July 20, 2025 Pray Like Jesus (part 5): Deliver Us From Evil by Rev. Brady Whitton; Gospel Lesson Matthew 6:9-13; www.FirstMethodist.org
Temptation is a problem. It leads to sin and it separates us from God. The one who cannot be overcome should be petitioned for his protection.Repentance requires action.Sin has no place in our lives. We can't claim to be buried with Christ, made alive in Christ - and remain shackled to our sins. Matthew 6:13 is a call for protection against our own humanity.God tests us. Satan tempts us.Every situation that tests us has an opportunity to tempt us.Embrace the testing. Pray through the temptation.Matthew 6:13, Romans 5:20-21, Romans 6:1-14, James 1:13-14, Romans 7:15-20, Galatians 2:20, Psalm 19:13, Matthew 4:1, James 1:3-4
Lord, deliver us from evil. We say this each week in the Lord's Prayer, but what evil are we asking to be delivered from?

In the sixth and final week of our series called The Lord's Prayer, Pastor Kim examines the final verse of the prayer which reads: and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Kim makes the case that God tests us to strengthen us, the enemy tempts us to destroy us, but God delivers us. A test is meant to prove or improve your character. A temptation is meant to entice you to sin and destroy your faith. Kim explains why God Himself never tempts us in this way. In order to navigate tests and temptations properly we must pray for protection, perceive the real battle, and pursue Jesus' example. Jesus overcame temptations by quoting scripture, trusting His Father, and staying in prayer.

As we conclude our series on the Lord's Prayer, Jesus teaches us that tests, temptations, and suffering are inevitable in this life—realities He himself faced. Through this final petition, He shows us how to live and pray with unwavering trust in our Father's faithfulness to deliver us from all evil.

The sermon centers on the importance of prayer, particularly the Lord's Prayer, emphasizing dependence on God amidst life's challenges and the persistent threat of evil. Drawing from Scripture, including Ephesians and Romans, the message underscores that while believers may face tribulation and fall prey to temptation, Christ's intercession and grace offer a path to deliverance and enduring strength. The speaker encourages introspection regarding the sincerity of prayer, urging listeners to ensure their petitions reflect a genuine desire for God's will and a recognition of their need for His protection and mercy, ultimately finding solace and refuge in Christ.
What if the key to resisting temptation has been hiding in plain sight? This episode explores a powerful but often overlooked weapon within the Lord's Prayer—a plea to avoid temptation and be delivered from evil. Why did Jesus emphasize this specific prayer? Because He knew our human weakness and the crucial role the Holy Spirit plays in helping us overcome. Josiah Alway concludes our series on the Lord's Prayer with a sobering yet encouraging reminder about the battle against temptation. ------America Pray Now publishes a magazine on prayer that is free of charge and can be delivered directly to your home. Traditional Worship | Rev. Dr. Jeff Olive | Throughout Jesus' ministry, prayer was the foundation on which He built His relationship with God. Before every miracle — from giving sight to the blind to feeding of the multitude, from raising Lazarus from the dead to facing that darkest moment in Gethsemane — He always prayed. Prayer was essential for Jesus, and when He gave His Sermon on the Mount, considered to be the greatest of all His teachings, He instructed us on how to pray by giving us the model prayer that has stood the test of time. In this sermon series, we will examine the power and depth of what has come to be known as the Lord's Prayer. As modern-day disciples, we can learn so much from these timeless words. We are delighted you have joined us for our traditional worship, and we welcome you as we explore what it means when we ask, “Teach us to pray.”

This week, we focused on Matthew 6:13, which asks God to "lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil." While God doesn't tempt us, He may allow trials that expose us to Satan's attacks, as seen in Job and Peter's experiences. To resist sin, we need to remember our identity as God's children and live in a way that reflects His holiness. Fleeing from temptation is key, as relying on our own strength is not enough. Instead, we must depend on God's power to stand firm. As we run from temptation, we should pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace. Ultimately, Jesus teaches us to pray for God's help, knowing He provides a way out of temptation.
Scary stories have a unique way of drawing people in. They tell of things beyond our understanding and the best stories have evil being overcome. This is the kind of story we find in Mark 5, which is a continuation of Mark 4:35-41. Mark 5:1-20 shows us that Jesus delivers us from the power of evil so we can tell others about what he has done.
Toward the end of the Lord's Prayer, we implore God to protect us from temptation and from the evil one. Fr. Mike clarifies what we mean when we ask God not to “lead us into temptation” and emphasizes the importance of discerning between trials and temptations. Lastly, we review the conclusion of the Lord's Prayer, known as the final doxology. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 2846-2856.
