Everything gets better when you get outside. But how do you make that bridge to the woods and waters for kids in metro areas or folks with mobility challenges?Wilderness Inquiry has been on a mission since 1978 to do just that: make sure everyone, regardless of their abilities, has access to the outdoors. Whether those experiences are day hikes with elementary-aged children or month-long expeditions, it's Nell Holden's job to put fulfill that mission statement. In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, she shares details about expedition planning, the history behind this non-profit's development, and the rewards of spending time in nature.
This week's episode is with adventurer, polar explorer, environmentalist, Minnesotan, and wonderfully nice guy Paul Schurke!! Paul is a legend in the adventure world- completing multiple expeditions to the North Pole (including an unsupported trip in the 80s), dogsledding across Siberia (to convince the US and Soviet Union to open the Bering Strait to help out Inuit families), following in the footsteps of Teddy Roosevelt's River of Doubt expedition in the Amazon, crossing South Georgia Island by the same route as Ernest Shackleton, and so much more. He now lives on and is a huge proponent for the protection of the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota (one of my favorite places on the planet), helped establish the Wilderness Inquiry (a program which has the mission of outdoor adventures from all walks of life) and spends his time running the Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge in Ely, Minnesota. In what became one of my favorite episodes yet, you will hear all about a lifetime of adventure with a wonderful storyteller!! Can't wait to share this one with you all!! Big thanks to my dad for telling me that I have to reach out to Paul after reading "Northland" by Porter Fox. The lesson is...always listen to your dad! An outdoor industry lifestyle brand, Toad&Co has a bold mission: “To lead with integrity and weave optimism into everything they do; To create meaningful change through socially and environmentally smart business; and To inspire people to live their fullest lives”. Toad&Co has a motto: “Dirty is the new clean. Wear more. Gordon explains how this project has evolved over the years, and led to the creation of the Outdoor Access for All Tour in 2016. In collaboration with the National Park Foundation and Wilderness Inquiry, Toad&Co helped get 1,000 adults with disabilities into national parks in 2016.
