The traditional broadcast world has endured a seismic shift or two – or ten. Steve Cochran has been in front of a microphone and up and down the dial for all of it. For more than three decades he's been a fixture on Chicago radio. That includes audio brands like WLUP, WMVP, WIND, WLS, and more than 16 years on WGN. During this episode of the Crisis Cast, Cochran is quick to say that the companies with AM radio signals need to focus on being bigger than that. Plus, he talks about his lifelong pursuit to advocate against bullying. Lissa & Thom learn who inspired his passion to fight for kids' rights, why he can't keep politics off his radio shows, and his fascinating life journey as an adoptee.
Tiffany and Beau continue the final hour by spending some time with former Chicago Bears Guard and now Analyst for WMVP and The Chicago Bears Radio Network Tom Thayer! Tiffany, Beau, and Tom discuss Tiffany's Dad and Tom going head to head in a Super Bowl, what it was like blocking for Walter Payton, what the Falcons are getting in Darnell Mooney, why Darnell Mooney has had down seasons these past two season after having a nice season 2021, why the Justin Fields trade market has seemed to dry up, how happy Tom is to see Kirk Cousins leave the NFC North, and if he has more Jim McMahon or Mike Ditka stories.
In the final hour of this Wednesday edition of The Morning Shift, Tiffany Blackmon and Beau Morgan kick off the final hour by giving some people Wake Up Calls! The Morning Shift crew also allows callers to hand out some Wake Up Calls as well. It's been some 20 months since Marc Silverman revealed to his audience on WMVP, ESPN 1000 in Chicago he had cancer. It was a form of lymphoma and like former Blackhawks TV analyst Eddie Olczyk had done 2 1/2 years earlier, he decided to go public. It allowed him to better cope with the disease saying he opened up more every time he spoke about it. “Silvy” as he's best known was besieged with well wishers, another uplifting experience. Today Silvy says he has 99 percent of his energy and everything's great. He's now in his 16th year of partnership with Tom Waddle, the former wide receiver for the Bears. The Waddle and Silvy show is heard weekday afternoons. In part two of this very revealing episode Silvy remembers how he was a fan in the stands when the White Sox won the World Series In Houston and the his beloved Cubs won it all in Cleveland. He also discusses his early days in talk radio when he angered White Sox and Bulls chairman of the board Jerry Reinsdorf during a show and his relationship with guests such as Charles Barkley and Michael Wilbon.Tell me a story I don't know is now part of the Sports Media Watch podcast (sportsmediawatch.com) so please follow @paulsen_smw. For nearly 39 years, Mark Giangreco was the face of Chicago television sports. He was creative, irreverent, wickedly funny and controversial. It caught up with him in January when a remark he made about one of the news anchors resulted in his departure from WLS-TV after a 24 year run. He spent the first 15 at the NBC affiliate having arrived from Louisville, a fresh face on the verge of turning 30. It didn't take long for his somewhat whacky and wise cracking style to catch on. He was a central figure in the local TV sports wars entangling several other notable sports anchors in what made for a riveting rivalry. Whether it was an ill fated though widely watched pairing with ex Chicago Bear Steve “Mongo” McMichael or celebrated battles with his competitors, Giangreco thrived. “Back then (the late 80s and 90s) you could get away with anything” admitted Giangreco. “It was renegade, Wild West TV.” He was also paired with reporter Janet Davies for WLS-TV's new year's eve celebrations and it was ratings smash for 22 years! She too, was dismissed from the station.Giangreco remains a contributor to WMVP's afternoon sports talk show and appears as if he's not quite ready to call it a career. Then again he could turn to hot rod cars, a long time passion but don't bet on it. There's plenty of gas left in this celebrated sportscaster's tank.Hear him on this edition of "Tell Me a Story I Don't Know" and make sure to subscribe/rate and review us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc.!!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

One part didn't do David Kaplan justice. That's why “Tell me a story I don't know” needed two to encompass just a fraction of what “Kap” has accomplished during his illustrious career. He tells stories in such vivid detail and there's a reason for it: Kaplan claims he has a photographic memory! So his description of breaking a story that never happened is so nuanced and colorful. Kaplan wound up submarining a trade of Scottie Pippen for Shawn Kemp. But there's more such as his desire to to interview someone the rest of his WGN Radio co-horts passed on..one involving Johnnie Cochran, the man who defended the notorious OJ Simpson.Kaplan has interviewed thousands but the ones that got away were Michael Jordan and George Steinbrenner but there's the “Big Whale” still out there Kaplan would like to lasso and you'll find out by downloading and subscribing.Kaplan continues his dominance in Chicago media as the co-host of “Kap and Hood” on WMVP radio along with his myriad other jobs and rabid postings on social media. And one could imagine his rolodex of contacts growing. He has some 16,000! There's no one like him so please enjoy part two with “Kap”. For years, Marc was a supporter of the V Foundation, raising money and awareness through his show each year around the ESPYS. It became more personal for him this year, when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for which he is undergoing treatment. We talk about the emotions of his diagnosis, why he chose to make his cancer journey public and how being a cancer patient during the COVID-19 pandemic adds an additional layer of stress.
