Watch or listen to Robin Waller, church planter and Lead Pastor of Lift Church, being interviewed by seasoned journalist, Lorna Dueck. In this episode, Robin shares his journey from starting out as a nuclear engineering student to leading a network of churches across nine university campuses in Canada. He shares how simple, relational evangelism is reaching a new generation, and how today's students are more spiritually open than we might think. He compels everyday Christians, not just pastors, to play a vital role in disciple-making. In this episode, Robin and Lorna discuss: The story behind launching a church in a university bar and growing into a national campus movement. Sustainable church planting and why combining career and ministry is key. Church growth at Canadian universities and why simple conversations, not big events, are driving growth. How daily Bible reading across an entire church builds deep spiritual formation. Why messy, authentic community is sometimes more effective than polished environments. Biblical inspiration from Paul and Timothy for modern disciple-making movements. Read the transcript: https://biblesociety.ca/transcript-scripture-untangled-s13-ep3=====For the past twenty years, Robin Wallar has devoted himself to making disciples on university campuses in Canada, first as a nuclear engineering student and now as a church planter and software developer. Together with his wife, Laura, they lead LIFT Church, a collegiate discipleship and church planting movement on seven campuses across Canada. Robin's passion is to equip every follower of Christ for disciple-making and church planting in co-vocational settings. He shares the values and theology behind co-vocational ministry in his book Everyone Sent and has written a comprehensive discipleship guide called Living Sent, which are used by students and ministries across North America. He also writes on these topics weekly on Substack. In addition to leading LIFT Church, Robin leads Engage Spaces, a software company designed to support disciple-making movements. He and Laura live in the beautiful city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, with their two children. https://www.liftchurch.ca/ Canadian Bible Society: biblesociety.caHelp people hear God speak: biblesociety.ca/donateConnect with us on Instagram: @canadianbiblesocietyThe Bible Course: biblecourse.ca
As a new year begins, Australian evangelical student ministry is marking a significant leadership transition. After 23 years of stable and influential leadership, Richard Chin has handed over the leadership of the Australian Fellowship of Evangelical Students to Pete Sorrenson. The handover was symbolically marked at the Big National Conference in Canberra last December, where Richard preached the first half of the conference and Pete the second. We step back to reflect on what the Chin era has meant for Australian evangelicalism. How has campus ministry shaped churches, training colleges and mission agencies over the past four decades? What has changed on university campuses since the turn of the millennium? And what kind of AFES will be needed for the next generation of students?Long-standing campus leaders Tim Thorburn and Andrew Sennett, offer perspectives from both metropolitan and regional university contexts. The discussion moves beyond gratitude and legacy to ask harder, forward-looking questions. If many of the theological and ministry convictions once championed by AFES are now mainstream, what is AFES uniquely for today? Are inherited evangelism models still effective on contemporary campuses? How central should international student ministry be? And does Australia's increasingly fragmented university landscape require more than one model of campus ministry?https://www.thepastorsheart.net/podcast/a-new-era-for-australian-university-ministryThe Church Cohttp://www.thechurchco.com is a website and app platform built specifically for churches. Preaching for the First Sunday of Advent, Dr. Angélica N. Quiñónez invites us to reframe Advent as a wake up call to awareness, compassion, and courageous action in the face of injustice: "Advent is not about waiting for God to act. Advent is about waking up to where God is already at work and joining God in that work. Staying awake means being prepared to say yes. Yes to justice. Yes to accompaniment. Yes to human dignity. Yes to policies rooted in compassion. Yes to the long and challenging work of peace. And it means standing where Christ stands."Dr. Angélica N. Quińónez is an educator and serves as the Director of University Ministry at the University of San Francisco. She is agraduate of the University of Southern California where she earned her Doctor of Education degree in Organizational Change and Leadership. She is a double USF Master's graduate in Theology and Teaching with an emphasis in Catholic schools, and earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from Santa Clara University. Preaching for the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Meredith McKay offers a reflection on moving past fear and paralysis to take risks for the good of the world: "Fear keeps us still, while faithfulness keeps us growing. The world today needs people who acknowledge their fear and move past that tendency towards paralysis to instead do their best to live out the call of the gospels."Meredith McKay is Director of University Ministry at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. She completed a Doctor of Ministry at Emory University's Candler School of Theology where she studied trauma and the implementation of trauma-informed care in college campus ministry. An avid reader and writer, she also spends her days experimenting in the kitchen, practicing yoga, connecting with friends, and hanging out with her dog, Junie B. Jason Leonard preaches on forgiveness. Resources from the sermon: "Forgiveness is granted (event) before it's felt (process). It's a promise before God not to take revenge on a wrongdoer for his or her sin against you. Making that promise entails three practical commitments. You promise (1) not to constantly bring the sin up to the wrongdoer in order to browbeat and punish them, (2) not to constantly bring the sin up to other people in order to hurt the wrongdoer's reputation and relationship with others, and (3) not to constantly bring the sin up to yourself—not to keep the anger hot, not to replay the video of it in order to cherish the feeling of nobility and virtue that comes from having been treated unjustly. At first, when you make those commitments—granting forgiveness—you don't feel forgiving at all. You are still angry. That's natural. But if you keep the commitments in a disciplined way (which will be hard)—and you remember the “vertical” dimension: that you're a sinner living wholly by God's grace—then slowly but surely you will feel the forgiveness you have granted." -Tim Keller Forgivness Applied: Turn Your Cheek * Lev 19:17-18 * Matt 5:38-39 * Matt 7:1 * Matt 13:24-43 * Heb 12:15 Confrontation * Matt 18:15-22 * Luke 17:1-4 * Gal 6:1-2 * 2 Thess 3:6-15 * Titus 3:10-11 Confronting a brother or sister in sin: 1. If they sin, go and tell them privately 2. If they don't listen, take 1-2 others along. 3. If they refuse to listen, tell it to the church (if small, leaders if large) 4. If they refuse to listen even to the church, let the person who they sinned against treat them as an outsider.
