Like many others leaving University, Alex wasn't really sure what career she wanted to do and fell into her first few jobs without having the time to think about it. After a few years of finding her feet she landed in a position of working for a fast growing company where she had the enormous challenge of 'trial by fire' fast learning and rapid expansion. Longing for every weekend, when she could see her boyfriend and get a break, she often wandered why she was so exhausted during their time together, until she realised that she had underlying health issues that she had been pushing down as they weren't a priority Monday to Friday. Yikes! The pandemic was the time Alex needed to take a break and reassess her whole working life and also her health. She just knew she couldn't return to her unhealthy work hours, and so, after talking it over with friends and family, who were extremely supportive, she decided to start her own business. Following what she thought 'she should do' led her again to burning out and giving her time and energy for work that she wasn't passionate about. This was all too familiar and so she set out to find out what she really wanted to do, what was the one thing she could offer support with and feel the ultimate satisfaction without the burn out. Alex now runs a successful consultancy business, coaching and mentoring other business owners to regain a work life balance through effective practices and finally finding the joy and balance in her own life. Bypassing the hesitancy for change: Making a business case for MACH with Peter Burggraaff

The MACH Alliance Podcast

Shaping the tomorrow for an enterprise cannot rely on how they got to today. They need to dare to let go of what they feel comfortable with, says Peter Burggraaff, Partner & Director at Boston Consulting Group.  More and more enterprises are making the move to MACH, but there's still a high level of hesitancy at an executive level surrounding change. So how can you make the business case for MACH? Well, it starts with clearly defining the reason you want to change and then the uses cases.    Peter joined Sonja Keerl, Vice President of the MACH Alliance, to discuss the rethink businesses need surrounding their IT technology and within their organisation, as well as the need for use cases to be driving the change, not just because a business wants MACH. Key highlights: Enterprises must have a technological and organisational rethink. They must have discussions not just around IT but around the people, the organization, the skills needed for the future and how they work can together both internally and in collaboration with business partners. Enterprises must be thinking from a use case driven approach. This then allows businesses to define the technology needed to do that, the building blocks and organisation needed to build and support it.   Being specific in the articulation of digital change is a big weakness, especially at a C-suite or board level. More and more the need for change is clear, the ambition to do something digital is clear, and the need to accelerate is clear. But what businesses aren't clear on is what it is they want to change and how fast they want to go.   Retailers must “not only decompose the architecture but decompose the journey to value creation.” While most retailers typically spend around 1-1.5% of revenue on technology, truly digital retailers spend 5-7%. Yes, businesses may spend more but they will become more efficient, and develop greater opportunities to grow.

Chris Emkey, a former profession tour tennis player from Berks County and now a partner and director of training for Etchfit Athlete Training and Management Systems, tells Zeke the specifics of how Etchfit offers individual evaluations and customized training sessions, along with subsequent management monitoring, for elite athletes on the high school, academy, college and professional levels in a variety of sports. “We decided to take the training we do with elite athletes and package it so others can take advantage of it,” says Emkey. “The biggest thing we do is diagnostics -- we get to know an athlete’s body and tailor a program for him or her. When everybody gets the same type of training, it’s dangerous. One size doesn’t fit all.”

Chris Emkey, a former professional tour tennis player from Berks County, tells Zeke his story as a fitness trainer who now is a partner and director of training for ETCHFIT Athlete Training and Management Systems, which trains elite athletes on the high school, academy, college and professional levels in a variety of sports in locations across the country. “When I played Division I college tennis at Charleston, went on the pro tennis satellite tour, and then my family owned the West Side Tennis Club, I got to be around a lot of really good strength and conditioning coaches,” says Emkey. “I took the opportunity to go into training as I was inspired by other trainers. “I partnered with Pat Etchberry, the iconic strength and conditioning coach in the world, and we take training to different markets to expose the model to other people.” continues Emkey. “We thoroughly evaluate a client and then create a program specifically to them.”
