Dr Sian Williams leads a team charting the story of the Welsh codebreaker whose naked and decomposing body was found inside a bag in his bath at his flat in Central London in August 2010.Mystery still surrounds how and why Gareth Williams, from Anglesey, died - not least how he ended up inside the North Face sports bag in the first place. There were no fingerprints on the bag, on the padlock or in the bath.Gareth's death continues to baffle police with speculation as to the cause ranging from a sex game gone wrong to involvement of a rogue state, possibly Russia. The coroner Fiona Wilcox, who led the inquest into the 31 year old's death, gave a narrative verdict, concluding it was probable Gareth had been unlawfully killed but because there was no clear evidence she couldn't deliver an official verdict of unlawful killing.Gareth Williams normally worked for GCHQ in Cheltenham but had been seconded to the Secret Intelligence Service at MI6 in London. It's still unknown what the exact nature of his work was and evidence by the secret intelligence service at his inquest was minimal.Gareth Williams had not been seen by family or work colleagues for over a week when his body was found and it was only when his sister raised the alarm that MI6 contacted police who carried out a ‘welfare call' at his home in Pimlico. When officers entered his flat they found the heating was on full, (which was unusual for the middle of August) and this may have caused issues for pathologists investigating exactly how Gareth died.In this programme Sian and the team dig deeper into the story. We hear conflicting evidence from experts who attempted up to 300 times to lock themselves inside a North Face sports bag.We delve into some of the evidence not reported widely from the inquest into Gareth's death, we hear more about what his work at MI6 may have actually entailed and we find out some more about Gareth the child genius who went on to be recruited by the intelligence services because of his brilliant mind as a mathematician and codebreaker.Experts give their views on what may have happened to him. We delve some more into the various theories including possible Russian involvement - and we ask whether 13 years on, with notable improvements in DNA gathering procedures, if it's time to re-open the investigation into his death and to finally bring closure for the family and justice for Gareth.Among those Sian and the team meet over the series – Marina Litvinenko, widow of murdered Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko and former KGB agents as well as people who have worked for the British intelligence services and senior police officers who oversaw the enquiry into Gareth's death.Death of A Codebreaker is presented by Sian Williams with contributions from Dyfan Rees, Tracy Cardwell, Ashley Byrne, Wayne Wright and Lewis Allsopp. The series is produced by Wayne Wright. Currently, Wayne works for the 49ers education-community based programs and consults with No Cap Sports. We discussed some of the fears of coaching in today's culture. Coaching today becomes a balance of acknowledging the pressure to help a team win, succeed, becoming a coach that doesn't feel that their past will be judged at any given moment with the possibility of losing their job, or wondering if they are meeting the expectations of the parents. Coaching 20 years ago was different than it is today-- and there is a lot to discuss around this topic! We are so grateful Wayne Wright opened up about the nuances of the coaching world today. Success and Failure lessons taken from Business and Basketball In this episode, Michael talks to Dr Wayne Wright — entrepreneur, inventor, company director, leading business coach and owner of the largest all-inclusive basketball club – The Maidstone Warriors. Listen in as they talk about all things business and basketball. Dr Wayne brings a vast and varied business experience to the conversation. His main business interests have been in the arenas of healthcare and pharmaceuticals, and he is a huge proponent of innovation and invention, with his name on eight patents. For the last twenty years, he has led [W]sq solutions, a boutique coaching organisation that supports entrepreneurs in starting, running, growing and exiting fast-growing businesses. He also works with the executive teams of larger businesses to ensure continued growth and success. Basketball As they talked about Dr Wayne's involvement in the basketball club, it quickly became clear that his interest in this organisation came not from playing the sport, but from observing the positive impact that sport can bring to the lives of anyone involved in it. He talks about the benefits, not just for the top-performers—the stars—but for everyone, and how that spills out into their lives outside of basketball. The success of the club is not just about creating a winning basketball team, but about creating a community, and fostering the next generation of leaders. He brought his understanding of strategy and success, gained from his years in the corporate world, to this very different arena, and helped the club to grow far beyond its origin. He sees many parallels between what happens on the pitch and what happens at work. The club relies on a sizeable team of volunteers, and by supporting and coaching these people, the whole club thrives. In any organisation it is the leadership team who need to set the tone and if they are not sufficiently skilled, whether in their technical skills, such as ball control, or in their interpersonal skills, such as clear communication, then the whole venture is in jeopardy. But a highly skilled top team can spot potential and nurture it, they can spot potential trouble and find the strategies to avoid it. They can help turn an underperformer into a star. Business Success and Failure: Dr Wayne Wright book 10 Commandments of Business Growth One of the most interesting questions that arose in today's conversation was “What makes a person extraordinary, a top achiever, a winner or a champion?” Dr Wayne Wright has had years of business experience working with many highly-placed executives in global businesses, with young entrepreneurs building fast-growing successful enterprises; he's worked with people in many different industries; with inventors and researchers; he's been a director of many companies. His answer to this question took them down a fascinating route. How has your business Suffered during the pandemic? Michael Crane shares his story by stating that the pandemic hit his business seven years prior. He employed 45 staff across two sites, one in South East London and the other site in Sandwich, Kent. He was operating a 24-hour operation with vans circling London and the home counties daily. At that time, he made many changes in the day to day operation and streamlined his operations. He outsourced his warehousing and logistics operations and adopted an e-commerce portal that does heavy back-office functions. Fortunately for him, he preserved cash, ready for all emergency situations. He advises on today's show about the importance of reducing overheads and preserving cash. His business was dramatically affected as the work from home rules meant many of his clients needed to work from home, and the everyday products were not in as much need as before. His product portfolio had to be spun on its head as he started stocking certified PPE products for next day availability to his clients across the United Kingdom. The technology took over to make his business www.easycrane.co.uk highly efficient and effective. The key to his success in the past year was to keep his costs low and, if possible, make them variable as much as you possibly can. Running out of cash adds to the struggle every business faces when they run out of cash. Dr Wayne Wright - Stopped charging The business Recovery Plan for Dr Wayne Wright was to stop charging his clients overnight, which was a remarkable solution but one that was so needed to help his clients. Across the country, we saw companies revenue stream seizing up as the country went into lockdown and people were being forced to work from home. Now he has re-engaged, and he is finding he has got more clients than he ever had before. And his reputation for genuinely and authentically supporting people during challenging times. Because the concept of managing his, clients businesses, to the next your next level and assisting them to scale up during good and bad time is paramount. He has now emerged from the pandemic and found a way to pivot his business is catapulting his business from just surviving to thrive as he continues to grow from strength to strength. Managing People from Afar Business Recovery Plan will consist of managing more of the team remotely than ever before. Michael Crane has suggested some of his favourite productivity hacks, like Asana, Trello and Evernote, to name just a few. These tools are easy to set up and administer and encourages collaboration between key stakeholders in the business.
