they do reflect the sensibilities of their time, including elements that might be considered dated or problematic by contemporary standards."Princess of Mars" is a captivating and imaginative tale that combines adventure and romance in an otherworldly setting, making it a significant work in the history of science fiction literature.

After the horrendous battle at the end of the previous book, which ended with the destruction of the religion of Issus, John Carter's wife and two other women were locked in a slowly rotating prison attached to the Temple of the Sun, each of whose hundreds of cells are only open to the outside world once every year. In the meantime, Carter's friend Xodar has become the new Jeddak (chief or king) of the black Martian First Born, and those white Martian therns who reject the old religion likewise gain a new unnamed leader, but there are still some who wish to keep the old discredited religion going, including the therns' erstwhite leader, the Holy Hekkador Matai Shang. John Carter discovers that a First Born named Thurid knows the secret of the Temple of the Sun and he and Matai Shang want to rescue the Holy Thern's daughter Phaidor, who has been imprisoned with Dejah Thoris and another Barsoomian princess, Thuvia of Ptarth, in the Temple jail for several hundred days. Unfortunately, Thurid, to spite Carter, gets Matai Shang to also take Dejah Thoris and Thuvia along with them. The Gods of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs audiobook. The Gods of Mars is a 1918 Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the second of his famous Barsoom series. It can be said that the novel set the tone for much science fiction to come. Its influence can clearly be seen in franchises such as Star Trek and Farscape. While Burroughs no doubt borrowed liberally from the pulp fiction of his day, particularly westerns and swashbuckling tales, the pacing and themes set the tone for the soft science fiction genre. The protagonist, John Carter, with his proficiency in hand-to-hand combat and flirtations with beautiful alien women, could be said to have set the mold for later influential icons like Captain James T. Kirk and James Bond. At the end of the first book, A Princess of Mars, John Carter is unwillingly transported back to Earth. The Gods of Mars begins with his arrival back on Barsoom (Mars) after a ten year hiatus, separated from his wife Dejah Thoris, his unborn child, and the Red Martian people of the nation of Helium, whom he has adopted as his own. Unfortunately, John Carter materializes in the one place on Barsoom from which nobody is allowed to depart: the Valley Dor, which is the Barsoomian heaven.

Philosophy at the Movies

What does this 2012 film based on the science fiction of Edgar Rice Burroughs, show us about his ability extrapolate from scientific and historical fact to features of Carter's experiences on Mars, and the races with which he interacts? How do the psychological and moral characteristics of the Thark civilization reflect reptilian life on Earth? How do the Therns, an immortal race, resemble the gods of Greek mythology in their treatment of the other races and civilizations on Mars? Why does the film choose to underplay the complex political motivations of the different Martian races as they try to cope severally and collectively with the scarcity of resources on their dying planet? This feature of the source material, (Burroughs' John Carter of Mars series), is left undeveloped in favor of creating a straightforward adventure film. How does the film parallel Carter's experiences with Apache, and the initial challenges of interacting with an alien culture, the Thark, and his eventual adoption of that culture as his own? How does the film modernize princess Dejah Thoris and Carter himself? Does this work? Why or why not?

This is an audiobook of The Chessmen of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, narrated by Mark Nelson. The Chessmen of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs is the fifth novel in the Barsoom series. It was published as a 6-part serial between February and March of 1922, before being released as a complete novel in the November of the same year. As of 2020, this is the last Barsoom novel in the public domain. Assuming no changes in copyright law, we can expect to see A Fighting Man of Mars, published in 1928, enter the public domain on January 1st, 2024. The heroine of the story is Tara, the daughter of John Carter and Dejah Thoris. Gahan, prince of Gathol, wants her hand in marriage. Tara is against this; she doesn’t see him as a suitable partner, thinking him a dandy. One day, when shes out on her flier, a storm strands her in an unknown area. While Gahan seeks to rescue her, she comes across Kaldanes and Rykors, grotesque creatures that don’t have anything nice planned for Tara. Written as a frame narrative, it begins as the others do with Burroughs (the author) explaining how he came to be in possession of the story in the first place. Unlike the previous three novels, the focus shifts away from John Carter and Dejah Thoris and onto their son, Carthoris, Prince of Helium; and Thuvia, Princess of Ptarth and titular character. Some things never change, though; like with the previous novels, a princess is kidnapped and the traditional male hero needs to rescue her. When he lands on mars, though, he does so in the place that no one can leave: Valley Dor, the Barsoomian afterlife. That’s hardly the type of thing that would stop a man like Carter, though, and he has but a single pervading desire throughout the novel: rescue his wife. [rating:3.5/5] Major Spoilers Poll of the Week You may have heard that Sony Pictures has set up a Ghostbusters production banner called Ghost Corps to capitalize on the fervor/excitement regarding an all female Ghostbusters movie. The idea is to have another movie in production featuring an all-male cast, with Channing Tatum set to produce and possibly star. While many of us are troubled by the boy vs. girl nature of franchise, and even more troubled that the Interwebz seems to be taking sides on who is going to "win", the idea that the original Ghostbusters (Egon, Peter, Ray, and Winston) have franchised their company to others is rather interesting. Which brings us to this week's big question... DISCUSSION: Dr. Scott Robson from Fort Hays State University sits down with Stephen to discuss where communication fails in comics, television, radio, and social media, and how we all need to actively engage with one another.
