What's a cat story? People who have cats tend to be fanatical about them. They tell stories about how cute the cats can be, how spoiled they are, and how they drive their owners crazy.  If you're been on Facebook for more than 5 minutes, you realize that people can't get enough cat stories.  But there are 3 lessons a solopreneur from cat stories, even if you're not a cat person. Why do these stories have so much appeal? What do they do for the storyteller? This episode isn't typical, but it was fun to record and I hope you enjoy it, whether or not you like cats! An unexpected encounter

By gum we haven't had one of these since our own mother came on the show. Today it is our infinite pleasure to present to you the fantastic author/illustrator/cartoonist Ursula Murray Husted of, amongst other things, the marvelous graphic novel A Cat Story. A fan of the podcast, it seemed only fitting to ask her to suggest a title for the show today. Her choice? A book that honestly I've never seen before. Lulu and the Flying Babies is an obvious homage to, say, The Snowman by Raymond Briggs, and its creator started out by making comics before she made books for kids. And as it just so happens Ursula started out that way too! This is an absolutely fascinating example of a picture book working with this level of comic book paneling. And, of course, at some point we do include the line, "I had no idea how easy it was to decapitate a cat." Dusti Martin is a realtor out of Scottsdale, Arizona.  In this episode, we talk about how destructive cat and pet urine can be to a home and how difficult and expensive it can be to fix. Dusti shares several personal experiences she has had over the years. The first is her childhood experience watching her mom deal with rental properties. Her mom eventually had to evict a tenant who had over 100 cats in, and around, the property. This completely destroyed the home.  In the second experience, Dusti was a newly licensed Realtor. She decided to purchase her first foreclosure property to flip. It did not go as planned. Upon entering the home she discovered that a cat had been allowed to roam freely for a year and in the Arizona heat the damage was indescribable. Even in her own home she and her husband had an issue with their dog peeing on the floor.  It took several years before they finally figured out why. Noted business author and influencer Dorie Clark presented a thoughtful Ted Talk on December 21. We feel busy, she says, because we try to do the impossible, we want to feel "in demand," and (perhaps most importantly) we want to avoid dealing with something large or small. To illustrate the last point, Dorie illustrates with a story about her late cat, Gideon.  In this episode, I analyze why the story works. I would classify Dorie as an "Educator" archetype (although of course she has no awareness of my framework and likely wouldn't care). However, I'm. constantly surprised at how many successful business owners conform consistently to one of the story archetypes.   Here's a good example of a personal story that fits the brand of an Educator archetype, well-presented and successful on a number of dimensions.

I am going to be taking a couple weeks or so off of the podcast and Youtube channel. We recently put down a rescue cat. Though I've been expecting that one day the time would come due to her background it still hits hard.
