Gareth Williams, MD of Hatfields Motor Group joins us again, in the second instalment of his two part interview. With the changes in Jaguar in recent years, Gareth and his team have had to adapt, he elaborates on their new focus and their aims for the future. Also, as Hatfields now offer Omoda & Jeacoo, Gareth is well placed to discuss with us, the future of established brands compared to the offering from China. Then finally, we look at electric vehicles and the opportunities they offer now and beyond. Here are the highlights: {00:47} Changes in Jaguar {05:50} New Focus {12:12} Chinese Brands {21:09} Forward thinking {24:13} Don't say it, do it {26:50} The opportunities electric vehicles offer {39:36} You can't have responsibility without authority About Symco Training: Symco Training was founded in 2000 by Simon Bowkett and it was his belief that the business had to offer its clients something different. That difference was clear to Simon from his days in the dealership when he experienced many sales trainers who had all the answers, but were unable, unwilling or both to actually show the delegate how they could be implemented. It remains the ethos of the business today. #273 - The death of UK spy Gareth Williams in 2010 has become one of the most high-profile unsolved mysteries in years after his naked body was discovered padlocked inside a duffel bag. Described as a genius mathematician who the intelligence service had recruited, Gareth's exact cause of death remains unknown, and people can't agree whether he could have locked himself in there on his own or whether someone else was responsible. There have been a number of theories over the years, including sex games gone wrong and Russian spies. But even today, there are still so many unanswered questions about his death. What happened to Gareth Williams, and how can forensic science help us find those answers? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
"The piece I chose to work (or play) with was a recording from Nepal of someone reciting the mantra “Om Mani Pedme Hung”. This mantra is associated with Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), the bodhisattva embodying compassion. It is often translated as ‘the jewel in the lotus,' and symbolises the union of wisdom and compassion. In the practice that accompanies the mantra, one visualizes the deity Chenrezig, then imagines oneself as the deity, embodying universal compassion, before dissolving into the vast expanse of all-encompassing space. "I experimented with various instruments that I felt resonated with the mantra's essence, including drones, overtone singing, bells, and my primary instrument, the guitar. While playing the guitar, I focused on channeling compassion for all beings, aiming to translate the mantra's profound meaning into musical sound." We are delighted to be joined by Gareth Williams, Managing Director at Hatfields Motor Group. There was so much to discuss, we decided to make this a two part interview and this is the first instalment. Gareth grew up in the trade, and has worked in the industry since he finished university. After working at a Ford dealership, he went to work with his father, and they then bought that business in St Helens together. Gareth still lives by the lessons learnt during those early years, such as always take the people with you, being respectful, presentable, well-mannered and listening to the people who know more than you. He sees some benefits in the agency model, such as consistent profits and stability. One of the mantras throughout his businesses is: treat customers like you want to be treated yourself. There are so many great take aways from this instalment, and in next episode we delve into surviving and thriving after the changes with Jaguar and the benefits of EV's to investors. Here are the highlights: {02:20} Implementing DARTS {09:12} Always take the people with you {14:08} Learn from those around you {17:21} Work Life Balance is the key to attracting staff {20:27} Agency and JLR {23:15} Agency isn't wrong {34:00} Customer service is not about cost {36:00} Culture of empowerment About Symco Training: Symco Training was founded in 2000 by Simon Bowkett and it was his belief that the business had to offer its clients something different.
August 23, 2010. London, England. After he is not heard from for a week, the nude decomposed body of 31-year old Gareth Williams, a junior analyst who had been working with MI6, is found inside a padlocked holdall bag in the bathtub of his flat. While his cause of death cannot be determined, there are differing opinions about whether Gareth could have locked himself in the bag on his own and suffocated, or if he was murdered by an unknown third party. A number of different theories are pushed forward, such as Gareth being killed by Russian agents or becoming the victim of a sex game gone wrong, but there are no conclusive answers about how he died. Did Gareth Williams somehow manage to trap himself inside the bag and die in a tragic accident, or did something else take place? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore of the most bizarre unexplained deaths in the history of the United Kingdom. To this day people argue both sides – just as the court did in the 1940s. (Hellish Nell) *** They loved to drink, and party. They both loved kinky sex, fell in love, and decided to move in together. But their strongest bond would came later – when new couple decided to go on a killing spree. (The Sunset Strip Killers) *** No one could believe that mild-mannered Charlie Brandt had mutilated his wife and niece, until they discovered his grisly past… when he killed his mother when he was only thirteen. (Charlie Brandt Couldn't Stop Killing) *** Encountering the supernatural is no fun and games… unless it is. (Haunted Stuyvesant Hall) *** We've all seen plastic bags take on a personality when blown with a light breeze, seemingly dancing on their own power. But what if what we only thought that was a plastic bag in the wind? Could it have been something more? (Last Dance) *** They say, “be careful what you wish for”. That is especially true if you're doing your wishing through a spirit or Ouija board. (Wishing On the Ouija) *** The executioner tried three separate times to hang the man – rope around the neck, lever pulled… but John walked away alive each time. (The Man They Could Not Hang) *** How can you tell if you are seeing a ghost or something real if it looks as solid as anything else? (I Saw a Spirit) *** If you move into a house that looks like a scene from a horror movie, you probably shouldn't be surprised when you have an encounter with the paranormal. (Ghost Girl In The Old Room) *** The body of Gareth Williams was found stuffed inside a duffel, with the bag's zipper padlocked from the outside. Was it because he was discovered to be a spy? (The Spy In The Bag) *** A father and son tending to their horses are puzzled by how strange the horses were behaving – until they looked up. (Huge Bright UFO Hovered Over Horses) *** While bow hunting, a young man sees what he describes as a Bigfoot… which isn't something you often hear from a place like Kansas. (Bottomland Bigfoot in Eastern Kansas) *** On the way to the beach for some fun, two friends experience fear instead when confronted by a large winged creature. (Huge Winged Being) *** The Bethlem Royal Hospital insane asylum is so notorious that a word originally coined there entered the English language as a word for confusion and disorder… Bedlam (Bedlam – The Real Horror Story Behind the Name) *** Dorothy received phone calls regularly from a stalker, and it frightened her she considered buying a gun, and she began taking self-defense classes. But that didn't stop her from disappearing without a trace. This was meant to be the second of our two spy episodes, and it still is - but first Andrew and Phil were able to speak with our friend, the VERY well connected royal reporter Valentine Low, about the speculation that's now swirling around the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales. We discuss what may have really been going on behind palace - and hospital - walls these last few months, rumours of royal affairs and martial strife, and the extent to which royal people should have their privacy respected when it comes to their private lives and health. Phil also references this article of his about the psychological roots of our interest in monarchy. https://thecritic.co.uk/the-kings-touch/Then writer Robert Verkaik joins to explore the dark and controversial story of the dead British spy Gareth Williams - the notorious 'body in the bag' case from 2010. Was this a Russian 'hit', an imaginatively staged suicide or the result of a bizarre sex game gone very wrong? You can buy books from the authors we feature - including Courtiers by Valentine Low - in our own bookshop. Was it an accident, a suicide, or a murder? That is the theme of this week's episode, and you'd be surprised how often that question is asked.First, Anna shares some information about accidents and why they might fly under the radar as unexplained deaths, and Benton tells the tale of the mysterious death of Gareth Williams. Then, Anna relays the tragic tale of the puzzling death of Laura Letts-Beckett. Finally, the two discuss a classic episode of Forensic Files, profiling the death of Janice Johnson. Our TV doc this week is Season 4: Episode 9 of Forensic Files, "Accident or Murder?"

Discovered by metal detectorists near Leominster in 2015, the Herefordshire Hoard consists of silver coins, gold jewellery and a single silver ingot. It was buried between AD 870 and AD 879 and is likely connected with the presence of the Viking ‘Great Army' in the Kingdom of Mercia during that period. The Hoard reveals new information about politics in the late 9th century, demonstrating the movement and activity of the Viking army and an alliance between the kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex at a time when the unification and of England was taking shape. It is believed that most of the Hoard, discovered in 2015 by metal detectorists in a field near Leominster, has been sold on the black market, with the current collection only representing 10% of the original find. The perpetrators have since been sentenced to over 23 years in prison, but the items illicitly sold have not been recovered. The remaining items from the Hoard – which as ‘treasure' was owned by the Crown - returned to Herefordshire following a fundraising appeal. In this episode we hear from Tim Hoverd, Archaeological Projects Manager for Herefordshire Archaeology, Judy Stevenson, Team Leader for the Herefordshire Museum Service, and Gareth Williams, Curator of Anglo-Saxon coins in the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum. To see the Herefordshire Hoard for yourselves, book your tickets now for the JORVIK Viking Centre. Or, you can watch our videos about the hoard here. The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. travelersinthenight.org Today's 2 topics: — The asteroid named for Mildred Shapley Matthews was lost in the solar system for 75 years. In 1916 the 60 inch Hale telescope on Mt. Wilson, California was the largest telescope in the world. Seth Nicholson and Harlow Shapley used it to discover a 2 mile diameter asteroid. They only observed their new asteroid twice on their discovery night. Shapley named the asteroid Mildred for his one year old daughter. Nicholson and Shapley were able to find asteroid Mildred a couple of times during the month after its discovery. After that its 1,324 day orbit around the Sun was so poorly defined that astronomers did not know where to point their telescopes to observe it and Mildred was declared "lost". Friends of Mildred Shapley Matthews would always ask her if she was found yet. In fact it was not until she was 76 years old that Dr. Gareth Williams rediscovered "lost" asteroid Mildred. After 3/4 of a century of being lost Mildred was found. — The Catalina Sky Survey now operates three telescopes, 24 nights per month, in the Catalina mountains north of Tucson, Arizona. The Catalina Sky Survey began with the University of Arizona's 30 inch Schmidt Telescope on Mt. Bigelow. This telescope became the world leader when it was used to discover 148 Earth approaching objects in 2005. It found the most Potentially Hazardous Asteroids for the next three years running. In 2006 the University of Arizona's 60 inch telescope on nearby Mt. Lemmon received a new camera and many upgrades. In spite of the fact that this telescope was old enough for senior citizen discounts it rapidly became the world's leader in the discovery of Earth approaching asteroids. These telescopes began to make so many discoveries that a telescope which could observe newly discovered objects long enough so that their orbits around the Sun could be nailed down became a necessity. To fill this need an old unused 40 inch telescope was overhauled and installed in a new dome next to the 60 inch telescope on Mt. Lemmon. The plan for the refurbished 40 inch was make it a robot with software designed specifically to track newly discovered Earth approaching asteroids. As might be expected such a software system is easier to think about than it is to implement. Alex Gibbs who is the Catalina Sky Survey's principal engineer took on this herculean task. The result is a followup telescope which really works well. This has relieved the 60 inch of followup duties which is allowing it to spend more time searching the skies for new objects. The Catalina Sky Survey now operates three telescopes, 24 nights per month, in the Catalina mountains north of Tucson, Arizona. In the sixth and final episode of Death of a Codebreaker, Dr Sian Williams asks what justice for Gareth Williams would look like. She hears from Jim Frazer, the forensic scientist who carried out a review into the case 11 years ago as well Angela Gallop who has reviewed dozens of cold cases over the years. She asks if advances in DNA and scientific techniques could help detectives finally solve the mystery of how Gareth Williams died. And she questions whether it's time to put the security forces under greater scrutiny to reveal more about the nature of Gareth's work with M16.Death of a Codebreaker is presented by Dr Sian Williams with contributions from Dyfan Rees, Ashley Byrne, Wayne Wright, James Pepper, Tracy Cardwell and Lewis AllsoppThe series was produced by Wayne Wright, Ashley Byrne and James PepperThe music is by Robin Forrest and the sound design by Kevin Bailey and Mark BurrowsExecutive Producer: Ashley ByrneDeath of a Codebreaker is an MIM Production for BBC Sounds and BBC Radio Wales

The inquest into codebreaker Gareth Williams' death threw up many still-unanswered questions about the circumstances surrounding how he died. Here, Dr Sian Williams examines more closely some of the evidence that came to light during the eight-day hearing and, given the nature of the young Welshman's work for the security services, asks if we will ever know some of the most crucial detail! Journalist and executive producer Ashley Byrne joins Sian as they work through some of the evidence from the hearing with a series of guests with an interest in the case.Death of a Codebreaker is presented by Dr Sian Williams with contributions in Episode 3 from from Ashley Byrne and Dyfan Rees Producers: Wayne Wright and James Pepper. Dr Sian Williams leads a team charting the story of the Welsh codebreaker whose naked and decomposing body was found inside a bag in his bath at his flat in Central London in August 2010.Mystery still surrounds how and why Gareth Williams, from Anglesey, died - not least how he ended up inside the North Face sports bag in the first place. There were no fingerprints on the bag, on the padlock or in the bath.Gareth's death continues to baffle police with speculation as to the cause ranging from a sex game gone wrong to involvement of a rogue state, possibly Russia. The coroner Fiona Wilcox, who led the inquest into the 31 year old's death, gave a narrative verdict, concluding it was probable Gareth had been unlawfully killed but because there was no clear evidence she couldn't deliver an official verdict of unlawful killing.Gareth Williams normally worked for GCHQ in Cheltenham but had been seconded to the Secret Intelligence Service at MI6 in London. It's still unknown what the exact nature of his work was and evidence by the secret intelligence service at his inquest was minimal.Gareth Williams had not been seen by family or work colleagues for over a week when his body was found and it was only when his sister raised the alarm that MI6 contacted police who carried out a ‘welfare call' at his home in Pimlico. When officers entered his flat they found the heating was on full, (which was unusual for the middle of August) and this may have caused issues for pathologists investigating exactly how Gareth died.In this programme Sian and the team dig deeper into the story. We hear conflicting evidence from experts who attempted up to 300 times to lock themselves inside a North Face sports bag.We delve into some of the evidence not reported widely from the inquest into Gareth's death, we hear more about what his work at MI6 may have actually entailed and we find out some more about Gareth the child genius who went on to be recruited by the intelligence services because of his brilliant mind as a mathematician and codebreaker.Experts give their views on what may have happened to him. We delve some more into the various theories including possible Russian involvement - and we ask whether 13 years on, with notable improvements in DNA gathering procedures, if it's time to re-open the investigation into his death and to finally bring closure for the family and justice for Gareth.Among those Sian and the team meet over the series – Marina Litvinenko, widow of murdered Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko and former KGB agents as well as people who have worked for the British intelligence services and senior police officers who oversaw the enquiry into Gareth's death.Death of A Codebreaker is presented by Sian Williams with contributions from Dyfan Rees, Tracy Cardwell, Ashley Byrne, Wayne Wright and Lewis Allsopp. The series is produced by Wayne Wright. The Braw and The Brave is a podcast about people and their passions Episode 214 is in conversation with award-winning composer Gareth Williams. From growing up in Armagh to studying in Belfast, before moving to Glasgow to continue his education in music composition, Gareth's love of storytelling has seen him create a hugely impressive and extensive body of work to date. With ten operas under his belt, he has collaborated on a number of projects that endeavour to challenge the medium of opera, breathing life into untapped stories, introducing new audiences to the genre. As Composer in Residence at Scottish Opera from 2011 to 2014, alongside creating a series of operas, Gareth also established Breath Cycle at the respiratory ward of Gartnavel Royal Hospital, working with patients with Cystic Fibrosis. Breath Cycle was nominated for a Royal Philharmonic Award in 2015 and the project now supports those dealing with Long Covid. With a self-confessed obsession with ‘writing wee tunes and telling wee stories', during the pandemic, Gareth was inspired to compose a stunning album entitled Songs From The Last Page, which both showcases Scottish literature and explores the relationship between text and song. Released in August 2023, he has subsequently toured a number of venues across Scotland bringing the stories and songs to both music and book lovers alike. Documenting his fascinating musical journey to date from playing in piano bars to writing an opera staged in a lighthouse, for Gareth Williams it's always about the people, the places and the stories.
