Storytelling in song is not new. It's mankind's way of conveying, in both accuracy and reflection, the narrative from one perspective. Embellishments and hooks have long been the best way to make the story easy to digest and, if need be, to get a point (likely sociopolitical) across. We'll be doing just that in this Friday's episode: stories based in war, natural disasters, national tragedies and personal conflict. We'll take a hundred year tour of storytelling from Bessie Smith to the Drive-by Truckers, from Memphis Minnie and The Tex-I-An Boys to Calexico, The Staple Singers and Marty Robbins. There are floods, murders, environmental catastrophes, bombings, and some wartime solemnity to be shared today. How to find pleasure in being in a body, creating a dialogue between your emotional and physical body. These two human systems are critical to our well-being and experiences in life, yet we tend to evaluate and feel them separately, which can create dis-ease. Finding pleasure in the body can be key to fully embracing your incarnation in this lifetime. Debra is joined by Liz Letchford who, by way of the evolution of her work, has embodied a mission to bridge these two worlds. As Liz says, “We came from the stars,” and she has actually learned components of Astrology by relating the signs to the systems of the body. Liz speaks to marrying the two oppositional worlds of science, through her sports medicine and PhD in biomechanics, and the mystical world within her somatic and intuitive work, which she shares about within this episode. Sitting in the middle between opposing energies and showing how one can support the other is one of Liz's great abilities, as evidenced by her Mercury in Pisces. If not for you I'm not sure where this thing would have gone. I had never heard of TJ Rives until he appeared on my cell phone offering his help in guiding 143 podcasts over three years. Well done younger man. There's no sense of melancholy here though I wish I had more guests to interview. Some declined, others never bothered to respond but the nearly 100 I corralled managed to turn this project into a rousing success. And they weren't just from the broadcast industry. There was an umpire, hockey franchise owner, PA announcer, national anthem singer and baseball executive, among others. There were absolute legends such as Brent Musburger and Bob Costas and women who have had a dramatic impact on our industry.Through it all I had a blast. Each podcast involved around 8 hours of work, more than half of it editing while scouring for sound bites that fit the conversation. And there three others who were very involved in this podcast. Thank you Will Hatczel, Tatiana Shinkan and Nick Tocci. But most importantly you, the listener, some of you who took the time to comment on social media. I really appreciated that. And I wrote a book on the podcast, “Tell me a story I don't know: Conversations with Chicago sports legends” which is available on Amazon Books. Thank you Triumph Books for taking a chance on a very unique project.Who knows what's next but I can tell you this for certain: I'm not done yet!"Tell me a story I don't know" has been part of the "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast" which can be followed/subscribed on Apple, Spreaker, Spotify, Google, etc.

I had to consider who would interview me for the final episodes of “Tell me a story I don't know.” I didn't consider it for long. TJ Rives (@bucsidelineguy on Twitter) was a no brainer.TJ has been a vital part of this podcast for over three years. He's heard every podcast so he knew the drill: get me to tell stories you've never heard before. I did from childhood to free-lancing to podcasting to writing a book! It's been quite a ride and chronicled perfectly by TJ. I fished out sound bites from decades ago and most notably, my call of Pete Rose tying Ty Cobb for the all time hit record in 1985. What's fascinating about all this is being on the other end of the podcast in which I've interviewed nearly 100 personalities. There are many more events and sound bites in part one so I hope you listen.“Tell me a story I don't know” is sponsored by Mr.Duct (mrductcleaning.com) and my new book, Tell me a story I don't know: Conversations with Chicago sports legends is available on Amazon books and Chicago area book stores."Tell me a story I don't know" is part of the "Last Word on Sports Media" podcat feed and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple, Spreaker, Spotify, Google, etc.!!

The best of nearly 100 interviews in “Tell me a story I don't know” is really a personal choice. I've featured so many guests in best of 9 seasons but in this finale I thought it might be worthy to have you listen to some thought provoking, funny and poignant moments. And not the least of them came from two people who left us. Dave Wills, the ever popular voice of the Tampa Rays and a Chicago native died last March of a heart ailment. He was only 58.Alan Schwartz was 91 but full of vim and vigor. He was once president of the United States Tennis Association and builder of Mid Town tennis in 1970 and for nearly 50 years, the largest indoor facility in the U.S. Schwartz died in December of 2022, just three days after we had our semi annual lunch. I was crushed when I learned of both of their passings. The best of also includes an almost hard to believe story from Los Angeles Dodgers play by play voice Charlie Steiner how history repeated itself. Cheryl Ray Stout, long time reporter and trailblazer here in Chicago recounted how she broke the story of Michael Jordan leaving basketball for baseball and then, returning to the Bulls!Cubs radio voice Ron Coomer remembered as a child how he refused to trade baseball gloves with a future hall of famer and how could I not include Brent Musburger, my inspiration back when I was a 14 year old entertaining thoughts of getting into the business. After spending a half century plying my trade, I thanked him publicly. It was all worth it.“Tell me a story I don't know" is sponsored by Mr. Duct and “Tell me a story I don't know: conversations with Chicago sports legends” is now available on Amazon Books and at chicago area book stores. It's been a great run of "Tell me story I don't know" with a special two part podcast coming up! Make sure not to miss any of the content on the Last Word on Sports Media podcast feed on Apple, Spreaker, Spotify, Google, etc.!
The best of “Tell me a story I don't know” is a conglomeration of ten stories the author of this podcast enjoyed for various reasons. It includes a clip with his inspiration, one with a local reporter, who broke TWO Michael Jordan stories, along with a writer who conveyed a humorous one about the GOAT and a golf game. There are also parts of conversations with two wonderful people, who left us earlier. While there were nearly 100 guests during the last 3 years of "Tell me a story I don't know," this "best of" manages to encapsulate a wide range of people and stories. We hope you enjoy it.The episode is out Tuesday!"Tell me a story I don't know" is part of the Lat Word on Sports podcast feed and make sure to follow/subscribe of more great content on Apple, Spreaker, Spotify, Google, etc.!
We all have inspirations. Mine is Brent Musburger, one of this country's most celebrated and successful sportscasters. As a 14 year old growing up in Chicago I was mesmerized watching him on local TV. I wanted to be him. Turns out I have fashioned a career spanning a half century. Musburger loves the fact that young people he's come across feel the same about him as I do. Now 84 and host of “Countdown to Kickoff” on VSiN, Musburger shares more memorable stories in part two of this terrific podcast. For example, Musburger admits he only wanted to be a sports writer, which he was for the Chicago American. But he wound up being part of WBBM Newsradio's inaugural year of 1968 He also joined the CBS TV affiliate here and the rest is history.Musburger also discusses the tremendous success of the NFL Today, his stunning departure from CBS and subsequent hiring by ABC and ESPN. And then there's just how “You are looking live” began.Of all the interviews I've done, this is the most cherished of them all.“Tell me a story I don't know” is sponsored by Mr. Duct. Imagine the countless stories Brent Musburger can tell. In an absolutely enthralling two part episode this iconic sportscaster recall several and in part one, the back stories behind the famous Doug Flutie “Hail Mary pass, the historic game six of the 1976 NBA finals and the marathon MLB playoff game between the Mets and Astros. But Musburger also delves into his relationship with the late Bob Knight. The relationship started out on the wrong foot when Musburger broke the story Isiah Thomas would leave Indiana for the NBA. It induced the volatile coach to an expletive laced tirade against Musburger. The story of course, was true and later the two would work together in ESPN.There's more. How about the famous “Hail Mary” game when Doug Flutie heaved a final second touchdown pass that allowed Boston College to beat Miami in 1985. “All I could see is someone from Boston College caught the ball, secured it and it was a touchdown," Musburger says. The play and his call is one of the most iconic in college football history, even nearly 40 years later. Now 84 and host of a Sunday show on VSiN called “Countdown to Kickoff,” Musburger remains a prominent presence in the media industry. And this is just part one!“Tell me a story I don't know is sponsored by Mr.Duct (mrductcleaningcom). Chris Collins was on the hot seat. If his team didn't vastly improve from the year before, he could be out as head basketball coach at Northwestern. Instead, he guided them to their second trip to the NCAA Tournament and was named coach of the year! But Northwestern isn't Duke where Jon Scheyer is the head coach. Scheyer broke Collins' scoring record at Glenbrook North High School in suburban Chicago. Then Collins helped coach him at Duke where he was Mike Krzyzewski's associate. They would win a national title in 2010.Collins has a challenge this season with six new players but he has four returning from the squad that made the Big Dance last March. One is Boo Buie who averaged 17 points a game. Collins says this team has to be hungry to pursue accomplishments with this team.In part two of this podcast, Collins also remembers how he was a ball boy for the Chicago Bulls when his father, Doug was coaching them. Collins also enjoys the fact he is the 8th person who attended Northwestern to appear on this podcast.Tell me a story I don't know is sponsored by Mr.Duct. ( mrductcleaning.com). After finally getting Northwestern into its first NCAA Basketball Tournament, Chris Collins ran into problems. The Wildcats couldn't produce winning seasons. His job security was tenuous, at best. But last March, Collins' team not only made the big dance, he was named coach of the year! Collins admits the pressure has been on him since childhood.
