The Syrian Army has made sweeping gains against Kurdish-led forces in northeast Syria, dealing a major blow to Syrian Kurdish autonomy and handing victories to both Damascus and neighbouring Turkey. With Washington abandoning its backing of the militia alliance, the Syrian Democratic Forces now face disbandment or renewed fighting. Within days, Syrian government troops swept aside the SDF and took control of vast areas of territory. The offensive followed the collapse of talks on integrating the SDF into the Syrian Army. Washington's shift proved decisive. “The game changer was the American permission, the American green light to [Syrian President] Ahmed al-Sharaa. That opened the door to Damascus launching the offensive,” said Syria expert Fabrice Balanche, of Lyon University. The SDF had been a key US ally in the fight against Islamic State and relied on American support to deter an attack by Damascus. But with Islamic State now weakened and Sharaa joining Washington's alliance against the group, the Kurds lost their leverage. “Trump viewed the relationship as temporary, not a true alliance,” said Balanche, a municipal councillor with France's rightwing Republicans party. French journalist arrested in Turkey while covering pro-Kurdish protest released US withdrawal and rapid collapse As Washington ended its support, many Arab tribes quit the Kurdish-led coalition. They aligned with Damascus, allowing government forces to advance quickly in Arab-majority areas. Several prisons holding Islamic State members fell to government control, with reports that hundreds escaped. Fears of wider instability pushed Washington to broker a ceasefire between the SDF and the Syrian government. Under the deal, SDF forces are to disband and merge into Syrian government units, a move backed by Ankara. Turkey has strongly supported the Damascus offensive. It accuses Kurdish elements within the SDF of links to the PKK, which has fought a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state. “Turkey is certainly behind all these operations,” said international relations professor Huseyin Bagci of Ankara's Middle East Technical University. “The Turkish defence minister, General Chief of Staff, has recently been in Syria. So there is probably a common action.” Turkey blocks calls for regime change in Iran as protests escalate Kurdish tensions inside Turkey The assault has triggered protests by members of Turkey's large Kurdish minority in support of Syrian Kurds. It has also coincided with talks between the pro-Kurdish Dem Party, the Turkish government and the outlawed PKK aimed at ending the conflict. The PKK declared a ceasefire and pledged to disband last year, but talks stalled months ago. Ankara has blamed the deadlock on the SDF's refusal to join the PKK's disarmament commitment. The fighting in Syria could deepen Kurdish disillusionment with the peace process, political analyst Sezin Oney, of the Politikyol news portal, warned. “They pictured this peace process as a big win for the PKK that finally all these rights, all the political rights, cultural rights, everything would be recognized, and a new era would begin," Oney said. "It's not that, and it won't be that there is nobody in Turkey on the side of the government who was envisioning such a change or anything of the sort." The Dem Party had few options left. “The only thing Dem can do is rally the Kurdish public in Turkey, and it is just going to be disbursed,” Oney added. Syrian army offensive in Aleppo draws support from Turkey Risk of wider bloodshed Turkish police have broken up many pro-SDF protests using water cannon and gas, carrying out hundreds of arrests. French journalist Raphael Boukandoura was detained and later released, in a move rights groups said was meant to intimidate foreign media. Without US intervention, Damascus would push further into Kurdish-held areas, Balanche warned. “Sharaa will seize everything." The risk of large-scale violence, he added, was growing in a region marked by tribal rivalries and years of war. “Northeastern Syria is a very tribal area. The tribal leaders who are mobilizing their groups, their fighters, and they're attacking," Balanche said. “Because of 10 years of civil war, you have a lot of vengeance that was under the table, and now everything is exploding. So it could be very bloody.”

LAM SON 719 AND THE FAILURE OF VIETNAMIZATION Colleague Geoffrey Wawro. The 1971 invasion of Laos (Lam Son 719) exposed the failure of Vietnamization, as South Vietnamese troops were routed without USground support, proving they lacked the leadership and logistics to fight alone. By 1972, only massive American air power, reinstated by Nixon during the Easter Offensive, saved South Vietnam from collapse, while Nixonsimultaneously pursued détente with China and the USSR to isolate Hanoi. The relentless "Linebacker" bombing campaigns eventually forced North Vietnam back to the negotiating table, though the peace deal essentially replicated terms available years earlier. NUMBER 15

President Trump might have shocked some European leaders but the writing has been on the wall for decades: European states will have to take responsibility for their own security. Despite Russian aggression in Europe since Georgia (2008), and the promises made by NATO states in Wales 2014, there are only a few NATO states that can provide a degree of credible assurance on national security to their populations as the US withdraws. "The greatest legacy is love." ~Dr. Kimberly Harms  We all know the importance of life insurance to make certain our loved ones are financially secure after we pass on, but what can we do to ensure they are emotionally secure without us?  Dr. Kimberly Harms has been around the block in life!  She has served as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service, a dental school professor, a grief counselor, a clinical dentist and practice owner with her late husband Jim in Farmington, MN, a death doula, a civil mediator, a school board Chair, President of an international women's organization, the first woman President of the Minnesota Dental Association, co-founder of the 65 Eric Harms Memorial Libraries through Books for Africa in Rwanda, an award-winning bestselling author and an international speaker.  She has also suffered many personal losses, including the suicide deaths of her mother and son and the death from the broken heart of her husband, Jim. Her most important role now is as a mother to her two surviving children and grandmother to six precious grandchildren.  In this episode, Jennifer Hurvitz speaks with Dr. Kimberly Harms, a grief counselor and author, about her journey from being a dentist to navigating profound personal losses, including the suicides of her mother and son. (Proverbs 16:3, 9, 33)In his terrific memoir, On Writing, novelist Stephen King says, “I used to tell interviewers that I wrote every day except for Christmas, the Fourth of July, and my birthday. That was a lie. I told them that because…I didn't want to sound like a workaholic dweeb…The truth is that when I'm writing, I write every day…not working is the real work."I deeply resonate with that last line for two reasons. First, because I (like you) love the work God has given me to do. Second, because rest is an act of faith—it's a way of trusting that the world will keep spinning even if I'm not doing the spinning!Yes, Scripture frequently commands us to hustle and work hard (see Colossians 3:23). But it also tells us to trust that it is God—not us—who produces results in our work (see Deuteronomy 8:18). And that trust ought to lead to a deep rest for our souls (see Matthew 11:29).What does it look like to hold this tension between “trust, hustle, and rest” well? Solomon answers that question systematically in Proverbs 16.First, Solomon calls us to trust by instructing us to “Commit to the Lord whatever you do.” Before we roll up our sleeves, we are to commit our work to God and recognize that whatever fruit our work produces is “from him” (Romans 11:36).Second, Solomon calls us to hustle by saying, "In their hearts humans plan their course.” While God has clearly called us to express our trust in him, he has also given us brains to “plan,” strategize, and execute our plans at work.Finally, Solomon calls us to rest. “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.” In other words, if we have trusted in God for the results of our work and done our part to work “with all [our] heart” (Colossians 3:23), we can rest knowing that “the lot is cast” and the results are in God's hands.I don't know about you, but I need constant reminders to trust, hustle, and rest. If you need the same, let me encourage you to write down one of the following three reminders wherever you'll see them as you work:Trust (Deuteronomy 8:18), Hustle (Colossians 3:23), and Rest (Matthew 11:29)“Without God, we cannot.
