This week I welcome the talented, genuine and generous Tom Bright onto the podcast. Tom is a musician and songwriter, who has gone from strength to strength since his debut album Self-Service Checkout in 2020. Since then he has gone on to feature on the One Show, BBC Radio 2, BBC 5 Live, Radio X, as well performing at iconic venues and festivals such as the London Palladium, Shepherd's Bush Empire and Glastonbury Festival. As well as playing his own headline shows throughout Europe, he has also supported The Libertines, The Leisure Society, Mystery Jets, Tom Grennan and Reverend & The Makers, to name but a few. His music also spent two years featuring on Spotify's 'Most Beautiful Songs in the World' playlist. Before his musical endeavours, Tom was once the UK's youngest pub landlord, and is also a former patient of Great Ormond Street Hospital, undergoing a multitude of major life-saving operations. His third album, ‘Somewhere Anywhere' - produced by Ed Harcourt and mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios - was released in October 2023 and is his most personal and reflective work to date. Tom has been a real inspiration and help to me as well as other young musicians by hosting Bright Nights, an open mic event across London that seeks to showcase new and emerging talent in the music industry. It was a pleasure to talk to him, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. After 25 years in the music business, both as a major label priority artist and as a jobbing musician, Ed Harcourt still has big ambitions. “My greatest achievement would be to write a song I would never get bored of singing”.Cards on the table, Ed Harcourt's two instrumental albums made between 2018 and 2020 (Beyond the End and Monochrome to Colour) got me through the pandemic. Well, they certainly helped. But Ed didn't sing on either, so it comes as something of a relief to have Ed Harcourt back in the world of songs. Not only that, but his best batch of songs for a while - held together on a cracker of a new album El Magnifico. It is quite possibly the best album he has ever made. The question is, will enough people get to hear it?Harcourt was first signed to Heavenly Records, which was subsumed into the EMI empire of old, where he was a priority UK artist for a while - thrust into the eye of the needle. But the chart positions never came, the pressure mounted, and, inevitably, Harcourt moved on into the second phase of his career as an independent artist. These days, his view of ‘the industry' is understandably jaded. “I went a bit mad. I had been institutionalised. I felt done. It still feels like a rollercoaster, but I can't do anything else”. His solo albums as an independent artist have impressed critics and fans - especially Furnaces (2016) - but commercial success has been elusive, and Furnaces left him burnt out and in need of a change (hence the ‘neo classical phase' that followed).Harcourt remains an active collaborator, however, producing albums for Kathryn Williams and Sophie Ellis Bexter, whom with Ed co-wrote on her last three albums. He is now working with emerging artist Roxanne De Bastion. In many ways, it is surprising he is not more in demand as a producer, although by his own admission, he will never be motivated to do anything within a million miles of what you might call a trend. Meanwhile, he tours with cult Ohio indie band The Afghan Whigs and is waiting for some film score projects to drop. But, for an ambitious artist, is that success?“Success is working. Just making music all the time. I am proud but dismissive. Something will come, but I just don't know what, yet…”Harcourt now makes music with the battle scars of an artist who has been through the mangle. He rode the hype cycle - signing a five album deal to a major, experiencing the fallout from that, and steadily rebuilding to a place where he can always make music for himself.  In particular on El Magnifico, there is a bouncy, upbeat ‘single' in Strange Beauty, while Deathless is a throwback to the classic days of album songs - a centrepiece if you will. Broken Keys is reminiscent of Elvis Costello during his 70s heyday, while Into The Loving Arms Of Your Enemy may well be Harcourt's best song so far. In fact, it might be the song Ed Harcourt never gets bored of singing. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Singer, songwriter, novelist, and painter Kathryn Williams is proud to release her new album ‘Night Drives'. The collection explores a more filmic sound, with a larger ensemble of instrumentation, particular emphasis on the strings and production from Ed Harcourt. It's out via One Little Independent Records.   Journeying from leftfield contemporary pop to soft acoustics, Kathryn Williams uses her latest LP to explore a variety of fresh ideas driven, in part, by a host of collaborators. Kirsty Logan, Oystein Greni, Romeo Stodart, Matt Deighton, Simon Edwards, Yvette Williams, Neill Maccoll, Andy Bruce, Ida Wenoe, Joel Sarakula, Emily Barker and John Alder all have credits on various tracks across ‘Night Drives'. Kathryn explains “I've been releasing music for 24 years now. That fact blows me away, and things have changed so much over those years. The biggest change has been my love of co-writing and writing for other artists. This began when I first went on a writing retreat with Chris Difford forming close friendships and working relationships that are represented here”.   Her first official album since ‘Hypoxia' in 2015, ‘Night Drives' opens with some of Kathryn's most immediately electronic tracks to date, the nihilistic ‘Human', big ballad ‘Answer In The Dark' with all it's bold, layered production, and the dynamic, infectious ‘Radioactive'. Elsewhere on the likes of ‘Moon Karaoke', ‘Magnets' and ‘The Brightest', a more cinematic sound is explored; slowly unravelling stories backed by delicate acoustics and elated, emotive string pieces. ‘Put The Needle On The Record' and joint closers ‘Starry Heavens' and ‘I Am Rich In All That I've Lost' are relaxed and fall into the more traditional world of folk inspired melancholia. Kathryn's inimitable charm colours the whole album with emotion and affection – occasionally brooding, always likable.   Discussing some of the themes explored she says “Some of it is questioning who we are, realising that being human is about flaws, humility, and the consequences of how we react to others. It can be about the longevity of a long-term relationship, how to keep the fire burning and to celebrate that. So many love songs are about the first moments, but this is about enduring love. The simple things that fill a day and how our dreams and wants are so separate to the daily grind. The final track is a philosophical musing on loss and gain in life. How by living a long life we will lose so much, but that in itself is riches”.

Lagoon is a lush and complex record, filled with moments of intense emotional vulnerability and second-to-none pop songwriting. John brought his openness and storytelling ways to this talk as well. Leo Abrahams is an English musician, composer and producer. He attended The Royal Academy of Music before starting his music as the lead guitarist with Imogen Heap. He has collaborated with Brian Eno, Katie Melua, Ed Harcourt, Jarvis Cocker, Chris Difford, Carl Barat, Regina Spektor, John Hopkins and Paul Simon to name a few. He has released five studio albums which are ambient soundscapes with complex arrangements. He has co-written and arranged film soundtracks including Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones and Steve McQueen's Hunger. To be honest, I could name another hundred artists and projects but lets just say he can play piano, guitar, guitarette, bass, hurdy gurdy, omnichord and something called the guitorgan? In this episode, Leo is happy to be tired and frustrated in order to have something to talk about. Stories include his younger self sleeping on a 45 degree angle ramp outside a flat he couldn't get into, and his big affection for hotel beds. Hosted on Acast.

Been a long time coming this episode. I've meant to speak to Kathryn Williams – whose music I've loved since I was a bruised hearted teenager in the North East of England, a region that neither of us were born in, but came to call home – for ages now. Life happened. But with Kath's excellent new, 14th studio album, Night Drives out and about, I thought I needed to make it happen... and fast! Kath is on a writing retreat, so I was grateful to her for making the time to speak to me. She's also on her phone when we connect, so it means the audio is a bit scratchy in places. But hey, if you sat through a lot of the early episodes of The James McMahon Music Podcast, you've heard worse. And I think what follows is an interesting, sometimes very funny conversation - about recording on a budget, singing when no-one is listening, The Flumps, the brilliance of Ed Harcourt, robot Jimi Hendrix and more - with one of Britain's most consistent songwriters… The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook media production. This week, we speak to Leo Abrahams. Leo is a musician, composer and producer. Although classically trained, he left behind a degree in composition at the royal academy to play guitar for Imogen Heap, and later, Ed Harcourt as part of their touring bands. A chance encounter with production legend Brian Eno led to him assisting on a variety of projects, often helping to ‘finish' the myriad of releases Brian would be working across. This led to him taking on more production roles and Leo has since built a fascinating C.V. that includes Frightened Rabbit, Wild Beasts, Katie Melua and Paolo Nutini. From his newly completed studio in east London he now divides his time between film and TV composition, session guitar work, solo albums, and of course, his production work. And it's here we joined him to hear the story of his new studio, his serendipitous meeting with Mr Eno and what it's like touring Siberia with a coach full of free jazz musicians… The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. Escuchar audio

As you know, we're exploring the impact of Covid-19 and other 21st century traumas on UK life - particularly the worlds of business, culture and education - talking to those working at the coalface. A special area of focus, over a number of episodes, is the music industry. Already a sector facing radical adaptation in a digital age, always treading a fine line between a public devoted to live music, festivals and championing their favourite artists and unsustainable business models, the death of record sales and a fragile future for many grassroots music venues. Throw in a global pandemic, and even the most fundamental recording, touring, creating and performing becomes a minefield. We've spoken to Norman Cook about club and festival survival, Meeta Raval about the state of opera and Amy Lamé about London's night-time economy in lockdown - with many more expert voices still to come, who will help to unpick this complex and valuable world. In this podcast episode, our special guest is Fiona Bevan. East Anglian Fiona is both a singer-songwriter of her own folk-inspired music and one of the UK's most prolific pop and rock songwriters for global acts as diverse as Kylie Minogue, Steps, Nick Mulvey, Lewis Capaldi, Aurora, Ed Harcourt and The Backstreet Boys to name just a handful. A contributor to a clutch of top 40 hit singles and albums, and an acclaimed performer of her own work, Fiona is still best known by many for co-writing the song 'Little Things' with Ed Sheeran. The song was released by One Direction in 2012, getting to number one in 13 countries with platinum certified sales in the UK, USA, Australia, Norway, Mexico and Canada, winning a coveted BMI award for the song-writing. Richard spoke to Fiona about the real lows of being a performer when you are banned from performing, the highs of having a dizzyingly upbeat track included on one of the biggest selling albums of 2020 - and what she thinks needs to change as the industry recovers from this unprecedented crisis. --- Useful links: https://fionabevan.co.uk/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiona_Bevan http://www.navigatorrecords.co.uk/artists/fiona-bevan/ https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/kylie-minogue-songwriter-fiona-bevan-paid-only-100-in-streaming-royalties-for-album-work-xbdl0cxcs https://www.songwritingmagazine.co.uk/how-i-wrote/one-direction-little-things-fiona-bevan --- For more information on how you can get involved with The Possibility Club – an inclusive community of professionals working out what's next, have a look here > www.thepossibilityclub.org You can also receive Finding Chances, a free weekly letter from Richard Freeman, looking behind-the-scenes at business, culture, community and education by signing-up at findingchances.substack.com/ We'd love to know what you think of this podcast. Blair has now cemented his place as one of Britain’s most exciting talents to come from the folk scene. The Guardian stated that the ‘House Of Jacks’ proves Blair is ‘an increasingly adventurous songwriter’, Uncut reviewed it as ‘thoughtful and exploratory’, The Independent on Sunday described it as ‘fluent, lamentory and accomplished’ while Q Magazine wrote that House of Jacks is ‘an exciting glimpse of where traditional folk might go’.

We had the opportunity to interview Lissie!"Lissie Maurus was raised in the riverside town of Rock Island, Illinois, and she drew upon those blue-collar Midwestern origins to create her own form of indie folk music. The granddaughter of an international barbershop quartet champion, she grew up singing in theater productions, eventually picking up the guitar and playing her own songs at local coffee shops as a teenager. Lissie was also something of a rebel; she got thrown out of high school during her senior year, spent a brief period at Colorado State University, relocated to Paris for a semester, and eventually ditched college altogether to pursue her music career. Returning to the U.S., Lissie headed west and settled in Los Angeles, where she became a fixture on the local venue circuit and landed a national tour opening for Lenny Kravitz.Lissie's music had already appeared on shows like The O.C., Veronica Mars, and House by the time she moved to California, and she widened her fan base by launching a weekly songwriter's circle at her local bar, Crane's Hollywood Tavern, and releasing a self-titled EP. Things truly began picking up speed in 2009, though, when Lissie released the dusky Why You Runnin' (partly recorded in the U.K.) and toured the country alongside Ray LaMontagne.Although she also made several appearances in America -- including a standout performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and a single date with the rebooted Lilith Fair -- Lissie spent most of her time touring Europe, where her debut record, Catching a Tiger, was released in June. An American release followed in August, courtesy of Fat Possum Records. Featuring production from a handful of artists including Jacquire King, Julian Emery, and Ed Harcourt, Catching a Tiger built upon Lissie's folkie California sound with a commercial appeal that helped land it in the Top Five of the U.S. Billboard Folk Albums chart and number 12 on the U.K. Albums chart. After an extensive period touring, particularly in the U.K., Lissie returned to the studio in 2012 with producer Garrett "Jacknife" Lee -- who had also produced albums for Snow Patrol and Robbie Williams -- to work on a follow-up. In October 2013, Lissie delivered her second full-length album, the glossy, '80s soft rock-influenced Back to Forever. The covers EP Cryin' to You followed a year later. In 2016, Lissie released her third studio effort, the Curt Schneider-produced My Wild West. Recorded in Los Angeles, Ojai, and Nashville, the album had a moody, noir-ish feel. It debuted at 16 in the U.K. and 171 on Billboard and was followed in the autumn by Live at Union Chapel. Lissie relocated to Iowa in 2017 and wrote the album that became Castles, a stripped-back, direct record released in March 2018. She continued to pare things down on 2019's When I’m Alone: The Piano Retrospective, which featured solo piano versions of her old songs." - AllMusic.com; Biography by Andrew LeaheyBringin’ it Backwards: Instagram - Twitter - FacebookLissie: Instagram - Twitter - Facebook - SpotifyCredits:Theme Song: Scott RussoDesign: Oscar RodriguezMentions:Thank you to Heather Hawke and Sonos!Favorite Quote from the episode “Do it for the right reasons and hopefully, you’ll find happiness.” - LissieContributors:Adam Lisicky, Tera Lisicky, LissieEmail: Hello@BringinItBackwards.comListen: https://link.chtbl.com/BiBhttps://www.instagram.com/columbiauk/https://www.instagram.com/fleetwooddmac/https://www.instagram.com/heatherhwk/https://www.instagram.com/jodudderidge/https://www.instagram.com/lennykravitz/https://www.instagram.com/lissiemusic/https://www.instagram.com/mcraftmusic/https://www.instagram.com/mihollywood/https://www.instagram.com/ozomatli/https://www.instagram.com/phillyglovehttps://www.instagram.com/sonos/https://www.instagram.com/thehotelcafe/https://www.instagram.com/umphreysmcgee/https://twitter.com/SCI_fidelityhttps://www.facebook.com/THEOS-JAVA-CLUB-56504854582/Keywords:@lissiemusic #lissie #lissiemusic #ElisabethCorrinMaurus #ElisabethMaurus @mihollywood @thehotelcafe @lennykravitz @mcraftmusic @jodudderidge @columbiauk @ozomatli @phillyglove @umphreysmcgee @sci_fidelity @heatherhwk @sonos @fleetwooddmac #mihollywood #thehotelcafe #lennykravitz #mcraftmusic #jodudderidge #columbiauk #ozomatli #phillyglove #umphreysmcgee #scifidelity #heatherhwk #sonos #danzig #Metallica #judaspriest #iowa #rockisland #ojai #farm #barbershopquarte #theos #theosjavaclub #openmic #fortcollins #colorado #illinois #mississippiriver

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan

Kathryn Williams, singer-songwriter, laughs like the flowers as she talks about Dylan as inspiration and Cat Stevens as her secret crush. Outsiders and identity are themes; she listened to Janis Joplin every morning to get through school. Kath confesses to some ”wild” teenage years: listening for hours to tapes of Dylan in a Liverpool pub car park. Lay Lady Lay was “a wakening into the adult world”, her “massive daily song: saucy and sexy”. Her songwriting is illuminated: “how to make truth ring”. Kathryn Williams has released 14 studio albums. She has written and arranged for a multitude of artists and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize for her second album, Little Black Numbers. She has collaborated with artists including John Martyn, Chris Difford, Thea Gilmore, Ed Harcourt and The Magic Numbers. It´s all over now eftir Bob Dylan er þarna en hún gaf það áður út 1985. Sorrow. Við heyrum líka í þættinum nýja músík frá td. Hozier, Vampire Weekend, Dido, Florence and the Machine, Bryan Adams og Ryan Adams.

In this edition of the Casey Stratton Podcast I talk about the recent TV opportunities I have been offered that may or may not pan out. I also talk a little more about Memories and Photographs before performing Time Will Melt Us Away from that release. I then perform a cover of Cloudbusting by Kate Bush. Music recommendation is Rosie Thomas' If Songs Could Be Held.On her third Sub Pop full-length, this Seattle songwriter/vocalist approaches the sometimes difficult but universal topics of introspection, identity, and love with bravery, honesty, and above all, stunning beauty. "If Songs..." marks the first time she's collaborated with musicians outside her circle of family and friends, this time working with Liz Phair guitarist Dino Meneghin, accomplished film soundtrack string arranger Josh Myers, and a duet with Ed Harcourt on the classic "Let It Be Me". - AmazonBuy Memories and Photographs from caseystratton.comBuy Memories and Photographs on iTunesBuy Rosie Thomas' If Songs Could Be Held on iTunesBuy Rosie Thomas' If Songs Could Be Held on amazonemail me a question at podcasts@caseystratton.comListen to Podcast #35
