Former Dallas Congressman Colin Allred's pivot from a second run for the U.S. Senate is only one of the results of the late-breaking announcement of a Senate run by fellow Dallas lawmaker Jasmine Crockett last week. Allred is now in a primary contest with Congresswoman Julie Johnson, interestingly the official who replaced Allred upon his departure from the U.S. House as he challenged Senator Ted Cruz in 2024. Join Jim and Greg for the Tuesday 3 Martini Lunch as they break down why gas prices are overwhelmingly cheaper in Republican-led states, how Democrats like Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker seem to think releasing criminal illegals is a great way to defy President Trump, and Jasmine Crockett's odd launch to her U.S. Senate campaign.First, they examine new AAA data showing that gas prices in red states are consistently lower than in blue states. Twelve of the sixteen most expensive states are run by Democratic governors, while eight of the ten cheapest states are led by Republicans. Jim walks through all the factors that determine gas prices and why blue states are regularly more expensive.Next, they unload on Democrats such as Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker for eagerly resisting President Trump to the point of releasing criminal illegal immigrants so Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) cannot detain them. Jim and Greg warn that these decisions put violent offenders back into communities simply to score political points. Will they pay a price in 2026?Finally, they dissect Rep. Jasmine Crockett's unusual launch to her Texas U.S. Senate bid, consisting only of a video of herself overlaid with clips of President Trump mocking her. She also argues she'll win because non-white voters are a majority in Texas. Jim and Greg remind her that a lot of those non-whites vote for Republicans, as evidenced by every major statewide race for more than 30 years. Please visit our great sponsors:Listeners can start a new tradition this December with 10% off at BetterHelp—visit https://BetterHelp.com/3ML to get started.Go to https://OmahaSteaks.com, use code 3ML for 50% off sitewide + $35 off during the Sizzle All the Way Sale.Try Quo for free at https://Quo.com/3ML and keep your existing number—Quo means no missed calls and no missed customers.New episodes every weekday.

Jasmine Crockett's launch ad did exactly what it was designed to do: dominate the conversation. It's a sparse spot — just Donald Trump's voice calling her “low IQ” while she slowly turns to camera and smiles—but the message is unmistakable. She's positioning herself as the fighter, the foil to Trump, the progressive star ready-made for the national stage. Whether you think the ad is brilliant, asinine, or somewhere in between, the confidence behind it is unmistakable. This is a politician who believes the moment belongs to her.And the moment may actually be hers. Crockett's entrance triggered the first major domino: Colin Allred is out. Allred saw exactly what was coming: a three-way field in which he was slowly slipping into fourth place, with poll numbers showing Crockett and state representative James Talarico dramatically outpacing him. In politics, you can bow out early or you can be forced out late. Allred chose the former and retreated to a reelection bid for his House seat. It was one of the rare cases of a politician reading a bad hand correctly before the stakes got worse.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. That leaves the primary as a one-on-one: Crockett versus Talarico. And Talarico's opening move — a polite welcome video directed at Crockett — landed with a thud. If Crockett walks into a room like a lightning bolt, Talarico walked in like a guidance counselor. He cannot afford to make this a personality contest. Crockett thrives in personality contests. If he wants to win, he has to make this about message, not magnetism. The question haunting Texas Democrats for years — can a centrist survive a primary built to reward progressives? — will finally get an answer.Democrats dreaming of flipping Texas understand the trap. Yes, Crockett is electrifying. Yes, she's a rising star. But statewide politics in Texas is still shaped by a conservative-leaning bloc of independents who view her as too far to the left. Early polling from the University of Houston and Texas Southern University shows both Crockett and Talarico losing to Attorney General Ken Paxton. Paxton, who was impeached by his own staff, dogged by scandal, and widely regarded as too extreme even by many Republicans. Yet he leads both Democrats by narrow margins. That tells you everything about the strategic stakes. If Democrats nominate a progressive firebrand, even a wounded Republican like Paxton becomes viable. And the fear for Democratic strategists is simple: the moment Crockett wins the nomination, a large number of center-right independents will default to whoever the GOP nominates. That's the shadow hanging over her rise. Her path to the nomination is the clearest. Her path to victory in November may be the hardest.Republicans: A Primary That Shouldn't Be Close, But IsOn the Republican side, the Senate primary is turning into its own demolition derby. For months, John Cornyn seemed secure: the senior statesman, the institutional favorite, the known quantity. But recent polling shows Cornyn clinging to a razor-thin lead over Paxton, with Representative Wesley Hunt sitting as a serious third-place contender. Hunt's entry infuriated the Cornyn team, and with good reason — Hunt is young, popular, and ideologically aligned with the party's post-Trump base in ways Cornyn simply isn't.Paxton, meanwhile, remains the wildcard. He survived impeachment by leaning entirely on his loyalty to Trump, and the MAGA base has rewarded him for it. Trump is widely expected to endorse Paxton, and the only mystery is whether he gives Hunt a co-endorsement. Either way, Cornyn is not getting Trump's blessing, and if you are a Texas Republican trying to win a statewide primary without Trump's blessing in 2026, you are playing football with no helmet. As filing deadlines pass and the field locks in, Republicans now find themselves with the one candidate Democrats most want to face — and simultaneously the only candidate who might actually beat them.If both primaries break the right way, Texas could get the most entertaining political matchup in modern state history: Jasmine Crockett versus Wesley Hunt. Two young, charismatic Black lawmakers representing opposite poles of America's political identity, both natural performers, both eager brawlers. They could fill AT&T Stadium for a debate. They might try. And I would pay to see it.But beneath the spectacle is the deeper truth: Texas politics is in flux. Both parties are being reshaped by their loudest wings. Both are terrified of nominating the wrong candidate. Both primaries could create general-election vulnerabilities neither side fully understands yet. We're watching political identity evolve in real time. And for once, Texas isn't just a red state or a blue target. It's the center of the storm.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:02:19 - Texas Senate Races Heats Up00:17:29 - Update00:19:29 - Republican Healthcare Bill00:22:22 - Ghislaine Maxwell Record Release00:24:03 - Tariff Bailouts00:26:07 - Bill Scher on Dems' 2026 Outlook and More00:58:23 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. Jasmine Crockett sounding increasingly like a 2026 U.S. Senate candidate.First, they're encouraged to see even the New York Times hammering Gov. Tim Walz for failing to stop hundreds of millions of dollars in public assistance fraud on his watch. It's partly because the evidence is irrefutable, but Jim also says the political handwriting is on the wall for last year's Democratic vice presidential nominee. They also point to new data showing California's $20 fast-food minimum wage is playing out exactly as critics predicted. The state lost 19,000 fast-food jobs over the past year while menu prices surged. Jim and Greg explain yet again why this policy cannot work but also question whether Democrats will ever learn. Finally, they rub their hands with glee as Rep. Evil Ervil LeBaron was a killer. He killed not only his brother Joel LeBaron, but had his wives kill rival Rulon Allred. He was known to have a hit list of others, including President Spencer Kimball of the LDS Church. Jacob Vidrine discusses these events and we’ll discuss the recent drug killings to a LeBaron family in Mexico. Check out our conversation… https://youtu.be/23RT8A5HEww Don't miss our other conversations with Jacob: https://gospeltangents.com/people/jacob-vidrine Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Except for book reviews, no content may be reproduced without written permission God's Executioner: How Ervil LeBaron's Quest for Authority Led to Murder and Stigma When discussing Mormon fundamentalism, the name LeBaron often conjures images of violence and notoriety, largely due to the actions of Ervil LeBaron. Though the family's original movement—the Church of the Firstborn—was rooted in unique priesthood claims tracing back to Nauvoo, Ervil's descent into murder and extremism permanently attached a “stigma” to the LeBaron name. Rise of the Violent Theologian Ervil LeBaron was one of the younger sons of Alma Dayer LeBaron (Dayer) and was initially associated with the Mexico branch of the family, led by his brother Joel LeBaron. Ervil was recognized early on as a key figure in establishing Joel's church, serving as a great theologian who authored the important pamphlet Priesthood Expounded. Joel rewarded his loyalty by appointing Ervil to the prestigious position of presiding patriarch over their Mexican church, the number two office under Joel. However, Ervil's rise was quickly marred by corruption. Reports indicated that Ervil began embezzling tithing funds and had a reputation for being predatory, attempting to get all the wives for himself and generally aggrandizing himself through his authority. By 1970, the controversy surrounding Ervil’s financial and moral conduct grew so severe that many members and leaders within Joel's church felt the need to curb his influence. Schism and the Birth of Violence In response to Ervil’s excesses, Joel made the drastic decision to strip Ervil of all authority in the church. Ervil, angered by the loss of his prestige and power, convinced himself that he was justified in killing Joel for taking away his authority. This marked the schism, leading Ervil to form his own group, the Church of the Lamb of God. Ervil’s actions escalated quickly into violence. He claimed a radical, theocratic justification for his subsequent murders: he asserted that he held the civil authority over the earth as “God’s appointed agent”. Based on this claim, Ervil believed he could kill anyone who was “treasonous against his government”. Ervil ordered Dan Jordan, one of his followers, to murder Joel LeBaron, which occurred in 1972. This assassination cut off the head of Joel's organization, as Joel died without appointing a successor to his highest office. Infamous Hit List After murdering his brother, Ervil was determined to eliminate any remaining opposition. He began threatening other fundamentalists and created a massive hit list. He was reportedly concerned about Verlan LeBaron, who had been appointed by Joel to replace Ervil as the presiding patriarch. Verlan was forced to go into hiding for nearly a decade to avoid Ervil’s retribution. To draw Verlan out of hiding, Ervil devised a calculated and shocking plan: he ordered the murder of Rulon Allred, the leader of the Allred Group (AUB). Ervil targeted Allred because Verlan had married into Rulon's family, believing Verlan would attend the funeral. Rulon Allred was assassinated in his doctor’s office in 1977. Ervil allegedly sent two of his wives to commit the crime, securing their commitment to his violent cause. Although Verlan was present at Allred’s funeral, the overwhelming police presence spooked Ervil’s followers, saving Verlan’s life. Ervil LeBaron's End and the Lingering Tragedy Ervil was eventually apprehended in Mexico, extradited, and convicted in 1980 for ordering Allred's death, receiving a life sentence in Utah State Prison. However, the violence did not end there. Ervil died in prison in 1981 in an apparent suicide. Tragically, just two days after Ervil's death was discovered, Verlan LeBaron—the man Ervil had spent years trying to kill—died in an auto accident in Mexico City. Several family members and observers suspected that this was not a coincidence, believing it was a sabotage hit ordered by Ervil's followers, who continued their deadly work even after Ervil's incarceration. Ervil's actions permanently “soil[ed] the whole [LeBaron]” family, transforming a unique movement rooted in secret Nauvoo priesthood claims into one synonymous with a twisted quest for power and serial murder. LeBarón and Langford Families Massacre Tragedy continues in Mexico as recently as 2019. Nine people were killed with some burned alive in a car (three women and six children, all of whom held dual US–Mexican citizenship).[3][4] They were members of the LeBaron and Langford families. A drug cartel is believed to be behind the attack.[5][6] In January 2025, a federal judge in Mexico ordered the Attorney General’s Office to investigate the massacre as an act of terrorism in Mexico. How do we find meaningful ways to connect one-on-one with our students? Teaching the gospel means more than delivering lessons—it means ministering to individuals, just as Christ did. Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin taught, “We are to be our brother's keeper. We cannot neglect this commission given by our Savior. We must be concerned for the one.” In this episode, professors Phil Allred and Camey Andersen explore how gospel teachers can fulfill this sacred charge. By reaching out with compassion, adapting their teaching to individual needs, and creating a space where everyone feels valued, teachers can help individuals feel the Savior's love, foster belonging, and inspire personal growth in the gospel. When we teach the one, we reflect the Savior's love, and that love can change lives.   Y Religion Presents: Gospel Teaching is a limited series podcast where, each week during summer 2025, expert teachers share insights that highlight key principles and practices of effective gospel teaching.

Join Jim and Greg for Wednesday's 3 Martini Lunch as they examine Major League Baseball's return to Atlanta for the All-Star Game four years after Democrats pressured the league to pull the event over Georgia's election integrity law. They also dig into the ridiculously slow wildfire recovery efforts in Los Angeles County and break down what could be a wild U.S. Senate race in Texas next year.First, they're glad to see the all-star game back in Georgia, where it was originally scheduled in 2021 before Commissioner Rob Manfred moved it under political pressure. Democrats claimed Georgia's election law was “Jim Crow 2.0,” but two election cycles later, record turnout disproves those claims. Jim and Greg ask whether Manfred, the media, or top Democrats will ever acknowledge how wrong they were, or apologize to Gov. Brian Kemp for likening him to segregationists and the confederacy?Next, they fume as little more than a hundred building permits have been issued in Los Angeles County in the six months since the devastating wildfires. Jim says this is a perfect example of how the blue state, big government approach to problems grinds progress to a halt and how Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom have failed. Greg offers insights on why the media won't criticize Newsom and Bass over this. Finally, they look ahead to the 2026 Texas U.S. Senate race, where new polling suggests Rep. Jasmine Crockett could dominate the Democratic primary if she runs. The GOP primary has plenty of its own drama as Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton battle for the nomination. Many in the MAGA base are disappointed in Cornyn but Paxton brings his own baggage, including a very public divorce that was just announced. Please visit our great sponsors:Stop putting off those doctors' appointments and go to https://zocdoc.com/3ML to find and instantly book a top rated doctor today.  If your business can't adapt in real-time, you're in a world of hurt.  Get the free e-book “Navigating Global Trade: 3 Insights for Leaders” from NetSuite by Oracle.  Download today at https://NetSuite.com/MARTINI No missed calls, no missed customers with OpenPhone. Zohran Mamdani didn't just beat Andrew Cuomo — he buried him. In a race many expected to be tight or favor Cuomo through ranked-choice tallies, Mamdani delivered a knockout in the first round. The final numbers weren't close: Mamdani pulled in 545,000 votes to Cuomo's 428,000. That's a blowout. And it happened despite Cuomo once polling at an absurd 80%. This wasn't just a campaign upset — it was the end of Cuomo's delusion that he could waltz back into New York politics on name recognition alone.Mamdani's campaign was sharp and technically sound. He mastered ranked-choice mechanics — building coalitions, securing second-choice support, and locking in endorsements from the Working Families Party and key progressive organizers. But he didn't just activate the left. He reached across neighborhoods and demographics, putting in real ground work. His message wasn't just ideological; it was practical and local — housing, transit, jobs. The kind of politics that wins you quiet votes in places people don't usually canvass. Now, Mamdani becomes a national proxy whether he wants to or not. Republicans will make him the new face of the Democratic Party, using his self-identified socialism as a scarecrow in swing states. But that spotlight also comes with opportunity. He's proven he can organize, message, and win. If Mamdani survives the general — and with Eric Adams now backed into a defensive fight, that's looking more likely — he could emerge as a new progressive standard-bearer not just for New York, but for the left nationwide.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. This was their first real moment of unity since a brutal 2024 GOP primary season. On the surface, they were aligned — joking, praising one another, presenting a strong front on immigration.Behind the smiles, though, Florida politics remains deeply tribal. There's always more going on under the surface. This wasn't just a unity photo-op; it was a strategic pivot. With the media focused on deportation centers and immigration enforcement, Democrats' messaging about Medicaid cuts and policy substance is being drowned out. Whether this is 5D chess from Trump or just savvy instinct, the outcome is the same — the right is driving the conversation. And here's my hunch: DeSantis is bound for a Trump administration role. Maybe not immediately, but certainly toward the end of his term. I don't know the exact position, but his re-alignment with Trump suggests he's looking for a path forward that keeps him in the national conversation.Allred's Return and the Uphill Battle in TexasColin Allred is back, launching another Senate bid in Texas, likely against Ken Paxton. His opening ad leans heavily on anti-corruption themes, clearly aimed at Paxton's scandals and ethical baggage. It's a smart choice if Paxton is the nominee. Voters don't forget public messes involving mistresses, real estate ties, and abandoned staff. That said, I'm not sold on Allred. His ad doesn't connect — it's too heavy on biography and too light on vision. People watching already know who he is. They're asking what he's going to do differently this time. He had a respectable run against Ted Cruz, but he didn't break through. And in a state like Texas, breaking through isn't optional — it's the baseline requirement.Texas Democrats face a structural problem. The party's progressives dominate primaries but struggle to produce general election winners. Allred's strength as a former football player was undercut by the trans sports issue. He doesn't read as a football guy, and he doesn't read as the kind of candidate who can split the difference between national party expectations and Texas voter realities. I'll be watching this race, but my expectations are tempered.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:03 - Interview with Kirk Bado00:29:16 - Update00:29:53 - Final NYC Mayoral Primary Results00:33:57 - Trump and DeSantis Reunite00:37:29 - Colin Allred for Texas Senate00:45:05 - Interview with Kirk Bado (con't)01:07:04 - Steelers Talk01:19:13 - Bonus Politics Question01:19:52 - Wrap-up This is a public episode.
