Today's episode is part of a solo series on Reimagining Love about Family of Origin Roles (a.k.a. FOO roles). We're exploring how the roles we were cast into as children and held within our family systems shape how we show up in our relationships today. Whether you were the one who held the family together, the rebel who pushed back against household norms, or the “easy” kid who flew under the radar, we all inhabited a position in the community of our family and absorbed certain messages about love, connection, and worthiness as a result. Check out the introductory episode of the series if you missed it! All previous role-specific episodes are also linked below. We're taking a look at “The Parentified Child” role in today's episode. The child cast into this role likely heard that they were “so mature,” “wise beyond their years,” or were praised for their comforting presence when they were growing up. The problem? Kids shouldn't have to provide emotional support to the adults in their family. Unfortunately for the Parentified Child, this felt like the surest route to safety and love, perhaps due to a chaotic environment, overwhelmed parents, or conflict in the family system. As an adult, the Parentified Child carries with them a certain set of beliefs and tendencies that they picked up as a kid in this role. Does this sound like you, or someone you love? Listen to the episode to learn more about this role and how The Parentified Child can free themselves from always taking on others' needs and create more egalitarian relationships that feel safe and nourishing.Relevant links:Reimagining Love episode with Dr. Hillary McBride: Getting Present: Tuning Into Your Body with Dr. Hillary McBrideReimagining Love series: “I Love My Partner, But Their Family is Toxic”: Part 1, Part 2Girlhood Interrupted: The Erasure of Black Girls' Childhood (Rebecca Epstein, Jamilia J. We're excited for what's ahead! Until then, know we're cheering you on and love you so much. ... Friends, today we're diving deep into the heart of our favorite topic: inclusion! We chat about the barriers preventing true inclusion and we're challenging societal norms and asking the important questions about what defines human worth. What kind of person gets to be celebrated? What kind of person with Down syndrome gets to be celebrated? We explore the buzzword status of “inclusion,” the role of privilege in accessing support and services, and so much more. As we navigate this journey, we recognize the honor and burden of advocating for a more inclusive world. Progress in inclusion is happening, but are we truly championing the essence of every individual? Is the current system promoting equal access and opportunities? We're asking all the questions, you don't want to miss this thought-provoking episode! --- SHOW NOTES Learn more about regional assembly member Mar Galcerán's! Other episodes to check out: 17. Today's episode is part of a solo series on Reimagining Love about Family of Origin Roles (a.k.a. FOO roles). Tune in on the first two Tuesdays of each month to learn about how the roles we were cast into as children and held within our family systems shape how we show up in our relationships today. Whether you were the one who held the family together, the rebel who pushed back against household norms, or the “easy” kid who flew under the radar, we all inhabited a position in the community of our family and absorbed certain messages about love, connection, and worthiness as a result. Check out the introductory episode of the series if you missed it!We're taking a look at “The Struggling One” role in today's episode. In some families, there is an individual who needs more care and attention than others. There are a number of reasons why this might be the case, including a difference in ability, a behavioral challenge, or a mental health condition. In any case, the “struggling one” is the recipient of a lot of the family system's energy, and this dynamic may lead to certain challenges and strengths for that person in adulthood. Does this sound like you, or someone you love? Listen to the episode to learn more about this role and how The Struggling One can embark on their healing journey.Relevant links:Minorities Less Likely to Be Identified for Special Education, Study Finds (EducationWeek)‘Boys are disappearing' from mental health care as signs of depression go undetected (NBC News)Girls With Social and/or Attention Deficit Re-Examined in Young Adulthood: Prospective Study of Diagnostic Stability, Daily Life Functioning and Social Situation (National Library of Medicine)The "Spoon Theory" (Christine Miserandino, www.butyoudontlooksick.com)Take the Family of Origin Roles QuizReimagining Love: “Tending to ‘Little You' & Exploring Your Family of Origin”Dr. Alexandra's Psychotherapy Networker ArticleOrder Dr. Alexandra's book, Love Every DaySubscribe to Dr. Alexandra's NewsletterSubmit a Listener Question

Send Kira a text message! In theater and in the arts world, self advocacy can feel almost impossible, especially for artists who so often feel they're replaceable. In a lot of ways, that assumption is true and something we as an industry need to work on changing. Being able to advocate for yourself helps lay the groundwork for inclusion. Waiting to advocate for yourself can lead to a lot more stress, tension, and negative things that make communication difficult. And it leads to issues that can't make for an inclusive environment where people feel safe or supported or empowered. I recently had a personal experience that made me really stop and consider the best way to advocate for our needs without feeling like you're being difficult or rude. I have a way into this conversation that might sound like it's not theater related, but I encourage you to go with me on this. I promise I'll bring it back to theater quickly!Grab all the links and resources mentioned in this episode athttps://www.inclusivestages.com/post/why-everyone-pays-when-you-wait-to-self-advocateConnect with Kira:@kiratroilo @artandsoulconsulting @inclusivestages"'Black Hair'" Is Hair: An Entertainment Industry Guide WebsiteBecome a PatronJoin our mailing list - scroll to the bottom of the pageThanks for joining me on this episode of Inclusive Stages! Information Specialist Eric Stoker interviewed Lee Kohler to hear how she started her self-advocacy journey, how she navigated college, what accommodations she used and so much more.
Self-advocacy by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities has become a big part of the disability movement's approach to this part of our community. Essentially it means that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can and should be supported to speak for themselves, help make policy, serve on boards, and more. Sadly, too often organizations use the term “Self Advocate” simply to get grants or “street cred”. Today's guest, Brittanie Hernandez-Wilson, helped make Self-Advocacy more than a “buzz word” when she was the Equity and Justice Director, at the ARC Minnesota. Hear her explain what it takes to transform disability organizations into places that are truly representative of and accountable to the communities they serve. This program was produced by Jacob Lesner-Buxton, hosted by Shelley Berman, and edited by Denny Daughters and Dominick Trevethan. Gravity - The Digital Agency Power Up : Weekly shows for digital marketing agency owners.
Nobody like a showoff? ( Really? ) Personally I've always admired people who could authentically self advocate. It's something most people ( me ) struggle with. LinkedIn reflects the wider business community in as much as, despite appearances, it's a world of wall flowers. It's like those humiliating school discos where there are a few noisy confident kids in the middle and the rest of us standing around the edge looking at our shoes and waiting to be *asked* to dance.( Well - Don't wait to be asked.. It didn't help in school and it's not helping now. )In this episode, Gus Bahndal, a marketing strategist and social media specialist, dives deep into the world of LinkedIn, sharing his insights and very actionable strategies to help you stand out and grow your business. Here are a few highlights from our conversation:
Our guest this week is Sam Farmer of North Easton, MA who is an Information Technology Consultant, a neurodiversity advocate, an Autistic writer, author, speaker, a husband and father of a son with Autism and himself was diagnosed later in life with Asperger's. BJ Stasio is an advocate and activist based in Buffalo, New York. He is passionate about advocating for disability rights and improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. BJ relies on personal care attendants and self-direction support staff to support him in his daily activities and advocacy work. He is dedicated to giving back to the community and believes in the power of storytelling to create positive change.Episode Summary:In this episode of DSP Talk, host Gina Scarpa interviews BJ Stasio, an advocate and activist who receives support from a provider organization in Buffalo, New York. BJ shares his interests, such as football and taking naps, and discusses the supports he relies on to live the life he wants. He highlights the importance of having dedicated direct support professionals (DSPs) who understand his advocacy work and respect his autonomy. BJ also emphasizes the need for better wages and recognition for DSPs in the caring field. Throughout the conversation, BJ's passion for advocacy and his appreciation for the DSPs in his life shine through.Key Takeaways:BJ Stasio relies on personal care attendants and self-direction support staff to support him in his daily activities and advocacy work.A great DSP is someone who understands the importance of advocacy, supports the individual's goals, and encourages self-care.DSPs should not speak for an individual but rather provide support in the background, allowing the individual to advocate for themselves.Wages and labor classification for DSPs are important issues that need to be addressed to recognize their value and contribution to the caring field.Advocates should tell their stories and work together to create positive change for individuals with disabilities.Notable Quotes:"One thing that is important for [you] to say now is, thank you for what you do for me. It's important to know [they/DSPs] are valued.” - BJ Stasio"[My DSPs] are dedicated to my mission of advocating for others, but at the same time, helping me realize that I need to take care of myself, too, because self-care is important." - BJ Stasio“I always believe it's important to give back because of all those people who have helped me have the life that I want” - BJ Stasio"Important issues that are on the table, of course, are the wages and the labor classification that DSP should have with the federal government to be recognized as a part of the caring field." - BJ Stasio"The future for me is limitless… Tell your story, because it does matter." - BJ StasioResources:SANYS: Self-Advocacy Association of New York State - SANYS: Self-Advocacy Association of NYSThe Office for People with Developmental Disabilities Self-Direction - Self-Direction | Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (ny.gov)The Regional Center for Workforce Transformation - Regional Centers for Workforce Transformation | Code of Ethics & Core Competencies for Direct Support ProfessionalsTo listen to the full episode and gain more insights from BJ Stasio's advocacy journey and the importance of DSPs in his life, tune in to the DSP Talk podcast. Friends, we had another hot topic in our group text that we knew we needed to bring on the pod to have with all of you! Today we're chatting about the February 25th episode of “Saturday Night Live” with a guest host who used his niece and her Down syndrome diagnosis as a punch line to his set. We're talking about our reactions and the larger conversation: who has the right to use Down syndrome and disability as a joke or punch line? Join us as we discuss the discomfort when jokes are made for an audience not connected to someone with Down syndrome and whether the laugh is at the expense of the person with the disability. Throwback Episode 208. Growing Through Uncomfortable Conversations (w/Ashley - TLFP Producer & Self-Advocate - Originally aired 5/23/23) Friends, we recognize and appreciate that so many of you come to us for our open, honest, and candid conversations week after week. After seeing the response Heather was receiving over on @theluckyfewoffical under a post that she wouldn't be celebrating an abled person asking a disabled person to prom, we knew this topic deserved another conversation. We also knew the conversation deserved to include a person with disabilities. Our producer and self-advocate Ashley Fraccalossi joins us for this candid conversation on honoring people with disabilities and when that line can get blurred or crossed. She helps break down with us what inspiration p*rn means in the disabled community, unconscious bias, and how her own experiences with disability have shaped her views on this topic.
