“Mantra” is the latest single to be lifted from the Skinny Lister's upcoming album ‘Shanty Punk' out 20 October, via Xtra Mile Recordings. The track is bright and beatific in its message, set to a tune simply born for a good old fashioned barn dance. Sat amongst typically more driving and stomping tracks of the album, “Mantra” offers a welcome moment of reflection and is intended to bring a slightly different flavour to proceedings. Led by the band's leading lady Lorna Heptinstall, it sees her releasing her inner Dolly Parton across a track dashed with a hint of country and a pinch of Cajun music. Based on the glass half-full mantra that Skinny Lister themselves live-by. The sweet country two-step of “Mantra” follows the full-force folk/punk of previous single, “Company Of The Bar”, with both tracks due to feature on ‘Shanty Punk', Skinny Lister's sixth, and arguably definitive new album. The follow-up to 2021's ‘A Matter of Life & Love', a freewheeling record that paid homage to all the greatest things in life; ‘Shanty Punk' goes one further with a concept record that's simply all about: Skinny Lister. Skinny Lister will be taking ‘Shanty Punk' out to the masses this Winter, with the quintet will be putting it to the test with an extensive run of UK shows throughout November and December. With a reputation for one of the most uplifting and exhilarating shows in the biz
GUISE is the heart and soul of pop-folk singer-songwriter Jess Guise. Possessed of a remarkable folk lilt, she sings with delicacy whilst landing some vicious asides - by turns sweet, funny, and haunting. Whilst locked down with her husband, Frank Turner, Jess won the hearts of his large and welcoming fan base through their weekly livestreams raising funds for live venues, and a buzz rose up around her music in that world. Jess has been building on that buzz honing her live craft on the road, supporting and sharing stages with the likes of Richard Thompson, Frank Turner, Will Varley, The Arkells, Grace Petrie and Sean McGowan. After the success of their first EP The Fun Part in 2020, Guise (Jess along with long-term bandmates and collaborators Laura Hanna, Titas Halder and Keith Barry) released their first studio album Youngest Daughter on Xtra Mile Recordings at the end of April 2022. Reaching number 18 in the official UK Folk Chart and produced by Frank Turner, the album is a beautiful accumulation of GUISE's work so far and the summation of Jess' own personal journey to date. An ode to acknowledging past pain and carrying it with you to build better memories, Jess describes the record as an honest, personal, and self-deprecating wander through the various ways she's tried to follow her heart over the years.

While their tastes in punk rock are a little different, punk is a genre that Adam and Ed both adore. This week, The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly) tackles a weighty question: is karaoke, in a way, kind of punk? The Karaoke Trivia Bullpen focuses on punk music, as does Adam and Ed's conversation on that heady question, as well as their favorite punk songs to do at karaoke, and suggestions for those who want to bring that punk rock energy to their own karaoke performances. Why this genre-heavy topic? Well, during Frank Turner's tour this summer, Ed got introduced to the music of Pet Needs, one of the tour's opening acts, and instantly became a fan of the band's pulse-pounding performance style and witty lyrics. He got to talking with Johnny Marriott, lead singer and musician from the band, and it turns out he has a lot of karaoke experience, ranging from doing it at home with family to wild stag parties and questing for extra drink tokens. They talk about the similarities of punk ideology and karaoke, his new album, Primetime Entertainment, and the fascination with America's yellow school buses. Do Adam and Ed sometimes just use the show for a chance to talk to musicians whose work they like? Yes, but only if they've got some love of and appreciation for karaoke. As always, you can find more info on the website (https://www.sungpoorly.com), and on social media--the show is @sungpoorly on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and now even Tiktok. You can reach Adam and Ed via email by sending a message to sungpoorly@gmail.com. And if you want to support the podcast and snag yourself some great karaoke and podcast swag doing it, our store has all of that and more–www.sungpoorly.com/store. The last few months have been insane for Pet Needs. They signed to Xtra Mile Recordings, Frank Turner mixed and mastered their debut record Fractured Party Music (which comes out 12 March) and now they're facing tour opportunities that they'd never dreamed of. I talk with Johnny Marriott about that whole thing, our mutual love for Laura Jane Grace (Against Me!), Xtra Mile Recordings, getting the band to play Edinburgh Fringe Festival and so much more in this deep dive into Johnny's life, thoughts and hopes and dreams for the band. They will become your new favourite band.

Frank is joined by poet, playwright and translator Sasha Dugdale to discuss the woman behind the song I Believed You, William Blake. Catherine Blake was the wife of the great visionary, painter and poet, who played a crucial role in his life. As well as running the household and keeping him (relatively) sane, she took an active role in his art; assisting with painting, printing and engraving. During his lifetime William Blake enjoyed very little success. It was Catherine who, after his death, began the process of his public rehabilitation and rise to fame. It’s perhaps down to her that we know about him at all. This episode features an extract from Sasha Dugdale's book Joy. Published by Carcanet Press, it received the 2016 Forward Prize for Best Single Poem. You can buy and stream Frank's album No Man's Land here. This episode was produced by Hayley Clarke and the executive producer was Peggy Sutton. Kassiani is one of only two women to have been written about from the Byzantine era, which is a somewhat forgotten about period in history. She is most famously known for quipping at the Emperor Theophilos at a bridal show before going on to become an abbess, poet and hymnographer, whose songs are still sung in Greek Orthodox Churches today. Despite being from a distant time, her character shines through in her work. Her quick-witted humour and somewhat rebellious one liners are what brought her to Frank's attention including the phrase "I hate silence, when it is time to speak". Frank recruits the help of self-professed ‘Byzantinist’ and Professor Liz James from the University of Sussex to tell the story behind the song The Hymn of Kassiani. You can pre-order Frank's album No Man's Land hereThis episode was produced by Hayley Clarke and the executive producer was Peggy Sutton. Frank heads to one of his favourite haunts in Camden Town to meet local historian Carol Clancy and find out more about former landlady Jinny Bingham, also known as the Mother Damnable. Described as a witch by many for her fiery temper and disregard for authority, locals claimed that on the day she died they saw the devil enter her house but never leave. Her coachhouse The Mother Redcap was originally on the site of the World’s End pub with the The Underworld venue underneath, which she is reputed to haunt to this day.You can buy and stream Frank's album No Man's Land here. This episode was produced by Hayley Clarke and the executive producer was Peggy Sutton. This episode is about the woman known as Mata Hari, which in the Malay language means Eye of The Day. Mata rose to fame as an exotic dancer in the early 20th Century and was one of the most connected socialites in Europe. However, during the First World War she was accused of being a spy and executed by firing squad. She's perhaps one of the most well-known women featured on Tales from No Man's Land and is often cited as the archetypal Femme Fatale in art and film, yet very little is known about her actual life. Frank speaks to film historian Pamela Hutchinson about the legacy of Mata Hari, and the woman behind the myth. You can buy and stream Frank's album No Man's Land hereThis episode was produced by Hayley Clarke and the executive producer was Peggy Sutton. Discover the story behind Frank Turner’s song The Graveyard of the Outcast Dead. The so-called "Winchester Geese" are a group of forgotten women who in medieval times worked in the brothels on the bank of the River Thames. At the end of their lives many were buried in a mass grave for the “outcast dead”, which was closed in 1853. Years later, their bones were rediscovered and the site was turned into a memorial garden, now known as Cross Bones. In this episode Frank meets writer and activist John Constable, who has campaigned for many years to maintain Cross Bones as a garden of remembrance. You can buy and stream Frank's album No Man's Land here. This episode was produced by Hayley Clarke and the executive producer was Peggy Sutton. Frank Turner tells the true story of the woman behind his song The Death of Dora Hand. Dora was a vaudeville entertainer, a singing sensation in the bars of the wild west town Dodge City, who was accidentally shot to death by a small-time outlaw in 1878. Frank visits the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City and talks to director Lynn Johnson about Dora’s colourful life and the love triangle that led to her murder. You can buy and stream Frank's album No Man's Land here. This episode was produced by Hayley Clarke and the executive producer was Peggy Sutton. WMSE is excited to be back once again at Club Garibaldi for our monthly Local/Live segments! We’re ready for another great year of local music and on Tuesday, January 8th, we kick the year off with a bang and open the doors to welcome to the stage Milwaukee’s Trapper Schoepp, who has a brand new album to share. Trapper Schoepp’s newest, ‘Primetime Illusion’ – produced by Pat Sansone (Wilco, Robyn Hitchcock) – will see its worldwide release on Xtra Mile Recordings on January 25th. This time around, it sees Schoepp reaching for his own place in the canon with a truly remarkable collection of character-driven songs and stories, a carefully etched series of sonic snapshots in which people we all know struggle to fulfill their own American dream. The album also features a co-write with Bob Dylan called, “On, Wisconsin.” With its extraordinary melding of the personal and political, ‘Primetime Illusion’ firmly places Trapper Schoepp amongst the long American continuum of singing storytellers, a pedigree and place on the family tree that inspires and drives him each and every new day. As always, WMSE Music Director Erin and co-host Cal will lead the our musical guests through questions in between the live performance with the help of our audience (and audience participation is encouraged!). YOU can join WMSE and Trapper Schoepp for a sneak peek of ‘Primetime Illusion’ – doors are at 5:30pm and the segment starts at 6pm, running until 7pm. Club Garibaldi’s is located at 2501 S. Superior Street in Bay View. If you can’t join us in-person, listen live over the airwaves (or in the WMSE archives) at the 6 o’clock hour. This 21+ event is FREE and open to the public. Local/Live on WMSE is sponsored by Club Garibaldi.
