Crisis of Meaning, Crisis of Faith Though I've experienced a lot of major accomplishments in my life, I live as if I've not really accomplished anything important or of merit. Though I've finished my PhD, sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, written 13 books, and done lots of other stuff, and, though I've loved a lot and made some really hard choices in the name of love, my inner world, as I experience it, says that I've not amounted to anything. It may sound incredulous, but I feel as if I've not yet accomplished that one thing that will make me say "YES! I DID IT!!"  In the most recent podcasts, I've been encouraging you to be curious enough to ask some really hard questions - essentially - how did you come to be the you that you are in this moment? So, of course, I've been asking myself the same questions and, more importantly, I've been answering them! Sometimes, developing the skill of sleuthing is invaluable in uncovering answers to such questions. Like Sherlock Holmes, one can cultivate the uncanny ability to see value in what seems to be unimportant. In doing so, I've come to solve many mysteries in my life, just by staying in the sleuth mode. It's fun. That is why I love being a Life Coach. I love empowering people to sleuth for themselves so they discover the hidden truths that keep them from having the extraordinary life they dream of. Most of us will experience a crisis of meaning or a crisis of faith at least once in our lives. We know them as a mid-life crisis generally, though they can occur at any time in life. It takes presence of mind, body, heart and spirit to sleuth one's way forward through such a crisis. From my perspective and experience it's imperative for each of us to do that, if we wish to age like a guru. Even if we wish do die in peace it requires some sense of knowing ourselves and what brings joy and meaning to us. Listen in and then share your perspective on my Facebook page! - - - -  For more blogs, books and videos, or if you are interesting in coaching or training with Dr. Rosie, check out her website: www.theparadigmshifts.com

If you are like me, you have probably had little to no formal preparation on how to support a grieving student. Yet, how many times have you had a grieving student in your classroom? Did you even know? Depending on their age, students display signs of grieving differently.  I was a student who lost a parent before completing high school. My teachers were not prepared. In my time in education, I have witnessed students lose someone close to them due to illness, suicide, homicide, or some other tragic event. Though I've learned a little more over the years, I would still not say I am prepared. I felt we needed an expert to help us out. In my opinion, there is no need to look any further than Dr. David Schonfeld, MD, FAAP, Director of the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement. Dr. Schonfeld has provided consultation and training to schools on supporting students and staff at times of crisis and loss for over 30 years. After listening to this week's Anchored in Education episode, head over to www.escottengland.com to find the show notes. There you can read more about Dr. Schonfeld as well as find websites and resources for supporting grieving students.

Counsel it, comfort it, but encourage it not, for its countenance must not be allowed to roam freely. Though I've only scratched the surface of adulthood, I don't want to trivialize the lessons and experiences I've had so far. I recently took Friday off for a personal mental health day to reset and recharge. The past few months have been some of the most rewarding and challenging I've experienced in my career so far as I adjusted to my new role as Account Supervisor. I entered a new world of management that I wasn't previously familiar with. Though I've accomplished a lot over these months, it certainly hasn't been easy and over the past few weeks I started to feel like I wasn't doing my job well enough. Self-doubt is something I've struggled with over the years so I knew when Marcella recommended me to read You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life, it was exactly what I needed. Author Jen Sincero provides a witty approach to learning how to love yourself and attracting the people and energy you need in life in order to embrace your inner badass. The book starts off with some high-level, feel-good advice but eventually taps into actionable takeaways you can incorporate into your every day. A few of my favorite messages and exercises include: Make enjoying your life a priority Ditch the self-deprecating humor Forgive yourself Take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves Find a cause you care about and give to it every month (however you can, whether by money or time!) Compliment your peers and others Though these may seem obvious to you, I promise that the sentiments go much deeper. Here is the 57th instalment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Rasyid Juraimi of Singaporean stoner rockers Marijannah. I caught up with Rasyid when Marijannah played Rumah Api, on the same night that I interviewed Australian psychedelic metal band Potion (with whom Marijannah were touring). Though I've seen him play a number of times, and have actually interviewed his Wormrot bandmate Arif twice, this interview was the first time I've spoken with Rasyid. We talked about Marijannah's origins, the difference between writing for stoner rock and grindcore, as well as the setbacks the band faced in getting their debut album Til Marijannah released. Though the focus of the interview was on Marijannah, I couldn't help but ask about Wormrot's show at this year's Maryland Deathfest - thus concluding a triptych started back in January on the Wormrot podcast and continued in April on the Code Error episode. It turns out this story had a happy, drunken, trashcan-throwing ending. My thanks again to Rasyid for talking to me, and to you for listening. Episode 239: Life After McClelland Welcome & Housekeeping: Jon David and Beau huddle safely in the Country Squire during a torrential downpour and tornado watch. God bless their dedication! Jon David’s wedding is coming up and the bachelor party is this weekend! Pay attention to Beau’s twitter handle for streaming announcements. You might just catch Jon David blending. We wish them a safe and fun weekend! Sadly, Jon David will have to bring the cigars himself. Beau discusses briefly his secret plans for the CSR show whilst Jon David is away on his honeymoon. CSR Club Members have the skinny. Randall Morgan shows up at the shop to attend the live show and brought gifts! Ashton’s Brindle Flake from 1999 for JD and a Jar Jar Binks action figure for Beau. Okay maybe a waterproof pouch for Beau too. And some whiskey! Man, what a guy! Thanks to Randall! Next on the docket. Mark Fresa (sp?) notified JD that at Gulf Stream Park in Ft. Lauderdale Florida on Saturday March 3rd, a horse named The Country Squire came in 10th in the 11th race of the day. We need to all come together, and rally around this special horse. Send your good vibes. We need to keep him out of the glue factory! Triple Crown buddy! Triple Crown! One last thing, last week I missed one new CSR Pipe Club member and we have one this week too. So I’ll mention both this week! Jace Wilkinson and Adam Larkin! Lastly, Benjamin Snell joins on as a Patron. Thanks gentlemen! Topic: As we still reel from the loss of McClelland as a company we know and love, we pivot this week to a brighter future and visit some tobaccos that might be worth trying again, or perhaps trying for the first time, in our individual quests to find new favorites. It’ll be good to explore the world of tobaccos outside of McClelland. There will be no perfect matches or direct translations, but these will be some tobaccos that we might keep in mind as we try to find comparable substitutes. McClelland was the King of Virginia tobaccos. 5100. Christmas Cheer. 40th Anniversary. Hard to match. Let’s take Cornell & Diehl as a starting example. Red Virginia Ribbon. Not aged the same way, but nice ribbons. Mellow. Toasty. Red Virginia Cavendish. Semi-sweet, nutty, toasty flavor. Chunky cut, kind of like 5100. Also makes good blending tobacco. Might be a good substitute for that purpose. Another example is Lane Bright Virginia. Inexpensive. Tasty. Medium bodied. Buttery. Bit of nicotine. Slow smoker. Dark Star is another venerated McClelland VA. Sam Gawith Full Virginia Flake might be worth checking out as a replacement. 40th Anniversary, similar to Christmas Cheer, is another tough one to match in recommendations, but one that might be worth trying is Mac Baren Navy Flake. While it might not be VA-forward, its body and strength might remind you of 40th. Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake is something that might be worth trying as well, especially since it’s inexpensive and sold in bulk. Maybe you’d like to try some different cigar leaf blends to try something comparable to Dominican Glory? James Fox The Banker’s Mixture might be a good replacement for that. For heavy Balkan and English mixtures, a nice recommendation that is still available despite it having Syrian Latakia, is Balkan by Brebbia. High percentage of Latakia... maybe 40 or 50%. Smooth, silky, soft, rich. Delectable if you are a Latakia fan. Balkan Sasieni. Relatively easy to get. Intended to be a nice substitute for Balkan Sobranie. What about Frog Morton?! No real substitute here, but recommendations for the croaked frogs to follow! Rattray’s Black Mallory. Black Cav, Latakia, Turkish, VA. Cornell & Diehl Mississippi Mud. This has Cavendish, Latakia, and Perique. Frog Morton Cellar is going to be a tough blend to replace, but it might be worth it to you to hunt down some Esoterica Pembroke (Bagpiper’s Dream by Rattray is the poor man’s Pembroke according to Gene Bowker). No whiskey, but it’s got a cognac top-note that might be pleasing to your palate. If you’re in the market for an English hybrid, The Country Squire’s own Hunting Creek might be worth checking out. Also, Shepherd's Pie at the Squire is the closest they’ve come to matching Frog Morton. Great job on that blend Caleb! Last thing we’ll touch on is one of the Aromatic offerings by McClelland. Tastemaster. Definitely a best seller at The Country Squire. Chocolatey. Caramely. Confectionary. Adjectives! Very sweet and smooth. Jon David is proud to recommend the Squire’s own Tobac du Chocolat in its place. Cornell & Diehl’s Chocolate Cavendish. Sutliff Creme Brulee. Some nice dessert-ish offerings for those that like something on the sweeter side. If you have some suggestions, or if you vehemently disagree, let Jon David and Beau know. They want feedback, good or bad! Pipe Question of the Week: Raphael D. Gomez writes in this week saying “I wanted to know what you thought about using radiator-type pipes in cold weather. Pipes like the Falcon, Kirsten, Hector Wiebe Radiator. I know they have briar bowls but with the cooling and wicking action from the radiator, I wonder if they would be especially good in the cool due to the more extreme temperature differences.” This is definitely one of those situations where a metal pipe will come in handy. Cold weather is rough on pipes all around, especially briar! Radiator pipes are great for strange weather situations since they are so durable and very light. It might not be the pipe you ultimately prefer, but as a substitute for a briar in cold weather, they are absolutely perfect. Quick Fire with the Squire: Comin’ in from Benjamin McMullen. The topic is “areas of history you would like to learn more about.” #1 World War 1 (JD & Beau) or World War 2 #2 Industrial Area (JD & Beau) or Atomic Era #3 Medieval Europe or 15th Century Asia (JD & Beau). They both selected the same things! Benjamin you win! I don’t know what, but you win! Congratulations! Listener Feedback: Drew Ingram writes in. “Quick question gentlemen...will you be doing a St. Patrick’s Day Special? Please keep up the good work. I love listening to the show whenever I can.” A good idea, but we’ll see! It has legs! Brian Parent (sp?) writes in “Hey gang! Thanks for the great show. Keep it up! Never miss an episode and I was truly bummed to hear the news about McClelland especially because they blend some of my favorites. Maybe this creates an opportunity to do an episode where find some similar in bulk and tin blends like Frog Morton, etc.” Brian, great idea! Just rewind this episode! Hope you enjoy it! iTunes review from Randall Morgan! “Whether you smoke a pipe, interested in smoking a pipe, or maybe you just remember the wonderful smell of cherry tobacco from your dad or grandfather's pipe this is the podcast for you. Beau and Jon David are wonderful hosts that make the art of pipe smoking and tobacco accessible for everyone. Though I've only met them a few times in person, Beau and Jon David are people that care not only about pipes and tobacco but the people on the other side of the microphone. I look forward each week to hearing these guys. My favorite podcast by far.” Ending & Wrap-up: Well dang, now my keyboard is broke and my fingers hurt. On becoming "Grand-Pop" As I've been considering the implications of the birth of this second generation that has sprung from me, I've been sobered. Though Wyatt's upbringing falls mainly on my son and his sweet wife, Hannah, I have a deep conviction in my soul that I am responsible in some very important ways as well. Here are some of the things that come to mind: For now, they live in the same town as we do, so I have the opportunity to invest the seeds of what God has done in my life, into his life personally - through my interaction with his parents and by building my very own relationship with him (I'm "Grand-Pop," by the way). When/if they move away (I'll hate that day when/if it comes), I'll have to be intentional about those things long-distance. I'll have to write letters, send e-mails, make phone calls, do video calls... whatever it takes to make sure that I'm adding to Wyatt's life what the LORD would have me add. I can always pray for him... and I'm learning not to take that lightly. I believe that as James says, the prayers of a righteous man avail much (James 5:16). Through Christ I have the opportunity to capitalize on the righteousness He has given to me, on Wyatt's behalf. I can pray for him confidently, powerfully, and according to the truth of God and EXPECT to see good come of it. I'm just learning to do that as I begin my Grand-Pop journey. A great pattern for prayer Though I've been a believer in Christ for many years, and have practiced prayer for all that time, I feel like I'm JUST NOW beginning to learn how to pray. I'm just now devoting significant blocks of time to the practice, just now beginning to understand some of what Jesus taught about it, and just now really beginning to apply the head knowledge I've had all these years. [pullquote]When it comes to prayer, I'm sorrowful it's taken me so long to learn... but grateful for the LORD's patience, mercy, and grace to get me where I need to be.[/pullquote] Just yesterday, as I was going through my prayer list, I came upon Wyatt's name. The gravity of my responsibility as his "Grand-Pop" almost crushed me. I realized that my prayers for him matter greatly. I wanted to do my utmost to call down the blessing of heaven on his new, but significant life. As I thought about his infant soul (he's just turned 5 months old) I quickly realized that his main need at this point in life is for the LORD to become his... and for him to become the LORD's. Wyatt, though an "innocent" child, is not innocent at all. He's born a sinner and therefore needs the Savior. I want redemption for him. I want forgiveness for him. I want the new life in Christ that the scriptures promise for all who will believe. I want Wyatt to believe. So I began to pray... and found myself praying according to the pattern of the "parable of the sower" Matthew 13:3-9. There, Jesus describes a farmer who is planting seed, a symbol of the truth of God. He also describes 4 different soils, symbols for the human soul, where the farmer plants the seed. Different things result in each case. Here's how Jesus describes it and defines it: VS 3-4: A sower went out to sow.And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Jesus' interpretation - VS 19: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. I don't want Wyatt's soul to be the kind that is confused or unable to grasp the truth of the word of God's kingdom. I want him to be able to understand. If he's not able to understand, our enemy, the devil, will come and snatch away the seeds his parents and others are planting in his soul. So I pray for Wyatt to be open, receptive, and given understanding to grasp the word of God. VS 5-6: Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Jesus' interpretation - VS 20-21: As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. I don't want the good work Wyatt's parents are doing in teaching him the ways of the LORD to be something that stays on the surface. I want to see him take it in, deeply, and grow from it. So I pray that the cares of the world and the hardships of life would not be able to quench the joy he can have from a true knowledge of the LORD. VS 7: Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Jesus' interpretation - VS 22: As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. It would break my heart to see Wyatt raised in a home that honors and teaches the word of God faithfully, yet somehow, the deceitfulness of prosperity and the cares of life in a fallen world are able to make him so self-centered and self-protective that he rejects the word for the sake of gaining other, temporary, lesser things. So I pray for Wyatt to have a delight in the word of God... to see it for the treasure that it truly is. I ask the LORD to do this over and over and over in his life each day. VS 8: Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Jesus' interpretation - VS 23: As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty. THIS is the kind of life I want for Wyatt, the kind of soul I want the LORD to create in him. I pray that the LORD will make Wyatt's soul into "good soil," able to receive the word of God in all its fullness and power. I want him to understand it, to understand his own need for it, and for that understanding to bear the fruit of a godly, overcoming, God-honoring life. A prayer for my grandson Here's the actual prayer I prayed that day... straight from my journal: Wyatt is in great need of Your redemption dear LORD. He is yet to see his own sin, much less be able to repent of it. Father, prepare the soil of his soul for the seed of Your word. Make it good soil - free of the rocks that prohibit growth and free of the bent toward worries that would cloud his view and fill his heart with fear or self interest. Do not allow the thorns and cares of the world to choke out the seed of truth, the life of Jesus that can set him free. LORD Jesus, make Wyatt into good soil, ready to receive Your word at the appointed time, ready to produce the hundredfold fruit and blessings You have in store for his lifetime. Why I wrote this post I don't recount this story to brag or make you think highly of me or my family. I am what I am by the grace of God, and for no other reason (1 Corinthians 15:10). I write this post to spark your thinking about how YOU can pray for those under your care or in your family line... Your spouse Your children Your grandchildren Your great grandchildren Your parents Your siblings Your distant relatives And the list goes on... Who could you be praying for along the lines of Jesus' parable? Who needs YOUR interceding prayer? Will you rise to the challenge and take on warfare for the sake of their soul?

Though I've never met Bec Van Leeuwen in person, I've watched with quiet admiration as she's created her heart-centred, soul-aligned biz -- Soul Sister Circle -- an organisation that creates opportunities for women to come together to learn, be inspired, forge meaningful friendships, and create powerful collaborations. You only need to glance briefly at the work Bec is doing to know that she is in tune, connected, and committed to her soul's work. My assumption was that Bec had always been this way. So, when Bec began sharing her story with me, I was shocked to find someone whose past story was just like mine. Her need to control, her struggle with letting go, her unattainable desire for perfection, her fear of letting herself truly feel, defining her own self-worth and identity by her job title.  I felt the grip around my heart release slightly as she shared all this with me. Finally, here is someone who has been entrapped in her own struggle cycle of control and fear but has somehow managed to break free. Here is someone who has been in the trenches, doing the work, learning the lessons, making the mistakes and learning again. Here is someone who is human, real, just doing the best she can at each moment in time. Bec's journey is refreshing because there's no overnight success story and no false pretence that she's got it all figured out. It was only through her learning how to get out of her own way, finally let go and give herself permission to fully express herself and her soul's desires in this world, when the magic truly started to happen. If you feel lost or like a slow learner or like you're behind every body else in this journey of self-awakening and transformation, this is THE story for you.
