Coaching Corner: Build Range, Not Job TitlesStill clinging to job titles for validation? In this episode, Tracy Forsyth breaks down why your range is your real power — especially in a world where roles are constantly evolving. What you'll learn:
The ground keeps shifting, but your core doesn't have to. We dive into the art of evolving your identity without feeling lost, using one deceptively simple question to turn uncertainty into clarity. When we anchor to purpose and let the packaging change, we gain freedom to pivot, experiment, and still feel like ourselves. We start by dismantling the end of history illusion, that sneaky belief that who we are today is who we'll be forever. You'll hear how Maya Shankar reframed a lost violin career into cognitive science by following her values, and how Vera Wang translated the drive of elite skating into world-changing fashion. Those stories aren't fairy dust - they're blueprints. If your why is service, creation, truth, or potential, there are many hats that can honor it, even as technology and markets evolve. Walk away with a simple, repeatable practice to keep your core steady while your tools, titles, and tactics evolve with the times. If this sparked something for you, follow the show, share it with a friend or your mastermind, and leave a quick review so more people can navigate change with clarity and courage. January 22, 2026: For years, we've talked about jobs, titles, careers, and skills as if they were stable foundations of work. They're not. In today's episode of Future Ready Today, I break down five stories that reveal a deeper truth most leaders are avoiding: the job itself is starting to fail as the core unit of work. From Meta's pullback on long-horizon roles, to Deloitte scrapping traditional job titles, to the growing skills mismatch in hiring, to lawsuits over opaque AI screening tools, and even to Citi's bottom-up AI experiments — these aren't disconnected headlines. They're signals of the same structural breakdown. AI didn't cause this. It exposed it. This episode is about why organizations keep redesigning org charts, titles, and technology — but refuse to redesign work itself. And why the companies that win next won't be the ones with the best AI tools, but the ones willing to let go of outdated assumptions about jobs, careers, and control. Send us a textIf you feel stuck in your job search even though you are doing all the right things with your resume and LinkedIn, you are not alone. I see this pattern every day with mid-career professionals who are smart, capable, and experienced but still not getting traction in today's market. In this episode, I flip the script on how most people think about career growth and job search at mid-career. Job titles are not destinations. They are outcomes. When you build real career clarity, your value travels with you from one organization to the next, regardless of the title on the door.I walk you through a practical framework I use with my private clients to move them from scattered job searching to selective, strategic career positioning. We talk about how to define the problems you are best positioned to solve, the conditions where you do your best work, how to SHOW UP from service rather than proving, and how to clearly articulate who you help and what you help them do.You will also hear how this kind of clarity changes everything about interviews and recruiter conversations. When you stop trying to prove yourself and start SHOWing UP to contribute, your confidence increases, your message becomes sharper, and decision makers can see exactly where you fit.We also talk about the role of AI in today's job search. AI can help you optimize keywords, but it cannot replace clarity. Clarity is what carries the interview, builds trust, and helps you stand out in a crowded and noisy market. In this conversation, you will learn how to make recruiters' jobs easier by responding quickly, giving clear yes or no answers, and asking what they need next. These small shifts dramatically increase your credibility and momentum. At mid-career, the most powerful question is no longer “Am I enough?” It is “Where am I most useful?” When you answer that, your job search becomes focused, your energy increases, and your value compounds. If you are ready to reduce noise, save time, and target roles where your impact actually matters, this episode will give you the tools and language to do it.If you want help pinpointing where your value belongs next, visit johnneral.com/resources and get the Mid-Career Clarity Code for $43. How they think. How they operate. What their archetype is. In this solo episode, Sam discusses the common pyramid of the 5 Levels of Employee Agency — breaking down each of these levels and how to find Level 5 Simplifiers when you're seeking to make a hire or placement. In this conversation, Sam gives some examples of how Loxo is facing this challenges, emphasizing how, in his personal experience, the most impactful team members are often not defined by their job titles. Instead, their success is attributed to their thinking processes, operational styles, and underlying archetypes that contribute to the team's overall performance. In this episode, I break down how to identify your actual dream job in public health using a simple “mental algorithm” so you're not just scattering applications into the void, but moving with clarity and purpose toward a career that actually excites you. We talk honestly about the brutal November 2025 public health job market and how to think in terms of transferable skills. I walk you through how to network without being awkward or apologetic, including specific outreach emails (that you can use!) using my E.A.S.Y. framework (Establish, Ask, Simplify, Yield). Finally, I rapid-fire a huge list of public health job titles and organizations you can plug into job boards right away and invite listeners to email me for resume and job-hunt questions.
This is your leverage window. Q4 is when companies lock budgets, finalize promotions, set equity, and protect retention risk. Translation: decisions are being made about you—often without you. If you stay quiet, you're already behind. In this episode, Dr. Renee Baker joins me to dismantle the myths and give you a real plan to negotiate raises, titles, and equity without begging or breaking. We tear into the fear narrative—layoffs, headlines, “be grateful and wait your turn.” Gratitude without advocacy is servitude. Silence doesn't pay. You are the CEO of you, and if you don't speak up, you've handed away your leverage. We talk about why it's cheaper to keep you than replace you, how bonuses and timing create retention pressure, and how to use that math in your favor. Then we get tactical. Politics often beats performance, so study the breadcrumbs: who gets promoted, how, and why. Don't bring a task list to a review—bring outcomes. Learn to quantify impact beyond sales, frame results the way your firm rewards them, and ask the right questions in your 1:1s so your leaders carry the right story into the room when you're not there. We close with two heavy hitters: titles and “no.” Titles drive pay bands and access—use them. If they say no, convert it into a timeline, criteria, and checkpoints. If that's not respected, that's your signal. This is not about ego. It's about equity, mobility, and your next seat at the table.Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/sN9-MechYpMConnect with Dr. Renee Baker: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/itsreneebaker/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ItsReneeBaker/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itsreneebaker Threads: https://www.threads.net/@itsreneebaker YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@DrReneeBakerAs always we ask you to comment, DM, whatever it takes to have a conversation to help you take the next step in your journey, reach out on any platform!Twitter, FaceBook, Instagram, Tiktok, LinkedinDISCLOSURE: Awards and rankings by third parties are not indicative of future performance or client investment success. In a podcast focused on inventory management, industry leaders discuss the importance of reversing the typical sequence of operations. They emphasize that transformation projects, particularly for opening stores, should prioritize actions over job titles. A step-by-step approach is recommended for site selection and feasibility, with a strong emphasis on reaching agreement on necessary actions. Clarity on which function is responsible for each step is deemed essential for success.

What will Instructional Designers be called in the future? In this episode, I revisit a fun question from a recent webinar that got me thinking. Our field has gone by many names over the years, from training specialists and curriculum developers to multimedia designers and learning engineers. These shifts often reflect the trends, tools, and technologies of the time, from Gagné's Nine Events to the rise of LMSs and now AI. So, what's next? While job titles may continue to evolve, our core competencies remain steady. Join me for a lighthearted and slightly speculative look at the future of instructional design job titles. It's Friday, so grab your crystal ball and let's have some fun with this episode!

By sharing stories of people who have navigated tough circumstances with dignity and purpose, she illustrates how taking pride in one's work—no matter how small—can lead to personal growth and unexpected opportunities. Heather calls on her audience to embrace their current situations with passion and commitment, suggesting that this approach not only enriches their own lives but also positively impacts those around them. The overall message resonates with anyone who has ever questioned their value based on their job, providing reassurance that every contribution, no matter how humble, is vital to the collective success of society.Takeaways: Self-worth should not be tied to job titles; we are more than our work. Finding pride in any job, no matter how small, enhances self-esteem and opens doors. Every role contributes to the greater purpose of society, regardless of its perceived value. Recognizing the unique contributions of essential workers elevates their importance and our respect. Taking pride in your work can make a significant difference in others' experiences. Your current job may not be your dream role, but it can lead you there. "Highlight transferable skills on your resume instead of just focusing on titles. Sometimes, the right fit comes from skills, not a matching job title." Key Moments 00:37 Importance of Job Titles 01:27 Creative Job Titles in Modern Businesses 04:18 The Challenge of Matching Job Roles 07:41 Acknowledging Scarcity Mindset 12:14 Advocating for your Professional Identity Connect with Tim and his team: Website: https://bestculturesolutions.ca/ LinkedIn: Best Culture Solutions, Inc Instagram: @best.culture.solutions Email: tim@bestculturesolutions.ca The responsibilities that come with the title 'Director' at one company may not be the same responsibilities at another. In fact, the same title can mean vastly different roles depending on the company's size, scope, and structure. This can cause people to overlook potentially good roles based on their preconceived understanding of a title. For job seekers, understanding the true scope of a job post is crucial. There are ways to read between the lines and discern if a role is genuinely a good fit for your experience and aspirations. Some of the ways to navigate the hierarchy of job titles are: Understand Your Scope: Titles like "Director" or "Manager" can mean vastly different things across different organizations. Always dig deeper into the specific responsibilities and scope of work associated with a title, rather than taking it at face value. Experience Over Titles: Don't get too hung up on exact titles when considering candidates or applying for roles. Focus on the skills and experiences that align with the responsibilities of the position. Sometimes a lateral move in title can offer just the challenge an individual might need to grow. Advocate Rightly: If you find yourself in a role that doesn't reflect your responsibilities or the perception you need to project, don't hesitate to have an open conversation with your leaders. Make sure the reasons behind your request are genuine and are in the best interest of both your career growth and the company's branding. Make sure to listen to the entire discussion about how to decode job titles in episode 86. This special Tactical Tuesday episode comes from a recent LIVE Loxo event in London. We gathered 20 of the area's top recruitment movers & shakers for panel conversations, Q&As, and some good old fashioned networking. Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing some of those sessions (fare thee well, FOMO). Today's focuses on two tips for expanding both your reach and your reply rates — from splitting up your job titles in your searches to sending voice memos. Given the fact that this was recorded live at an event, you may notice that the sound quality is not at our standard level — we apologize for that, but certainly think this content is still well worth a listen!

Why resistance isn't always a bad thing.Friction — that's Professor Huggy Rao's metaphor for the forces that hamper workplace efficiency. But as he says, some friction can be helpful — if you know how to use it.In his book, The Friction Project: How Smart Leaders Make the Right Things Easier and the Wrong Things Harder, Rao and coauthor Robert I. Sutton explore how operational obstacles show up in the workplace and, more importantly, what we can do about them. Through what Rao calls “friction fixing,” leaders can “take out the bad friction to make the right things easy to do [and] put in good friction to make the wrong things harder [to do].”As Rao discusses with host Matt Abrahams on this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, leaders can eliminate bad friction through good communication. “Communication matters a lot,” he says. “The simple rule is, make sure a 10-year-old can understand it on the first try.”Episode Reference Links:Huggy Rao: Website Huggy's Books: The Friction Project, Scaling Up Excellence, & Market Rebels Huggy's Successful Communication Recipe - “Ah! Lemme ask ya. Is there anything more confusing than job titles when it comes to job searching and your career planning? I think not. Have you ever wondered… Do job titles matter? Does anyone care? How do I explain my title when no one outside my company knows what system engineer III means? Should I apply for lower-level titles to increase my chances of getting a job? Can I apply to higher level jobs when I'm qualified but my title doesn't indicate that? Uh. Wait. Do I need to explain to future job interviewers that I had more responsibility in this manager role than my previous director role? Coverage and answers to all this in today's podcast… If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1.
