Few musicians today stay as busy as Aaron Bibelhauser. Not only is he a prolific songwriter and one half of the twin brother-led bluegrass band called The Bibelhauser Brothers, but he hosts a notable bluegrass music radio show, collaborates with several other artists on albums and singles and leads a community jam session periodically in his home city of Louisville. The only mystery about Aaron is when does he sleep? Aaron and his twin Adam, who splits vocals with his brother, plays bass, contributes to the writing and production of songs, and naturally offers beautiful blood harmony to the group, joined Roots Music Rambler this week to talk about the group's new singles, a potential new album, collaborations and more. We discussed their journey to be musicians, and their history with a previous band called Relic as well. While Adam has a day job and is a full-time dad, Aaron is busy writing, performing and producing. He's penned songs for Del McCoury, Michael Cleveland, and the Louisville Shakespeare Festival, and produced a tribute album for Mickey Clark. He's also the host of Bluegrass Evolution, a Sunday night bluegrass radio program on WFPK (91.9 FM) in Louisville.  Also on the show, Frank and Falls discuss Grammy snubs and take a listen to Stephen Wilson Jr.'s astonishing new cover of Ben E. King's standard “Stand By Me,” which lit up the Live at the Print Shop video concert series recently.  Don't forget you can now show your support of the show with Roots Music Rambler's new merch, now available at rootsmusicrambler.com/store. Episode #299: While the public has become hyper aware of Billy Strings on his rocket ride to the top of bluegrass, only a small retinue of the music's traditional veteran artists have achieved popular name recognition. I think especially of Del McCoury and Ricky Skaggs. But there's a deeper world there, and we should work a little harder to shine the light on more of the old school masters working today. That's what episode #299 of The String is about, through conversations with singer Danny Paisley and mandolinist John Reischman. Paisley, who grew up in a bluegrass family band a few miles from the McCourys is a four time IBMA Male Vocalist of teh Year. Reishman is a Californian who early on played in the first Tony Rice Unit before starting his 25-year band the Jaybirds. They are “musicians' musicians,” which doesn't help them put food on the table or build their legacies.

It is natural that a second generation bluegrass banjo player would have soaked up as much of Earl Scruggs' style on the five string as possible when starting out; it is just as natural that they would push outside of those boundaries of the territory staked out by their pioneering forebears. In Tony Trischka's case, part of this instinct to turn bluegrass on its head early on in his career involved doing things like adding saxophone to an instrumental version of “Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms”, which began with a cacophonous drum solo. Now, we find the habitual trailblazer discovering and reinterpreting never before heard jams from none other than Earl Scruggs himself. It is a bit of a full circle moment, although that is not to say that Tony Trischka ever left the traditional bluegrass fold, either. He is and always was a banjo renaissance man, respected by fans of the roots music avant-garde and the three finger roll alike. In the past couple of years in his now nearly sixty year career, Tony Trischka has been excitedly traveling down an even deeper Earl Scruggs rabbit hole than even he could ever have imagined. Already at work on another book of re-transcriptions of Earl Scruggs' music, which had previously been transcribed by guitar players, a friend named Bob Piekel sent Tony over 200 home recordings of Earl made by John Hartford, which included other greats like Tony Rice, Mac Wiseman and Del McCoury playing for fun over many years in the 1980s and 1990s. These tapes revealed a side of Earl's playing, both in style and repertoire, that no one outside of those small circles of musicians ever heard, including multiple versions of songs like "Gentle on My Mind" and "Here Comes the Bride"; Earl playing blues licks on “Cripple Creek”; syncopations that he used only in those private settings. Brimming with inspiration, Tony Trischka crafted an album based on the John Hartford tapes, bringing in players like Sam Bush, Molly Tuttle, Michael Cleveland, Billy Strings and Mark Schatz, to record his new collection titled Earl Jam: A Tribute To Earl Scruggs. Tony Trischka plays banjo alongside Darol Anger on fiddle Just after Earl Scruggs' 100th birth anniversary, and just ahead of his own 75th trip around the sun, I sat with Tony Trischka at the Earl Scruggs Center following his performance at the Remembering Earl concert, which included the Travelin' McCourys and Jerry Douglas. This episode contains the bulk of that conversation, which was also partially excerpted in our earlier episode titled “An Update, and Two Quick Takes With Tony Trischka and Travis Book”, which includes a portion of Tony's interview that does not appear here. Songs heard in this episode:“John Henry Medley: John Henry/Bonaparte's Retreat/Twists and Turns” by Tony Trischka, from Territory“Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms” by Tony Trischka, from Heartlands, excerpt“Quite Early Morning” by Pete Seeger, from Pete Seeger: The Smithsonian Folkways Collection, excerpt“Dooley” by Tony Trischka, featuring Molly Tuttle and Sam Bush”, from Earl Jam: A Tribute To Earl Scruggs Thank you so much for visiting! LISTEN: Brett Kretzer grew up in Maryland and lived in a few East Coast states before moving to Colorado. He's been playing music since he was six when his mother forced him to take piano lessons. While he gave up after about a year, he decided at the age of nine that he wanted to learn the guitar. When his brother became interested in playing the guitar as well (thanks to his interest in Kretzer's lessons), Kretzer learned the drums so that the two could play together. They both started various bands in middle and high school, transitioning from rock to more hardcore music like punk and finally to metal. After college, Kretzer also fell into the world of bluegrass. He started learning the mandolin when he was about 21, and he's been playing bluegrass ever since. He remembers Led Zeppelin as the first band that had a major influence on him, as well as The Beatles and bluegrass influences such as Del McCoury, Hot Rize, and The Punch Brothers. He loves it when the crowd is attentive and invested in the music, as everyone involved can forget about everything but the music for a little bit. Recently, he's loved arranging public-domain bluegrass songs more than writing them from scratch, and he also teaches mandolin and some guitar.Scott Slay has also been performing for a large chunk of his life. Starting from the age of eight, he learned and played bluegrass music in bands with his father, Tracy. Because he lived in a Navy town, musicians came and went constantly, so the lineup of his father's band changed consistently as well.He says that many factors contributed to his ultimate success, including always learning new songs (or even old songs in new ways), primarily learning them by ear and feel (sometimes because he was so tired in the evenings he would play he could barely keep his eyes open). He is also inspired to travel by the musicians he met along the way.Slay says that through this process and constant dedication to the craft of music, he learned bluegrass like someone would learn their home language. He loves collaborating through composing, arranging, or interpreting various bluegrass pieces, and he constantly adds something new to his musical repertoire to keep himself interested. Currently, he plays with the bluegrass band SLAY, and in 2019, he released the album The Rail under his name, collaborating with various other bluegrass peers. You can see Kretzer and Slay perform at Eldora, 2861 Eldora Ski Road in Nederland, as part of the Fireside in Timbers Lodge series, on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 1 p.m. Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear podcast featuring the news and culture from peak to peak.SUBSCRIBE ONLINE and use the COUPON CODE PODCAST FOR A 10% Discount for ALL NEW SUBSCRIBERS https://www.themtnear.com/subscribe/ You can find us online by visiting https://www.themtnear.com/Find us on Facebook @mtnearYou can contact our editor at info@themountainear.com.Thank you for listening.

This week, songs and stories from a trio of Grammy award winning world class songwriters recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, commentary from these three musical musketeers. Featured on this show are world renowned songwriter Roger Cook, award winning Memphis singer-songwriter Keith Sykes, and singer-songwriter and session musician Shawn Camp. Born in Bristol, England, Roger Cook is recognized as one of the world's greatest modern songwriters. During his lengthy international songwriting career, Roger has had more than 80 top 30 hits, including classics such as Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart – Gene Pitney, Something Tells Me – Cilla Black, Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress – The Hollies, and You've Got Your Troubles – The Fortunes. However, Roger is perhaps best known for his song I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing, which was recorded by the New Seekers and became the theme song for a long-running series of Coca-Cola commercials. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Cook_(songwriter) Once upon a time in the summer of 1967, Keith Sykes hitchhiked to the Newport Folk Festival and saw Arlo Guthrie perform “Alice's Restaurant.” In the fall of that year he got a copy of the album, learned the whole song and sang it at a Holiday Inn in Charleston, South Carolina. They hired him on the spot for a regular gig playing music in the hotel. In the more than 40 years that followed, he would become a troubadour and storyteller, a massively successful songwriter with more than 100 songs recorded by artists as diverse as Rosanne Cash and George Thorogood. He would tour every corner of America and play in just about every conceivable kind of venue, appear on Saturday Night Live and Austin City Limits, and host songwriter nights on Memphis' legendary Beale Street with many of music's most talented songwriters. He would join Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, tour the country and record the Volcano album – the title track for which he co-wrote with Jimmy. - http://www.keithsykes.com/ Some careers can be described with a couple of words but Shawn Camp's isn't one of them. A bold and distinctive singer and a songwriter who's provided material for artists ranging from Ralph Stanley, Del McCoury and Ricky Skaggs to Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Porter Wagoner, Loretta Lynn and Brooks & Dunn with hits such as “Two Pina Coladas” (Garth Brooks,) “Nobody But Me” (Blake Shelton,) “Would You Go With Me” (Josh Turner,) “River Of Love” (George Strait,) and Billy Currington's hit single “Love Done Gone.)  Along with being a hit writer, he is a gifted multi-instrumentalist who's played as a touring/recording musician with everyone from Jerry Reed, Trisha Yearwood, Shelby Lynn and Alan Jackson to the Osborne Brothers, Guy Clark and John Prine.  Camp also co-produced a compilation tribute album for his friend and hero Guy Clark which was #1 on the Americana Charts for several weeks in the spring of 2012 and voted Americana Album Of The Year 2012. - https://shawncamp.com/bio In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1981 archival recording of Ozark original Buddy Lancaster performing the tune “Fire on the Mountain,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In this week's guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater explores regional variations of the traditional folk song “Going to the West.”

Del McCoury has earned every honor and award one can win in his field, and he's built historic bridges from American folk and roots to the realms of jam band rock and roll, thanks to his open heart and a blazing band that for more than 25 years has included his sons Ron and Rob. The other project covered here is a collection of lost instrumentals written by Bill Monroe himself but revived and recorded for the first time by mandolinist Mike Compton.
