This episode we spoke with Carolyn Korsmeyer about taste and the aesthetics of food, replicating ancient meals found in tombs, leaving sticky fingerprints on cookbooks, writing fiction novels as a philosopher, and a lot more in this wide-ranging conversation. Show Notes:Follow us on Twitter at @FoodThoughtPod, and you can drop us a line at ThoughtAboutFood on Gmail. Leave us a review! It helps people find the show.Carolyn Korsmeyer is an author of numerous books, and Research Professor of Philosophy at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. One of the important early works on taste that we discussed was by David Hume. You can check out a version of this very interesting and influential work here, prepared by Early Modern Texts, which adapts important older texts to an easier, more modern version of English. The recipe Carolyn brought for this episode is for gingerbread. As we discussed this episode, cookbooks with all their material reality of notes and stains connects us to the past, and are aesthetic objects in their own right. So rather than transcribe the recipe here, I've uploaded the scan of her cookbook as this episode's image. The intro and outro music is "Whiskey Before Breakfast" which is both a great traditional song and a good way to set the stage for some gingerbread in the morning. It was performed and shared by The Dan River Ramblers under a Creative Commons license.

On July 11th Norwich City lost 4-0 to West Ham confirming the Canaries' relegation from the Premier League. But if you listened to Norwich's head coach Daniel Farke after the loss it was clear this outcome was inevitable and he didn't seem overly concerned.    That's because both Farke and the club were prepared for the relegation. Just as they were also prepared to sell Ben Godfrey and Jamal Lewis in the summer.    It is this forward-thinking that has Norwich atop the Championship table. Today we take a look at Norwich City and ask, what’s the purpose of a football club?   Guest:   Murad Ahmed (@muradahmed) is the sports editor of the Financial Times.   Support Us: https://www.patreon.com/FootballToday Follow Us: @FT_Podcast_ www.FootballTodayPodcast.com Music: The music for this episode was provided under the Creative Commons license by Blue Dot Sessions. ‘Ranch Hand’ by Blue Dot Sessions ‘Palms Down’ by Blue Dot Sessions ‘Tessalit’ by Blue Dot Sessions ‘Lakeside Path’ by Blue Dot Sessions ‘Peacetime’ by Blue Dot Sessions

A farmer and his friend are shot dead on the farmer's property. Suspicion falls on his newly hired farmhand, who is arrested along with his brother in law. They're convicted on ballistics evidence which showed that the bullets could only have been fired from the suspect's gun. However, later a new suspect emerges causing the case to be revisited. On further inspection, the bullets weren't properly inspected at all, leading to the invention of a new tool. Our third episode in a series I have affectionately come to know as "BWB" -- Black Woman Burnout. And what we are going to be talking about today is just how much we, as Black women, repress our emotional selves -- how we repress those things that we feel afraid to express or don't have time to express or don't give ourselves permission to express. And so the title of this particular episode is "Sometimes you just want to holla!" Today, I have my sister with me and her name is Ramona Outlaw. Ramona first of all, is a retired high school principal in the Chicago Public School system. Even as late as today, even though she's retired, they're still calling her and she's still answering. She's been an educator for over 25 years and one of her greatest loves in life is traveling.  What she says about education and teaching is that she did not choose teaching -- teaching chose her and kept choosing her for over 26 years.  *** If this conversation has brought you to an insight, a story, a sense of relief, please email me at lisa@insideoutrecovery.com with the subject line "Black Woman Burnout." By the middle of January, 49 wealthy countries had administered 39 million doses of the Covid vaccine. But the world’s poorest countries had only done 25 jabs, all of them in just one country: Guinea. Not 25 million, not 25,000 - just 25. Why can’t some countries get hold of the vaccine? Why are rich countries buying more doses than they need? And are we seeing the rise of ‘vaccine nationalism’? So far European giants like Juventus, Liverpool, PSG and Real Madrid have all struggled in their domestic leagues.    But no club has disappointed their fans more than Borussia Dortmund. Following a 2-2 draw against Hoffenheim on Saturday Dortmund sit in 6th place in the Bundesliga. With just 13 games to go the club is 6 points back of fourth-place and are in danger of failing to qualify for the Champions League.    Today we detail Dortmunds disappointing season and break down who will qualify for the final Champions League positions in Germany. My class had a lesson on "conservation" at school today. Miss said it's where people reuse old things or use new things more thoughtfully. Or do stuff differently to stop using up the Earth's resources. She said conservation is important because our planet is sick, and we need to help make it healthy again.Classroom Conservation is a short story from the Tall And True writers’ website, written and narrated by Robert Fairhead. At the end of the episode, Robert provides a writer’s insight into the story, which he wrote in England in 1992.The show notes include links to Classroom Conservation on Tall And True and the podcast's theme music and sound effects.Support the podcast: supporter.acast.com/tall-and-true-short-readsWriter's Insight into Classroom ConservationI wrote Classroom Conservation when I was living in England in 1992. Looking back at my 1992 diary, it was a productive year for me writing-wise. In addition to this short story, I wrote many other stories for magazines and writing competitions. One of these was A Moving Sculpture, which I've shared on Tall And True and narrated for the Tall And True Short Reads podcast.I also wrote a radio play and a couple of travel pieces. And I even submitted a job application to be a research writer for the Rough Guide to Singapore and Malaysia! My writer's life during this period was up and down emotionally. I experienced the highs of finishing and submitting a piece of writing and the lows of rejection letters. And at times, it was a lonely existence. I wrote about this in two Tall And True blog posts: Days of Gentle Rejections and Writing Can Be Lonely.Classroom Conservation was written for a BBC Radio 4 environmental program, Costing the Earth, which is still in production. I enjoyed writing the story and exploring a schoolchild's perspective on conservation. But it's a shame that almost 30 years on many do not heed the teacher's message: "Our planet is sick, and we need to help make it healthy again."I hope you enjoyed this story and got some ideas about conservation. We recap the events of last week and dig right in to the Lunar New Year Event, which was a nice combination of spawns and features. Before we knew it, Roselia Community Day was here, and the next week of Spotlights and Raid Hours was among us.   The annual Valentine’s Day event is back and is filled with friendship and love. We break down the event and discuss how it begins the moment the Lunar New Year event ends, adding to the topic of player burnout. While we are excited to get some new Pokémon added to the game, the real excitement is the return of some 2018 Community Day Moves.   We wrap up with a discussion around the Kanto Tour, as Niantic has kept us on a drop feed of info over the past few weeks. With a new contest announced and details on Shiny Ditto and Shiny Mew, the event is starting to take shape.    February Events - http://bit.ly/LU165February Team GO Rocket Celebration - http://bit.ly/LU165Rocket Roselia Community Day - http://bit.ly/LU166Roselia  Lunar New Year - http://bit.ly/LU165LunarNewYear Valentine’s Day 2021 - http://bit.ly/LU166Valentines Kanto Tour Contest - http://bit.ly/LU166KantoContest  Kanto Tour Update - http://bit.ly/LU166Kanto Kanto Celebration - http://bit.ly/LU166Celebrate  Celebrate Carnival at Home - http://bit.ly/LU166Carnival    Support the show by shopping at TCGPlayer.com using this link - https://bit.ly/TCGPlayerAffiliate    Pokémon Professor Network Merch Store - https://bit.ly/PPNMerchStore  Secret League Pin - http://bit.ly/SecretLeaguePin  Google Calendar - https://bit.ly/LuredUpGoogleCalendar  Willow’s Almanac - https://bit.ly/LU127WillowsAlmanac    info@luredup.com    Inappropriate Voicemail, Text, and Picture Line - 732-835-8639  http://pokemonprofessor.com  https://www.luredup.com http://bit.ly/PokeProfNetPatreon  http://bit.ly/PokeProfNetFacebook  http://bit.ly/PokeProfNetTwitter  http://bit.ly/PokeProfNetYouTube  http://bit.ly/PokeProfNetInstagram  http://bit.ly/LuredUpTumblr  http://bit.ly/LuredUpApplePodcasts   http://bit.ly/LuredUpSpotify  http://bit.ly/LuredUpStitcher  http://bit.ly/LuredUpGooglePodcasts  http://bit.ly/LuredUpIHeartRadio  https://bit.ly/LUPodchaser    Hosts Ken Pescatore Adam Tuttle   Writer and Producer Ken Pescatore   Executive Producer  Paul Bhatt   Show music provided by GameChops and licensed through Creative Commons   ▾ FOLLOW GAMECHOPS ▾ http://instagram.com/GameChops http://twitter.com/GameChops http://soundcloud.com/GameChops http://facebook.com/GameChops http://youtube.com/GameChops http://www.gamechops.com   Intro Music Lake Verity (Drum & Bass Remix)  Tetracase GameChops - Ultraball http://gamechops.com/ultraball/ https://soundcloud.com/tetracase  https://soundcloud.com/MegaFlare0   Break Music National Park Mikel & GameChops GameChops - Poké & Chill http://smarturl.it/pokechill https://twitter.com/mikel_beats   Outro Music Vast Poni Canyon CG5 & GlitchxCity (Future Bass Remix) GameChops - Ultraball http://gamechops.com/ultraball/  http://soundcloud.com/cg5-beats https://soundcloud.com/glitchxcity Pokémon And All Respective Names are Trademark and © of Nintendo 1996-2020Pokémon GO is Trademark and © of Niantic, Inc.Lured Up and Pokémon Professor are not affiliated with Niantic Inc., The Pokémon Company, Game Freak or Nintendo.   #pokemon #pokemongo #podcast

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, but the only love affair that Seeing & Believing has time for is that between Ralph Fiennes and archaeological excavations. Netflix's The Dig tells the true story of how a widow (Carey Mulligan) teamed up with a working-class excavation expert (Fiennes) to make one of Great Britain's greatest archaeological discoveries on the eve of World War II. Wade and Kevin dig into the film (heh) to examine its themes of time, the fleeting nature of life, and the ways in which the past can give meaning to the present and even the future. Todayís episode of Seeing and Believing is sponsored in part by The Good Book Company, publisher of Steve McAlpineís book Being the Bad Guys. The Good Book Company is giving away 5 copies of Being the Bad Guys to CAPC members! For a chance to win, become a member at ChristAndPopCulture.com by February 17.
