Carlin and Rebecca recently made a trip down to Rockville, Maryland for some socially distanced craft beer drinking. This well prepared brewery that started the Biermi website has been one the podcast hosts have been wanting to dig into.
When the pandemic came, True Respite was ready. Sort of. The owners had been marinating on the idea of a beer delivery service pre-covid but when the lockdown came, it became a no brainer. Thus, biermi.com was born. Brendan of True Respite joins Roche and Lashelle to discuss the impact the site has had on breweries and consumers across the country since it's launch and how it could be a game changer in how we get our local craft beer.

DC Beer's Richard speaks with two sets of guests on today's show: Brendan O'Leary and Brian O'Connor of True Respite Brewing Company talk about the new online beer marketplace Biermi; and Matt Humbard of Patent Brewing Company highlights his new Facebook Live events. Biermi Platform Continues to GrowDC Beer listeners may recall Richard's previous interview with Brendan and Bailey O'Leary when they discussed the launch of biermi.com, a new online marketplace that provides breweries a free-of-charge platform to connect with customers seeking beer deliveries and pickups. In this episode, Brendan and his close friend Brian recount the rapid launch of the Biermi platform. On Friday, March 13, Brendan gave Brian the go-ahead to develop Biermi. Brian spent 19 hours straight over the weekend to create the platform. By Monday, March 15, Maryland announced restaurant and brewery closings and, soon after, gave approval for beer deliveries. That same day, True Respite publicly launched Biermi. The Biermi online beer marketplace platform is picking up steam just one month after its launch. It now hosts 71 breweries across nearly 30 US states (and counting), has processed over $430,000 in revenues for the breweries, and (most importantly) has helped breweries retain cash flow and jobs.In the near term, Brian plans to continue to improve the functionality and offerings of the platform to help breweries and customers get through the COVID-19 pandemic. In the long term, Brendan and Brian hope to expand upon Biermi to offer brewery management functions (such as monitoring keg levels). They also believe the platform can be expanded to a number of other sectors, such as coffee houses, wineries, cideries, etc. In short, Biermi is here to stay.Matt Humbard Answers All of Your QuestionsMatt Humbard of the Patent Brewing Company is a staple of the DC craft brewery scene. He is well-known for his expertise in microbiology and the science of beer. Matt is now taking his knowledge to the people. Every Wednesday, he hosts an “Ask Me Anything” Facebook Live event on Patent Brewery Company's Facebook page. Topics normally focus on the brewing and distilling processes. If you are free on Wednesdays (and we know you are), check out Matt's live events! You can catch up on all the DC Beer Show episodes here, and subscribe to our weekly newsletter, the DC Beer Weekly Pour.
This week on the podcast we’re answering your questions! And if you have a question for us, we’d love for you to submit your own via HowToMoney.com/ask/ 1 - What is a cash management account and should I have one? 2 - Should I pay $9500 to exit a work contract early? 3 - Aside from a 529 plan, how else can I invest on behalf of my young son? 4 - Rule of 173, single family vs multi-family properties, and is my money safe with a brokerage like M1 and Vanguard? 5 - Not a question- but a great house hacking tip for a steady pipeline of qualified tenants. Carlin and Rebecca taste more shelf beers, but try a new approach to their tasting order. Two of the beers have Carlin a bit concerned, but are these negative feelings confirmed?
DC Beer's Adam and Richard visit Brendan and Bailey O'Leary and Kenny Allen in Montgomery County to talk about their up-and-coming brewery True Respite Brewing Company.A Long, Fraught Road to the Opening of True RespiteBrendan and Bailey began drawing up business plans for True Respite in 2014 while living in Colorado. When searching for a brewery location, they found that Montgomery County was a perfect spot: a “beer friendly” local government; few existing breweries; and close to family. Soon after, they met Kenny, a local brewer who was eager to join forces. Like many beer entrepreneurs, however, Brendan and Bailey had initial difficulties finding the right location for True Respite. Finally, in April 2018, just as they were planning to abandon their business plan, they found a willing landlord in an office park in Derwood, Maryland. A Growing Brewery with a Commitment to SustainabilityLess than two years later, True Respite is increasing production and expanding distribution. It employs a Blichmann 3.5-barrel system used primarily for experimental beers and a 15-barrel A.B.E system that can produce two brews in 10-12 hours. The brewery just bought two new 30-barrel fermenters and a canning line, looking to maximize production. It now distributes beer throughout Maryland, Delaware, and DC.Bailey is leading True Respite's sustainability efforts. She is instituting recycling and sustainable waste generation efforts and is looking into composting the brewery's waste. The brewery has also teamed up with the Rockville Watershed Committee to help keep the area's water clean-- while also brewing a new beer using locally foraged spicebush called the “Croydon Creek Spicebush Amber.”A Focus on Beer VarietyTrue Respite rarely brews the same beer twice. While focusing primarily on Hazy IPAs, its brewers are constantly creating new iterations to provide their customers with fresh, new brews. One recent beer is called “Hey Bud,” a fruity and complex Double Hazy IPA using fresh Strata and Mosaic hops. Another is the “Hazelnut Mocha Latta,” a balanced Imperial Milk Stout using Muntons light chocolate malt, lactose, and coffee, hazelnuts, and vanilla. You can check out True Respite's current beer listing here. Upcoming Local Events True Respite has some fun beer activities in the coming months. On Black Friday, it is putting up a biergarten at the Clarksburg Premium outlets. The brewery is also hosting the second annual Holiday Artist Fair on December 7. You can find a full calendar listing of events here. 00:00:00 - Thanks to the wonders of isotopic geochemistry, scientists have a found a link between the genocide of the native peoples of the Americas and a carbon drawdown that temporarily cooled global temperatures (Open access paper here: Koch et al. 2019). Doesn’t seem like a great option for thwarting climate change, but good to know regardless. 00:21:45 - Ben wanted something interesting and managed to find Grace Brand Peanut Punch, which he loves. Patrick returns to his roots with a little Gentleman Jack, which gives Ryan a chance to expound on bourbon vs. TN whiskey. Yay. Ryan is also in need of some True Respite, which happens to be the name of the brewery that made the beer Alpin Haus, which he is enjoying. 00:30:08 - For decades there have been concerns about growing human populations, but a recent book, Empty Planet: The Shock of Global Population Decline, explores the idea that as the developing world continues to develop population growth might stall or even reverse. What happens if we actually run out of people? Many sci-fi scenarios and references are discussed. 00:50:52 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like population trends, they both require a minimum replacement rate to be stable. First, we have a BSso thesis to confer to Patron Bradley S. who has done the work and submitted: It’s the end of the world as we know, but do you feel fine? Meta-analysis of happiness indices regarding impending climate-mediated anti-Malthusian events. Thanks, Bradley! Next, Ben has an update from Drake H. on his (slightly erroneous) claims regarding coyote pack dynamics and the role of carnivore conservation and hunting. Last, Kyle W. wants to know what’s up with t-shirts and other merch? Listen in and find out! More cool rewards await you if you decide to support us on our Patreon! P.S. We didn’t realize when we picked this theme that it was already the title of a book.
