In this episode, the FAQ is: Using QR Codes. Are they safe? Today's Destination is: Belfast, Northern Ireland Today's Misstep: My leaky water bottle was in the overhead bin on the airplane. Travel Advice: Secondhand stores in Belfast are good deals. FAQ: Using QR Codes. Are they safe? Answer: When you open a QR code, pay attention to the context and the brand because it could contain a virus or even worse. Be careful when accessing websites on your desktop, laptop, tablet, watch, or phone. Preview the destination before you go there. A QR code from a reputable source is more likely to be safe. It is best to proceed cautiously if you find a QR code in an unsolicited email or on a random website. Criminals have placed stickers over legitimate QR codes in public places like bus stops. Today's destination: Belfast, Northern Ireland https://visitbelfast.com/ The best part of Belfast, in Northern Ireland, is outside the city and exploring the countryside if possible. See the Giants Causeway, a national treasure of 40,000 hexagonal basalt stone columns that are 40 feet tall along the coast. These were formed 50-60 million years ago. For perspective, there are 70 million people in the UK and 2 million people in No Ireland. The UK left the Left EU, but there is still a Land border with Ireland. The overall goal is one nation across the island. It's been mostly peaceful since the 198 Belfast Peace Agreement on Good Friday. The forecast usually calls for rain, so bring your gear. I booked a tour that included many of the Game of Thrones locations, and I have never seen the films, so I was not very impressed. However, I'm told that scenic, narrow roads and unusual serpentine beech trees made this series memorable. It's an atmospheric tree tunnel and a little bit spooky; on my tour, with Patrick as a guide, we made many stops for castles, caves from 400 million years ago, Bushmills's Whiskey factory, churches, and pubs. Castle at Carrick Fergis https://discovernorthernireland.com/things-to-do/carrickfergus-castle-p674971 I have relatives from Northern Ireland's Counties Leitrim and Louth, and my grandparents used to vacation along the Antrim coast and Glens National Landscape, a legacy of the Ice Age. I felt a tug of my ancestors here as I walked around a few graveyards in the countryside. I enjoyed Queen's University, the Botanic Gardens, the Ulster Museum, and Saturday Food and Craft Markets in the city. The Troubles Museum at Queen's University was really good. Its full name is the Museum of the Troubles and Peace. It's worth your visit, and it's free. http://museumofthetroubles.org/ You can read about the conflicts between the English and the Irish. I heard about them growing up, as my grandfather was born in Ireland. I can have dual citizenship, which is very common among the locals here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulster_Museum On my next trip to Belfast, I will visit the following: Titanic museum Black Taxi Cab Political Murals Tour The Crown Pub https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/northern-ireland/the-crown-bar/visiting-the-crown-bar Sandy Row: What is it? It's part of the turbulent history of Belfast. https://belfastmedia.com/the-turbulent-19th-century-history-of-belfast-s-sandy-ro Maybe by then, I will have watched Game of Thrones. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/northern-ireland/giants-causeway If you need special accessibility help, you can find wheelchair-accessible tours in the show notes. https://www.getyourguide.com/belfast-l442/wheelchair-accessible-tc239/ What else is there in Belfast? Fairies https://www.wildernessireland.com/blog/irish-folklore-fairies/ Today's Misstep: I had a leaky water bottle in the plane's overhead compartment. Tighten the seal on the water container. Mine leaked. I was on a plane and put the container in the overhead compartment. It leaked through my water container into another passenger's luggage on the flight. Earlier in the week I spoke with Dr Cliff Henry, who is a Nature Engagement Officer with the National Trust. Cliff is based on the North Coast of Northern Ireland, famous for its coastal landscapes from the basalt cliffs. Cliff has experience managing the Giants Causeway and gives us insight into the challenges the site faces through increasing visitor numbers and rising sea levels. We also talk about the wide range of activities happening at the site, such as volunteering and engaging with the local communities. My favourite part of our chat was about how the National Trust is applying and testing sustainable land use measures on their land to work with nature. This seems very relevant with the ongoing algal blooms impacting our waterways and coastlines. Don't forget you can subscribe to our email list and check out other episodes at www.coastalcatchups.com.

Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and back to this Series. This series is about the mythic places all over Ireland. And in this episode, we are chatting about the first two episodes, The Giants Causeway and Blarney. Aron and Sorcha are in the “shoffice” again chatting about the beauty of these places, and the stories that go along with two of Ireland's most iconic and sought-after places. We were a bit giddy in this episode, but bear with us, we think we made some good points! We talk about the difficulty in telling a story that is linked with history and honouring the place, which Sorcha found tricky to contend with for the Blarney episode, contrasted to Aron's story of the Giants Causeway which we have both told numerous times. We love to hear from you, so do let us know what thoughts you've had and as always, thanks for listening. Nick and Dave discuss the defections from the race, and how they might impact upon it, and also touch on the retirement of star hurdler Buveur D'Air plus the latest worrying data on dwindling racecourse attendances. This week we're witnessing the final destructive crescendo that put paid to a powerful, but ill-fated invasion fleet bent on conquering England. Queen Elizabeth I stood firm against the mighty Spanish Armada, and the elemental forces of nature came to her assistance. The Spanish ships sent to invade England were bristling with the latest weapons of war and full of men and treasure. After being attacked by Sir Francis Drake in the channel they were scattered by a powerful storm. Pushed by the weather right around the eastern seaboard of the British Isles, around the tip of Scotland some of the remnants of this once formidable invasion fleet ended up at the Giant's Causeway on the Irish coast. Here, at this this world-famous stage of staggering natural beauty, they were hit by another deadly storm and finally destroyed leaving Elizabeth I and England safe.To help support this podcast and get access to New Videos Every Week sign up to Neil Oliver on Patreon. The series Instagram account is – Neil Oliver Love Letter See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The title doesn't directly refer to anything in the episode this week, but it gives me the chance to share one of my favourite songs. I remember being very taken with the video at the time, and it prompted a pilgrimage years later to the Giants Causeway on the Antrim coast. The place is as breathtaking as you would expect and I was blessed with a beautiful evening to sit back and take in the surroundings. A special song & a special place. Just like yesterday, today's skill will almost certainly help save Christmas as we know it. Aid Bernard the Yorkshire (or possibly Lancashire) elf locate the elusive red-coated fellow upon which Christmas pretty much depends. Apologies up-front for all the days of this skill we've missed and for the long and totally unnecessary explanation of the Giant's Causeway. BTW, in saying Yorkshire *or* Lancashire I've immediately alienated both groups of listeners in one fell swoop.
Sharon Hill (Scientifical Americans) joins Jeb and Blake to talk about the Atlantis episode of In Search Of... Watch original In Search Of episode on YouTube. This is a kind of a disjointed mess of an ISO episode, so our notes are kind of all over the place as well. But here's a bunch of highlights and additional reading from our own prep notes for the show: We'll be covering Easter Island in a terrific upcoming episode, but it has nothing to do with Atlantis. Olmec heads don't weigh anything like what is claimed. The Tiwankau text about "long before the Pyramids" stuff comes from nazi-sympathizer Arthur Posnansky whose "15,000 years ago" dating has been picked up by many alt-archaeology researchers. Thera/Santorini is a beautiful place that suffered a devastating disaster ( 1642–1540 BCE ). When not being called "Atlantis" it spends a lot of time as photographs in Greek restaurants. Antikythera Mechanism is from within 200 - 50 BCE. Plato wrote the Atlantis story more than 100 - 200 years before the device was even made. It has nothing to do with Atlantis. Dr. Maxine Asher is a controversial choice for "subject matter expert." Her views may not have been known by the ISO producers? Weird ramblings about Catholics, Jews, 12 Noahs, Psychic Powers, and academic fraud are just some of her career highlights. The Piri Reis map appears again. It does not show Antarctica. Nor Atlantis. The Edgar Cayce people make an appearance. Their group is called the Association for Research and Enlightenment (ARE). The Bimini "Wall" or "Road" is discussed. It looks manmade but was created by natural processes. Other geological features that look manmade include The Giant's Causeway. We talk a bit about Peter Tompkins and mentioned: The Secret Life of Plants Secrets of the Bermuda Triangle Oldest reference I found saying that Peter Tompkins might have been the voice in that weird call was from this 2003 post by "Gian." This comports closely to words written on The Quester Files site - by Gian Quasar, whom I presume is the same author. (Note: Blake and Jeb are both highly skeptical that Tompkins is the voice.) The Mochica artifacts (and the troubling assertion that their art represents proof of a post-Atlantis diaspora) are presented. There is no evidence that this is true, and Jeb is suspicious that some of those artifacts shown are forgeries. Nimoy Fashion Alert:

Kim and Tamara are back from 10 days in Ireland and giving listeners the 411 on their trip. Tune in to hear about their adventures in Dublin, County Wicklow, Waterford, Kilkenny, Belfast, Derry, and the Coastal Causeway. Plus, Game of Thrones fans will love to hear about some of the filming destinations and experiences in Northern Ireland. ON THE PODCAST 00:30 - Talking with Kim and Tamara about adjusting from jet lag 03:07 - Driving in Ireland 07:10 - Guinness Storehouse tour in Dublin 11:36 - Dublin attractions 19:38 - County Wicklown in Ireland's Ancient East 25:50 - Wexford 28:04 - Waterford 34:50 - Kilkenny 40:40 - Waterford Greenway 47:00 - Game Of Thrones boat trip 58:20 - Belfast 1:10:10 - Causeway Coast 1:16:28 - Giants Causeway 1:19:50 - Derry 1:27:30 - Final Tips TIPS FOR VISITING IRELAND Ideally when visiting Ireland you would self-drive or hire a driver so that you can stop where you want and take your time exploring areas. The roads can be a little challenging and narrow, especially if you aren't used to driving on the left. You could definitely rent a car and drive around to explore more than the area you fly into. But when renting a car for your family you must keep in mind that the bigger the car the harder it will be in some areas to get around. Touring the Guinness Storehouse is a lot more than just seeing the beer being made. There are four restaurants and two bars. They will teach you the correct way to pour a Guinness and there is also a spot where you can get a picture of you on the head of your beer. Dublin is a young city in terms of population and a very walkable city to explore. The Ancient East area of Ireland is not far from Dublin and there is a lot of history in the area. Glendalough is an area with monastic ruins and two lakes that is very popular with visitors. There is a famine ship in Wexford and in Dublin. You really learn a lot by visiting just one of these ships but if you have a chance to tour both, you can see the differences and compare the stories and conditions. Waterford is Ireland's oldest city dating back to the vikings. There is much more to Waterford than the crystal. Though if you visit the Waterford Crystal there is a style that is only made for Ireland, so if you are going to buy a piece of crystal you should get that as it will be unique. Jerpoint park in Kilkenny has some great places to explore. There is an apple orchard that makes different products out of their apples. There is also a glass blowing studio that you can visit. Waterford Greenway is a really pretty biking trail, and if you continue you can explore Mount Congreve Gardens which is a very beautiful garden that has a lot of different walking paths. North of Dublin in the Boyne Valley, you can take a Game of Thrones boat tour with Boyne Boats. Game of Thrones fans should also visit Castle Ward for the Winterfell Experiences. You get to visit the area that is the backdrop for Winterfell in the beginning seasons of the show. You can dress up in the costumes and try out archery and axe throwing and maybe even meet a dire wolf. Downtown Belfast is very safe and walkable, with restaurants and bars. You wouldn't know about the Troubles that tore the city apart unless you visit the Peace Wall or the Catholic or Protestant neighborhoods. In the Titanic Quarter in Belfast, you can visit the Titanic Museum and the Titanic Hotel. Until September 2019, there is also a Game of Thrones touring exhibition in Belfast where you can see costumes and props used in the show. The Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is in a gorgeous area. Keep in mind that they will close the bridge depending on the weather. You also need to stop at the first little booth to get you ticket for the bridge. They will not sell them at the entrance to the bridge. Giant’s Causeway is another beautiful site. Give yourself plenty of time to walk along the coast and there is even a path to walk up towards the cliffs and see another view of the coast. Derry is a walled city that has two sides that has a bridge that crosses to both sides called the Peace Bridge. There is some really great food all throughout the city. Make sure you leave extra time for the security in the airport when traveling through Dublin. There will be two seperate security areas that you will have to go through to get back to the US. Make sure to pack and wear layers throughout your trip. With the temperatures changing through the day you will want to shed or put layers back on. On the coast of Northern Ireland lies a remarkable feature: a field of more than 40,000 interlocking hexagonal columns, leading down into the sea. To the ancient Irish, the basalt columns -- the result of a long ago volcanic eruption -- seemed like the foundations of a bridge made for giants. And so they are still called the Giant's Causeway to this day. On this abnormally long episode, we discuss the mythological origins of the causeway and the legendary Irish hero, Fionn Mac Cumhaill, a.k.a. Finn McCool. While the physical bridge to Scotland might be a myth, other connections in the early medieval period were very much evident. Dr. Lucy Barnhouse (@singingscholar), medieval historian and contributor to @historyfootnote, drops wisdom about Irish monasticism and its impact in Ireland and abroad. We discuss the beer-multiplying, chariot-riding St. Brigid, the hot-tempered St Columba, and the wandering St. Columbanus. In addition, listeners Jenn and Diarmuid talk about their experiences visiting the causeway and reflections on the North. We also discuss Game of Thrones locations, surfing off the Antrim Coast, and the joy of grabbing a pint in an Irish pub. There's Irish butter and soda bread and more Houses of the Holy references than are necessary. (That 1973 Led Zeppelin album features the Giant's Causeway on the cover). It's the morning after the night before and Lesley, fortified by at least six coffees and lashings of chocolate, unleashes herself on the election results. That "bloody difficult woman"; the SNP campaign; the Tory deal with their " friends" the DUP; the Corbyn effect ; the significance of the votes in Scotland for indyref2 are all subjected to our , hopefully informed, if slightly manic, analysis. On the way we also manage to cover the Giant's Causeway museum, the perils of postal voting, and banning Ouija boards.Trust me, if you listen, it all makes sense. Lesley also pays tribute to Angus Robertson and ,in particular,Alex Salmond as they both leave Westminster.

Barry has won several ultra-distance (70-200 km) running races, The Mourne Mountain Way, The Abbots Way, The Giants Causeway, The Wicklow Way, The Kerry Way, all without eating anything for breakfast. How? In a word, fat-adaptation. In this interview, Barry describes his work with the pros and six much overlooked factors for high-performance ultra-endurance training: sunlight, cold thermogenesis, DHA from seafood, grounding, and water quality. In county Antrim on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland is the giants causeway. What one Radio Times poll named the fourth greatest wonder of the United Kingdom. 40,000 interlocking basalt columns line the coast, the result of a volcanic eruption millions of years ago. Now it's one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland. Find the complete Giant's Causeway shownotes here. The wind was pretty fierce as bus drove us the 1/2 mile from the visitors center to the Giants Causeway. We were excited. At first glance after exiting the bus, it was beautiful but disappointing. There were a bunch of people milling about on the rocks in a very small area. A big sign and guard halted people from climbing up further on this national wonder. Then I found a passage through the rocks that was overlooked by many of the visitors. On the other side, like crossing through the thin veil, we saw the true majesty of these rocks. Plus a long path along the coast where you could get a better view. When we got back to the visitors center, One of my Invaders told me about the singing rocks they found. That was all cool but what got me excited most about this trip was the legend behind it--Finn MacCool. Finn MacCool was a giant living on the north coast of Ireland. On a clear day you can see the island Staffa in Scotland. There lived a Scottish giant named Benandonner. They taunted one another from afar until finally Finn MacCool tossed long pillars of stone into the water all the way to Scotland, creating a long causeway between the countries. When Finn arrived, he was surprised to find that Benandonner was a lot bigger than Finn. He fled back home and told his wife Oonagh, who came up with a plan. She told Finn to dress like a baby and climb in a crib. When Benandonner knocked on their door Oonagh told him that Finn was out hunting. When Benandonner saw the size of the baby that belonged to Finn and compared it to the human sized Oonagh, he realized Finn must be even bigger than he. So he fled Ireland destroying the Causeway between the two countries. --- If you enjoy this episode, then please post a review on iTunes or your favorite podcatcher.
