Dayton's Silent Disco crew joins us on the mic, featuring return guests John Chapel and Kim L, along with podcast virgin Sexbox. Mo, David, and the Silent Disco crew are all buddies, so this is a fun episode full of jabs and nonsense. But we also do a deep dive into what the silent disco nights actually are, what's fun about them, and why they aren't nearly as awkward as they sound. We discuss the technical capabilities and concerns of using 500 wireless headsets, the different musical "lanes" each DJ represents, the psychology of reading a "silent" crowd... and much more! Today's episode has two purposes: making up for missing the 2021 "holiday" recap episode, and making a big announcement regarding the future of Passionate DJ and the podcast. (Spoiler ahead:) Mo Dingo is now the official host of The Passionate DJ Podcast. This comes as a result of expanding Passionate DJ into many different types of content. Between our online guides, our hardware reviews, industry updates, DJ mixes, live events and more... it became too difficult for David make due dates for the podcast. Making Mo the host is both a logical progression, and an exciting proposition. We will all still be regulars on the show, but Mr. Dingo is the guy hosting and publishing the podcast, so that David can continue focusing on other Passionate DJ content. As we do in our typical holiday episodes, we also reach out to some old friends. Today we're talking with Brian James (The Engineer), DJ AXCESS, B-Funk, and DJ Serrato (no relation). We also recap all of 2021, talking about all the great stuff we did as Passionate DJ. Also, all video podcasts will now go to our new podcast YouTube channel! In today's episode, we're primarily talking about Passionate DJ's latest adventure: throwing live events! In our main segment, we feature an interview with Entel. He was the headliner for our launch event, where he played lovely progressive house and other forms of melodic dance music to a small outdoor crowd of around 150 people.  We threw a secret warehouse pop-up party in Downtown Dayton, OH. This was the first event that PDJ has thrown under it's own name since 2014, so we wanted it to be special. We asked ENTEL to headline the show for us, because his melodic and emotional style fits Passionate DJ well, but also because he's been making moves in the industry. Many more events at this spot (which is called HQ|DYT) are to come. We also talk about the upcoming launch of our new channel, Passionate DJ Performances. This is where we will be posting our DJ sets and mixes, going forward. The "Creative" pricing tier allows you to sync your library across multiple devices.   The removal of Spotify access from third party sources - namely, the removal of Spotify from Algoriddim DJay. They have partnered with companies like Soundcloud Go+ and TIDAL to continue offering streaming services.   The pros & cons of using TIDAL in DJ sets (Mo Dingo shares his experience after a few months of testing).   The addition of "stems"-like technology to both Virtual DJ and Algoriddim DJay. Both companies are trying to make it possible to separate different pieces of a complete stereo track – for example, vocals or drums, rather than requiring a special file format (such as the one practically abandoned by Native Instruments).   All of this, and more, in today's episode of The Passionate DJ Podcast!

On today's episode we talk about the latest news and happenings in the DJ industry in the past month or two, starting with COVID-19 and its potential effect on the festival scene. We move on from that after about 10 minutes, and talk about things that you aren't already tired of. It may seem weird that I've decided to focus on festivals and clubs. After all, in the grand scheme of things, one's ability to party isn't exactly top of the list of emergencies. But, I'm sure you're all aware of the general state of things, so there's no reason for me to restate all of that here. By the time I'm able to record and produce this segment, you'll probably already have more up-to-date info on the virus and its overall impact in your area. So, being that this is Passionate DJ… this is the unique perspective we can offer on the subject. Today's topics: - Coronavirus vs. festival season - The sale of Pioneer DJ (and other Pioneer news) - Software & streaming updates for DJs - The Apollo Masters fire (and danger to the vinyl industry) - Andy King (Fyre Festival) goes on tour - Fuser (upcoming DJ video game) - Air duct club attendee (lol) There is also a rather large segment where we explore the new division of techno as defined by Beatport. Peak/Driving/Hard, vs. Raw/Deep/Hypnotic. Stay safe, and keep on spinning!

Today we're talking about DJ controllers, and deciding which is the best DJ controller to buy as we head into a new year. There are so many options these days... how do you know which to choose? Since 2014, The Controller Compendium has helped thousands of DJs compare the top DJ controllers so that they can get the most for their hard-earned money. This version, as posted on YouTube and on the Passionate DJ Podcast, is based on the written guide which can be found at https://passionatedj.com/controllers. That will be the most up-to-date version of the guide featured in this video. The guide is divided into several price categories: * Premium ($1000+) * Midrange (under $1000) * Budget (under $500) ...each containing a Top 5, plus several honorable mentions. The guide then addresses each of these platforms separately: * Rekordbox DJ * Serato DJ * Traktor DJ * Algoriddim DJay * Standalone ... each containing a top recommendation, plus several honorable mentions. We also talk about what you should consider when you're shopping for a DJ controller, and the knowledge you should bring to the table before hitting "buy". While this guide can't determine a "one size fits all" answer for every single DJ... by the end of the episode, you should have the confidence of making an informed choice for YOUR needs.   Once you've decided what your requirements are, you should decide how much money you're willing to spend on your hobby or business. There are great options in every price point, which is why this guide is initially segmented by price. Never feel like you have to buy high-end gear to be a “real” DJ, or to keep up with the times. Buy the controller that fits your needs, for the amount you have to spend. Even in the “middle” price point, you're mostly just paying for additional luxuries. All the basics will be covered. DJ hardware is only part of the equation. For a steady fix of DJ news, tips, stories, and adventures… follow The Passionate DJ Podcast here on YouTube or on your favorite podcast app. Our show features inspiring stories, interviews with famous DJs, tips to increase your DJing skill, industry news, and much more.

Today's episode features Matt Masin, a DJ from Long Island who has been doing serious work as a club and festival DJ for the past year and a half. Matt joined us for a two-part interview about Up & Up Festival, for which he was playing direct support under headliner Elephante. The Up & Up's innovative guerrilla ticketing system is simple: students crowdsource demand on their campuses leading up to a 48-hour competition period, and the top colleges with the most pre-orders win a festival. The Festival Series launched in 2016, with headliner Cash Cash, and expanded nationwide in 2017 and 2018, featuring Alan Walker, GRYFFIN , Two Friends & Slushii, Lost Kings and Elephante. As a relatively new DJ, Masin has gained more experience in the past year than many DJs ever will. We wanted to talk to him about his active new music career, and get a feel for how he approaches his music. And it's a good thing we asked, because Matt drops a lot of golden nuggets in today's episode. We also get some perspective from co-host and stage manager Tony DeSaro, who tells us about the problems he needed to solve leading right up to the moment the first DJ hit "play"! Coming soon to YouTube: our latest entry in the "Day of the Big Show" series, featuring Up & Up Festival. Check out MASIN on Instagram:
