Most aspiring composers have narrow goals, seeing film (or video game) music or being a concert composer as the way to go, but if you can create music on paper, you actually have many options to contribute original music and add at least some income in the process. One of those ways is composing for publication that is marketed to schools and churches: music for school bands and orchestras, music for church choirs and handbells ensembles, and more. It's a tricky world that requires a flexible but creative composer who can still write very good music that is specifically tailored to various ages and levels. Bruce Tippette is a composer with dozens of published works through Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, C. Alan Publications, Carl Fischer, FJH, and more, many of which have been honored as J.W. Pepper's Editors Choice. Bruce talks with us about the skills needed to become this type of composer, how to navigate the sometimes intimidating grading system of school ensembles, strategies to getting published, and how all of this can lead to building relationships and getting commissioned work. You can explore Bruce's music and contact him through his website at https://www.brucewtippette.com/ If you have a question or feedback after listening to this episode you can leave a voice message at https://www.speakpipe.com/MusicianToolkit or you can send me a written message at https://www.davidlanemusic.com/contact You can find this episode and links to this show on all podcast apps from https://musiciantoolkit.podbean.com/ . Follow us on Twitter Follow us on Instagram Follow us on YouTube ------------------------------ The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all time[1] and were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. As their popularity grew into the intense fan frenzy dubbed "Beatlemania", the band acquired the nickname "the Fab Four", with Epstein, Martin and other members of the band's entourage sometimes given the informal title of "fifth Beatle". By early 1964, the Beatles were international stars and had achieved unprecedented levels of critical and commercial success. They became a leading force in Britain's cultural resurgence, ushering in the British Invasion of the United States pop market, and soon made their film debut with A Hard Day's Night (1964). A growing desire to refine their studio efforts, coupled with the untenable nature of their concert tours, led to the band's retirement from live performances in 1966. At this time, they produced records of greater sophistication, including the albums Rubber Soul (1965), Revolver (1966) and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), and enjoyed further commercial success with The Beatles (also known as "the White Album", 1968) and Abbey Road (1969). Heralding the album era, their success elevated the album to the dominant form of record consumption over singles; they also inspired a greater public interest in psychedelic drugs and Eastern spirituality, and furthered advancements in electronic music, album art and music videos. In 1968, they founded Apple Corps, a multi-armed multimedia corporation that continues to oversee projects related to the band's legacy. After the group's break-up in 1970, all principal members enjoyed success as solo artists and some partial reunions have occurred. Lennon was murdered in 1980 and Harrison died of lung cancer in 2001. McCartney and Starr remain musically active. The Beatles are the best-selling music act of all time, with estimated sales of 600 million units worldwide.[4][5] They hold the record for most number-one albums on the UK Albums Chart (15), most number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (20), and most singles sold in the UK (21.9 million). The band received many accolades, including seven Grammy Awards, four Brit Awards, an Academy Award (for Best Original Song Score for the 1970 documentary film Let It Be) and fifteen Ivor Novello Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and each principal member was inducted individually between 1994 and 2015. In 2004 and 2011, the group topped Rolling Stone's lists of the greatest artists in history. Time magazine named them among the 20th century's 100 most important people.

Effortless mastery: liberating the master musician within. Alfred Music.
In part 2 of 3, Leila and Dennis talk about his unexpected journey into composition as well as his transition from Alfred Music to Hal Leonard. For more info, visit leilaviss.com/keyideas.
An Impressionist Painter, An Inspired Madman, A Restless Innovator, A True Legend of Jazz Drums, A Master of Drumming Insanity, and a Genius of the Sticks. These are some of the words that describe Grammy Award-winning drummer Paul Wertico. Hailed in the press as “One of the most versatile and musical drummers in music today,” Paul Wertico was a member of the Pat Metheny Group from 1983 to 2001. During that time, he won seven Grammy Awards (three for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, three for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance, and one for Best Rock Instrumental Performance), won numerous magazine polls, received several gold records, and played drums & percussion on David Bowie's hit recording (with the Pat Metheny Group), “This Is Not America.” He has played with countless artists and has performed in all 50 states and over 60 countries. Paul has also played drums and percussion on hundreds of recordings, including Paul Winter's Grammy-nominated release, Earth: Voices of a Planet, and four vocalist Kurt Elling's Grammy-nominated releases. He also hosted his own weekly radio show, Paul Wertico's Wild World of Jazz, from 2010 to 2012. Paul is also extremely active in the field of education. In addition to teaching drums privately for over 45 years, Paul is an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at Roosevelt University's Chicago College of Performing Arts. Before becoming a full-time faculty member at CCPA, he served on the wind & percussion faculty of Northwestern University for 16 years. For over four decades, he's conducted drum masterclasses, clinics, and workshops worldwide and has written educational articles for numerous magazines. He also serves on the Advisory Board and the Pro-Panel of Modern Drummer magazine, the Education Committee of the Jazz Institute of Chicago. In addition, he served five terms on the Board of Governors of The Recording Academy Chicago Chapter. In 2004, Paul was a Chicago Tribune“Chicagoan of the Year.” In 2010, the Cape Breton International Drum Festival honored him with a “Life Time Achievement Award” for his “Major Contribution To The World Of Drumming & Education.” That year, he was also a recipient of the Montréal Drum Fest's “Lifetime Achievement Award.” In addition, as Musical Director for the crowdsourced TV video series Inventing The Future, Paul was nominated for a 2012-2013 Emmy Award in the “Outstanding Achievement In Interactivity” category by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Midwest Chapter. He's also the inventor of his signature product, TUBZ, made by Promark, who also makes the “Paul Wertico Signature Drum Stick.” Paul's recordings have all received great critical praise as a solo recording artist, and DownBeatmagazine listed Paul's CD, Impressions of a City, as one of its “Best CDs of 2010.” In addition, his DVD, Paul Wertico's Drum Philosophy, was named “One of the best drum videos of the last 25 years” by Modern Drummer magazine. LA Weekly even wrote, “His recent records, such as the 2000s Don't Be Scared Anymore and the new StereoNucleosis, are stunning examples of the electronic, rhythmic and intellectual directions jazz could be going." Some of his latest releases include a DVD & CD by David Cain & Paul Wertico entitled Feast For The Senses; a CD by Paul Wertico & Frank Catalano entitled Topics of Conversation; a CD by Fabrizio Mocata, Gianmarco Scaglia & Paul Wertico entitled Free The Opera!; a DVD & CD by Wertico Cain & Gray entitled Sound Portraits (which won “Best Live Performance Album” in the 13th Annual Independent Music Awards (2014); Wertico Cain & Gray's second CD entitled Out In SPACE; Wertico Cain & Gray's second DVD & third CD entitled Organic Architecture;Wertico Cain & Gray'sfourth CD & downloadable video release entitled Realization (which was nominated for “Best Live Performance Album” and “Best Long Form Video” in the 15th Annual Independent Music Awards (2016); Wertico Cain & Gray'sfifth CD entitled Short Cuts - 40 Improvisations; Wertico Cain & Gray'ssixth CD entitled AfterLive; Wertico Cain & Gray'sseventh CD & downloadable video release entitled Without Compromise; a CD entitled Dynamics in Meditationby the Gianmarco Scaglia & Paul Wertico Quartet; and a 2-CD set entitled Live Under Italian Skiesby the Paul Wertico/John Helliwell Project. In addition, the Paul Wertico Trio also released a new CD (celebrating the trio's 25thanniversary) entitled the First Date. In the international press, Paul's drumming has also been compared to that of an “Impressionist painter.” He has also been called “an inspired madman,” “a restless innovator,” “a true legend of jazz drums,” “a master of drumming insanity,” “a genius of the sticks,” and a recent review stated, “Wertico simply oozes musicality.” Last but not least, Paul's groundbreaking drum instructional book TURN THE BEAT AROUND(A Drummer's Guide to Playing “Backbeats” on 1 & 3) was published by Alfred Music in 2017. On this episode I talk with composer Randall Standridge about his career as a teacher turned full time composer. We also cover topics on mental health, his great relationship with his husband Steve and family, fitness, broadway, marching band...literally all the things. This conversation has so many meaningful takeaways. To find out more about Randall, visit his website liked below. I also included links to the three pieces he detailed in the episode for reference. Keep doing the thing and the stuff and thank you for listening! Quotes: "When people ask me who my heroes are, I always say my parents. They told me I could be anything, do anything, and I believed them." "I had an impulse to create from an early age." "I realized that I was working away my life. We only get one life. So, I needed to choose to leave teaching to pursue my composition career completely." "I was grateful for the work because it was a distraction. There is no way that we can mentally prepare for what we went through the past year. There is no point in sitting around wishing things were different. I didn’t just sit down and grieve myself to waste. I can work on my music and throw myself into that." "What can this piece live without? Does this serve a purpose?" "I decided to make sure that the piece was a commentary on what was happening and not a representation." "The piece is meant to showcase the struggle to hold things together in the face of mental health issues. I am hoping that this piece will be a conversation that helps bring light to mental health." "I am a firm believer that if an opportunity doesn’t exist…create it." "A good relationship is not a great conversation that never ends." "Everyone is the hero of their own story." March 5, 2021, I'm very happy that one of my longtime inspirations in the field of percussion agreed to chat, Mr. Anthony J. Cirone. Anyone who has ever studied percussion has said the name, 'Cirone!', countless times, due to his groundbreaking snare drum solo book, Portraits in Rhythm. The book is used at every high school, college, and percussion studio in the world as a barometer of a student's reading ability and musicality on the snare drum. I've been using this book since the mid-1980s and still find new challenges in it today! Anthony J. Cirone received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from The JuilliardSchool. In 1965, he obtained positions with the San Francisco Symphony as a percussionist and at San José State University as Professor of Music. He also served as a lecturer at Stanford University from 1983 to 1992. In 2001, Mr. Cirone became Professor of Music and Chair of the Jacobs School of Music Percussion Department at Indiana University, a post he held for six years until his retirement in 2007. Mr. Cirone has over 120 published titles, including three symphonies for percussion, four sonatas, a string quartet, orchestral works, and textbooks. His book Portraits in Rhythm for Snare Drum is used worldwide for training percussionists and his publication The Great American Symphony Orchestra - A Behind-the-Scenes Look at its Artistry, Passion and Heartache has received high acclaim. Another of his books, The Evolving Legacy of Portraits in Rhythm celebrates the original book's 50th anniversary. In 1999, Mr. Cirone received a Special Distinction Award from ASCAP for his Pentadic Striations for Orchestra, and in 2011, he received a Paul Revere Award for Graphic Excellence in Book Design and Educational Folio. He is Executive Percussion Editor for Meredith Music Publications; a published author for Alfred Music; and a clinician for Zildjian, Yamaha Corporation of America, and Remo Inc. Mr. Cirone is a member of the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame.

“Everybody says, “Yeah, you gotta practice your rudiments.” Normally I am always putting a question mark behind that sentence.” German drummer Jost Nickel is affiliated with a golden generation of German drummers including Anika Nilles, Marco Minnemann, and Benny Greb. In fact, he is Anika’s teacher and even provided Benny Greb with some private lessons. This past year in 2019 was a really big year for Jost with the introduction of his new X 9 signature snare from Sonor and his brand new ‘Snare Book’ that was recently published through Alfred Music. Jost has performed with many great artists including Randy Brecker, Jeff Lorber, Bob Mintzer, Jimmy Haslip, Barry Finnerty, Mitch Forman, Brandon Fields to name but a few but he is maybe even more well recognized in the drumming community as a premier educator. With three books now to his name (The Groove Book, The Fill Book and The Snare Book) and his nomination as “Best Clinician” by Modern Drummer Magazine in 2016 and being featured on MusicRadar’s list of “the 10 best drum clinicians in the world” in 2016 & 2017, it is no question that Jost is one of the finest educators in the world. To add to his list of credentials in education, he is also a tutor at the prestigious University of Pop in Mannheim, Germany. Jost endorses Sonor Drums, Meinl Cymbals & Percussion, Vic Firth, Remo, Ahead Armor Cases and Beyerdynamic Microphones You Will Hear About…. Our thoughts about electric drums vs acoustic drums. His new X 9 signature snare drum with Sonor. The process of creating the X 9 drum video with Sonor. Jost’s game changing moment. Jost’s opinion on rudiments and if we need them. Perfection and how it doesn’t exist. How Jost prepares for clinics. Details for what Jost is doing in 2020 including his new record. Why Should You Listen? Jost is someone who when speaking, should be listened to. Jost’s thoughts on perfection, whether rudiments are really the answer to playing music on the drums, taking chances and removing yourself from a comfortable place in life to start something new, is all amazing insight. To have an hour to listen to our chat, in person, about all of this and more will hopefully provide listeners with some invaluable knowledge right here in this podcast. Today we have the honour of talking with one of the top authors of piano books over the last nearly 35 years: Dennis Alexander. With over 400 publications and recordings on Alfred Music, including Alfred’s flagship piano method Premier Piano Course, Dennis is one of the world’s most prolific and popular composers of educational piano music for students at all levels. In 2015 he was awarded a “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy in recognition of his extraordinary service to the music teaching profession. Mr. Alexander provides a rich learning experience for his students by bringing awareness to the importance of musicality. Often dull topics like music theory and reading notation are brought to life with a creativity and a consciousness of musical expression. In this conversation we talk about: • How Dennis’ background in playing by ear and improvising feeds into how he approaches composing. • The main difference between children and adult learners and one great way to make learning more enjoyable and improvisation less intimidating if you’re an adult learner. • And the specific aspects which you should have in mind to bring a rendition from a strictly-correct but unmoving one through to a compelling, musical performance. Enjoy this glimpse into what makes one of the top piano methods much more than just “playing the right notes at the right time”. Even if you’re not a piano player you don’t want to miss all of the deep musical insight in this interview! Subscribe For Future Episodes!
