Could you imagine operating a company without a website anymore? Yeah, neither could we. But between web hosting, web building, and cybersecurity, it's often an overly complex situation to create a well-designed yet functional website that meets your company's needs. In today's episode, Ricardo is joined by Michael Fredrick, owner of point2point of New Orleans, to learn the ins and outs of crafting a website that works for you. Michael saves websites from drowning (literally). After rescuing web hosting hardware during a flood, Michael now runs and operates his web hosting office in New Orleans. His team builds WordPress websites for clients, allowing them to make simple edits themselves, and giving Michael the freedom to create a unique and dynamic website.  Web hosting, a previously mystic art that required expertise and success, is now an easy field to find a company that can offer the services you need. Many companies fail because they don't have a good website. to drive traffic and build marketing around. Point2point can help websites with high-volume traffic maintain top-notch loading speeds and services.  Places like insurance companies and high-traffic restaurant supply companies are dependent on their website, and a crash could prove disastrous.  Why is loading speed critical? Because if someone tries to go to your website and it's slow, they're just going to find somewhere else. If all you have is a cat blog, it probably won't generate high traffic volume. (And it's probably not necessary to invest in a website company.) Hosting sites can offer different services, making it an essential investment for your business.  It all comes down to how fast they can make changes, how cheaply they can make changes, and what changes they're able to make. Some people operate their websites like a storage unit - they provide the space but offer no services. Michael flipped that and aims to provide a full-service offering that both hosts and designs websites. How to use integrations when building a website:  With WordPress, Michael likes using it because you can easily drag and drop images, add press releases, and any other changes you might need. Michael also uses Hubspot to assist with integrating things like QuickBooks because integrating financial and eCommerce platforms with your website simplifies your workload. How has Michael stayed in business so long? He gets his clients from awareness. His websites aren't the cheapest, but they aren't the most expensive. He gets clients from the positive word-of-mouth he gains from other people. It's all about making great personal connections. Google has a test that can tell you how it's performing. Google My Business is free and is a great way to help register higher on Google, drastically moving you up in the search rankings.  Michael's final takeaway? Make sure your website has an SSO certificate. If you don't have that, ask your hosting platform if they offer it.  Book and Podcast Recommendations: The Traction Book by Gino Whitman Getting Things Done by David Allen The Reply All Podcast His own podcast, point2people To get in touch with Michael, visit his company website or connect on LinkedIn. And for listeners of the podcast, Michael is offering three months of website hosting ( a $150 value) for free! A major update coming to WordPress 5.8. Beta release 2 is available for testing now. This release expands WordPress' site building capabilities, along with improvements to features users have enjoyed since the launch of the block editor. The release will also include WebP support which 95% of the web browers worldwide use. Check out the WordCamp Europe 2021 Gutenberg demo narrated by Beatriz Fialho. WordPress Taverns’ Sarah Gooding recaps a discussion with Matt Mullenweg and Matias Ventura “The Block Editor Gets Ready to Become a Site Builder” A quote from Matt: For me, 2020 was the year that really felt like people started to see the vision of Gutenberg from four or five years ago, when it was very abstract and they saw it as kind of like the old WYSIWYG editor with some extra lines on it or something,” Mullenweg said. “The first 17 or 18 years of WordPress democratized people putting text into a box. Now we're democratizing design, allowing people to control the boxes.” This has been another huge project for the WordPress contributors and developers. Josepha Hayden Chomphosy is very transparent on the WP Briefing podcast about how difficult it is to run a large open source project and offers suggestions on how to get a big group of people to come to consensus. Eric Karkovick Editor, Writer & WordPress Expert at Speckyboy covers what WordPress acquisitions says about the future and states that the WordPress ecosystem is maturing and consolidating. “Frankly, it's becoming a lot harder for solo entrepreneurs or small development shops to manage a popular plugin. Supporting a large userbase while also focusing on the future could become overwhelming. Thus, it's not surprising to see that some of these products are being sold off to larger firms. We saw something similar happen with internet providers back in the early 2000s. The more mature the market, the harder it became for a small company to carry out its mission. Pretty soon, they were just about all bought up by corporate interests”. Alex Denning along with Iain Poulson tweeted last week that they have created FlipWP and For $300/year the duo will help connect WordPress product companies for sale, with would-be buyers. If all this talk about acquisitions every day has your brain tangled up, Chris Lema posted a straight forward Twitter thread to bring some clarity to this fast-paced space. There are a lot of discussions about companies (and hosts) acquiring folks in the #WordPress space. Now, new marketplaces are getting created to help you sell your company. All of this is great. But not all buyers are the same, and it's not always about the $$$.

Today I'm talking to fearless freelancer and WordPress expert Carrie Dils all about how she transitioned from 1:1 client work to monetizing her knowledge on a bigger scale. If you want to move beyond time-for-money in your side hustle, this is the episode for you! Carrie has been around in the WordPress and web design community for many years – I’d even seen her name around well before I decided to start freelancing – I’d be working on a website at my day job and run into a snag, start googling and her blog would come up quite often. Her name is Carrie Dils, and I came across her again when I booked a new web design client with a pretty challenging project. I was researching how to do something, came across Carrie’s website again and saw that she had a way to just book a paid consultation call by the minute – which we’ll talk about later in this episode. So I booked a call, got some advice and then invited Carrie on the podcast to talk about how she monetized her WordPress knowledge beyond one on one client work. In today’s episode, Carrie and I dig deep into: The tipping point where Carrie took the leap from day job to full time side hustle. Creating multiple streams of revenue outside of 1:1 client work as a web designer. How to do content marketing as a web designer. How to easily sell your expertise – in any subject – by the minute. How Carrie dealt with imposter syndrome when she was first starting out The #1 skill to have as a web designer. Why you shouldn’t try to do everything yourself in your web design business. Why Carrie shifted from writing Genesis and WordPress tutorials for freelancers to teaching them how to be a successful freelancer. Carrie’s #1 piece of advice for a new web designer. Carrie’s advice on pricing. The belief Carrie had to change about herself to get where she is today. Just a quick heads up – you’ll hear some background noise in this interview – Carrie had to duck into a coffee shop to do the interview, which is totally cool with me! So let’s dive in to my interview with WordPress Expert and Fearless Freelancer Carrie Dils. So if you’re a web designer or you’re thinking about freelancing, head on over to peptalksforsidehustlers.com/freelance and that’ll send you over to my blog post all about how I got my first web design client, and you can get your hands on a freebie – my 7 Step Website Consultation Checklist and script that will walk you through how to do a consultation call with a potential client.
