Wendy Carlos was born Walter Carlos in Rhode Island in November 1939. She is the first transgender recipient of a Grammy Award, her album SWITCHED-ON BACH won three Grammys in 1970. Later, in 2005 she was the recipient of the SEAMUS Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to the art and craft of electro-acoustic music. Wendy Carlos is best known for her electronic music such as SWITCHED-ON BACH…and film scores such as A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, THE SHINING and TRON. Her studies of music composition at Columbia University in New York City in the 1960s led to her working with electronic musicians and technicians where she helped in the development of the MOOG SYNTHESIZER. This was the first commercially available keyboard instrument from Robert Moog. During her time at Columbia, Carlos ordered components of a custom designed synthesizer from Robert Moog, and she collaborated with Moog on the design of that early instrument, which became known as the MOOG SYNTHESIZER. Some of the modules included a touch-sensitive keyboard, a portamento control, which slides notes in the scale between one note and the next, a filter bank, and a 49-oscillator polyphonic generator bank that could create chords and arpeggios, arpeggios are the individual notes of those chords played in cycles. Today, we take the synthesizer for granted. The keyboard synthesizer has become widely-available, and most keyboard musicians today, including me, use a synth keyboard such as BEHRINGER, KORG, NORD, ROLAND, YAMAHA, and yes… even the brand Carlos herself helped design with Robert Moog, the MOOG synthesizer. After getting her Masters in Music Composition from Columbia University in 1965,

ONE NATION! (Singing)Announcer: Hey! This is Gail Nobles. It's almost midnight. Y'all ever leave the radio on while you're sleeping? The Glitch Sound! Yea this is Gail Nobles up with ya. So tune into the podcast. Today's topic: George Clinton. Singer's speech: Thank you George Clinton. I see where you're coming from. Wake up Nation! It's time to come together and do what's right. There's a mighty hand that has kept us here, and sometimes it seems like it's moving away. Get it into your mind. One Nation.Announcer: Do you remember when George would say (Feet don't fail me now)? The song “One Nation Under A Groove” was referring to dancing as a way to freedom. Today people still want freedom and believe in fighting for it. When I was a little girl, George Clinton's music seemed a little strange to me in the 70's. He knew things I didn't. But looking at the world today, I understand rebellion and what might have inspired George. Still, his reason for writing the song may not have been political. But when I see what's going on in the world today, I hear George better than I ever did before. And also, you have to be careful what you say. I hope you understand. Feet don't fail me now. One Nation Under A Groove is the ninth studio album by American funk and rock band Funkadelic, released on Sept. 22, 1978 on Warner Bros Records. One Nation Under a Groove was Funkadelic's most commercially successful album, reaching number 16 on the Billboard 200 and being certified platinum in the US, and was one of the band's most critically lauded albums. It is also regarded by many as the greatest funk album of all time and ranks at or near the top of many "best album" lists in disparate genres.[10] The album was later featured on Vibe magazine's 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century list. The album is ranked number 177 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in both 2003 and 2012 editions. You know George came back in 1982 with the song Atomic Dog. The track was released as a single in 1982 and became the P-Funk collective's last to reach #1 on the US R&B chart. Atomic Dog is now regarded a classic in black popular music. It was at first held back from radio stations. When I hear the song, to me it's about men chasing women like dogs chase cats. Some men are like dogs. Again, I hear George.I'm Gail Nobles, and you're listening to Postgirl's Recordings. It's a show about the meaning of a song. Today's topic George Clinton. “ I Hear George” by Gail Nobles on the Cat Bear © 2021.

Legendary record producer Ted Templeman is a familiar name to those of us who eagerly read the back of all our favorite albums in the seventies and eighties. Working for Warner Bros Records (now just Warner Records) Templeman was the man behind the sonic goodness of acts like the Doobie Brothers, Montrose, Van Halen, Aerosmith, and more. Author and historian Greg Renoff (Van Halen Rising) knew that this music icon had a million stories to tell, and he set out to preserve them. Through lengthy research and unprecedented access to the man himself, Greg was able to painstakingly assemble a detailed look into Templeman’s life and career. The author joins me for a conversation about how the book took shape, and what he learned from his lengthy interactions with one of music’s most respected producers. Vinyl Vibrations with Brian Frederick podcast

This is the first post of VINYL VIBRATIONS by Brian Frederick. In today's podcast we look at Part ONE of a two-part program on JAZZ FUSION. Today, we focus on the decade of development of JAZZ FUSION during the late 1960s and into the 1970s -- during the "Golden Age of Vinyl" when many of the early works we will hear are found in Vinyl LP format. Jazz Fusion maybe not as much a musical style, but more of a MUSICAL APPROACH. PROGRAM SUMMARY M1 Gary Burton Quartet, their first album DUSTER in 1967 on RCA Records, vibraphonist Gary Burton, the song "LITANY". Gary Burton - the jazz vibraphonist from Anderson Indiana.  Burton plays with Larry Coryell [guitar], Roy Haynes [drums], Steve Swallow [bass].  Burton developed a pianistic style of four-mallet technique as an alternative to the usual two-mallets. He is also known for pioneering fusion jazz.   In 1967 BURTON formed the Gary Burton Quartet.   Predating the jazz-rock fusion craze of the 1970s, the group's first record, Duster, combined jazz, country and rock and roll elements. M2 John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra and the album APOCALYPSE, 1974 on CBS. With the London Symphony Orchestra, with Michael Tilson Thomas conductor. The song titled WINGS OF KARMA track one side 2. This album is produced by George Martin. Recorded in London 1974. McLaughlin is flexing his creative muscles, demonstrating, convincingly, that he can compose and arrange in a symphonic format, and work in his electric instruments, the electric piano, guitar and bass, and the rock drum set with . Jean Luc-Ponty is featured on electric violin. John McLaughlin on electric guitar, Gayle Morgan on keyboards, plus 9 other members of the LSO. Very powerful, a very new musical dimension, this sound, in 1974. M3 The MOTHERS, and the album ..The Grand Wazoo, and the song "EAT THAT QUESTION", on Reprise Records, Warner Bros Records, 1972. Produced by Frank Zappa. On woodwinds Mike Altshul and Joel Peskin, Sal Marquez on all brass, George Duke on Keyboards, Frank Zappa percussion, and Guitar Frank Zappa, Drums Aynsley Dunbar and Bass-the credit shows as "erroneous"! All selections composed and arranged (and produced) by Frank Zappa. M4 Jean-Luc Ponty on electric violin and the album King Kong, the song "IDIOT BASTARD SON" by Frank Zappa, The album cover indicates "music for electric violin and low budget orchestra - composed and arranged by Frank Zappa. The electric violin has a natural footing, a solid role as a solo instrument in this new JAZZ FUSION genre. M5 Jerry Goodman and Jan Hammer  the song "Stepping Tones, composed by Rick Laird on the "Like Children" album, Nemporer Records 1974. This is an interesting album from the standpoint that all of the performance talent on this record is supplied by only two persons --- Jerry Goodman on on violins, electric guitar, electric mandolin, acoustic guitar, viola and --- Jan Hammer on piano, drums, moog bass, moog lead, percussion. M6 The MOTHERS "Peaches en Regalia" live track from  The MOTHERS and the "Fillmore East, June 1971" album, distributed on Reprise (Warner Bros) Records. Zappa is on electric guitar, Ian Underwood on keyboards, Aynsley Dunbar on drums, Jim Pons on bass, Don Preston on the mini-moog, and Bob Harris on 2nd keyboard. "Peaches en Regalia" was written by Frank Zappa and published by Frank Zappa Music.

Guitarist Mick Sweda and engineer Toby Wright join the guys this week to reflect on 1988's Bulletboys album. Produced by the Ted Templeman for Warner Bros Records, the album reached #34 on the Billboard 200 chart. Correspondingly, the band received heavy rotation from MTV. The videos for 'Smooth Up in Ya' and 'For the Love of Money' were ever-present at the time. Bulletboys   Mick shares the story of how he, bassist Lonnie Vencent and vocalist Marq Torien exited King Kobra. With the addition of drummer Jimmy D'Anda, the band started turning heads quickly in Hollywood, including that of Templeman. Between the chops of the members and an essential image, Bulletboys were armed with plenty of ammunition. Working as an engineer in 1988, Toby shares his memories from the production side of things including an instance of him showing Mick and the guys reels from the recently-completed 'And Justice for All' album by Metallica. The production of Bulletboys took place at One on One Studios in Hollywood, CA. In this episode, Mick and Toby discuss some differences of opinion on certain aspects of recording and the lessons learned from that process. Additionally, the guys give their thoughts on working with producer Ted Templeman. Next, we move on to get Mick's memories on the songwriting process with a track-by-track discussion. Bulletboys features ten very strong tracks. In contrast to other bands of the era, there isn't a single ballad on the album. Nonetheless, the album thrives in spite of the expected with songs full of attitude and swagger. Bulletboys 1988   Although lead singer Marq Torien has made certain claims about the songwriting on this album, Mick takes time to share his side of the story. In light of Mick's stories today, it makes for an interesting picture of the making of this album. Ultimately, the past came back around to the present. Mick reformed with Jimmy D'Anda and Lonnie Vencent to form Lies Deceit & Treachery; a new band with a classic sound. Check out more on them HERE. Hollywood born Marc Graue offers great stories of experience and sage advice from both sides of the glass in today's LovethatVoiceover show.   His perspective? Find the slice of VO you are comfortable in versus assuming you need to be a jack of all trades.  He is quite proud of his ‘Hotel Mario' notoriety, winning game of the year 2011 for ‘SkyRim' and being ‘Mr.Zircon' in voice & action figure.    Enjoy these stories: The “celebrity photos”; Charlton Heston in his robe;  Marc getting in trouble in radio, talking his way into Cherokee music studio (Motley Crue, Pat Benatar, Van Halen, etc) and landing the Warner Bros Records account… He then bought “Studio 5” with about 650 sq ft which doubled, tripled and grew to 15,000 sq ft.  He still runs it today in combination with his quite busy VO career! Marc Graue is a professional American Voice actor as well as the owner of Marc Graue Voice Over Recording Studios in Burbank CA.  Marc Graue Voice Over Recording Studios is recognized worldwide as a leader in voiceover recording for all types of VO and more, has won 2 Grammys, a Clio, International Radio Festival Gold Awards, numerous Crystal Communicator Awards, Silver Mikes, and a Telly Award.
