On November 24, 1963, Jack Ruby stepped out of the shadows of a crowded Dallas police basement and shot Lee Harvey Oswald live on national television, silencing the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy forever. In a single moment, Ruby opened a canyon of doubt and conspiracy that has never closed, cementing himself as one of the most mysterious and controversial figures in modern history. To the public, he was a Dallas strip club owner and midnight hustler, a man of wild and irreconcilable contradictions who could beat a patron into the concrete  one moment, and weep over a sad news story, buy groceries for a struggling mother, or cook tender lamb chops for his beloved dogs the next. But who was the man beneath the dark fedora? In this first episode of our deep-dive series, we takes a wander back to the core of the JFK story to understand the volatile behavior of this highly complex individual by looking past the neon lights of the Carousel Club and rewinding the tape to where it all began.To trace the roots of Ruby's explosive violence, we travel back to March 25, 1911, and the crowded, impoverished immigrant streets of Chicago's West Side. Born Jacob Rubenstein, he was the fifth of eight living children born to Joseph and Fanny Rubenstein, Polish Jewish immigrants who had fled the violent, repressive rule of Tsarist Russia. Growing up in what his own family described as a below-middle-class ghetto on Morgan Street, Jacob's world was defined by coal smoke, ethnic street fights, and extreme domestic trauma. The Rubenstein home was a toxic pressure cooker of parental strife and heavy violence, driven by his father's severe alcoholism and explosive rages, leading to constant police interventions and an eventual family disintegration when Jacob was just ten years old.As his family collapsed, Jacob watched his mother, Fanny, descend into severe, tragic mental illness. Plagued by a bizarre, lifelong delusion that a sharp fishbone was permanently lodged in her throat, she spent years dragging her children to clinics, eventually slipping into intense paranoia and being committed to Elgin State Hospital in 1937. Left to run wild, Jacob dropped out of school by the eighth grade to become a street hustler, earning the lifelong nickname "Sparky"—a name born of his awkward walk or lightning-fast temper, which he so thoroughly despised that he would instantly attack anyone who dared say it to his face. Despite the childhood neglect, Jacob remained deeply devoted to his mother, internalizing her frantic anxieties and intense volatility in ways that would profoundly shape his adult life.By age eleven, Jacob's truancy and incorrigible behavior at home led to an evaluation by the Institute for Juvenile Research. The resulting 1922 psychiatric report is a chillingly prophetic document, describing an egocentric, quick-tempered, and highly erratic child desperate for attention he could never receive at home. Declared a dependent ward of the state, Jacob was torn from his siblings and isolated in foster homes, fostering a desperate need to "be a somebody" that would follow him all the way to the Carousel Club. Decades later, both the Warren Commission and his defense attorney, Melvin Belli, would weaponize this traumatic past—with Belli claiming that in Ruby's highly emotional, shattered mind, shooting Oswald was a bizarre attempt to protect a grieving Jacqueline Kennedy, substituting the First Lady for the broken mother he could never save in Chicago. Join us as we begin this miniseries, uncovering how the scars of Chicago's streets paved the way for the fateful basement in Dallas.

Fujimori faces an immediate crisis with the expected arrival of El Niño in September, which threatens the fishing industry and may cause floods. Transnational criminal organizations involved in extortion and illegal mining present a strategic threat to property rights and small businesses. Additionally, China's construction of the Chancay port and heavy mining investments have granted Beijing significant political leverage. Snow on the road across Canterbury might further deepen a problem residents have been reporting to local councils. Christchurch City Council has received reports of more than 3,500 potholes over the last year. Selwyn District recorded over 7000. It comes after earlier this year, Transport Minister Chris Bishop said 98 percent of potholes across the country's state highways were being fixed within 24 hours. Anatoly Zak recounts the July 1976 Soviet launch of the Salyut 5 mission, a secret military reconnaissance project camouflaged as civilian research. The mission, dubbed the "Keystone Cosmonauts," was plagued by accidents, including a truck blocking a fuel train and a failed automated docking system. Onboard, the crew faced extreme stress, power failures, and a mysterious illness that incapacitated one cosmonaut. These failures forced an emergency landing and a premature end to the expedition. The group revealed that the Fulani Muslim militia is by far the most deadly force in the persecution of Christians worldwide. They kill Christians at a rate 4.4 times that of other Muslims. Thus far, they have killed 79,323 people in six years — amounting to 36 people a day. They kill at 3 times the rate of Boko Haram. That's twenty times the number of people that have been killed in the US-Iran war this year.  Senegal, Africa: Marriage is between one man and one woman The National Assembly of the West African country of Senegal has defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Homosexuality is still legal in 21 out of 54 African countries. So far, homosexual faux marriage has been incorporated in one nation -- South Africa. U.S.-Iran war is back on America's war with Iran is back on, and the Middle East is in flames.   The U.S. military bombed dozens of military targets yesterday. The Saudis also bombed the Yemen airport. The Houthi-controlled Yemeni government is an ally with Iran in the present war. The Center for Strategic and International Studies reports a depletion of one-third to one-half of American Patriot, Tomahawk, and Terminal High Altitude Areas Defense missiles. At current rates, the replenishment will take four years. This does not include the use of missiles during the period of May through July.  Trump Meme coin tanked; Bitcoin down by 50% The Trump Meme coin has tanked — costing investors $3.8 billion. The president received $636 million from the venture, according to a recent financial disclosure.  However, Bitcoin has also lost half its value since the Trump election in November 2024. Total losses are running about $2.2 trillion for investors. Gold capitalization has increased about 3% since November 2025. 122,000 American layoffs The website Layoffs.fyi records 122,000 layoffs this year. That's the highest rate in four years.  Amazon is leading the pack for corporate layoffs with a total of 30,000 layoffs over the last nine months. America produces more oil than Saudi Arabia and Russia America is now, by far, the largest oil producer in the world — now producing 42% more than Saudi Arabia, and 37% more than Russia. Back in 2008, the United States produced about half of what Saudi Arabia and Russia produced. That has changed dramatically in the last 17 years.  GOP Senator Mitch McConnell rejects rumors he's braindead Republican Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky broke the silence and intrigue surrounding his lengthy hospital stay. Rumors had swirled that the senator was braindead or under cardiac arrest after he was transferred to the hospital. The senator has clarified that he had suffered a fall, but he did not break bones or suffer a concussion. Senator Lindsey Graham met his maker Longtime Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina went to meet his Maker on Saturday night. According to the D.C. office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Graham died of a ruptured aorta brought on by chronic heart disease. Graham, age 71, was never married and never had children. SC Gov appointed Lindsey Graham's sister to serve remainder of term South Carolina Republican Governor Henry McMaster announced Monday that he has appointed the late Senator's sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to serve the remainder of his term. When Lindsey Graham was 20, his mother died of Hodgkin's lymphoma at age 50, and his father died 15 months later of a heart attack at age 68. Because his sister, then 13 years old, was left orphaned, the service allowed Graham to attend the University of South Carolina in Columbia so he could remain near home as his sister's legal guardian. Here's a portion of Governor McMaster's press conference. McMASTER: “Today, under the law, it's my duty and honor to name someone to serve in the place this extraordinary man for the remainder of his term. “Lindsey took care of his little sister in years long departed. It's my honor to ask his little sister, Darlene Graham, to finish his work for him now. “And by the way, Darlene, I don't know if I told you, but after we spoke on the phone in the wee hours of Sunday morning, and you agreed to serve, through tears. Earlier, I had wondered what you would say, and I was humbled by your quickness to see the duty that you had to serve. “I called the president afterwards, and he thought it was a great idea, and I'm sure that everyone here does as well.” Obamacare premiums going higher Obamacare premiums are jacking up another 14% for next year.   That follows a 20% increase last year. The Peterson-KFF organization notes that the program lost three million members so far this year — now at a total of 19.2 million enrollments.  The average family of four pays $24,000 into Obamacare for this year, and $27,000 next year.  That compares to Samaritan Ministries Christian medical sharing that runs about $8,000 per year.  Hospitals treated COVID-shot rejectors as “plagued rats” Psalm 146:3 instructs us: “to not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help.” Recent Centers for Disease Control numbers indicate that 80% of Americans got at least one COVID shot. U.S. death rates, based on 2019 numbers, rose 17% in 2020 during the COVID crisis. After the vaccine came out in early 2021, the death rate increased again by 23% over 2019 levels. Then, the death rate increased by 16% in 2022. Death rates did not reduce to 2019 levels until 2024. Last year's death rate actually registered 4% less than 2019. Former trauma surgeon Dr. James Miller told podcast host Alix Mayer that those who did not take the Covid shot, after its rollout, were treated differently in hospitals, and in an inhumane manner, like “plagued rats.” Listen. MILLER: “Absolutely, the vaccinated and unvaccinated were treated differently. They started just denying basic health services to unvaccinated people, which spurned not giving diabetes medicine [and] you can't go see your family doctor. "Now, you could still get emergency care in the ER, but 100% you were treated differently. You were treated as a dirty, plagued rat. And this was common in social media. But it was no different in the hospital. The medical community is no different.” Next, Dr. Miller spoke of The Overton Window referring to the moment when an argument becomes politically acceptable to the mainstream population. In this case, it is more acceptable now, in 2026, for Americans to express their distrust of the medical establishment about how it handled the COVID shot rollout and how it mistreated the unvaccinated 20% of the population. The term, The Overton Window, is named after the American policy analyst Joseph Overton. Listen. MILLER: “I think part of why this is such a good time to talk about this is I think The Overton Window has shifted on the discussion. I think all people have realized the medical care system did not meet their expectations during COVID. “I think most people thought, before COVID, when you go to the doctor, they're going to help you out a bit, and you're going to get better, and they're going to wish you well. I think most people thought when I'm really sick, I'm going to go to the hospital and they're gonna help me out a lot and do their best and get me well. “After COVID, most people realized their doctors were there for themselves. Their doctors were more than happy to give them a toxic substance that would hurt them, like the COVID injection. And I think most people came to see that the hospitals were really killing fields.” 28 Georgia inmates got baptized after Bible studies The Grady County, Georgia Sheriff's department issued an official announcement over the weekend: 28 inmates got baptized! They had been faithfully attending Bible studies throughout the week, and confessed their faith in Christ.   The announcement said, “Together, we gathered in prayer, lifted our voices in worship, and celebrated these life-changing decisions. Moments like these serve as a reminder that hope, grace, and redemption are possible for everyone.” Back in March, another 14 inmates were baptized at a Franklin County jailhouse in Florida, according to Channel 7 News. PASTOR: “I'm going to baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And I'm baptizing you in the power of that cross I'm talking about today. All right, ready?” These inmates also attended Bible studies each week and heard sermons from local pastors. Inmate Ethan Vonier became a Christian behind bars. VONIER: “I found Christ in jail. I feel like the good Lord put me here. We're all doing better each day.” And inmate Robert Hill was grateful for a fresh start and a Biblical destiny. HILL: “It's a new beginning. Everybody in here probably wants a new beginning. You know, he gives it to you. You know what I mean? Gives you a fresh start.  Jeremiah 29:11 -- He has a plan for me. I know it. I want it. I'm going to get it.” Psalm 107:10-14 tells the story: “Those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, bound in affliction and irons—because they rebelled against the words of God, and despised the counsel of the Most High. Therefore, He brought down their heart with labor. They fell down, and there was none to help. Then, they cried out to the Lord in their trouble and He saved them out of their distresses. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events.On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers look at and discuss the political thriller The Manchurian Candidate, directed by John Frankenheimer and released in 1962 during the height of The Cuban Missile Crisis. This is the second John Frankenheimer film we have talked about in this series. The other film was Seven Days In May. The Manchurian Candidate stars Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh and Angela Lansbury. Laurence Harvey plays Raymond Shaw, a Korean War veteran who returns to America after receiving the Medal of Honour. During the war, him and his commanding officer Captain Bennett 'Ben' Marco (Sinatra) plus the rest of their platoon are captured by Soviet and Chinese soldiers. They were brainwashed and Shaw has been turned into a sleeper agent as part of a plot to overthrow the US government. Plagued by nightmares, Marco tries to uncover the plot before it is too late. Shaw's mother, Eleanor Iselin (Lansbury), is married to John Iselin. A senator whose career Eleanor is trying to manage. David and I had the privilege of working with Hiral, a young mother from India who was drowning in perfectionism, self-criticism, and the crushing weight of trying to be everything to everyone. Over the course of about two hours, we watched her transform from someone scoring 100% on depression, anxiety, guilt, shame, and hopelessness to feeling peaceful, relaxed, and genuinely joyful—with most scores dropping to zero. This wasn't magic. It was TEAM-CBT done systematically, with measurement, genuine empathy, paradoxical agenda setting, and powerful cognitive techniques. And yes, Hiral did most of the heavy lifting herself once we got out of her way. For those of you who attended or are reading this summary, I want to walk you through what happened—not just what we did, but why it worked. Because here's the thing: this will look deceptively simple. That's the trap. TEAM-CBT is among the hardest therapeutic approaches to master, precisely because each step exists on multiple levels and requires you to change before your patients can change. Let's dig in. The Setup: Who Was Hiral? Hiral is a mother of an almost-four-year-old son, living in a joint family in Gujarat, India, with her husband and in-laws. She's also studying to become a TEAM-CBT therapist herself, preparing for her Level 3 certification exam. But beneath these roles, Hiral was suffering: Feeling like a failure as a mother Constant self-criticism and perfectionism Trapped in a rigid family environment with little emotional support Isolated from friends, her own parents, and the vibrant life she once had Plagued by guilt, shame, anxiety, and hopelessness—all at 100% Sound familiar? I'll bet many of you have worked with someone like Hiral. Or maybe you've been Hiral at some point in your life. I know I have. T = Testing: The Emotional X-Ray Before we even said hello to Hiral, she completed the Brief Mood Survey—David's ultra-reliable, ultra-short measures of depression, anxiety, anger, happiness, and relationship satisfaction right now, in this moment. Her scores were staggering: Depression: 11/20 (moderate, with "sad," "down," and "hopeless" all elevated) Anxiety: 14/20 (moderate to severe) Anger: 14/20 (same intensity as anxiety) Happiness: 8/20 (very low) Relationship Satisfaction: 10/30 (significant dissatisfaction with her husband) Why this matters: Most therapists never measure how their patients feel. They think they know, but research shows therapist accuracy is around 3-10% on depression, suicidality, anxiety, and anger. Zero percent on suicidal urges. Think about that. Without measurement, you're flying blind. With it, you have an emotional X-ray that shows you exactly where the patient is hurting—and later, exactly how much you've helped (or haven't). TEAM-CBT Pearl: Testing isn't optional. It's the foundation. Measure at the start of every session, and measure again at the end. If you're scared to see the results, that's your ego talking. E = Empathy: The Zero Technique For the first 30-40 minutes, David and I did... nothing. Well, not nothing—we listened. We used the Five Secrets of Effective Communication: Disarming Technique: Finding truth in what Hiral said Thought Empathy: Paraphrasing her thoughts Feeling Empathy: Acknowledging her emotions Inquiry: Asking gentle questions to help her open up Stroking: Conveying warmth and respect But here's the key: we gave her nothing. No advice. No cheerleading. No problem-solving. We call this the Zero Technique—giving the patient nothing is actually giving them everything, because what they want most is to feel understood. The Empathy Pitfall: DO NOT PREACH Early in empathy, it's tempting to: Problem-solve Rescue Educate Advise Cheerlead Help Resist. Your job is to go with your patient to the gates of hell and just be with them there. Checking Our Empathy After about 30 minutes, we asked Hiral to grade us on three dimensions (A, B, C, D, or F): Thought Empathy: How well did we understand her negative thoughts? Feeling Empathy: How well did we acknowledge her emotions? Warmth & Acceptance: Did she feel cared about and accepted? She gave us two A's and hesitated on the third. Why? She didn't feel we could truly understand her cultural context—the joint family system, the rigid in-laws, the isolation from her friends and parents. She felt alone even with us. This was gold. Instead of getting defensive, we leaned in. David shared his own experience living near in-laws with vastly different values. I shared my own struggles with perfectionism and parenting anxiety. Hiral started to cry—not from sadness, but from finally feeling seen. TEAM-CBT Pearl: When you get a failing grade on empathy, celebrate. It's your chance to deepen the connection. Process the failure with your patient, and watch the breakthrough happen.

Home Forward, the housing authority for Portland and Multnomah County, is the largest provider of affordable housing in the state. Reporting from Willamette Week has found that the agency has an unusually high vacancy rate and takes, on average, half a year to fill vacant units at some of its properties. The lack of rental revenue from empty units is making it difficult for the agency to pay off its debts. Sophie Peel is a reporter for Willamette Week covering Portland City Hall and neighborhoods.
