Scott Siracusano’s inventive cinematography on Control Freak

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 309: Scott Siracusano The Hulu original horror film, Control Freak, plunges audiences into the unraveling world of Val (Kelly Marie Tran), a motivational speaker tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head. Is it a manifestation of her own mind, or is she falling prey to a parasitic demon from her homeland? Control Freak is a body horror film that delves deep into themes of control, perfectionism, mental health, and generational trauma. Cinematographer Scott Siracusano has known Control Freak writer and director Shal Ngo since 2019. The two made a short, The Box, which went to the prestigious Cameraimage Film Festival in Poland. Their creative partnership continued on another short film, Control, for season two of Hulu's Bite Size Halloween. When Ngo was invited to expand Control into a feature-length film, Control Freak was conceived. Scott was captivated by the script and eager for the creative challenges it presented. Unfortunately, the film hit several roadblocks and delays before shooting was finally greenlit by the network. As a first-time feature DP, Scott had to meet with producers and pitch himself as the best cinematographer for the film. Championed by Ngo, Scott meticulously prepared a lookbook and presented his scene-by-scene shooting strategy in an hour-long meeting, ultimately securing his role as the film's cinematographer. One of the most significant cinematographic challenges on Control Freak was executing its underwater sequences. Due to a limited budget, there wasn't enough time or money to shoot the actors in real tanks of water. Scott chose to use dry for wet film techniques, where smoke, specialized filters, and dynamic lighting effects are skillfully combined to simulate an underwater environment. Inspiration for this approach came from Dan Laustsen's masterful work in The Shape of Water. “What I realized is that it is truly a less is more situation,” Scott says. “We need to have the caustics of water and moving lights that you would feel on your subject in tandem with atmosphere, and particles that could be added as effects. I was like, 'I think we could pull this off. I think we could actually do this.'” The biggest concern was creating realistic hair and body movement floating in water, so the actors' hair was tied back for these scenes. The production team found a music performance space where they could build a wire rig, enabling the actors to “float.” For close ups, Scott found simply having the actors sit and move around on a yoga ball effectively created a floating effect. Two projectors helped simulate water patterns, and the room was filled with atmospheric haze. Subtle fill light and slight camera movements completed the effect. Ultimately, these practical in-camera effects were so successful that the film required minimal visual effects for its underwater scenes. The lighting and color palette of Control Freak were crucial in establishing a claustrophobic atmosphere and exploring the film's central duality between sanity and madness. "We really wanted to lean into the surrealism and the dreamlike state of everything,” explains Scott. “Moonlight definitely allowed us a little bit more shaping, and being able to hide the monster. I really wanted to have rich, detailed shadows that were never true black—always some detail, no matter how dark the shadows.” Val's house was intentionally kept as an enclosed space, with curtains constantly drawn, immersing the audience in her confinement and heightening their sense of being trapped alongside her. As a horror fan himself, Scott loved creating the look and feel of Control Freak. “It's so cool and fun being on set, in the actual world with the creature there.” His takeaways from lensing his first feature included the importance of faithfully executing the director's vision while remaining adaptable to the unpredictable nature of filmmaking. “Going into a feature,

Major milestones are taking place for Haverhill Public School students with integration of modular classrooms at John Greenleaf Whittier School and steel reaching its peak at the new Dr. Albert B. Consentino School.During an appearance this week on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program, Superintendent Margaret Marotta paid special attention to the $160 million replacement Consentino project and $3 million temporary Whittier additions.“If people take a ride by the Consentino, the steel is up. It's looking like a building. It's pretty exciting, and the modulars are up over at Whittier, so we have a lot going on,” she explained.Marotta says a “beam signing” for the last piece of steel going up at Consentino School is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22. Besides Whittier, on Concord Street, and Consentino, on Washington Street, the construction list also includes indoor tennis and pickleball courts at Haverhill High School. Marotta estimates both of those projects will be completed early next year.Championed by the School Committee last year, the modular units then under consideration were to bring six classrooms and two bathrooms to the school. Last December, the Massachusetts School Building Authority voted to invite the school into an eligibility period that involves a feasibility study and later steps to determine whether the school should be renovated or replaced and the amount of state reimbursement. The modular classrooms could then be used at any other school that would benefit from additional space. The superintendent also expressed pleasure with school sports programs as the season winds down.“Our girls soccer team was the Merrimack Valley Champion. We had three athletes from the volleyball team go all conference and three golfers, and our Cross-Country Coach Mike Maguire was named coach of the year for Merrimack Valley, and I don't think that's the first time for Mike either. He's a pretty darn good coach,” she said.Support the show

Upon its release, Pitchfork dubbed the record “an intensely personal document (that) examines the realities of being a Southern Black LGBTQ+ woman in songs both defiant and vulnerable.” One of those tracks in particular, the Grammy-nominated “Black Myself,” matches a hypnotic groove and gritty distortion with lyrics addressing the horrors of chattel slavery and the Brown Paper Bag Test, making for an unforgettable statement that channels both Odetta and Public Enemy. One of the most fundamental and lovely teachings in the lineage of Buddhist meditation is Metta or Loving-kindness. Championed in the west by teachers like Sharon Salzberg, Metta meditation is a practice that brings our attention to the first of the four Brahma Viharas or "heavenly states." It is a simple, yet profound reminder of our ability at any given time to tap into unconditional friendliness toward ourselves and each other. In this Sit Club gathering, we return to the practice as a part of a series centering loving-kindness as a way of lighting up the sometimes dark path of our lives. -- If you would like to join live, please visit: SIT CLUB If you would like to donate to Davin as an energetic exchange for these offerings, please do so here: DONATE -- Born out of the pandemic, Sit Club began in September of 2020 and continues every Sunday morning at 10am CT. Typically an hour in length, an intimate group of all ages, genders and races, from all over the world gathers on Zoom to sit in guided meditation, contemplate a reading and then share in conversation. Each gathering is centered around a spiritual theme chosen and guided by Davin. Youngs Buddhism is often the framework through which the readings and practices are approached, but no particular religious or philosophical ideology is subscribed to. There are no requirements, special skills or abilities that are necessary to attend. Just an open heart and a desire to connect with a community of seekers.

It's Thursday, February 9th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark International Christian Concern brings relief to Turkish Christians International Christian Concern reports it has staff on the ground in Turkey bringing relief to Christians after Monday's devastating earthquake there. Jeff King, ICC's president, shared yesterday that they are also helping Christians in Turkey rebuild their church buildings after the quake. King said they are trying to do this quickly before the government cracks down on the rebuilding process.  King shared what persecution looks like for churches in the country. KING: “Christians in Turkey live as second-class citizens. There's constant discrimination in jobs in lots of areas. The churches receive constant harassment from the secret police. Then, every once in a while, a priest or a pastor is killed. So, it's a tough situation.” You can give to International Christian Concern's relief effort in Turkey through a special link. It's in our transcript today at TheWorldview.com. 1 Corinthians 12:26 says, “If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.” Turkish and Syrian death toll now at 12,000 The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria Monday has risen to over 12,000 people, reports CBS News. Tens of thousands are injured, and thousands of buildings have collapsed. In the wake of the disaster, one rescue story has gone viral. A newborn baby was found still alive under a collapsed building in Syria on Tuesday. In God's providence, the baby girl survived the earthquake and the freezing temperatures, even though her immediate family did not. Rescuers took the newborn to a local clinic. Doctors say the baby is now stable. In State of Union, Biden championed more baby-billing and perversion Here in the U.S., someone did NOT stand up for the lives of babies on Tuesday. President Joe Biden gave his annual State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress in the House Chamber. (Here is a link to the transcript). Biden touted job creation stats and his administration's response to COVID-19. He accused Republicans of wanting to end Medicare and Social Security, drawing boos from GOP members. Listen. BIDEN: “Some Republicans want Medicare and Social Security to sunset. I'm not saying it's a majority. (Republicans boo) Let me give you. Anybody who doubts it, contact my office.  I'll give you a copy … I'll give you a copy of the proposal.” The president also took the opportunity to promote the murder of unborn babies and sexually perverted lifestyles, as Democrats cheered and gave him standing ovations. Listen. BIDEN: “Congress must restore the right the Supreme Court took away last year and codify Roe v. Wade to protect every woman's constitutional right to choose.” (Applause by Democrats) “The Vice President and I are doing everything we can to protect access to reproductive health care and safeguard patient privacy. But already, more than a dozen states are enforcing extreme abortion bans. Make no mistake about it; if Congress passes a national abortion ban, I will veto it. (Applause by Democrats) “But let's also pass the bipartisan Equality Act to ensure LGBTQ Americans, especially transgender young people, can live with safety and dignity.” Isaiah 1:23 says, “Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not bring justice to the fatherless, and the widow's cause does not come to them.” Biden to Texas: Let pharmacies sell the Abortion Kill Pill Texas is one of those anti-abortion states that drew Biden's criticism in his address. The Lone Star State banned nearly all abortions last year. Now, the state's Attorney General is suing the Biden administration over a rule that requires pharmacies to provide Abortion Kill Pills. Attorney General Ken Paxton said, “Texas and several other states across the country have dutifully passed laws to protect the unborn, and we are not going to back down just because unelected bureaucrats in Washington want to create illegal, extremist federal policies.” Smithsonian Museum told pro-life students to leave A Smithsonian museum has apologized to a group of Catholic students for asking them to leave over their pro-life hats. This comes after the American Center for Law and Justice filed a lawsuit against the museum on behalf of the students last week. The students were in Washington, D.C. to participate in the annual March for Life on January 20th. After the march, they decided to visit the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The ACLJ noted that the students were “accosted several times and told they would be forced to leave unless they removed their pro-life hats . . . It is clear that these Christian students were kicked out of the museum solely because of their pro-life and religious views.” Christian Danes object to scrapping of Great Prayer Day And finally, thousands of people took to the streets in Denmark on Sunday, protesting government plans to scrap a Christian holiday. At least 50,000 people showed up for the country's biggest demonstration in over a decade. At issue is a new bill that would abolish the Great Prayer Day to help raise tax revenue for military spending.  The day falls on the fourth Friday after Easter. King Christian V introduced the holiday in 1686 as a day of prayer and fasting. Historically, church bells would ring, like this one … (audio of Danish church bell) to commerce the holiday on which people would take a break from work and commerce. Tis the season for giving thanks, and we here at the Rules of the Game podcast are immensely grateful for the amazing work done by nonprofits across the country to advocate on behalf of ballot measures during the midterm elections. On this episode, we'll highlight several noteworthy wins. From protecting reproductive rights to expanding education access for Dreamers, it was truly a remarkable year for rallying public support and seizing policy wins at the ballot box. Our attorneys for this episode Leslie Barnes Natalie Ossenfort Tim Mooney   Shownotes   Ballot Measures: A Quick Review of the Rules   Yes, 501(c)(3) public charities CAN support / oppose ballot measures (including ballot initiatives, bond proposals, constitutional amendments, etc.) Public charities can lobby (within their lobbying limits) Advocacy for or against a measure = lobbying The public is a legislator in the ballot measure context Under the insubstantial part test, ballot measure advocacy = lobbying. Using the 501(h) election, ballot measure advocacy = DIRECT lobbying. Public charities should refrain from supporting / opposing candidates that may appear on the same ballot (remain nonpartisan) Different rules for private foundations, which should NOT engage in ballot measure advocacy due to prohibitive excise tax, but can take advantage of lobbying exceptions and use general support grants and specific project grant safe-harbors to support the work of their grantees 501(c)(4)s can engage in nonpartisan as well as partisan ballot measure work, but partisan work should remain a secondary activity of the organization Regardless of what type of tax-exempt org you may work for, also keep in mind state / local law, which may require reporting of ballot measure activities and expenditures   Big Wins!   Arizona Proposition 308 Championed by Mi Familia Vota, Unidos US, Arizona Community Foundation, and more! Grants undocumented Arizona high school graduates the ability to obtain in-state college tuition prices and gets rid of Prop 300, which passed with 71% of vote in 2006 and banned state benefits for undocumented persons   Measure 26-228 in Portland, Oregon Championed by Coalition of Communities of Color (Unite Oregon, Latino Network, Muslim Educational Trust, Imagine Black, NAYA Family Center, Pacific Islander & Asian Family Center, LWV Portland, etc. Expands City Council - Creates four City Council districts with three councilors each and ends City Councilmembers managing day-to-day city services and operations.   Emancipation on the Ballot 5 states (OR, TN, AL, LA, and VT) considered proposed state constitutional amendments asking voters whether to abolish slavery Passed in 4 states. LA voters will try again with a revised ballot measure. NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund explains why slavery is still legal in over a dozen states and permitted under the US constitution Why Slavery is Still Legal in America – And How Voters Can Take Action (naacpldf.org) Congress considering amendment to 13th Amendment Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform worked to pass AL's new constitution that removed slavery as well as multiple racist provisions Nonprofits will continue to play vital role in implementing these laws   Michigan Proposal 3 (aka Reproductive Freedom for All Proposal) Establishes new independent right to reproductive freedom in state constitution and invalidates conflicting state laws Allows state to regulate abortion after fetal viability, but not if abortion is necessary for patient's physical or mental health Supported by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, ACLU of Michigan, Michigan Voices, and others Similar wins in California and Vermont. VT's Proposal 5 won with 72% of the vote! Abortion rights now enshrined in VT constitution. It was supported by groups like ACLU of VT, LWV VT, Alliance for a Better VT and more.     Michigan Proposal 2 (Expanding Voting Access) Championed by ACLU of Michigan, NAACP Michigan State Conference, and League of Women Voters of Michigan Changes voting policies in Michigan, including requiring nine days of early voting, authorizing absentee ballot drop boxes, and allowing voters without photo ID to sign an affidavit verifying their identity.   DC Initiative 82 Championed by DC Committee to Build a Better Restaurant Industry, National Center for Lesbian Rights, DC for Democracy, National Employment Law Project Once again the voters are eliminating the sub-minimum tipped wage, and all servers and bartenders that were under this system will be moved into full minimum wage over the course of the next few years.   Resources Ballot Measures and Public Charities: Yes, You Can Influence that Vote Ballot Measures and Recalls: Basic Rules for 501(c)(3) Public Charities, 501(c)(4)s, and Unions Being a Player: A Guide to IRS Lobbying Regulations for Advocacy Charities Foundations and Ballot Measures Bolder Advocacy's TA hotline: 866-NP-LOBBY Email us at advocacy@afj.org Our website is org

What hit the Republican party on election day was… well, the Republican Party. Blow number one, of course, was from the party's president and cult boss, Donald Trump, who wields his narcissism like a political bludgeon. But then Republicans got an even more damaging gut punch from the party's own Supreme Court majority of six partisan hacks. They chose this election year to assert their personal ideological view that the government should control every woman's birth decisions. Not popular! Then, like a karate chop to the party's own neck, its congressional leaders let loose with a pre-election announcement that, if put in charge, the Grand Old Party would go after people's Social Security and Medicare benefits. But Republicans also got hit with something beyond their control: A bevy of new, unabashedly-progressive Democratic candidate running on real populist issues that matter to workaday people, backed up by legions of energized grassroots activists. Candidates like Summer Lee, who'll be the first Black woman elected to Congress from Pennsylvania. Championed by Working Families Party, Our Revolution, and other little-d democratic groups, she beat back concerted attempts by corporate powers in both major parties that tried to demonize and defeat her, including a last-minute dump of $1 million into her GOP opponent's campaign by the American-Israeli SuperPAC. Another is Lina Hidalgo, the feisty people's advocate who is the top county official in Houston, Texas. She faced down a pack of ultrarich oil magnates, developers, and other corporate interests who put up $9 million in a failed effort to boot her. The Republican Party has put its future on the rutted road of right-wing extremism and corporate sovereignty. Grassroots progressives, however, showed in this election a promising path to democratic rejuvenation: Run aggressive campaigns offering real change from the business-as-usual politics and policies of both parties.
