Episode 098 brings a double dose of low end theory, welcoming a pioneering pair of underground bass legends percolating on opposite coasts, both cats deep in the streets and boasting decades in the game, with the catalogues and collaborators to prove it. 0:00 - ep.098 preview 3:30 - High Sierra Music Festival 2026 6:30 - The Upful Update 12:00 - intro: Club d'Elf's MIKE RIVARD [aka Micro] 15:00 - INTERVIEW w/ MICRO [83m] 1:38:00 - introducing LONNIE MARSHALL 1:42:00 - INTERVIEW w/ LONNIE [43m] 2:24:30 - afterglow x ViBE Junkie Jamz First up Mike Rivard [aka Micro] - bass/sintir/founder/visionary of Boston's jazz-trance-dub-hop institution known as Club d'Elf. Twas an honor and privilege to finally tap in with Micro after a quarter century of fandom and awe. We chop it up at length about his group's unicorn career, magnificent co-conspirators like the late Mark Sandman, John Medeski, Brahim Fribgane (RIP), Joe and Mat Maneri, Dave Tronzo, and (Friends Of The Pod) Mister Rourke, Adam Deitch, Ryan Zoidis, Jonny G, among several others. We learn about Moroccan sintir; the healing powers of Gnawa trance music; plant medicines and Terrence McKenna; Micro's personal trials and tribulations along the way; his perspective on the integral role of independent music venues; interpolating NOLA Second Line rhythms in tandem with Morrocan traditions; and revisiting his embryonic journeys with the Grateful Dead as a wide-eared, curious youngster. In April 2026, Club d'Elf unveiled their latest full-length LP Loon & Thrush, a positively magnificent affair in a deep, eclectic d'Elf canon brimming with brilliant configurations and bold adventuring. We chase that inspired dialog with another informative chat featuring LA-based bassist/badass Lonnie Marshall from pioneering underground funk/hip-hop squadron Weapon of Choice. Lonnie was kind enough to hop on the line and discuss his life of Nutmeg Music, his bombastic and eclectic history and colorful persona, lineage from the P-Funk family tree and his teenage era rolling with Bootsy Collins' Boot Camp, storytelling and dope collabs, daKAH hip-hop orchestra, recording/gigging with Joe Strummer's debut solo LP/group, reflections on his brother Arik Marshall's brief, chaotic moment with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and long-term run backing Macy Gray. Plus a whole lot more in this educational inspirational get down with the most mega-nutt mug to ever bless these podwaves! Bassist/sintir sorcerer Mike Rivard [aka MicroVard] defies any sort of rigid genre-specifics or generic categorization. The cat finds himself at home in a bewildering array of musical/cultural settings: from the good ol' Grateful Dead to the melancholic-rock of his late friend Mark Sandman and Morphine, to the mountains of Morocco with local Berber musicians, plus side trips into the Broadway pits, and tantric trance sessions with John Medeski and Joe Maneri. A "military brat" coming of adolescence in the wide expanses of Minnesota, he took in the local sounds of Prince, Husker Du, and the free-jazz coming out of the University of Minnesota milieu. Eventually a young Rivard would find himself while hitchiking on Dead tour, further opening up nascent doors of perception. Later, Micro set about embarking on Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music in 1981. After graduating, he studied with jazz legend Dave Holland. Inspired by North African gnawa music, he picked up a Moroccan sintir (three-stringed bass lute) and with guidance from Hassan Hakmoun and Maalem Mahmoud Gania, he has become one of a handful of Western musicians proficient on the instrument. He puts all of the shared sacred teachings and wisdom to good use in Club d'Elf, the jazz-world-dub-electronica squad he formed in 1998. Club d'Elf can be heard across more than 15 albums over the past 25 years; an eclectic, pioneering collective with a vast array of co-conspirators from around the world. Club d'Elf website Instagram new album Loon & Thrush After years grinding it out on the LA scene with his brother Arik in Marshall Law, Lonnie Marshall founded Weapon of Choice in 1992, holding down bass and lead vocals. After a video directed by Geoff Moore for their song "Uppity, Yuppity Doolittle" came to the attention of Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard, the band was signed to Gossard‘s record label Loosegroove. They released three albums with Loosegroove before the company folded in 2000: "Nut-meg says Bozo the Town" (1994), Highperspice (1996), and Nutmeg Phantasy (1998). In 2001, the band dropped Illoominutty on Fishbone's Nuttsactor 5 record label, and in 2003, they released Color Me Funky. Since 1997, Lonnie has performed alongside members of P Funk and Fishbone, among others, as part of Trulio Disgracias - a constantly mutating funk-rock-jazz collective headed by by Norwood Fisher. Lonnie was an emcee, composer, and performer for daKAH, a 65 piece hip-hop orchestra which coalesced periodically in the Los Angeles area for many years. Before that, Marshall wrote, recorded and toured with the legendary Joe Strummer of The Clash, behind Strummer's dynamic 1989 solo debut Earthquake Weather. Lonnie has contributed/collaborated with Macy Gray, Snoop Dogg, Tone Loc, Ice Cube, George Clinton, Funkadelic, Perry Farrell, Les Claypool, Stone Gossard and his brother Arik Marshall. A few weeks ago, Captain Content threw down a challenge to find great new music, and Kevin didn't just step up—he delivered in spades. Typically, we recognize all of the amazing recorded output of the current year at the end of the year; however, there are just too many great releases this year to wait until December. We're not even halfway through the year yet, and we already have all of these great tunes! Who was that said rock n' roll was dead??? What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week, we look at an amazing year of releases for the world of rock n' punk n' metal. We hope we turn you onto something new! Jason and Paul celebrate the 35th anniversary of the lone Temple of the Dog record by reviewing it...retroactively. In the wake of Andrew Wood's death, Chris Cornell sought to mourn through music...writing music to honor his friend who'd died of a drug overdose. In doing so he convinced Wood's former Mother Love Bone bandmates, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, to help him flesh out and record the music along with Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron...and lead guitarist Mike McCeady (who'd been recently jamming with Ament and Gossard in a new project which would eventually become Pearl Jam). This is that record and this is our review of it...35 years later.Buy Pod MerchBecome a PatronWatch Us on YouTubeFollow Us on InstagramFollow Us on FacebookFollow us on XPlease take a short survey HERE to help us better the show! This week, we're scratching The Itch for riffs! Jamie Hall of Tigercub joins us to discuss the process of creating their new album, Nets to Catch the Wind. By the time a band reaches their fourth record, it can be easy to fall into familiar creative patterns and produce work that isn't as satisfying for the artist or the audience. But with Jamie's awareness of his own habits and a bit of inspiration from their creative partner Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, the band's new album may be both their biggest and their most intricate yet. And they're not stopping with the studio, as they just performed their most ambitious headline show ever in London, pulling out new stops such as a Kabuki drop, and they're aiming to do the same on May 13th at the Gramercy in New York City. This one was a long time coming, and we're thrilled to finally bring it to you. Enjoy. Listen to The Itch Rock Radio Show Rock with us every Sunday night from 6-9pm CST on KCLC-FM in St. Louis.

Now PBS, NPR and around 1,000 affiliates are without federal dollars that will drastically affect those stations...if not outright put take them off the air. Many Americans get their news and curated music from these media...so now what? Kyle offers his insight. Chris Cornell also makes a cameo - and it turns out some of Soundgarden's biggest songs were inspired by a prop on the set of this very movie. PLUS: Our pal Jacob Givens (from the Waterproof Records Podcast and the internet at-large) joins us for the whole episode!
This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with Seattle-based multi-instrumentalist singer, songwriter, and soul innovator Brittany Davis. Originally from Kansas City, Brittany began playing piano and organ at a young age. After relocating to Seattle about a decade ago, their exceptional songwriting caught the attention of Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, leading to a deal with his label, Loosegroove Records, and the birth of two outstanding albums. Blind since birth, Brittany describes themself as a “vessel of sound,” experiencing music in spirit and colors. To Brittany, everything is an instrument — every sound, object, and moment holds musical potential. Their work spans genres, blending elements of soul, R&B, rock, and hip-hop. Her latest album, a stunner entitled Black Thunder, is the focus of this episode. Black Thunder is a profound, fully improvised, fully realized collection that recalls artists like Nina Simone and Roberta Flack in its immersive, incantatory spirit. Produced by Josh Evans, it features Davis on keys and vocals, Evan Flory-Barnes on bass, and D'Vonne Lewis on drums. The trio — who barely knew each other prior to recording together — improvised Black Thunder in a surge of interactive creativity across two days in the studio. The short window in which to work did away with overthinking and brought each musician's A-game. Steeped in Black and Afrocentric cultural influences, this is Davis's most poignant and cathartic work to date. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with acclaimed singer-songwriter Mason Jennings. Mason is a Minnesota-based artist who is well known for his simple yet catchy melodies, intimate lyrics, intensely literary and historical themes, and deep tenor's voice. With the release of his latest album Magnifier (Loosegroove Records) — the focus of this episode — Mason has gifted the world with 20 excellent and deeply affecting albums. Recorded solo at his lake house in Minnesota with just vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, kick drum, and snare, Magnifier finds Mason at his most minimal and honest. The eight songs that comprise the album meditate on love, change, grief, and hope, crafted with the kind of quiet intensity and lyrical precision that has become his hallmark. Magnifier was co-produced by Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard, also his band mate in the genre-bending band Painted Shield. With Magnifier, Jennings circles back to his acoustic roots, crafting what may be his most personal and affecting album yet.Follow Mason Jennings on Instagram.Follow Mason Jennings on Youtube.Listen to and/ or buy Magnifier on vinyl here. This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store

Pearl Jam's short Australia/New Zealand is underway, and the next stop on the map is Melbourne! It's a city that has a very rich history with this band featuring countless of classic shows from the early 90's. Due to special Patreon request, this week we are covering the 2009 show. It's a different setlist than what we covered from Auckland last week, but we'll dig into more Backspacer deep cuts, crowd friendly moments and Ben Harper collaborations. Some of you may know Javier's frustration with 2009 from a sound perspective, how they were using tube amps that did not aid some of the intricacies that Stone and Mike add to specific songs when they play. We'll have a good long discussion on how all of that works from both the technical and non-technical POVs, and present examples of songs it benefits and others that it doesn't. We have some great moments in this set to get into including Indifference and Red Mosquito with Ben Harper, Throw Your Arms Around Me with Liam Finn and a version of Porch that unleashes the best of Stone Gossard. Noel catches up with Jeremy Toback. The singer-songwriter came on to the scene as the bassist of the Seattle-based band, Brad, featuring Pearl Jam guitarist, Stone Gossard. Brad's debut album, Shame, features the songs, "Buttercup" and "20th Century." Jeremy released two critically lauded solo CDs, Another True Fiction and Perfect Flux Thing. The single, “You Make Me Feel” was a top 25 Adult Top 40 radio hit in 1999. Jeremy then collaborated with Renee Stahl to form Renee and Jeremy. They recorded alt lullabies on 2006's It's A Big World. 2012's A Little Love followed with the duo's groovy acoustic take on Queen's You're My Best Friend. They released their latest, Shout, last year featuring covers of Tears For Fears and Harry Styles.
We're picking up where we left off last week as this episode focuses on night two of the two show run from Pearl Jam's shows in Atlantic City in 2005. High octane performances, an intimate crowd and a Bruce Springsteen cover happen in night one, but what could possibly top that? A song debut from an unreleased album, Stone Gossard grabbing the mic and an appearance from a spaceman? Those three things could help the cause. The band kicked off this show with a dynamite version of Present Tense and from there it just kept getting better and better. Immortality impacts the crowd with an intense ending, Not For You has a fun new section improved, they let Stone sing even though the crowd wanted to drop the Leash and we get the live debut of Avocado track Gone seven months before the album came out. We will spend a lengthy amount of time on the debut due to it's uniqueness in the catalog. The song was written that weekend in Ed's hotel room and featured no other band member's accompanyment. So how was it able to be as impactful as it was considering the elements? You'll find out in the show! Also, we see a rock legend join up with the band for Rockin' In The Free World here, and since we have finished up the North American run of our tour, we'll spend some time discussing some of the OTOTOs played at Ohana Festival. While we give Whale Song some love here, the episode was recorded before the band broke out Gremmie Out Of Control on night two. So perhaps you'll hear a voice talk about it real quick at a very opportune time! We should've mentioned that Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were also previously in Mother Love Bone, and that Soundgarden's Matt Cameron was also in Temple Of The Dog.
This week: a new series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but more about artists with similar vibes, sharing a sonic landscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. We kick off this series with a band near and dear to both humble hosts. A band whose live show made us both immediate fans back in 2004; the amazing British power trio MUSE! Join us as we discover other bands influenced and inspired by MUSE's complex yet accessible modern rock. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As always, we hope we turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:Tigercub – “Swoon” from The Perfume Of Decay (2023)Anchor Lane – “Stutter” from Call This A Reality? This week on One Song we're sharing another music podcast that LUXXURY and Diallo Riddle both love: It's called Broken Record. The tagline for the show is “liner notes for the digital age” and each episode features a different in-depth conversation with an iconic artist. This time it's Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam. Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond, with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam, and Leah Rose.

Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament are two of the Seattle scene's most foundational musicians from the 80's and 90's. Stone and Jeff started playing together in 1984 as members of Green River, which eventually dissolved, leading singer Mark Arm to form Mudhoney. Later, Jeff played bass and Stone played guitar in Mother Love Bone until their lead singer Andrew Wood died of an overdose just days before their major label debut in March of 1990. Reeling from Andy's death, Jeff and Stone started recording with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell on a side project called Temple Of The Dog that featured vocals from a then unknown singer from San Diego named Eddie Vedder. Later that year, Jeff and Stone asked Eddie to join their new band with guitarist Mike McCready. As Pearl Jam, they released their debut album Ten in August of ‘91—the album went 13 times platinum and charted on Billboard for nearly five years. Since then, Pearl Jam have released 11 more albums and built a die-hard fan base thanks in part to their outstanding live shows. Last week they released their latest album, Dark Matter, which was produced by Andrew Watt, who's recently worked with Miley Cyrus, Iggy Pop, Post Malone and Ozzy Osborne. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament about how Andrew Watt's encyclopedic knowledge of Pearl Jam helped inspire some of their best performances to date. Stone and Jeff also open up about the inner-workings of their professional relationship, and Stone remembers the first time he met Eddie Vedder, who marked the occasion by passing him a hand-written poem. Let's look back to a Pearl Jam show that was played less than two years ago in Copenhagen, Denmark. Every time the band makes their way through there, its with heavy hearts attributing back to the 2000 tragedy at the Roskilde Festival where nine people lost their lives. During the initial 2020 run scheduled before Covid happened, the date that they were set to play Copenhagen was on June 29th, just a day short of the 20th anniversary of that day. The band wear their hearts on their sleeves for an emotionally powerful version of Love Boat Captain where Ed expresses his sorrow and explains how it changed the band moving forward. This week we have an interview with Joshua and Yonat Goldberg, a father and daughter who experienced their first Pearl Jam show on this night. We'll get to hear their background of how they discovered the band and bonded over them before deciding to take a visit to Denmark to see them. It's a great story for anyone who has passed music down to their children in hopes to get them to feel the same impact that they experienced at a young age. Outside of Love Boat Captain, we'll focus in on performances of Lukin, Daughter, Retrograde and Never Destination, While Javier will join us to discuss the 2022 reemergence of Garden, and a little bassy Stone Gossard on Dance of the Clairvoyants. ¡Descubre la historia detrás de una de las bandas más influyentes de la década de 1990 con Vinyl Radio!
Pearl Jam was on a special run as the season turned to spring in March of 1992. They were headlining small club shows in Europe, clicking well together on stage and getting incredible reactions from the crowd who knew the catalog. While we have looked into some of the highly praised Netherlands shows from this run (Den Haag, Utrecht), this episode touches up on a show that is a bit forgotten about from Eindhoven. Being the 20th show on a rigorous touring schedule, being on the road can kind of catch up with you after a while. After canceling a show two days prior to give Ed vocal rest, he came into this show without the normal zip on his fastball. Songs that are usually known for high-octane intensity were a bit laboring on Ed's voice. We'll talk about that, and how the setlist likely needed rearranging to try and capture momentum, but we'll also talk about some of the major issues that they were having with crowds at the time. During this version of Alive, there are multiple moments of commotion - a guys loses his "spectacles" and stage divers are carelessly jumping on and off the stage whilst kicking people in the head and stepping all over the band's gear. We'll focus on a message from an irate Jeff Ament, who had just about enough of the shenanigans happening at the time. Also, we had some new sound bytes revealed from Dark Matter this week! We re-recorded our original opening segment that was about it being a little bit too quiet with a month to go until the release date because we got snippets of both Something Special and Running within the days between our recording schedule. We'll talk about what we hear from those songs, and we'll break down Stone Gossard's interview with Jonathan Cohen for SPIN.com. Brittany Davis - "Sepricon" from the 2024 album Image Issues on Loosegroove Records Last we spoke with Seattle artist Brittany Davis, they had released an EP via Loosegroove Records, the label ran by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard (who is also Davis's bandmate in the side project, Painted Shield). Now, they've returned with their debut full-length album, titled Image Issues, out March 1st on Loosegroove. It's an ambitious 26-track, concept-driven release, interspersed with spoken word pieces by Davis, and with deeply personal lyrics touching on their "discrimination as a Black, non-binary, blind musician, to traumatic family experiences touching on abuse, gun violence, and the prison system." The LP was co-produced by Josh Evans (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Brandi Carlile), with Gossard's full support. (“He is everywhere in spirit and conception and love and vision,” Evans told Spin Magazine.) Davis describes today's Song of the Day as "definitely born to funk...to soul funk! The record is an ode to James Brown and filled with thoughtless greatness...there really is no rhyme or reason to it...all primal instinct." Universe: “Super Fuzz or Big Muff?”Mudhoney: “Both!”What else would you expect from a band that titled their mischievously visceral '88 debut EP after both pedals (Superfuzz Bigmuff)?Formed in the late '80s by guitarists Mark Arm and Steve Turner after the dissolution of their band Green River (which included future Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam cofounders Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard), Mudhoney long ago solidified themselves as the Seattle scene's big brothers and tightest pack. Through their 11 LPs, five EPs, and six live albums, Mudhoney has routinely diversified and further defined their eccentric brand of raucous, aggressive, unfiltered rock 'n' roll. Possibly more impressive than the band's wide influence and devoted authenticity is the foursome's bond. Drummer Dan Peters and bassist Matt Lukin (also a founding member of the Melvins) were the rhythmic bedrock for Arm and Turner's exploding-M-80 tones since the beginning. (Arm and Turner have been friends since high school and have been playing off each other since then.) But Lukin left the band in 2001 because tour life became too much, and Guy Maddison has been thundering ever since. To see a group's career that's pushing past 35 years and only have one member swap is as inspirational as it is baffling. How?!“We like each other a lot. We get along. We love what we're doing,” remarks Arm. “Why stop, even if no one gives a shit?”Friendship matters to Arm and Turner, but gear isn't a concern unless it points them in one direction—east. More specifically, toward Detroit, Michigan. And even more specifically, to the Stooges. Both namecheck the livewire band and their raw power several times in our Rig Rundown. However, in a 2018 interview with Premier Guitar, they acknowledged regenerating sounds that echo influences from Neil Young and the Byrds to Devo and the Dead Kennedys. But after chasing “I-Wanna-Be-Your-Dog” sizzle, what else leads them to the gear they use? Has that mentality changed since the late '80s?“If you think about the aesthetics of where we come from—garage punk, and punk rock in general—a lot of it was made with cheap gear, and a lot of it was reclaiming gear that guitarists had kind of dismissed as garbage. Like the Mustang. That was my ultimate guitar back when I was a kid, but it was poo-pooed when I finally got one. I could get them for $150. The Danelectro and Silvertone amps were kind of high-rated garbage when we were getting into them. We based a lot of our sound on cheap gear, so it makes sense to me that I still buy the cheap gear,” concluded Turner. They're still pragmatic about their setups, preferring equipment that's familiar and reliable. Where they chase the dragon is in stompboxes. Turner trusts the Big Muff (his favorite iteration is from the mid-'80s), while Arm's torrid tone burns with a Super Fuzz clone. However, both have additional hot-sauce stompboxes and other effects on their pedalboards that are being auditioned trial by fire.Hours before Mudhoney's headlining set at Nashville's Basement East, Arm and Turner brought PG's Chris Kies onstage to catalog their setups. Turner started the party by talking about a pair of guitars—his battle-tested late-'60s Guild Starfire IV and a recently-acquired Fender Gold...
For the 35th anniversary of Mudhoney's first 12-inch record, SUPERFUZZ BIGMUFF, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Mark Arm met Steve Turner at a show in Seattle, they became fast friends and began playing in multiple bands together. They started Green River with Jeff Ament and Alex Shumway and eventually added Stone Gossard on second guitar. Tensions over the musical direction of the band eventually caused Green River to dissolve with Ament and Gossard going on to form Mother Love Bone and Arm and Turner deciding to form Mudhoney. With Mudhoney, they had a vision for fuzz drenched guitars and blending 60s garage with punk rock. They eventually added Dan Peters on drums and Matt Lukin on bass and had their first practice on New Year's Day in 1988. Bruce Pavitt of Sub Pop offered to pay for some studio time with Jack Endino so he could hear the material they were working on. From those sessions, they released the "Touch Me I'm Sick" single in the summer of 1988. At that point, they went back into the studio with Jack Endino to work on the songs that would become SUPERFUZZ BIGMUFF. In this episode, Mark Arm describes his approach of “vocalizing” rather than singing, and how playing guitar with this band changed how he thought about song arrangements. Steve Turner talks about his discovery of vintage fuzz boxes and how they informed the Mudhoney sound at a time when fuzz pedals were out of fashion. From the early days of Sub Pop to rocking baby blue 60s guitars to Dan Peters' unique drum patterns to Matt Lukin's relief of playing simple songs to Sonic Youth knighting them as the next big thing to a pivotal moment in Seattle music, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

Host Chris Shiflett starts things off with a discussion on the musical context McCready emerged from. “If you didn't have this punk rock background, then you were looked down upon,” remembers McCready. As he explains, his upbringing was less punk rock and more Cub Scouts until he picked up the guitar. He and PJ rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard preferred the likes of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, and after Gossard caught McCready shredding Stevie Ray Vaughan licks at a party, he phoned him up to start a two-guitar band. “I could only do what I knew how to do, which was play leads,” says McCready. A major turning point came for McCready when he witnessed Muddy Waters' performance in The Last Waltz. “It seemed like he could do more in one note than I was doing with all these thousands of notes,” he says. The observation led him to give up shredding and move in an emotion-driven, blues-rooted direction. That spirit drives the soaring solo on “Alive,” which McCready cut with a 1962 Japanese Reissue Stratocaster, a Tubescreamer, and a Marshall JCM800. McCready reveals how Jimi Hendrix's sounds on “Machine Gun” influenced his own performance. After the lesson, McCready answers questions about how “Alive” has changed over the years, Eddie Vedder's punk-ish rhythm playing, and why he smashed a Strat onstage last year. Best of all? Shifty finally gets a proper “guitar store lick” from his guest. Click below to subscribe to the podcast!
