When Rachel Nardelli (Nerd-elli to friends and enemies) finds out that her childhood friend turned rival Alison Petrucci is found dead in Pleasant Pond, (the same place the two girls first said goodbye to each other back in eighth grade), the town of Waterbury is outraged by the fear of losing one of their own—the heir to Maine's largest construction company. But it's a little more complicated for Rachel. She saw Alison the night she died. Callous, she said something she shouldn't have. She stirred up the past. The next morning, Alison was gone.Rachel and Alison's diverging paths caused deep and irreparable rift in their relationship. Alison, by then the most bullied girl in school, left for private high school. Four years later, they both end up at Denman College, an elite liberal arts college in Maine, with plenty of scars and far more in common than either one of them would like to admit.Rachel, as News Editor of the school paper, is forced to examine not only what happened to Alison at the pond, but also what happened there eight years prior. Plagued by the complicated memories around their relationship, Rachel joins her journalism crew to investigate the murder. But as she revisits their fraught relationship, she falls into a web of cruelties that threaten to undo everything she understood about her past.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

A brief tale of the dismal success of a scientist's experiment. Anton's Last Dream by Edwin Baird. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.Another podcast, another debut—this time for author Edwin Baird. Best known as the first editor of Weird Tales magazine, Baird helped launch the iconic American fantasy and horror pulp, whose first issue was dated March 1923 and hit newsstands on February 18 of that year. However, Weird Tales got off to a rocky start. Plagued by financial difficulties, the magazine struggled, and Baird was dismissed after just one year at the helm. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1886, Baird published four short stories during his lifetime—three before Weird Tales and one in the very magazine that let him go.Yet perhaps his most enduring legacy lies in his editorial decisions. As the magazine's founding editor, Baird was among the first to publish the work of a now-legendary author: H.P. Lovecraft. And if you've heard our earlier episodes, you'll recall that Lovecraft was a tireless letter writer. Thankfully many of his letters were preserved, including this one to Baird.Shortly after the first issue of Weird Tales was published Lovecraft let himself be persuaded to send Edwin Baird five manuscripts. This is a portion of the letter Lovecraft sent, “My Dear Sir: Having a habit of writing weird, macabre, and fantastic stories for my own amusement, I have lately been simultaneously hounded by nearly a dozen well-meaning friends into deciding to submit a few of these Gothic horrors to your newly-founded periodical. The decision is herewith carried out. Enclosed are five tales written between 1917 and 1923.I have no idea that these things will be found suitable, for I pay no attention to the demands of commercial writing. My object is such pleasure as I can obtain from the creation of certain bizarre pictures, situations, or atmospheric effects; and the only reader I hold in mind is myself. My models are invariably the older writers, especially Poe, who has been my favorite literary figure since early childhood. Should any miracle impel you to consider the publication of my tales, I have but one condition to offer; and that is that no excisions be made. If the tale can not be printed as written, down to the very last semicolon and comma, it must gracefully accept rejection.”So there you have it, a little piece of science fiction history thanks to Weird Tales editor Edwin Baird.Published in Weird Tales Magazine in May 1937 on page 607, Anton's Last Dream by Edwin Baird…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, A Certain Young Man Finds Dying a Profitable Business. Captain America: Brave New World carries on the distressing trend of underachieving and subpar MCU movies. Worse, like much of Phase 4 and 5, there still seems to be no clear direction for what is coming next or why. Brave New World is not a terrible film, but it is one that is clearly stitched together. Plagued by behind-the-scenes drama and frequent reshoots, the whole is clearly made from disparate parts. Thus, despite game efforts from Anthony Mackie as the titular Captain and Harrison Ford, replacing William Hurt, as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, it can never overcome its issues. That said, there is fun to be had. The height of which never should have been spoiled in the film's trailers. Plagued from a young age by disturbing intrusive thoughts and unable to control dangerous compulsive behaviours, 3 Body Problem screenwriter and best-selling author Rose Cartwright was immensely relieved to learn that she had a disease called OCD, which was caused by a chemical imbalance in her brain and could be easily treated with a pill. She became the UK's poster girl for recovery from OCD, and even wrote a book called Pure—later adapted into a TV show—about the success of the psychiatric model in treating her disorder. What she wasn't telling people was that none of it was really true. Years later, medication hadn't produced any kind of long term relief, and she was sinking back into chronic suicidality. Then she discovered something astounding: that there is no biological basis for most of the disorders in the DSM, and the ‘chemical imbalance' theory of mental illness had been quietly discredited years ago. She embarked on a quest to understand what was going on, resulting in her groundbreaking book The Maps We Carry: Psychedelics, Trauma, and Our New Path to Mental Health. In Episode 80, we talk to Rose about her story and her research, getting into the failures of the medical system to treat mental illness effectively, the amazing properties of psychedelics in this field, and the question of how to give working class people access to these new, important tools.Show NotesRose Cartwright's websiteRose's InstagramHer book The Maps We CarryHer BBC radio series on psychedelics and traumaStudy about dance and depressionGabor Mate's book The Myth of NormalEcstatic danceLinksInstagramMerchfuckingcancelled.comclementinemorrigan.comjaylesoleil.comTheme songFucking Cancelled has no ads and is a supported by our listeners. Cannabis is legal for recreational use in nearly half of all U.S. states. And, it's an increasingly common substitute for beer or wine. Numerous scientific studies back up the assertion that cannabis is less harmful than alcohol in terms of physical harm, dependence, and social harm. But as a new series by NPR's Brian Mann and Sydney Lupkin point out, safety is relative and highly dependent on where your weed is sourced. A trusted dispensary may be your best protection against contaminants.
This week we're talking about a movie so awful it made Mike question the whole format of the show. Do we really want to cover every franchise if it means films likeThe Exorcist II: The Hereticare forced on our eyeballs? Widely regarded as one of the worst films of all time, it had the unenviable task of following up one of the most successful horror films in history. Directed by a filmmaker that had nothing but loathing for the first film, and viewed by Warner Brothers as a way to cash in quickly and cheaply on the name and box office of the original, this one seemed doomed from the start. Plagued by near death illnesses, a script rewritten to the point it was unrecognizable, cast and creators that couldn't distant themselves from it fast enough, 70s mambo jumbo psychobabble and not enough Ned Beatty, this one is a trainwreck from start to finish. While Devaughn (rightly) argues for its aesthetics and ethereal sci-fi vibe, this one is a tough watch. That said, sometimes the biggest disasters are the most fun to discuss. Within this episode:What will happen to your liver if you made a drinking game out of how many times they say "Pazuzzu"?Maybe we shouldn't leave Richard Burton around young kids? What was that hot nonsense with the headbands? What if William Peter Blatty sold the toy and action figure rights to The Exorcist? All this and more!

Theme From Sunday's Sermon: Praying for Protection On this edition of One Single Story, Pastors Stephen Mizell, Sheryl Daughety, and Wendy Korbusieski discuss the following questions: I have always assumed that the plagues that came upon the Egyptians did not come upon the Israelites who were enslaved in Egypt at that time. But the Bible does not explicitly state that the Israelites did not experience the effects of each of the plagues, does it? What can we get out of this text today? Sometimes when I read the Bible, it doesn't seem like it directly relates to me and my life. Can you think of some examples of how people's lives are plagued because of sin? How does trusting in God preserve us from these kind of plagues? Trusting God doesn't necessarily mean that we will never experience any consequences of sin or our poor choices. What is the real difference between the life of a person who is in a relationship with God and is experiencing sin's consequences and the life of a person who is not in relationship with God? The reading for the day is: Exodus 8:1–9:35 Matthew 19:13-30 Psalm 24:1-10 Proverbs 6:1-5
Google's $105 million purchase of the Thompson Center in 2022 marked a turning point for Chicago's struggling financial district. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

Editor - Louise Ford, ACE NOSFERATU editor Louise Ford, ACE and writer/director Robert Eggers have reunited once again to take on the not-so-simple task of remaking FW Murnau's horror classic. Considering "Lou's" disdain for cover songs, it was important that this film could stand on its own merits and add something new to the world of cinema. And although she has a few supernatural/horror films to her credit, "Lou" insists she doesn't seek them out. She's just looking for great stories to tell. With NOSFERATU, she told one. NOSFERATU - In the 1830s, estate agent Thomas Hutter travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok, a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter's new bride, Ellen, is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich and Anna Harding. Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that's far beyond her control. Louise Ford, ACE NOSFERATU is the fourth feature film Lou has edited for Robert Eggers since their first collaboration in 2008 on his short film, The Tell-Tale Heart . She edited Eggers' The Witch , The Lighthouse , and The Northman . Other films she has edited include Don't Breathe , Wildlife , and three films with the director Cory Finley - Thoroughbreds , Bad Education , and Landscape with Invisible Hand .
