Anatomy of a Murder is a courtroom drama that introduces some of the touchstones of the genre, including the the “I'm just a simple country lawyer” trope, with Jimmy Stewart as said lawyer. With a Duke Ellington score and a surprisingly nuanced approach to imperfect victims, a new decade is definitely on the horizon with this flick.
Generic title aside, THE POSSESSION has a solid cast, spooky atmosphere and is based on a (probably not) true story (that was made up). Is this a lost horror gem, or yet another dimly lit jump-scare buffet? Elsewhere, Robin wants you to watch ANATOMY OF A MURDER, Sean gives an endorsement to IN A VIOLENT NATURE and Kahmeela is mixed on MASTER GARDENER — and FURIOSA is broken down in some detail.
Otto Preminger's ripped-from-the-headlines courtroom drama Anatomy of a Murder (1959) stars a delightful mix of young and old Hollywood, is a big middle finger to the Production Code, and is an ode to manipulating the US legal system. And if that weren't enough, we've got a soundtrack by Duke Ellington and titles by Saul Bass.

Indebted to Otto Preminger's ANATOMY OF A MURDER as well as many prestige dramas from the 1980s and 1990s, Justine Triet's ANATOMY OF A FALL is one of the best reviewed movies of 2023 and a nominee for Best Picture and Best Director at this year's Oscars. The Brothers dig into the film and its deliberately ambiguous storytelling in a roundtable discussion. From the striking Saul Bass artwork to Duke Ellington's score, one should expect that Anatomy of a Murder wouldn't be like the films that came before it. This film, which features a star-filled cast, bucks the studio system and films on location in Michigan, uses actors not contracted by the studio, and doesn't hold back with language and themes typically avoided thanks to the Hays Code. Dan and Jon not only sing its praises, but offer some ideas on how it could be brought back today.Next episode: Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999) • MinnesotaSee what native tribes reside or resided in what is now known as MichiganSubscribe to The WALT!Contact us, follow us on social media, or buy some merch at linktr.ee/RuinedChildhoods Hosted on Acast. Inspired by real events, Robert Traver's 1958 novel was the first of its kind - a true "courtroom thriller". Showcasing the genial narrative perspective of every-man defense attorney, Paul Biegler, "Anatomy" couldn't be better named as it guides readers through the crooks and crevices of the legal corpus of a murder trial. Groundbreaking and controversial in equal measure for its detailing and confrontation of sexual assault, Traver's story was immediately adapted for the screen by Hollywood legend Otto Preminger, where it gathered further acclaim and social traction. As fiction, "Anatomy" holds up well and, propelled by its warmth and wisdom, offered us a mill's worth of grist for conversational grind.

One judge may be quite like another ... but this courtroom drama stands apart!Anatomy of a Murder is a 1959 courtroom drama from director Otto Preminger, starring Jimmy Stewart, Lee Remick, Eve Arden, Ben Gazzara, and Army-McCarthy hearings legal icon Joseph Welch, with a jazzy score from Duke Ellington. It's based on a real-life case that defense attorney-turned-Michigan Supreme Court Justice John D. Voelker wrote under the pen name Robert Traver.Stewart plays a humble country lawyer trying to do the best he can to get his client acquitted in a murder case. And what a murder case it is! There's no question about what happened — a military man gunned down a local bar-owner. What needs further dissecting is the motive. As it turns out, the bar-owner was accused of raping the military man's wife.Like so many overwhelmed jurors, Áine and Kevin deliberate over the film's pure Michigan setting, delightful cameos, and un-cliched, unflinching look at the justice system, as well as some light topics like misogyny, rape, and alcoholism.Follow us on the usual social media suspects:FacebookTwitterInstagramAnd send us mysterious and intriguing missives at mysterytomepodcast@gmail.com.
"If we ever turn these into a book," Mike remarks in this episode, "it'll be called Trial by Viewer." That's one of the subjects the guys discuss when they look at Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder (1959), one of the greatest courtroom-dramas of all time because it breaks some fundamental rules about the genre--and, in doing so, puts the viewer in the same uncomfortable place as the jury. So suspend judgment for now, pause that Duke Ellington CD, and settle in for a conversation about Jimmy Stewart and George C. Scott as two lawyers trying the case of the unlikable Ben Gazzara. These are well produced, fancy pants editions of important and interesting films for the discerning film lover. We continue our journey through Jim's collection of movies with... Anatomy Of A Murder Spine Number: 600 Director: Otto Preminger Genre: Drama Courtrooms are inherently dramatic. There are stakes, someone will win, someone will lose... you don't have to add anything to the environment to make it dramatic. Sometimes movies will dress thigns up and try to force some sort of spectacle onto the story, but you really don't need it. This point is driven home masterfully in Otto Preminger's "Anatomy of A Murder." A young Army officer admits to killing a man. There are witnesses. Open and shut, right? Well... Not really. Brilliantly acted, expertly directed, and beautifuly written, Anatomy of A Murder is one of the finest examples of courtroom drama ever filmed. But there is more.
