US envoy Witkoff starts talks in Qatar as Israel proposes truce extension "US presidential envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, has begun talks in Qatar to push for progress on releasing Israeli captives amid a proposal by Tel Aviv to extend a ceasefire deal in besieged Gaza for 60 days, Israel's public broadcaster KAN reported. The first 42-day phase of a three-phase ceasefire and prisoner swap deal, each of equal length, between Hamas and Israel, brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the US, ended March 1 after starting on January 19. Israel has reneged on the truce deal announced by Biden administration last year and wants to impose its own new deal on Palestine." White House puts pressure on Columbia University as it seeks to deport pro-Palestine activists "The White House says Columbia University is refusing to help federal agents find people being sought as part of the government's effort to deport participants in pro-Palestine demonstrations. In a briefing with reporters in Washington, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said federal authorities have been ""using intelligence"" to identify other people involved in campus demonstrations critical of Israeli aggression. She said Columbia had been given names and was refusing to help the Department of Homeland Security ""to identify those individuals on campus""." Syrians rally in support of new government after attacks by Assad loyalists "Hundreds of civilians have gathered in Syria's Latakia to express support for the government forces following recent incidents in the province. People assembled in Sheikh Dahir Square in the centre of Latakia, holding banners with Arabic messages, including: ""The forces of the deposed regime have destroyed the infrastructure"", "The Alsharaa government represents me", and ""We stand with the security forces"". Some demonstrators carried flags of the Syrian Army, while others displayed photos of security personnel who died in clashes between March 6 and 10." Portuguese government loses confidence vote, paving way for snap elections "Portugal could be heading to its third general election in three years after the centre-right government of Prime Minister Luis Montenegro lost a vote of confidence. The vote was called over conflict-of-interest accusations against Montenegro involving a family business. A last-minute attempt to avoid the vote failed when terms could not be agreed for setting up a mooted parliamentary inquiry. The country's president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, must now decide whether to dissolve the assembly and call new elections." India bans Kashmir political parties days after criticising 'obscene' fashion show "The Indian government has imposed a five-year ban on two local political parties in India-administered Kashmir, declaring them ""unlawful associations"" threatening India's sovereignty, integrity and security. According to Indian Home Ministry, the Awami Action Committee (AAC) and the Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM), were accused of ""supporting terrorism, spreading anti-India narratives, and raising funds for secessionist movements in the region"". The Indian government invoked Section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 to enforce the five-year ban."

The past several days have seen horrifying sectarian massacres in Syria. Over 1,000 people have been killed, mostly Alawites and some Christians, in Latakia and Tartus. The perpetrators? Sectarian death squads from HTS, led by Syria's new president, Mohammed al-Jolani—formerly the leader of Al-Qaeda in Syria.Western media is whitewashing these atrocities, falsely framing them as “revenge” against pro-Assad remnants. But the truth is clear: Syria is now controlled by Salafi jihadists who openly target minorities. How did this happen? What is the reality on the ground? And why is the media complicit in covering up genocide?Veteran war correspondent Elijah Magnier joins Dispatches for a special live episode to break down the facts the media won't tell you.

//The Wire//1900Z March 10, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: CHAOS CONTINUES IN SYRIA. MAJOR SHIP COLLISION IN NORTH SEA.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-North Sea: Early this morning a serious vessel collision was reported between two large cargo vessels. The M/V STENA IMMACULATE was lying at anchor when she was struck by the M/V SOLONG this morning. The collision resulted in a large and uncontrolled fire, which caused the crews of both vessels to abandon ship. Various Coast Guard forces carried out large-scale rescue operations throughout the day, recovering approximately 32x mariners from their liferafts by this afternoon.AC: At the moment, the status of the recovered crew members is unknown. It also isn't clear as to if either vessel is sinking, due to the fires preventing an assessment of watertight integrity. The STENA IMMACULATE is a US-flagged tanker vessel that was in these waters reportedly to resupply a US Navy vessel with aviation fuel. Per AIS ship tracking data, the SOLONG was very likely at fault, directly colliding with the STENA's port side directly amidships, without deviating from course or attempting to slow down. Consequently, this incident will very likely be subject to a thorough investigation to determine if this collision was intentional.Syria: The violence of the past few days has greatly expanded, and now encompasses many different factions. Most of the fighting has been reported in the northwestern regions of Syria, from Latakia to Baniyas.-HomeFront-USA: This morning Twitter/X suffered a large scale outage. Elon Musk stated that the reason for the outage was related to a large-scale cyberattack.Washington: Attacks on Tesla vehicle dealerships continue with assailants conducting an arson attack in Seattle. Overnight, several Tesla vehicles were set on fire in a storage lot on the corner of 2nd Ave and Spokane Street.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: At the moment it is too soon to tell if a civil war has begun in Syria, however the violence over the past week has been exceptionally disturbing. What originally began as retaliatory massacres of former members of the Assad regime, has transitioned into what most would consider to be ethnic cleansing operations. Christians have been a primary target for many groups, which have formed killing squads specifically with the goal of targeting Christian communities. Other (comparatively moderate) Muslim factions have also been targeted, with the Alawite ethnic group continually suffering massacres as well.Tragically, Syria is not unfamiliar with this development, as the long and weary Syrian Civil War of recent memory resulted in similar levels of factional violence. However, in this case, there is no somewhat stable regime to exert some sort of control over some parts of the nation. In short, those who thought Assad was a madman have not met Mohammad al-Julani, Syria's new leader who climbed to notoriety not via family aristocracy...but by hopping from militant group to militant group (and gaining warlord status along the way).Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//

You can't even imagine how significant this defeat is. Unfortunately, Western politicians don't fully grasp this.  Otherwise, we would draw proper conclusions from this failure. Let's start with the fact that during the early years of Syrian civil war, Moscow did not offer much help to Assad. Most of the assistance was limited to miserable food supplies sent as humanitarian aid to Syrians. I remember seeing firsthand in 2012 how bags of gray, cheapest Russian pasta delivered with great pomp to Latakia airport were discarded by the roadside. When I asked locals why they treated the aid  that way, they replied, "We won't reject help when it's offered, but we can't eat this stuff. Have you seen this pasta? Even our dogs won't touch that garbage."  Putin turned his attention to Syria only after starting the war against Ukraine in 2014, that's when Russia got involved in a foreign war. From the outset, Putin pursued several objectives in Syria: trying to find common ground with the West, which was already fighting ISIS there, supporting the kindred dictatorship of Assad and testing weapons and military tactics for later use against Ukraine. For years, Syria became the top topic of Russian propaganda. It was declared Russia's closest ally. TV broadcasts proclaimed Syria as the birthplace of orthodox Christianity, emphasizing the need to protect it from Islamists. Instead of pasta bullets, missiles and mercenaries were sent to Latakia and Damascus.  Here I need to pose and remind you that the only way this podcast is monetized is through your donations. It's tough without them. Please check the episode description for all the necessary details on how to support me. Thank you.  Back to Syria. Russia poured tens of billions of dollars into the conflict. These funds were spent on weapons, infrastructure, propaganda, and even Russian language textbooks, which suddenly became mandatory in Syrian schools. Enormous sums were spent on the war that was supposed to be Putin's triumph. He even visited Syria himself boasting about how he had won and how everything would now be wonderful.  In return for these billions, the Russians secured from Assad the continued operation of a Soviet era level base in Tartus. This base became the primary supply hub for Russian allies and mercenaries in Libya, the Central African Republic, and our countries of region. And now, all of this has suddenly vanished. Assad, Russia's best friend, is gone. A country so significant for Christianity has been surrendered. Russia is on the verge of losing its basis, and billions have been wasted for nothing. And what does Putin do? Nothing. His propaganda machine simply blames Iran, claims that the Syrians did something wrong, or insists that the Russian operation there ended long ago. There's been no nuclear escalation, no mass mobilization, nothing. Their main ally has simply been abandoned it. And this is precisely how Russia will abandon occupied parts of Ukraine. Propaganda  will spin the narrative, but it was actually a victory, not a defeat, that all objectives were achieved and everything is fine.  What's happening in Syria demonstrates to the entire world that Putin will abandon everything and everyone, relinquish any conquests if he's hit hard enough. Don't fear Putin. Strike him. He must lose.

"The message from New York is just the same — that what we are seeing is a violation of the disengagement agreement in 1974." In a post on X, the Israel Defense Forces reported striking most of what it claimed were the strategic weapons stockpiles in Syria in 48 hours "to prevent them from falling into the hands of terrorist elements". Among the actions were more than 350 airstrikes. A "wide range of targets" included antiaircraft batteries, Syrian Air Force airfields and dozens of alleged weapons production sites in Damascus, Homs, Tartus, Latakia and Palmyra. Syria's naval operations were also targeted, including the Al-Bayda port and the Latakia port, where 15 Syrian naval vessels were hit. Pedersen said Syria is still in a very "fluid" period, adding that there is a real opportunity for change, but it needs to be grasped by the Syrians themselves and supported by the UN and the international community. Abu Mohammad Al-Jolani, leader of the opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham that led the rebel offensive and wrested control of Syria, told CNN that their goal had been to overthrow Syria's longtime president Bashar al-Assad. Syria's caretaker Prime Minister Mohamed al-Bashir called for stability and calm amid a leadership change. On Wednesday, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the toppling of Assad was the result of a plan by the United States and Israel.11日,伊朗最高领袖阿亚图拉·阿里 ·哈梅内伊表示,阿萨德政权被推翻是美国和以色列共同策划的结果。"What happened in Syria was mainly planned in the command rooms of America and Israel. We have evidence of this. A neighboring government of Syria was also involved," Khamenei said in a speech reported by state media, without naming the neighboring country in question.“叙利亚发生的一切主要是在美国和以色列的指挥中心策划的。 Dina Yulianti Sulaeman, director of the Indonesia Center for Middle East Studies, told China Daily that Israel, which is "most invested in weakening Syria" because of the latter's historically hostile stance toward it, will not allow Syria to become stable and secure. In recent days, Israel has bombarded Syria, destroying nearly all of Syria's military facilities, effectively leaving the country with no capacity to defend its sovereignty," she said. The accumulation of Israeli attacks, the collapse of infrastructure safeguarding territorial sovereignty, economic hardships, and internal chaos bring the potential for Syria's balkanization, as long envisioned in Israel's Oded Yinon Plan."“以色列持续的袭击、捍卫领土主权的基础设施的崩溃、经济困难以及内部混乱,都为叙利亚的巴尔干化带来了可能,而这正是以色列的‘伊农计划'长期以来所设想的。”The Oded Yinon Plan refers to a strategy, outlined in a 1982 article by a former Israeli official and scholar, for Israel's expansion in the Middle East and North Africa region.“伊农计划”是指以色列前官员、学者伊农在1982年发表的一篇文章中概述的以色列在中东和北非地区扩张的战略。sterileadj.

Syria's rebels claim to have reached the city limits of Homs in their lightning offensive south from Idlib which has already seen them capture the country's second city Aleppo as well as Hama. Capturing Homs would isolate the regime stronghold of Latakia on the Mediterranean coast. Meanwhile the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says an uprising of militias in the south of the country has forced President Assad's forces to withdraw from Daraa. In Romania, the constitutional court has annulled the first round of the Presidential elections, which saw an outsider claim the most votes amid allegations of a foreign-backed influence campaign. And as France prepares to reopen a restored Notre Dame cathedral, we hear some of the music that has resonated within its walls throughout its more than 800-year history.
