Did you know that the most trafficked animal in the world isn't elephants, rhinos, or tigers—but the humble pangolin? These elusive, armor-clad creatures, often called "scaly anteaters," are so rare that many people have never even heard of them. And yet, they are being pushed to the brink of extinction due to illegal wildlife trade. In this eye-opening episode of Fur Real, I sit down with Dr. Matthew Shirley of the Pangolin Specialist Group, who works closely with IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) to protect these incredible mammals. We uncover jaw-dropping facts about pangolins—like how their 16-inch-long, ultra-sticky tongue helps them feast on insects, even though they don't have teeth! Plus, they are the only mammals covered in scales, which they use as a built-in defense system, rolling into an impenetrable ball when threatened. But here's the dark truth: pangolins are being hunted at alarming rates for their meat and scales, making them a prime target for black market trade. Dr. Shirley breaks down what's being done to combat this crisis—from dismantling illegal trafficking networks to implementing innovative conservation strategies that protect both pangolins and the rural communities affected by the trade. This episode is packed with mind-blowing facts, conservation efforts, and ways YOU can help save one of the world's most unique and endangered creatures. In our latest Hootworthy episode, we had the pleasure of chatting with Autumn, an eighth-grader at GCA who is also a compassionate cat rescuer. Her journey into the world of cat rescuing began when a family property became a refuge for a feral cat colony. Autumn, alongside her grandmother, embarked on a mission to rescue kittens and prepare them for their forever homes. With three years of professional cat rescue experience and a total of eight years dedicated to the cause, Autumn shared the details of their approach. For feral cats, the goal is to catch, spay or neuter, and release, unless the feline can be tamed for eventual adoption. The methods involve live traps, strategically designed metal boxes with enticing food, and a drop trap for more elusive subjects.Autumn shed light on the heartwarming efforts to find suitable homes for non-feral cats after spaying or neutering. From rescuing multiple kittens at once to daring escapades, like retrieving a lost kitten stuck in a tree near a dog park, every experience in cat rescue has left an unforgettable mark.A poignant lesson Autumn shared was the importance of not judging someone's circumstances, a wisdom gleaned from her cat-rescue endeavors. As she navigates her eighth-grade year at GCA, Autumn appreciates the flexibility the school provides, allowing her to seamlessly balance education with her passion for cats.Autumn, your dedication to rescuing our feline friends is commendable! Keep up the fantastic work, stay hootworthy, and continue making a positive impact in the lives of these furry companions.

Danielle and Elizabeth talk cats, fleas and worms. Yucky, but necessary. Danielle noticed fleas and worms on and in her outside cat, and the steps she took to rid her environment of them. She was pretty disgusted by those little cat tormentors, I have to say, Danielle keeps a very clean house so she was shocked when she saw signs of fleas and worms! They talked about when to take a cat to the vet and when to administer the worm medication yourself, and of course they talked about outside cats and reunion stories, as well as Tommy's Cat Rescue. “It's a matter of starting from the ground up; not having the resources, but still getting it done." This episode is sponsored in part by Urban Cat League and Maddie's Fund. In this episode, Stacy chats with Dr. Becky Morrow, a shelter veterinarian and professor who is very active in the small animal community. As a veterinarian, Dr. Morrow shines a light on what vets are typically exposed to during vet school – and just how limited their knowledge may be when it comes to community cats and the overwhelming demand for low-cost spay/neuter services. They discuss how Dr. Morrow first began her mobile clinic – with a box trailer turned surgical suite – to offer much-needed HQHVSN services on the road, utilizing caregivers' homes, fire halls, and other community spaces to get the job done. They conclude their conversation with the veterinary shortage, ruminating on what can be done to help create more spay/neuter opportunities in our communities. For Dr. Morrow, the solution lies in providing more training opportunities for veterinarians to gain competence – and confidence – in performing HQHVSN surgeries. They talk about the overall benefits of HQHVSN techniques, and why they shouldn't be limited to just the animal welfare space. Did you know there is a rescue sanctuary dedicated to blind cats? Linda and Rita were amazed to find such a wonderful rescue, full of happy cats who don't miss their sight at all. Since cats mainly rely on their sense of smell and the vibrations of their whiskers to make their way through the world, their lack of site doesn't slow them down one bit. Meeting Katherine Hilton, Program Manager or Donor Relations and Stewardship for Blind Cat Rescue, was a heartwarming experience. She has so much love for these special cats, who get around just as well as any other cat. You can even visit BlindCatRescue.Com and see for yourself via their 24-Hour LIVE CAMS! Join Linda and Rita as they talk with Katherine about the sanctuary, and why she tells people “Don't feel sorry for them” because these cats are just as happy as can be!
