This is the origin story of Gracie Abrams going on stage and telling everyone to "kick it in the dick". It wasn't meant as a prank, but she did then say it a few times in her show in front of thousands of kiwi fans...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We’re back, betches—and this time, live from Auckland for Nova’s Red Room Global Tour! In today’s ep, we chat to the stunning and effortlessly chill Gracie Abrams ahead of her Spark Arena gig (barefoot, of course). Joel admits he may have “over-strummed” during the chat, Tim tries to convince us she complimented his outfit, and Ricki’s in full Beyoncé meltdown mode after Cowboy Carter kicked off in LA. Plus, the team recount Joel’s chaotic airport behaviour (lost engagement ring, new AirPods, possible nap-induced blackout), we run through which celebrity kids we low-key find annoying (controversial!), and find out why Gracie’s post-show wind-down involves LEGO and zero socialising.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We're backstage in Auckland with the one and only Gracie Abrams just hours before she hits the stage—and let us tell you, she's cool as a cucumber (for now). We chat about everything from journaling her way into songwriting to acoustic chaos at Fire Aid, and why Maine (yes, the lobster place) is her ultimate happy place. Plus, Gracie drops her hot post-show routine (hint: adult LEGO), dishes on her lyric-writing style, and lets us do some dramatic reciting of her lyrics—because obviously. She's funny, grounded, and ready to take on Australia… if we don’t steal her spotlight first.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Taylor Swift isn't just a world-conquering pop star at the top of her game, her approach to songwriting has also proven massively influential for an up-and-coming generation of singer-songwriters. Gracie Abrams, Maisie Peters, and Phoebe Bridgers—all of whom opened for Swift during her Eras Tour—each owe a debt to Swift's hyperspecific lyrics, minimal melodies, and bombastic bridges. We break down the key aspects of Swift's songcraft and how we can hear them manifest in the work of her young acolytes, and we speak to another burgeoning artist, the brilliant Jensen McRae, to learn firsthand why Swift's style has been so resonant. This week, we review THE SECRET OF US by GRACIE ABRAMS with special guest Alison Mink & Sean Wilkinson!
I thought it would be fun to do a year-in-review of the music of 2024 with my friend James McCrae. Neither of us are music experts, but we're constantly sharing music with each other. James first came on the show in 2020, when we did a similar review of the music from that wild quarantine year when artists weren't touring and we all missed live shows. Fast forward to 2024, and we chat about what we've noticed over the last five years, including the changes in the music industry, trends we've seen, and of course, what we've had on repeat.James, a Bob Dylan super-fan, talks about his evolving tastes, new genres, and how pop and hyperpop have influenced his music choices. He also shares his insights on the current music scene and the role of streaming, social media, and live performances.James is an author, poet, artist, and founder of Sunflower Club, a global community dedicated to conscious creativity. Gracie Abrams is a singer and songwriter from Los Angeles. She started putting out music in 2020, and in June 2024, she put out her second album, The Secret of Us. She was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist, and this year she's up for another Grammy, for Best Duo Performance, for her collaboration with Taylor Swift. But for this episode, I talked to Gracie about her song “I Love You, I'm Sorry.” It was produced by Aaron Dessner, at Long Pond Studio in upstate New York, and it was co-written with Audrey Hobert.Coming up, you'll hear the isolated tracks from the studio recording, but you'll also get to hear a lot of the voice memos that Gracie recorded during the writing process. I think it's so nice to have these raw moments documented because, as you'll hear, they give you an insight not just into the song, but into the relationship that Gracie and her co-writer Audrey have as friends. For more, visit songexploder.net/gracie-abrams.
