Our featured guest tonight is Jon David Cole. JD is the Owner/Tobacconist at The Country Squire in Jackson, MS, and the accompanying online store. We'll have JD and Brian talking about Jon David's personal pipe collection, sales trends for pipes and tobacco at the shop, and the challenges presented by the pending closure of Sutliff Tobacco. They have been the supplier of many component tobaccos for several of The Country Squire's house blends. If you haven't heard the news from earlier this year - Scandinavian Tobacco Group bought Mac Baren, which owned Sutliff. Internal documents were leaked from STG showing that they will shutting down Sutliff completely, and eliminating most of the products. This will be an extended conversation, so we will skip the usual Pipe Parts opening segment.

As a result, we are in a strange Wack-a-Mole game in which applying AI for defense has become so complex that each application seems to require specific skill sets. Today, we sit down with two leaders of NRLabs to discuss their unique approach to applied AI. NRLabs leverages the founders' diverse aerospace engineering and cybersecurity backgrounds to provide innovative solutions, including penetration testing and red team activities. Individuals can become limited in understanding these nuances. As a result, NRLabs has formed a method called the Cyber Collab, where they meet regularly to offer individual perspectives and applications. Because of this, they continue research and testing on using localized adversarial AI models to identify vulnerabilities in cloud-based AI platforms. During the interview, Jon David details exploring opportunities to partner with organizations like CISA's Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative (JCDC) to enhance collaboration and information sharing on critical infrastructure security.

Episode 490: The Time Has Come...Join us in Jackson, MS at The Country Squire on MARCH 4th 2023 for the grand finale of Country Squire Radio! Details at TheCountrySquireOnline.comTo see the pictures of Jon David from the earliest days of recording be sure to check out patreon.com/CountrySquireRadioListener Feedback: Mitchell Chambers - Hi Beau & JD, I am a new listener who discovered the CSR podcast about a week ago. I've been a pipe smoker for almost a year now and today I signed up for your patreon at the listener level. Thank you both for so many incredible podcasts. I have been bingeing some older episodes and today I found myself getting quite emotional while listening to the episode on the soldier and sailor archetypes. It made me thinking of all the WW2 vets that I went to church with when I was a kid. Sadly, they've all passed on now. In the show you mentioned the famous Marine, Alabamian, and pipe smoker, Dr. Eugene Sledge, who was my granparent's neighbor at one time. Dr. Sledge taught biology at the university in my hometown of Montevallo, Alabama. He died when I was still quite young. But I've been told he was a private man who was often seen smoking his pipe and bird watching. Thank you both for the incredible work.Jeremy Dukes - I hope you both had a wonderful holiday season with your families. Looking back on all the new-style-format shows in ‘22, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how well they fit with the tone of the show itself. I often listen to Country Squire Radio while working in the woodshop, and I found the intimacy of the episodes felt similar to when friends are over shooting-the-breeze with me while I pine away on some project. In fact, a couple of the “Father to Father” episodes were so poignant, I stopped whatever I was working on, sat down with my pipe, and listened intently because I was connecting so well to the conversation as a young(ish) father myself. Love what you guys do and appreciate you both for doing it.Hello Beau and Master Jon David, I hope you guys are doing well. I would like to know your take on pipe smoking while eating. As a predominantly evening pipe smoker myself, this is the time of the day when my wife and I sit down to nibble some food and enjoy a glass of wine or beer while talking about our day. This moment of interaction and relaxation seems perfect for a nice bowl of tobacco. However, by this time, I am already hungry and need to eat something. At first, I avoided ‘pairing' pipe tobacco and food but, as time went by, I kind of got used to it. Now, I do not mind smoking my pipe while eating. Of course, I do not do it Hobbit-in-fallen-Isengard style, but rather keep altering between eating, drinking, and smoking. Well, I hope I am not committing any heresy here, but that is how things typically go for me. LOL And I would not give up this moment of partnership and communion with my wife for nothing in this world. Love the show. Love you guys (if I am allowed to say that). Keep up the good work. Step into the Country Squire Tobacconist on any given day and you're likely to find a group of diverse men of all ages sharing their lives, triumphs, and troubles, over a bowl of quality pipe tobacco. In our Father To Father series, we try to capture the realness of conversation you find at your local pipe shop as we share our experience navigating fatherhood as two dads of young kids. This week we are sharing our faith journeys and how that impacts us as fathers. Listener Feedback: (Jim Friedemann) Hello Beau and Jon David, It's been a while since I've emailed you guys. I love your podcast and look forward to it each Wednesday. You mentioned in this week's episode (David Foster Wallace's 2005 Kenyon College Commencement Address) how everyone worships something, even if they don't recognize it as worship. I loved your discussion around this. It got me thinking… there have been times when I've allowed pipe smoking to become an idol. I've had to watch how much I focus on it during the day. It's so easy to muse on “what blend am I going to try today” or “I wonder if I'll get the winning eBay bid on that Castello” or “I wonder if I could find any Esoterica on TurboTin today.” And if that wasn't enough there's always the pipe smoking forums, websites, podcasts, pipe clubs, publications, etc. out there that can easily eat up so much of my focus during the day. I've found that anything that competes with my attention to and affection for the Lord and others should always be suspect. Even good things like our amazing hobby can become an idol if we allow it. Any way, you may not want to read this on a pipe smoking podcast but it's something I think is important for living a balanced, healthy and purposeful life. I so appreciate your perspective and voice in the pipe smoking community. Keep up the great work, guys!! - jfreedyAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
What the FUCK is going on in Columbus County, North Carolina? Courtney Deborah Heater was a beautiful, young, and vibrant woman who decided to give love a chance, and move from her home in Illinois, to Nakina, North Carolina, to be with her boyfriend Julian Fipps. Courtney thought she was being welcomed into a loving, and God-fearing family. What Courtney didn't know was she was about to be thrown into an unhealthy family dynamic, with a lengthy arrest history between both Julian and his father Anthony, and Julian's substance use challenges. After being brutally attacked by Julian in the street, and the attack being reported by neighbors, Courtney was admitted to the E.R. in September of 2019. According to Columbus County, the neighbors were not interviewed, and there is no incident report, nor was Julian ever charged. Why weren't the neighbors interviewed? Why was Julian never charged? Why is there no record of a report according to Columbus County? On February 2nd, 2020, Julian Fipps makes a confusing series of 911 calls, alleging that Courtney is aspirating, but insisting she never did drugs. Her body was found cold, and in a state of lividity, indicating she was obviously deceased for some time - yet Columbus County Sheriff's Office told EMS that they found a pulse, contradicting what they stated in the investigation report (she had no pulse). Courtney's body was found in a BEATEN state, with the autopsy noting dozens of contusions, blunt force trauma to the head, a mysterious mark that resembles a tire on her ankle, fractured ribs, and many other injuries. Yet the cause of death was ruled as an overdose, with no manner of death listed. There is no listed route of administration, and no drugs or paraphernalia were found on scene. Julian changed his story several times, and in one document it is recorded that Courtney began to throw up at midnight, yet the first 911 call isn't placed until 3:24. WHAT HAPPENED TO COURTNEY HEATER? WHY WAS THE STATE OF HER BODY NOT INVESTIGATED? In this episode I dive into the Fipps family, and their close ties with Columbus County Sheriff Jody Greene, who recently resigned after his blatant racism came to light. Yet, somehow, Jody Greene was recently re-elected as sheriff, and is set to return to office in December. Listen to the episode to learn more about the absolute SHIT SHOW that is Columbus County, North Carolina. Get angry, listeners. We need to stop this bullshit. Pipe Question: I've been enjoying some of the so-called "American English" blends lately, which I understand to be primarily burley-based, but with a bit of latakia added. Episode 476: The Library or Study has long been the haven of the contemplative pipe smoker. In our ‘From The Library' series, we take a look into the musings, writings, poetry, and more that pique our interest and consider the mind of the author and how we can, or perhaps can't, relate from our own experience. This week: David Foster Wallace's 2005 Kenyon College Commencement AddressPipe Question: (From Frank) Can I damage my pipe with a pipe cleaner? Specifically the metal piece inside the cleaner. I recently used some…let's say, sub quality cleaners and noticed the metal in the middle was exposed and sharpish to the touch. I inserted into my pipe but could swear I felt a scratching occurring on the inside of the pipe and thus my soul…. Did I damage anything? Could I damage anything? Please help! - FrankQuick Fire Questions: N/AListener Feedback: Dear Beau and Jon David, Earlier today I ordered a fifth of Cedar Ridge Bourbon and had it sent to the Squire, and I wanted to let you guys know a little bit about it. Whether or not you decide to include it in a future Squire Select, I wanted to share a little bit of Iowa with you. Iowa is one of my homes (which has also included Oklahoma, northeast Italy, Chicago, and Ethiopia), and, if I'm being honest, I am surprised at how I've come to love and appreciate the people and the land as much as I do. It is truly a great place to raise a family. That said, although I have had this whiskey in a handful of mixed drinks at various restaurants, I hadn't tried it straight until I ordered some for myself alongside my order for you guys. I'm told that it is the best whiskey made in Iowa, and that it wins awards nationally. I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Enjoy, and thanks for the community that you've cultivated at CSR. P.S. - Jon David, I wanted to thank you for your patience and your kindness as I stuttered and stammered in front of you at the pipe show. Such is my personality that, although I'm sure that you can both enjoy/appreciate and be irritated by folks coming up to you at events, all I can think is that I'm probably being a nuisance, which distracts me from what I'm saying (which, ironically, actually makes me more of a nuisance that if I didn't worry about it!). I imagine that one of the more unexpected challenges of hosting a popular and long-running podcast is that folks (like me) can know quite a bit about you, and can feel like they do know you, while you, of course, know essentially nothing about them, and don't know them at all. Anyway, I'm glad I got to meet you and thank you in person for how you and Beau have helped me over the last couple of years. Your brother in Christ, John
Episodes will continue next week. Thank you always & God Bless!
What would a pipe tobacco podcast be without a good deal of pipe tobacco reviews? So John David. After that wonderful early Sunday dinner. You sit down with a bowl full of your favorite Virginia. Or whatever for example. Maybe it's a Latakia. A few hours later, your ready for your favorite brown water and a cigar. You still remember that wonderful Virginia from earlier. So what cigar should you follow it with? Or vice versa. With pipe tobacco to follow that afternoon cigar? Quick Fire Questions: (From Jeremy) Hey Beau and Jon David, For me, there's nothing quite like finding that “perfect” new pipe. Each section moves and changes based on your preferences. (Matrix style) How do you choose? I hope everyone is well. Listening to the recent “Miami Mailbag” episode & I wanted to point out something: you guys had this feeling that your being in Miami is more of a detour; however, Miami (aka North Cuba) might be (have been) a great place for you all to involve some topics relating to cigars - particularly Cuban cigars. As ambassadors of the tobacco leaf, you both are in a position to bring these types topics to the table, especially in a city like Miami. Cubaño people have a rich history & culture relating to the tobacco leaf industry. I feel you may have missed an opportunity to visit/explore some of those references. We are mixing it up again this week! In the classic style of Squire Select we are pairing a spirit (Yellow Rose Bourbon) with some quality pipe tobacco, but wait, as they say...theres more! We then use that same spirit to create a cocktail and see how it changes the pairing selection. Join us in Vegas for our CSR Live From LVG! - Friday, Saturday & Sunday, October 21 – 23, 2022 | 5:00 pm to 7:oo pm Country Squire Radio – Jon David Cole & Beau York - Saturday, October 22nd! Details: Las Vegas International Pipe Show - The Premiere Show for Pipe Enthusiasts (vegaspipeshow.com) Pipe Question: (From Jeremy Dukes) Hey Beau and Jon David, Erin and I went out to do a trip in the Bourbon Trail last week for my birthday. I'd never been and I cannot praise it enough. All the tours we took were exquisite and informational. Plus, the tastings were amazing. Buffalo Trace (and more specifically Eagle Rare) is my favorite distiller and blend, and we were fortunate enough to tour their facilities. If you've never been, you must put it on your bucket list. Worth every hour of my trip many times over. My question though is this: during the tastings they gave us a small piece of chocolate for a palate cleanser, but our guide actually got us to take a bite of the chocolate and then a swig of Buffalo Trace. It was like I'd never tasted Buffalo Trace before! It enhanced so many flavors of the whiskey that I'd never recognized prior. So…the question…..would a tobacco blend with notes of chocolate (let's say Polar Express) have a like affect on my palate when I drink a glass of whiskey? Hope you both are well and enjoying your “Lunting America Tour”. Best wishes from my family to yours. -jeremy Quick Fire Questions: John Coatney Confirmed Pipe SMokers of Fiction & Literature Edition Henry Mitchell (the dad) or George Wilson (the neighbor) (Dennis the Menace) The Wind in the Willows or Curious George Tony Stark or Professor X Meriadoc Brandybuck or Peregrin Took Listener Feedback: (From Eric Karloski in GR) Beau? You might know him by the names John Rackham, Jack Rackham, or simply Calico Jack, a pipe smoking pirate of history that I present to you as the world's first Millennial Pirate. Let me explain... Country Squire Radio's 'Half Bowl Histories' series takes a look into the history, lore, and legacy of individuals, places, and events of interest that helped shape the world we know today for good and for ill. Here we get a chance to revisit some of the famous pipe smokers we've covered in the past and shift the focus from what they loved to who they were and the complexities of their lives. Pipe Question - (From E) Hi! I love listening to your podcast, discovered it recently and it has been great. I had a question about blends like Early Morning pipe. I like this blend, but ultimately feel it would be better without the latakia. I don't mind a bit here and there, but I'm not a massive fan of latakia. I read somewhere that the blend used to be done without the latakia...by Dunhill, sometime a while ago. I don't know why they changed it, but it's left me craving the nice sweet, smooth flavors without that bit of smokiness. Would you be able to point me in the direction of something like E.M.P without L? Or failing that, if I was to try and mix it myself, what type of Virginia would I need with oriental leaf? Keep up the amazing work, love this resource. E Listener Feedback - (From Scott McCrate) I loved the Jacques Cousteau episode, I was really hooked on his television show as a kid. I have to say you missed one of the best jokes and clues in The Life Aquatic, Cousteau's vessel was the Calypso, in Life Aquatic it was the Belafonte. Harry Belafonte was a famous Calypso singer! I love The Life Aquatic! (From Watson) Beau and Jon David, I want you to know how much I enjoy the show and your dynamic as co-hosts. I think you two could talk about almost anything and it would be listenable based solely on your personalities. As a heavily accented southerner, I also appreciate listening to kindred voices speaking with so much knowledge on a subject. The reason I am contacting you is to recommend someone for the segment formerly known as "Hero of the Bowl." One of the biggest champions of the briar for me has always been Aldo Leopold. He is considered the father of wildlife ecology and was an accomplished writer. He was often photographed with a pipe and they were a constant companion of his while working in the field. Among his many accomplishments is the conceptualization of a "land ethic" which calls for ethical and sustainable use of natural resources. His most popular book, A Sand County Almanac, is a classic and among the first texts those of us studying Wildlife and Conservation read in college. It is certainly worth spending some time reading this book outdoors with a nice billiard early in the morning...quite possibly the very situation in which it was written. I recommend it as a text that many of your listeners may find interesting and I think they would appreciate learning more about Aldo Leopold himself. Thank you for so many great hours of content. You two (and Brian over at Pipes Magazine Radio Show) have unknowingly spent many hours on the road with me as I commute. My car's interior has assumed the scent of your Cherokee blend. Keep up the solid work on all fronts.... - Cheers, Watson
The Library or Study has long been the haven of the contemplative pipe smoker. In our ‘From The Library' series, we take a look into the musings, writings, poetry, and more that pique our interest and consider the mind of the author and how we can, or perhaps can't, relate from our own experience. This week: “The Miracle of Mindfulness” by Thich Nhat Hanh Pipe Question: (From MarkVV) Captain Jorvik and Jon David, Ahoy, fellas! I have a query for both of you! So often Beau is left high and dry on this so I wanted to ask something of him to be inclusive! Jon David. Do different types of tobacco leaf, for instance, bright leaf and red Virginias, age differently or faster than others? Or is it purely a question of sugar content in the leaf? Or both? Or something else? And Beau. If you really were Captain Jorvik of the Seven Seas, what tobacco would you envision your pirate-self smoking? It can be period appropriate or modern, like Country Squire Treasure Island. As always, I hope you both are well, as well as your dear families. Hope to cross paths soon. Your friend, Mark VV Listener Feedback: (From Chables) Beau! Jon David! Hope yall are well! Hope to get to see yall at some point soon what with covid dying down and such. I wanted to say how tickled i was to hear my name in the St Ives drawing. Not gonna lie, i was having a rough end to a rough year, but that really made my day that day and put a smile on my face like yall do so often.

What happens when you reject the state's official paperwork and driver's licenses? When did you begin, and why does that matter politically and spiritually? Who owns you and your biological material? We explore these questions with our old pal Jon David Johnson, with whom Jeff played music back in the day as The Bloodhound Shuffle. He has a unique interpretation of the Bible and political history that you may not agree with, but we found interesting and helpful as a sort of thought experiment, through which we can reframe our origins as biological beings and the relationship between our understanding of that question and the question of who owns us. By going back to before conception, Jon David ties the human being back to oneness with the creative source of existence, something that predates the claims states and churches and parents make over us. CW: police violence, racism, explicit language. Note: Neither we or our guest offer medical or legal advice on this episode.
Every once in a while you kinda want to go big or go home. Problem is, if you are going to spend a little extra, you want to make sure you get quality, authenticity, and a true premium experience. As pipe enthusiasts, we know that ‘matter matters' and we all appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into the various pipes and pipe tobaccos available to us. In this series, we will expand our horizons beyond the pipe to discover top shelf products and experiences that bring us joy and up our sophistication game along the way. This week: Cigars! Listener Feedback: (From Brian) Hey guys! You addressed a question of mine on air recently where I asked about what goes into the naming of blends. Jon David talked about how it was often a very personal process. I was struck when I saw Whale Song appear on the Country Squire website. The name didn't immediately resonate with me, until I read the description. When I realized it was a limited edition made up of McClelland ingredients and that it was a Virginia-Perique (which I know to be among Jon David's favorite styles of blends), I began to realize what the name really meant. Whale Song. Not only evocative of that iconic crested whale image on the cover of so many McClelland tins, but also suggestive of the barely audible song whales use to mourn the loss of family members. This is representative of what a blend name can be. Simple, poetic, like a haiku.

Here we get a chance to revisit some of the famous pipe smokers we've covered in the past and shift the focus from what they loved to who they were and the complexities of their lives. This week, famed painter and pipe smoker: Claude Monet Pipe Question: (From Joel) Hey guys! First off - I LOVE the “Father to Father” series! - especially the most recent one. Thanks for being honest and vulnerable and telling it how it is for all of us dads! Next - I bought a nice pipe rack from a seller on eBay, and it came with a bunch of pipes. Two of these are EA Carey “Magic inch” pipes. They have a perforated area on the stem that lets in cool air - and they take a “papyrate” paper filter. It's really strange, but I have to say - both of these pipes smoke really well! After I cleaned them up and sterilized them, I have really enjoyed them. Just wondered if Jon David had any experience with these pipes. Any road - as always - absolutely love your podcast! Like riding around with two good friends! Thank you! Listener Feedback: (From Chaz) I just received my order of Whale Song in the mail today and I have to say, it was a world class "unboxing" experience. I've gotten several orders from The Country Squire and I always appreciate the hand-written note, but today's delivery was truly exceptional. The accompanying card with the tasting notes, pairings from Tea, to Coffee, to Cocktails was really helpful and a next level touch. Congrats to Quinn. I purchased enough to smoke now with some to cellar, and I can't wait to enjoy this. I love the show, I love the shop and I have to tell you, listening has even been a catalyst in re-connecting me to the faith. I love that I can listen to your show without fear of what might come across the speakers when my grandkids are in the car! Keep up the great work and thanks for making this service available! What would a pipe tobacco podcast be without a good deal of pipe tobacco reviews? Loose leaf, tin, and even the hard to find stuff will all find their way into our pipes and into our heads as we review the entirety of each pipe tobacco from the packaging, marketing, tin note, texture, flavor, and smoke. This week Jon David and Beau review Sutliff Crumble Kake No. 3 and 4th Generation Virginia Flake.

My upcoming book, Bad Deal for America, explores the high-stakes game U.S. politicians are playing with the taxpayers' money. The major players, themselves like a deck of cards, have shown us in their own words that the political system is broken. Readers can follow the money to see how some have lived high on the hog while masquerading as public servants. Told in an entertaining and unique way, this book is a call to arms to fulfill the ideals of the founding fathers by holding the political class responsible. My 2018 book, The Decline of America: 100 Years of Leadership Failures, is a thought-provoking, non-partisan book that reviews the last 100 years of American Presidents (from Wilson through Obama), offering not just criticism, but common-sense solutions to help fix America before it's too late. Kelly Lamb and Jon David met one day before classes started their freshman year at the University of Arkansas in 2009. They ran in the same crowd and even dated some of each other's friends, before realizing after too long that they saw a future together. Following graduation, Kelly moved to New York City and so a long distance relationship began. Unfortunately, on July 6, 2013, Jon David sustained a spinal cord injury from diving into a shallow river leaving him a C4 quadriplegic. "I struggled to cope with his injury and the reality of our new future from nearly 1,000 miles away. I was looking for any way I could tangibly contribute to his recovery", Lamb said. Enter Team Reeve. Six marathons and over $100,000 raised later, Kelly had found her way. On today's episode of The QuadCast, Kelly joins me to discuss her continued commitment to helping fund a cure for spinal cord injury, and to highlight the 2nd Annual Reeve Run & Roll Virtual 5K - September 25 - October 3, 2021.
