I was going through the motions of selecting songs for the planned two new release episodes for November, and I quickly realized that I had way too many songs! What a problem to have, right? So for the first time, this month’s new release series will be three full episodes! Yes, I know earlier this year I had some leftovers for a third episode, but I’m talking about three full shows of new tunes!  Tonight’s episode, like most “part 1’s”, is primarily devoted to friends of the show. These are artists and labels that routinely send me their newest tunes. Like Numb Surprise, who have sent me tracks each and every month this year. Or the latest Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin double cover series, where he and a fellow artist cover each other. There’s also the latest from power pop legend Jim Basnight, a new Big Stir release, and even some baseball-related tracks from our buddies Vista Blue. Plus there’s quite a few new power pop faves, and a nice batch of garage, punk, and indie rock. Oh yeah, and a deep dive into that new Husker Du live box set. What tracks did you did? "Hammer + Echo" Getting their start in the early '80s, the Kilkenny Cats were one of the most fascinating bands at a time when there were a lot of fascinating bands around. Formed by the North Carolina born Tom Cheek, who had relocated to Athens, Georgia for college, the Kilkenny Cats played a dark and moody blend of post-punk and psychedelia that still, after all these years, feels decidedly timeless. Here's what I mean by that--sometimes when you listen to a band you can hear the years they existed. We won't name. names, but you know what I mean--however, when it comes to the Kilkenny Cats, their music was so singular, they elude the timeline. Although their fellow city dwelling comrades ranged from REM to Pylon to Love Tractor, they were their own thing. Alive with jangling guitars, prowling basslines, foreboding drums and sonorous vocals, the Kilkenny Cats' music was awash in mystery and maybe that's why all these years later, they still sound as pressingly relevant as ever. They were a beloved live act, they had a deal with Twin/Tone, played shows with REM and Husker Du and then? Well, then decades of silence. Why? Well, that's what we're here to figure out and Tom Cheek walks us through it all. Spoiler alert: The 'Cats are back and more music in addition to the wonderful expanded reissue of 1988's Hammer + Echo, will be coming. I'll let him explain. www.propellorsoundrecordings.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

As a rule I generally don’t go to class reunions. They’re just too weird for me, and I’m not great at the “what are you doing these days” types of conversations. But a few weeks ago was my 40th year college reunion, and a handful of great old friends convinced me to attend some of the festivities. Truthfully, I have to thank those old pals, as I ended up having a great time. Sure, my old man memory caused me to not remember some of these folks but I did my best. It also caused me to reminsce on the music of that era. I was the music director of KAUR my senior year, and it was such a great period in my life. Some of my favorite bands were putting out their greatest music, and almost every week there seemed to be potnetial new faves. The combo of this sort of reminiscing and the upcoming release of a live Husker Du box set, 1985: The Miracle Year, made the decision to honor that year on a Ledge episode an easy one. I do think of my formative years a lot – and I think this started to happen more when my parents died in 2022. Music started to become huge for me around 1976 when I was 8 and started playing the cello…but I did have some music differences of opinion let's say as I got a bit older and started to  listen to “bang and thump music” as my dad used to call it  – I really struggled to reconcile what I now know is a beautiful instrument with the Ramones, who were changing my life and pulling me in the other direction – it was like I had an alter ego. I mean, it's not a big deal in the whole scheme of things, but you know, each to their own.  Anyway, I just devoured more and more music – bands like Killing Joke, Siouxsie, Au Pairs, Minutemen, Husker Du - and as I found more and more stuff through, mainly listening to Peel and other local radio – like Steve Barker's On The Wire and Tony Michaelides on Piccadilly or just taking a chance based on whether I liked the sleeve, I started to get into more of the avant garde, off kilter, skrunky, weird – Neubauten, Alien Sex Fiend, Bush Tetras, The Fall, Butthole Surfers and then there was a bit of a lightbox moment with Tackhead's Hard Left around 86, I think before Public Enemy came along and changed things again. There was also another band who completely flummoxed, intrigued and excited me - and that was Fini Tribe. There was the underground and there was Fini Tribe. I had no idea how to describe them. They didn't sound like anyone else. I had no idea what they looked like. And I didn't know much about them. And I had no idea what to expect. And of course, we lived in an age of genre obsession – still do - so they were real genre party poopers. So, by the time I was listening to Splash Care or Detestimony, there were frequent shouts of “turn that shit off”. I was very used to this. Especially from the fella that liked Dire Straits. But Fini Tribe awakened an excitement in me – listening to them was like Alice Through The Looking Glass stepping into another world that felt as distant and exciting to me as when I got those first Killing Joke records… I never got to see them live so to now have a wonderful compilation of their 1982-1987 years called The Sheer Action of Fini Tribe, diligently and lovingly brought to life by the band with tracks I've never heard before including some live tracks, well, it's well worth the wait. This is such an exhilarating and fascinating insight with Christopher Connelly and Davie Miller.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Last week’s look at what’s been spinning on the Hudson turntable was so fun that I thought we’d do it again. This week’s version, though, differs in that it also includes some digital treats. The announcement from the Numero Group of the upcoming Husker Du box, 1985 The Miracle Year was a no-brainer when it was accompanied by four more new sneak peaks. And I couldn’t stop myself from playing soem of the previously-released rarities that will again feature on the upcoming box set version of The Replacements’ Let It Be. But there are also a couple of great compilation albums that deserved some notice. First off, there’s the latest free release from our friends at Rum Bar Records. The Summer School Sampler features 34 tracks of brand new or recently-released material, and like I said it’s free!  And the 15th volume of Bored Teenagers compiles rare British punk singles from 1976-83! Along with these fun tunes I also aired quite a few more faves that have recently hit my turntable. What’s your favorite from this week’s show? We continue to tick off the bucket list, player by player. In the wake of a trip to Minneapolis for the Caterwaul Festival, we chat with Minnesota's favorite son, Greg Norton - who filled his time in-between Hüskers tours as a chef, eventually opening an eponymous restaurant. After going 14 years without touching a bass, and surviving a health scare, Greg is back in the driver's seat: he's got his rejiggered super-trio UltraBomb; a Greg Norton + Buddies tour in which fellow travelers can jump on stage and sing the Hüskers song of their choice; and the debut of his very own signature bass!   We also announce the winner of our IdiotBox Effects Blower Box Deluxe pedal - tune in to find out if you're gonna be bathing your tone in distortion.   Hüsker Dü on Bandcamp (https://huskerdu.bandcamp.com/music) and Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/artist/16bN8mhtDFdegWbg0z3s10?si=4Aycdgk-QamjQk43e_fdxg)    UltraBomb on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/ultrabombmusic/), Bandcamp (https://ultrabomb.bandcamp.com/) and Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/artist/4u2NU0NKwALURZY2qvtYQb?si=_JkfJPB2RAKRD1yT7DmauA)   Greg Norton Tour info (https://www.songkick.com/artists/2924031-greg-norton/calendar)   Hüsker Dü Live in London 1985 (includes a great version of "Diane") (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CphIHzsxduY)   UltraBomb's YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXttjijPvr-QXDwevC5Iqdg)   Caterwaul Festival in Minneapolis (go next year!) Talkhouse Podcast

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got an absolute legend of the punk and indie-rock worlds in conversation with a relatively newer voice who's making some great music, too: Bob Mould and Will Anderson. Bob Mould got his start in the late 1970s with the Minneapolis-born punk / post-punk band Husker Du, a trio that was at the tip of the spear of incredible new sounds. After that band ran out of jet fuel in the late 1980s, Mould embarked on a solo career and also created the band Sugar, itself a touchstone outfit. Mould has released a total of 15 solo albums over the years, and there's not a dud in the bunch. His latest is a tuneful, melodic set of ragers called Here We Go Crazy, which he once again made with his ace rhythm section, Jon Wurster and Jason Narducy. He's toured a bunch in support of the record with those guys, but his next set of dates—in August and September, check bobmould.com for details—will find him playing solo-electric, which is also a powerful way to experience these songs. Check out the title track of Here We Go Crazy right here. The other half of today's conversation is Will Anderson, who's been making music for the past few years under the name Hotline TNT—sometimes by himself, sometimes with a rotating band of players. His first album under the name, Nineteen in Love, was recorded by himself during COVID, all in GarageBand. His third—and second for Jack White's Third Man Records—feels much more like a full-band affair: It's more fleshed out and expansive. Hotline TNT has frequently been called a shoegaze band, but it's a tag that Anderson is quick to refute, at least a little bit: In this conversation, he says that his shoegaze knowledge pretty much begins and ends with My Bloody Valentine. Whatever you call it, its swirls and layers feel pretty damn good right now. Check out a little bit of “Julia's War” from the latest Hotline TNT album, Raspberry Moon. In this great chat, Bob and Will talk about Bob's recent commencement speech at his alma mater and they also chat about the proper construction of an album, playing overseas for the first time, Bob's Super Bowl appearance and much more. Enjoy! Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Will Anderson and Bob Mould for chatting. Send us a textFrankie and Kelly Maxwell stop by the show to discuss how the band came together, their father and his love of music, their new EP, Red Shelter, sobriety, and more. *****Shurr Jr is a family power trio that consists of a guitarist/vocalist, Nick Maxwell,  Drums, Frankie Maxwell, and Kelly Maxwell on bass. The siblings' father, Frank Maxwell, was an Omaha music legend who played guitar in the band Fifth of May in the ‘80s and ‘90s. No doubt, the apples didn't fall far from the tree. They're a band made up of two brothers and a sister from Sioux Falls.  Their father was a well-known musician in Omaha, but he died a few years ago.  Since they were a very musical family, the kids decided to do a band as a tribute to their dad...  The name "Shurr Jr." is a takeoff on one of their dad's favorite sayings, "Sure, Junior" as a replacement for "Yep, okay."The name of the EP is also a nod to their father, too... He wanted to name a band or album "Red Shelter," but he passed away before he could make that happen, so the kids in Shurr Jr. decided to name that album as another tribute to him.Musically, they take elements of Pixies, Elliott Smith, Husker Du, Avett Brothers, the Replacements, and Title Fight.  This is the new single/video, "Ink": https://youtu.be/u1-p5WtdQ9o?si=lEal3FveTCWIiMcz*******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers

With Record Store Day 2025 in the books, we continue to feature some of the talented recording artists who make the records; and this week we have one of the all-time greats. Bob Mould has enjoyed a long and illustrious career in which he has frequently been the guitarist and singer fronting superb rock trios, starting in Minnesota with the seminal '80s indie band Hüsker Dü, and Sugar in the '90s. Bob has continued to record as a solo singer/songwriter who consistently delivers edgy and emotional guitar rock, which brings us to the topic of today's episode, Mould's 15th solo album, the recently released Here We Go Crazy (Granary Music / BMG) which finds Bob's signature blistering guitar and urgent vocals once again backed by his powerful and long-serving rhythm section of Jason Narducy on bass, and friend of the show, Jon Wurster on the drums. The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton.  For the most up-to-date news about all things RSD, visit RecordStoreDay.com   Please consider subscribing to our podcast wherever you get podcasts, and tell your friends, we're here every week and we love making new friends.

The previous episode presented artists from the 50s, 60s, and 70s that deserves to be inducted. This week we handle the 80s. Take a look at the 33 artists I present on this broadcast. You can’t deny that this would make the Hall a lot more fun. Imagine Jello Biafra’s induction speech for the Dead Kennedys! Or the remarks Henry Rollins would make for Black Flag. Or the emotions that would erupt for the late Shane MacGowan and the rest of The Pogues. How about the ensuing jam session that would involve Nick Cave with members of X, The Cramps, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, and the Fleshtones? Of course, any Hall that I curate would have to include The Replacements! In fact, just insert them into the building and all of my complaints would immediately end. (Or would it?) We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) -The Blue Nile, Billy Bragg, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Celtic Frost, Cocteau Twins, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, Julian Cope, Dio, Echo & The Bunnymen, Everything But The Girl, Husker Du, Iron Maiden, Killing Joke, Kenny Loggins, Manowar, Metallica, Nena, Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder, Prefab Sprout, Prince, The Psychedelic Furs, Ratt, Lionel Richie, Rockwell, Sandie Shaw, The Smiths, Swansway, Thompson Twins, Ultravox, and Van Halen!Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7JDSRATZtdBU5yJtD4zbFM?si=256411ee4df7417aFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. Blake Smith and his rock band Figdish from the 90's Chicago scene has never taken things too seriously; never been careerists, and in fact went out of their way to indulge in hijinx and sabotage, despite ending up with 2 hugely influential records and a solid major label record deal. This was the band that came of age with Varuca Salt, Local H and Smoking Popes with comparisons to Replacements and Husker Du that intentionally played a set of Neil Diamond covers at a label showcase in front of A&R from all the biggies. The same band that threw a sandwich off their hotel balcony and covered Marilyn Manson and his crew in hoagie. Blake Smith and band mate Mike Wilison went on to start the electronica based project Caviar with pretty solid success with lots of TV and film placement. But its the music that was written before they lost their record deal with Polygram that is the focus of a new Figdish release, the first in over 25 years, called Feels Like The Very First Two Times (Forge Again). These apocryphal songs complete the journey of this band and round out a top flight collection of powerful chicago indierock of the 90's scene that left a lasting impact on rock today, despite the hijinx and sabotage.

Buckle up everyone—it's milestone time! This episode of For Songs is the nice, big, round number of 70! That's right, 7-0! And helping me celebrate is the most popular guest I've had—Minneapolis singer/songwriter/guitarist Dan Murphy. A co-founding member of one of Minnesota's biggest rock band Soul Asylum, Dan is making his third appearance on the show. In this episode of For Songs Singles, Dan discusses the first single from his new band's forthcoming album. The song is Speedway, the band is the Scarlet Goodbye, and the album is El Camino Adios, set for release in January. The band's second album, El Camino Adios marks a departure of sorts for Dan and his songwriting partner Jeff Arundel. As exemplified by the undeniably catchy Speedway, El Camino Adios is a character/story driven album, inspired by everyday life in rural America. Dan talks how he and Jeff approached the album and made a conscious effort to evoke stories and write outside the first person. Dan also details how a few years of playing live together brought a greater cohesion to the songs. So sit back, crack a beer, and enjoy Dan's third appearance on the show!
