For over a decade now Mike Mulligan has been co-hosting a popular sports talk morning show on WSCR 670 The Score, first with fellow writer Brian Hanley and then another fellow scribe, David Haugh. The shows overcame the ratings lead of Mike and Mike, then the highly successful show on ESPN pitting Mike Greenberg with Mike Golic. But “Mully,” as he's best known, had been doing radio since the late 80s while also covering the Bulls and their first three-peat, then the Bears. He laughed when it was noted the coaches he covered were the studious Phil Jackson and the enthusiastic and gifted story teller, Dave Wannstedt. But balancing both writing and doing morning radio became too much so he gave up the writing job.Mulligan is up every weekday morning at 3. “It's just a discipline. You just have to make sure you're monitoring everything that happens but you're also making sure getting five, six hours of sleep.”The Bears are the number one team in Chicago and recently went through a stunning day that included the mysterious resignation of defensive coordinator Alan Williams and quarterback Justin Fields blaming part of his difficulties on coaching. It was fuel for fire for Mully and Haugh and everyone else in town. But Mully is also and avowed White Sox fan who has seen the team have arguably its worst season ever both on and off the field. But, as Mully has said often, “I'm living the dream.” Not bad for a native Chicagoan who gets to talk about the exploits of the city's teams on a daily basis."Tell me a story I don't know" is partnered with Last Word on Sports Media Podcast and sponsored by Mr. Duct. There are some very talented, popular and controversial sports talk show hosts scattered across the country.Dan Bernstein is one of them and for the last 28 has entertained, infuriated, challenged, ridiculed but maintained a very sizable and loyal audience. You don't exactly do that by accident. Then again, Bernstein was a different breed. A brainy yet brash grad from Duke university, ‘Bernsy,' as he's best known, can talk about anything from sports to fishing, TV and eating! One his favorite subjects is food.  “I started enjoying food before it became its own industry.” Bernstein is an unabashed foodie but there are limits. “Restaurants are too expensive!” That doesn't stop him from discussing it on the air and particularly one of his favorite places, The Waffle House. He's mellowed over the years from a guy who blistered certain callers to one who simply has matured over time. But he still offers impressions of other famous sports figures and he's pretty darn good at it. On March 13, 1960, the city of Chicago lost its original NFL team, the now Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals were birthed on Chicago's southside and played most of their seasons at Comiskey Park; however, despite their being the city's original NFL team, they were not its flagship franchise, with that distinction going to their northside rivals, the Bears, who played their games at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. In this episode, Greg and noted Cardinal history researcher and author, Joe Ziemba, talk about the events and factors that led up to the team eventually moving to St. Louis. They also, for the first part, talk about Greg's life as a gridiron fan in the Land of the Rising Sun, after which they take a deep dive into the Cardinals Chicago history. Joe is the award-winning author of the books "When Football Was Football: The Chicago Cardinals and the Birth of the NFL," "Cadets, Cannons and Legends: The Football History of Morgan Park Military Academy," and "Bears vs. Cardinals: The NFL's Oldest Rivalry."Joe is a life-long resident of the south side of Chicago, Joe first became interested in the history of football after discovering that his father was a draft choice for the Chicago Cardinals of the National Football League in the 1940s. He is now recognized nationally for his knowledge of the early days of the game and has been a resource for articles, photos, or reports in Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Arizona Republic, ESPN, the Daily Southtown, NBC Sunday Night Football, CBS Football, and many others. Joe has appeared on the WGN documentary “Football in Chicago,” a Comcast Sports special on the Chicago Bears, as well as on radio stations such as WBBM and WSCR in Chicago. He has spoken on the history of football throughout the country at schools, libraries, service clubs, and conferences, and shares the humor and challenges that football pioneers faced in the early days of the game. Joe is an instructor at the Football Learning Academy, and also the host of the podcast "When Football Was Football" on the Sports History Network which explores forgotten topics in the long history of football in the Chicago area. He started his career as a producer for the “Monsters of the Midday”, one of the original shows on a Chicago all sports radio startup in 1992. But Jesse Rogers climbed the ladder from WSCR the Score to eventually becoming a premier baseball writer and on-air reporter for ESPN where he's currently covering the playoffs. For a guy who originally wanting to be an umpire, Rogers has to judge what to write and how to fit his stories into a TV package. A native of suburban Chicago, Rogers latched on to ESPN when it was seeking someone to cover the Blackhawks who, at the time, were just rising to prominence and would eventually win three Stanley cups in 6 seasons. But during that run, Rogers was switched to the Cubs who ironically were also on their rise and would win the World Series in 2016. But in 2021 his career took a different path as a result of the shocking death of Pedro Gomez, then ESPN's leading baseball reporter. Rogers would eventually inherit the position. Iowa AD makes a controversial statement on the future of the transfer portal. Scott Dochterman of the Athletic joins the show to discuss in the 2nd hour. Chris Emma of 670 The Score, WSCR in Chicago also hops on the program in hour #2.

Who would have thought a high school dropout would be the Linch-pin to sports radio in Chicago? Mike North came out of obscurity to become its biggest star, part of the city's first all sports station (WSCR, THE SCORE) on January 2nd, 1992. Paired with former Bears star and Harvard Grad Dan Jiggetts, the duo known as the monsters of the midday, captured an audience hungry for sports talk but it was North, with his bombastic style, who sparked an audience that would soon grow and grow.North skewered some guests while quickly becoming the man of the people and befriending such notable as Walter Payton and Mike Ditka. He would eventually sign the biggest contract in sports talk history, a five year deal worth 7.5 million! In part one of this fascinating interview, North recalls how he cajoled the owner of a radio signal to make it sports talk instead of Jazz and country. North also remembers how he rose from a city employee picking up paper and then the owner of a hotdog stand with his wife Bebe to become one of the most celebrated personalities in the city.Tell me a story I don't know is proudly sponsored by Vienna Beef, makers of Chicago's hot dog and an institution since 1893 (viennabeef.com).
