Nolia Noon, an emerging indie rock band from Louisville, Kentucky, draws from a rich palette of influences, spanning the soulful storytelling of Johnny Cash and BB King to the raw energy of Nirvana and Oasis. Formed in 2021, the group initially experimented with different names and lineups before solidifying its identity in July 2022 with its current members: drummer Nick Beach, bassist John Roach, and singer/guitarist Jared Foos. In their debut year, Nolia Noon introduced themselves to the music scene with several singles, including "Roses" released in July 2022. These 2022 tracks quickly garnered attention, with "Roses" earning airplay on Louisville's esteemed 91.9 WFPK and a spotlight feature on the station's website. The band followed up with a music video for "Roses" in September, adding a visual element to their evocative sound. They continued releasing singles in 2023, along with the EP "Holeboy". The name “Nolia Noon” carries a mysterious backstory. While brainstorming, Jared and John landed on the moniker after tweaking the phrase "Magnolia Moon" into something unique. However, an eerie coincidence emerged when they discovered that a woman named Nolia Noon, born on July 4, 1880, and buried in Louisville's Cave Hill Cemetery, shared the name. The connection deepened when they realized lyrics from their song "Love Yourself" referenced the same date, a detail that predated their name choice. Nolia Noon's journey so far includes performances across Louisville's vibrant venues and a headlining slot at a Centre College music festival in Danville, Kentucky, where both Jared and John studied. The band's blend of soulful roots and 90s grunge sensibilities, combined with their organic chemistry, has positioned them as a group to watch. With their captivating stories and distinctive sound, Nolia Noon is carving a unique path in Louisville's music scene and beyond. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support
Few musicians today stay as busy as Aaron Bibelhauser. Not only is he a prolific songwriter and one half of the twin brother-led bluegrass band called The Bibelhauser Brothers, but he hosts a notable bluegrass music radio show, collaborates with several other artists on albums and singles and leads a community jam session periodically in his home city of Louisville. The only mystery about Aaron is when does he sleep? Aaron and his twin Adam, who splits vocals with his brother, plays bass, contributes to the writing and production of songs, and naturally offers beautiful blood harmony to the group, joined Roots Music Rambler this week to talk about the group's new singles, a potential new album, collaborations and more. We discussed their journey to be musicians, and their history with a previous band called Relic as well. While Adam has a day job and is a full-time dad, Aaron is busy writing, performing and producing. He's penned songs for Del McCoury, Michael Cleveland, and the Louisville Shakespeare Festival, and produced a tribute album for Mickey Clark. He's also the host of Bluegrass Evolution, a Sunday night bluegrass radio program on WFPK (91.9 FM) in Louisville. Also on the show, Frank and Falls discuss Grammy snubs and take a listen to Stephen Wilson Jr.'s astonishing new cover of Ben E. King's standard “Stand By Me,” which lit up the Live at the Print Shop video concert series recently. Don't forget you can now show your support of the show with Roots Music Rambler's new merch, now available at rootsmusicrambler.com/store. Authentic t-shirts, hats and stickers are now available. The Bibelhauser Brothers combine twin brother duet harmony vocals with high energy bluegrass-country-soul sounds. On the heels of their latest release “Close Harmony”, Adam and Aaron create an experience fueled by instrumental prowess, original songs, and obscure country classics. In addition to writing songs recorded by award winning bluegrass artists including Del McCoury, Balsam Range, Michael Cleveland, & Dale Ann Bradley, Aaron Bibelhauser is an accomplished session musician on half a dozen instruments, producer and recording engineer for other regional artists, and long time host of the weekly radio broadcast “Bluegrass Evolution” on 91.9 WFPK in Kentucky. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support
This week on Roots Music Rambler, hosts Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) and Jason Falls (Falls) are joined by country music singer and songwriter Rachel Brooke. Her new single is out and she is touring the U.S. this summer to drum up anticipation for an EP later this year and perhaps a new full album in 2025. She sat in with Frank and Falls to share her journey from being a teenage punk band drummer to crooning country songs in honky tonks around the midwest. She also discussed her music and writing, the layoff from touring and recording brought about my motherhood and much more. Frank and Falls also talk about being locked in a hotel room … twice. (And yes, we said locked “in”!) Falls shares his experience seeing Joy Oladokun, Gary Clark Jr., and others at the inaugural I Made Rock and Roll festival in Indianapolis. Welcome to Episode 17 of Roots Music Rambler! Join us – hosts Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) and Jason Falls (Falls) as we explore the real roots of the music we love. This week, New Jersey-based singer songwriter Renee Maskin joins the show to talk about her transition from progressive rock and punk to folk and Americana. She's now on her third album, an imaginative gem called Shimmer, and has even been named songwriter of the year and artist of the year by New Jersey Stage. Maskin spent several years in a progressive / punk band before a fateful trip to Texas and a recommendation to listen to Tom Waits turned her musical interests to folk and Americana. Since the switch, she's been honored as a songwriter with awards and recorded three albums, all fueled by the inspiration surrounding the music scene in her hometown of Asbury Park, N.J. She sat in with Falls to talk about the Bruce Springsteen-vibe of Asbury Park, her evolution as a songwriter, touring with her former band which included touring with The Pretenders and more. Maskin started her professional pursuits in college as a visual artist, but quickly moved to music full-time. She's been writing since she first took a guitar lesson as a teenager. Frank and Falls also talk about Falls's recent invitation to fill-in on WFPK's Roots ‘n' Boots, a weekly roots music show on terrestrial radio in Louisville, music documentaries worth watching and, of course, both share their regular pickin' the grinnin' recommendations for new music. Welcome to Episode 13 of Roots Music Rambler! Join us – hosts Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) and Jason Falls (Falls) as we explore the real roots of the music we love. On this episode, Falls sits down with three members of the Louisville-based Digby, which is back with its first album in 17 years. The group, originally known as Hundred Acre Wood, scored a modest hit single in the early 2000s with “Hundred Percent Free” but put down the guitars, drums and fiddle as life happened to its members. While often labeled a “power pop” band, the group evolved from a more acoustic and folk-based sound and fits squarely into the Americana vibe. They debuted the single “Love is Love ” on Valentine's Day on WFPK in Louisville. The full album, Happy Little Heartbreak, drops March 1. The episode features the world-wide debut of three songs from the upcoming album (clips, not the full cuts), and lead singer, guitarist and primary songwriter Paul Moeller, lead guitarist Rich Oeffinger and bassist Ben Schneider all dialed in to chat about the past, present and – yes – future of Digby. Also on the show, Frank and Falls discuss the recent news that Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires are divorcing. Falls drops a truth bomb on Swifties after Taylor's tacky promotional speech at the Grammys. And, of course, some new music was offered up as this week's Pickin' the Grinnin' for you to feast upon. Welcome to Episode 12 of Roots Music Rambler! Join us – hosts Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) and Jason Falls (Falls) as we explore the real roots of the music we love. On this episode, we finally explore the topic that has been nagging at Falls (at least) for some time: Does Wilco suck? Needless to day, it's an entertaining conversation that might end in a different place than you expect. Also on the show, Frank asks Falls about his burgeoning addiction to vinyl record shopping and the two interview their daughters about the music they love. Katie and Lucia joined the hosts for some spirted talk about Boy Genius, Lovejoy, Gracie Abrams and more. And, of course, some new music was offered up as this week's Pickin' the Grinnin' for you to feast upon. The melodic songs of experimental folk artist Jack Keyes capture his contentment with being himself in the present moment while holding a somber reverence for the past. The resulting music is soothing and intimate with an undercurrent of raw darkness. Keyes' newly released album Dissolving in Dusk is a 10-track exploration of the impermanence of natural beauty and its reflection in the small moments of the day. Keyes' fingerpicked guitar and whispered vocals recall Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, and Sufjan Stevens. In his sophomore album, Keyes has further found his confidence and voice, and has branched out in his instrumental experimentation. The penultimate track, The Moon is Too High (The Song), captures these production choices, with low-pitched electric guitars and a vocal sampler adding a unique twist to the folk genre. After releasing his first full-length album, “The Moon is Too High” in March 2021, Keyes has carved out a niche in the online DIY scene and in his hometown in Louisville, Kentucky. He has contributed songs to compilation albums for the influential bedroom label Z Tapes, and has been featured in a benefit album for Ukraine by Bughead Records. In Louisville, he has had songs featured on local NPR affiliate WFPK, and performs frequently at classic venues in town such as Kaiju and the Flamingo Lounge. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tophillrecording/support
Louisville concert series Waterfront Wednesday turns 20 this year! This week on "In Conversation," we found out how WFPK is planning to celebrate the big anniversary, and share some memorable moments from the waterfront. Have you gotten into the Wordle craze and wondered whether it's good for you? Rick Howlett asks an expert on brain health. We also revisited a conversation with visitors from the latest Festival of Faiths, about the intersection of racial justice and religion.
Kevin Morby and Hamilton Leithauser stopped by the WFPK studios during their tour together and spoke with Kyle Meredith about the history of their friendship and writing the song "Virginia Beach" together. The pair also perform the song, as well as Morby's "Campfire" and Leithauser's "The Stars of Tomorrow." Morby then spoke about releasing the demos to Sundowner and both artist's experience with demoitis (a phenomenon by which you listen to one version of something so frequently that the proper recording becomes difficult to accept.) Meanwhile, Leithauser talks about living in Washington, DC during the political unrest of the last few years, releasing his live album from Cafe Carlisle, and how the characters that populate last year's The Loves of Your Life all seem to be running from someone. Listen to Hamilton Leithauser and Kevin Morby discuss their time on the road and more by listening to the episode above or via the YouTube player below. Routine Caffeine, based in Louisville, Kentucky, are new on the scene with their soft, sweet, yet femme fatale attitude. Two gals from Michigan meet two gals from Kentucky to offer up an indie rock sound as unique as the women that craft it. They are currently working on an EP that is set to release early 2022 via To-Go Records. Their first single, "Pennies in the Garden", has received high praise from publications like New Commute, WFPK 502tunes, and Grlsplain. New Commute describes the song as "spiraling, locked groove guitar riffs that perpetuate into a multicolored dreamcloud of lazing surf rock." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tophillrecording/support

Longtime Louisville Public Media host James Bickers passed away last week at 45, and it hit us all hard. If you didn't live in Louisville or listen to WFPK and WFPL, you might not understand exactly how large an impact he had on the organization and the community. Since James was a consummate conversationalist, I thought the best way for me personally to pay tribute was to display those skills with this classic Ray Harryhausen interview.
