In this episode of Beer Travelers, we visit Brooklyn, New York, with its frenetic pace to its quiet neighborhood bars, and all the haze, lager, and sour beers you could ever want. Brooklyn was once one of the world's great brewing centers. Home to nearly 50 breweries in 1900, the borough brewed a ton of beer under brands names like Schaefer, Rheingold, and many others lost to history. But that came to an end by the mid-1970s and the borough's mashtuns went silent for the next 20 years. That was until 1987 when Steve Hindy Tom Potter decided to open up their own brewery in a warehouse district in Williamsburg. Named after the borough it inhabited, Brooklyn Brewery would go on to spread the word of craft beer around the globe and become one of the early pioneers of the resurgent modern American beer scene. It took a while for brewing to catch on again in Brooklyn but slowly others opened, including Kelso and Sixpoint. And then there was the third wave of craft brewers, with names such as Other Half, Threes, and Finback. Today, Brooklyn's beer scene is top notch and the borough's bars and breweries make for an easy and exciting night out. After falling in love with it after my first visit, I trek down to Brooklyn a couple times a year including in December for an annual holiday themed pub and brewery crawl. It remains a favorite place to visit and drink and I look forward to exploring it with two great local experts.Courtney Iseman is a freelance writer who has written engaging pieces for Vinepair, Craft Beer and Brewing, as well as her own newsletter, Hugging the Bar. She's a compelling voice in beer and has written extensively about everything from diversity and inclusion to her favorite local Brooklyn pubs, including about the bar owned by our second guest.Chris Maestro is a DJ, avid record collector, educator, and also the co-owner with his wife of Bierwax, a beer bar with outposts in both Brooklyn and Queens. The Prospect Heights based bar focuses on great beer and music, played analog style from one of Chris's thousands of vinyl records that line the back of the bar. He was in the beer business before opening his own shop and is a Brooklyn native. It's a big borough and there's a lot of ground to cover in this episode. So let's get started with our tour of Brooklyn, New York, with writer Courtney Iseman and publican Chris Maestro. This Episode is Sponsored by:Pub Culture BeercationsStop living vicariously through other people's social media posts and get out and make some memories of your own! Sixpoint Brewery talks Cicerone certification, crispy lagers, and nuclear submarines Sixpoint Brewery first came to recognition for their bright Resin DIPA. As the name implies, this isn't a hazy and fruity beer. Resin packs a punch of pine and citrus to quench your thirst for that West Coast goodness. Education and Training Manager Max Finnance wants you to enjoy Resin, and all your beers, a bit more and he joins us this week to talk about just how to do that. Before his life in beer Finnance was stationed on a nuclear submarine and tells us some of the science background he gained has helped in his brewery life. He's a certified Advanced Cicerone as well as a BJCP Certified beer judge. Read, he knows his beer. He admits that this type of in-depth education isn't for everyone but if you're a passionate beer fan you can still learn a bit more about your beers, and how to drink them. Sure, we all think we know how to drink, but do we really? Some of the classes he teaches are designed to educate retailers, distributors, and employees on the art of beer. How to properly store, serve, and sip your brews. Finnance enjoys traveling and sharing his knowledge but with the Covid Curse upon us he's taken his classes online. Hazy IPAs still rule when it comes to questions he gets about beer, but he'd also like everyone to know more about lagers. There's a huge variety out there well beyond the Crispy Boy pilsners but lagers still have a reputation with many people as clear and light beers. If you're in a larger area it's likely there's a local brewery brewing up a variety of lagers, so take a trip and see what's on tap. As a silver lining to the Covid cloud, Sixpoint has been able to take advantage of some temporary laws to host an outdoor tasting room. A more permanent taproom (or two) is in the works, although there have been some delays due to landlord issues. Follow Sixpoint on social media to get the scoop as thing develop. The four hop varieties are Tetnanger, Spalt, Hallertauer and Saaz.Subcategory: Contemporary American-Style Pilsener – Contemporary versions will exhibit hop and aroma attributes typical of a wide range of American hop varieties, including citrus, fruit-like or others.(Description courtesy of All About Beer Magazine)Pilsner styles of beer originate from Bohemia in the Czech Republic. They are medium- to medium-full bodied and are characterized by high carbonation and tangy Czech varieties of hops that impart floral aromas and a crisp, bitter finish. The hallmark of a fresh pilsner is the dense, white head. The alcohol levels must be such as to give a rounded mouthfeel, typically around 5 percent ABV. Classic pilsners are thoroughly refreshing, but they are delicate and must be fresh to show their best. Great pilsners are technically difficult to make and relatively expensive to produce.-Color - Straw to gold-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Medium-low to medium- Up to 25% corn and/or rice in the grist should be used.-Hop Aroma and Flavor and Bitterness Medium to high, exhibiting attributes typical of noble-type hops -Body: Medium-low to medium-ABV: 4.9%-6.0% - higher ABV than other Pilsners-Glassware: Pilsner Glass - Typically a tall, slender and tapered 12-ounce glass, shaped like a trumpet at times, that captures the sparkling effervesces and colors of a Pils while maintaining its head. Craft Beer News – 11/23/18Artisanal Brewing Ventures Execs Discuss ‘100 percent’ Acquisition of Sixpoint BreweryAfter four years of discussions with Sixpoint Brewery founder Shane Welch, Artisanal Brewing Ventures (ABV) finally completed a deal to purchase 100 percent of his Brooklyn-based craft brewery this week.Even though ABV had been courting Sixpoint for several years, it wasn’t until this summer when negotiations really began to heat up, John Coleman, CEO of ABV, told Brewbound. As the deal came together, ABV — which is backed by family office Ulysses Management and was formed in 2016 via the merger of Victory Brewing and Southern Tier Brewing — turned to Wells Fargo to help finance the acquisition.Coleman declined to share specific financial terms of the transaction.Unlike ABV’s partnerships with Victory and Southern Tier, whose founders have remained involved in the businesses they started, Welch is exiting the company he founded in 2004 to focus on other “craft beer-related businesses,” including a smartphone app that helps facilitate direct-to-consumer sales at breweries.Although ABV’s past strategy has focused on retaining its partner breweries’ founders, the company decided it needed to be more flexible when it came to Sixpoint, Paul Barnett, managing director of Ulysses Management, told Brewbound.“Shane has a lot of other outside interests, which he’s passionate about,” he said. “He struggled with the idea of the obligations that are inherent in being an active founder partner like Bill [Covaleski] and Ron [Barchet of Victory] and Phin [DeMink of Southern Tier].”Now, Sixpoint brewmaster and chief product officer Eric Bachli will lead the company. Last year, Welch hired Bachli away from popular Massachusetts craft brewery Trillium Brewing.According to Coleman and Barnett, Sixpoint was an attractive acquisition target for ABV due to its geographical presence in New York City, where the brewery sells more than half of its volume, as well as its alignment within the Sheehan Family network of wholesalers.“We think there’s a lot of growth potential in metro New York as well as all of the surrounding areas,” Coleman said. “And from a brewing standpoint, the brands are all very complimentary with Southern Tier and Victory brands.”According to Coleman, Sixpoint is on pace to produce 55,000 barrels of beer by the end of 2018. The company did not report production figures to the Brewers Association last year, but in 2016 it reported production of 74,500 barrels. Finally, Barnett and Coleman said ABV isn’t done buying, and they mentioned a focus on breweries located in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and Southeast regions of the U.S..“The east of the Mississippi geography we find is really an attractive market,” Barnett said.TTB Accepts Offer for Trade Practice ViolationsTTB and Elgin Beverage Agree to $325,000 Offer in CompromiseThe Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) yesterday announced the acceptance of a $325,000 offer in compromise from Illinois distributor Elgin Beverage Co. for alleged violations of tied house provisions.Elgin, based in Bartlett, about 35 miles from Chicago, distributes products from Constellation Brands, Pabst Brewing and FIFCO USA, among others. In a press release, the TTB said Elgin had “aided and abetted another industry member in the use of a third party to pay retailers to carry and promote their products.”The pay-to-play scheme, the TTB argued, gave Elgin an “unfair advantage” in the marketplace.“TTB remains committed to putting an end to anti-competitive practices that hurt law-abiding businesses and prevent consumers from enjoying a wide selection of products,” the agency wrote.Earlier this month, the TTB issued an industry circular reminding alcohol beverage companies that it was “committed to ensuring a fair and level playing field nationwide.” In that announcement, the TTB noted that it had “significantly intensified” its enforcement (which began in 2017), and that it was focused on snuffing out “exclusive outlet, tied house, commercial bribery, and consignment sale violations.”“The high incidence of unlawful activities and deliberate concealment of such activities raise serious concerns,” the agency wrote. “These activities are of particular significance because of their nationwide occurrence and their impact on trade and fair competition.”In May, the TTB accepted a $900,000 offer in compromise from Warsteiner Importers Agency Inc. — “the largest single offer in compromise for trade practice violations” ever accepted by the agency. The Ohio-based company was accused of engaging in illegal tied house, commercial bribery and exclusive outlet violations committed in order to compromise a retailer’s independence from January 1, 2015, through April 19, 2018.BA Chief Economist: Brewery Visits are Good for Beer Industry HealthIn his latest blog post, Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson said “getting people into breweries is a good thing for the beer industry.”His rationale? Recent Nielsen CGA data that suggests beer drinkers who visit breweries drink more beer, while those who do not visit breweries drink less.Conversely, 24 percent of more than 4,300 consumers who hadn’t visited a brewery in the last year and were also asked about their consumption habits said they were drinking more beer, while 28 percent said they were drinking less.“Now, as someone who cares about good analysis, I won’t pretend that this means going to a brewery is causing people to drink more beer,” Watson wrote. “The causality might run the other way: people who are drinking more beer might be seeking out breweries.”Nevertheless, Watson said all players throughout the three-tier system need to “actively try to recreate the reasons people go to breweries.”His pitch to beer distributors, some of whom have expressed concerns about the proliferation of brewery taprooms?“If these beer lovers are drinking a typical amount, their beer consumption is going up far more than at-the-brewery sales alone, suggesting once again that brewery visits spill out into the wider market and help build brand beer,” he wrote.Massachusetts to Commence Recreational Cannabis Sales on November 20The first legal recreational cannabis sales east of the Mississippi will occur next Tuesday in Massachusetts, The Boston Globe reported Friday. In a press release, the state’s Cannabis Control Commission announced that it had approved two companies — Cultivate Holdings, LLC and New England Treatment Access, LLC – to begin selling marijuana and marijuana products.“This signal to open retail marijuana establishments marks a major milestone for voters who approved legal, adult-use cannabis in our state,” commission chairman Steven J. Hoffman said via a press release. “To get here, licensees underwent thorough background checks, passed multiple inspections, and had their products tested, all to ensure public health and safety as this new industry gets up and running.”It took lawmakers and regulators more than two years to finally approve cannabis sales after Massachusetts voters passed a 2016 ballot initiative making recreational cannabis legal.Source of News Stories: Brewboundhttps://www.brewbound.com/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHSubscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. Podcast 31: Preshow Beers : Alex - Nobody's Robot, Nick - Warm Hand Splash Another low-key week for us, but we're back and we're going to entertain you. Jake talked about his adventures on Hanover St. and Alex has opinions on cupcakes and wants to know everyone's take on the word moist. We discuss at length the correct amount of icing on cupcakes and our other favorite desserts. Moving back to beer, we hit on what adjuncts can be used in beers and how over used some flavors are. Some of these flavors are winners and some are stinkers. Coming into the holiday season, we're gonna have some stellar stouts and Christmas ales. We're gonna focus next week on trying some of these styles and commenting on these to gear up for the holidays. Our hatred of pumpkin spices and pumpkin beers is strong. Overall we're looking for balance and still drinking a beer from these flavors. Brew Gentlemen released Double Mex on Sunday. Were you able to get your hands on this special release? We'll be tasting this one on Christmas Eve probably. We talk about traveling for beer and what we factor into going to these places that are further away than our normal stops. In that conversation we hit on Full Pint and Brew Gentlemen and Jake and Alex relive California with Russian River. Beer #1: Jake - Red Currant Fated Farmer - Trillium Brewing (American Wild Ale - 6.7%) Jake raved about this beer. Excited to see how this series evolves. Very sour and heavily carbonated. Beer #1: Alex/Nick/Sara - 120 Minute IPA (2015) - Dogfishhead (Triple IPA - 18-25%) Alex was shocked by how smooth this beer was. Very malty and cloudy, but not hazy. The holy grail for hopheads does not disappoint. There's no way to guess that the ABV is as high as it is. Brew News! Sixpoint was acquired by Southern Tier/Victory Beer. Steel City Beer Wholesalers are bringing Hoof Hearted Brewing, Rotunda Brewing and Maine Beer Co to Pittsburgh. Beer #2: Nick/Alex Etch - Dancing Gnome (IPA - 6.6%) Much better batch this time. We're drinking Christmas beers next week! Check back then!

In Ep#11 Tony and Eddie swoon over Christopher Nolan's space epic, Interstellar. Of course they still had things to complain about. They talk about obscure 90's references, bad robots, and they do that while sampling beers from 21st Amendment and Sixpoint breweries.
Eric and Dan try out Tiger-Tiger Ice Cream Beard Oil and Balm from Universal Beard, based out of Victoria, British Columbia (on the "craggy southern end" of Vancouver Island according to Wikipedia). Apparently the dessert blend of orange sherbet, vanilla ice cream and a ribbon of licorice is a Canadian staple. Evan suggests j.views' latest 401 Days for the album review, bringing some chill electronic hipster flair to the show. Finally everyone drinks Sixpoint's Bengali IPA, and Eric and Evan try out some additional beer flavors from the Sixpoint Samplifier mix pack. As an added bonus, Dan and Eric review the MoGuard "mustache guard drink attachment," from Venice Beach, California, which is also available for purchase on the Universal Beard website. Hashtag of the week is #fuckhashtags. Post-Show Notes: We mention Universal Beard's prices seem to have been reduced since we first looked at the site/received the product. However, the prices were actually adjusted to U.S. dollars, so the products might not be as reduced in priced as we imply (but keep an eye out for sales). Also we learned that the Tiger-Tiger Ice Cream scent has less licorice in it now than before.
Mike and Jeff celebrate Cinco de Mayo by drinking Sixpoint beers during a Sixpoint brewery spotlight. The second half of the show, Mike makes Jeff and Goose play Buy or Sell on various craft beer topics.

Season 2, Episode 41 – This week, beers from Sixpoint Brewery, a super-yummy hoppy pale ale from our local friends, Wicks Brewing Company, sprinkles of Almanac Brewing Company’s Citra Sour, and some in-depth homebrew discussion on Quad recipe formulation. This week on the show, we’re taking a trip to Brooklyn, New York (we’re not really there, duh) to get some of that sweet Sixpoint Brewery action! Wicks Brewing Company – Paladin Pale Ale But first, we start with a new segment on the show, the 4B Mailbag! To accompany the Mailbag segment, we’re drinking a delicious beer from a local favorite of ours, and many in the Inland Empire of southern California, Wicks Brewing Company’s Paladin Pale Ale. This beer is Wicks’ first official bottle release that has made its way to shelves, and it’s superb. A super-hoppy and danky pale ale that has the punch of an IPA with the ABV of a pale ale. This is no session ale, folks…it’s a pale ale, and it’s delicious. Sixpoint Brewery Beers Next up are the Sixpoint Brewery beers. Thanks to 4B friend and Patreoneer, Scott McElhone, we were able to get our hands on three six-packs of Sixpoint brews that aren’t distributed in southern California. We’re trying to branch out, people! First is The Crisp. John thinks this is one of the coolest beer names for a lager, and the beer inside of this Sixpoint brew does not fall short of its name. It’s quite tasty and damn near perfect. Next is Sweet Action. We didn’t quite figure out what this beer was, exactly (turns out it’s a cream ale), but it did spur some conversation regarding guitars, bands, and Wayne’s World. Finally is the much sought after Resin. For an east coast IPA, this beer delivers. We beer drinkers in California often criticize east coast IPA for its over the top malt character and seemingly lackluster hop profile. This beer is not that. It quite good and unique for the style. The malts are definitely there, but they take a middle seat to the wonderful hop profile. It’s a solid IPA that’s worthy of the hype that precedes it. We wrap up the show with Citra Sour from Almanac Beer Co. while discussing possible beer recipes for a Quad that Greg wants to age in a rye whiskey barrel he acquired from Re:Find Distillery. Quadruple style beers can be difficult to brew. Barrel aging can also be quite difficult. We try to put it all in perspective. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
