On this episode I talk with composer Randall Standridge about his career as a teacher turned full time composer. We also cover topics on mental health, his great relationship with his husband Steve and family, fitness, broadway, marching band...literally all the things. This conversation has so many meaningful takeaways. To find out more about Randall, visit his website liked below. I also included links to the three pieces he detailed in the episode for reference. Keep doing the thing and the stuff and thank you for listening! Quotes: "When people ask me who my heroes are, I always say my parents. They told me I could be anything, do anything, and I believed them." "I had an impulse to create from an early age." "I realized that I was working away my life. We only get one life. So, I needed to choose to leave teaching to pursue my composition career completely." "I was grateful for the work because it was a distraction. There is no way that we can mentally prepare for what we went through the past year. There is no point in sitting around wishing things were different. I didn’t just sit down and grieve myself to waste. I can work on my music and throw myself into that." "What can this piece live without? Does this serve a purpose?" "I decided to make sure that the piece was a commentary on what was happening and not a representation." "The piece is meant to showcase the struggle to hold things together in the face of mental health issues. I am hoping that this piece will be a conversation that helps bring light to mental health." "I am a firm believer that if an opportunity doesn’t exist…create it." "A good relationship is not a great conversation that never ends." "Everyone is the hero of their own story." Welcome to 10Kforte and this great conversation with musician Adrienne Baker! We discuss music, inspiration, diversity and inclusion, and much more! Follow her on Instagram: @flutepursuit Go to her website: www.theflutepursuit.com Some great quotes from the episode include: “If I get through this I am going to stop giving it half steam…I am going to be fearless about this and not care about rejection or what people think.” "What should happen is that we treat everybody with respect. No matter how old they are, their beliefs, their background, we treat them with respect." "When you uplift the lowest among you, you uplift all of you." "This Is not a set it and forget it conversation when we talk about diversity and inclusion." The following bio is from Adrienne's website https://www.theflutepursuit.com Adrienne's background in music started as a toddler crawling around her mother's feet as she practiced Beethoven. Though active in her church as a pianist and singer, where her mother was Ministress of Music, she eventually discovered her love for the flute. Her musical journey on the instrument has taken her across the United States and to Europe. She currently champions music influenced by artists of color and works to expose audiences to these lesser-known composers. A socially conscious artist, Adrienne strives to use her voice to help others find theirs. Through her collaborative duo with saxophonist Seychelle Dunn-Corbin, NorthStar Duo, they work to promote and expose audiences to works for winds. Their first commission was Spirituals for Wind Duo, an arrangement of negro spirituals by composer Anthony Green. Their most recent commission includes a premiere in Boston of Elizabeth Gilenas’ Green Skies. Adrienne looks forward to continuing to explore their unorthodox instrumentation. Their current passions involve commissioning new works and championing pre-existing works by composers of color and women. A dedicated educator, Adrienne teaches privately - flute and piano - to students of diverse musical backgrounds and ages. There is no greater joy to her than to simultaneously foster a life long love of learning and appreciation for music. In addition to holding Suzuki Certification in Flute, she is a Teaching Artist in the RAMP Program through the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. While matriculating at Rutgers University to pursue a Doctorate in Musical Arts, Adrienne also composes and arranges. He first composition, Opal’s Boogie, was inspired by her friendship with her colleague’s family and their pugnacious and lovable pug, Opal. Adrienne will graduate in 2022. "Art is what remains of our dreams, fulfilled or unfulfilled, when we wake. My purpose is to serve as its outlet." You can follow me on Instagram: @larunningmusic ~DoTheThingAndTheStuff! When I was going through that trying time, my composition 'Gavorkna Fanfare' didn't jump out of the woodwork. It didn't console me. It was the people. 4. As a teacher, you create a safe haven for your students. 5. I might as well have had a jack hammer in my hand rather than a baton! 6.
